In this video we show how a Hobie pedal kayak like the Compass Duo, Tandem Pedal Kayak, can be fitted with a motor. Both of these mounts can work with many other brands of kayaks, but we are just using a Hobie for demonstration purposes. Several kayaks have powerpole stern mounts and other companies have made fin drive pedal kayaks like Hobie. Therefore these same Bixpy mount options can work on not just Hobie kayaks, but rather many other brands as well. The motor used is the very popular lightweight Bixpy Jet drive. The Bixpy Jet motor is a modular motor that can be attached to a wide array of available mounts so you can use it on nearly any kayak, SUP, or even take it scuba diving via handheld attachment. We have several videos on Bixpy and have owned one for years. Bixpy has 10hrs of runtime per battery charge & reaches speeds up to 6.5/7mph depending on what craft you mount it to. Most Hobie kayaks can consistently achieve 4-5.5mph based on their hull designs. That is way faster than you can consistently pedal. Below are some other Bixpy motor videos. The Bixpy motor, in mirage drive mode, protrudes WAY down into the water. Unnecessarily so. Can the tube be cut back by 6 or 8 inches so that it is less likely to hit underwater obstacles?
Yes. It can easily be shortened. They had to make it that length in order to fit the most models of mirage drive kayaks. If you shorten it for your mirage drive kayak it might not fit other models as easily.

Which did you feel was faster? On the back or in the drive well?
Similar speed. Steering was more responsive on stern mount though. Drive well steering was great, but stern mount was better.
Have you worked out the run times for the battery on each or certain speeds
In lowest speed settings despite changes of water conditions I can run around 7hrs+ on a typical 12ft kayak. Some have reported closer to 10hrs.

It would probably be 6-7mph... now a redesigned motor that can do higher rpm or a different propeller, that would make it go faster. 3 Motors would make it go 7mph into 20mph wind though.
How does the Bixpy compare against the mirage drive is it any faster?
Bixpy is faster than you will likely be able to pedal. At the very least it equates to pedaling your hardest. That is my opinion based on owning several Hobies and the Bixpy.
@@KayakDIY I guess the only issue is bixpy runs out of battery on full speed quick, Ive owned Hobies in the past I currently have a viking reload Im either gonna add a bixpy to the viking or get a Compass.

What lb thrust is that Bixpy liken to?
Last I heard I believe they rate it close to a 30lb thrust. Although it feels more powerful to me than my Minn Kota C2 Endura 30. Way more efficient and lightweight too. I believe it has to do with the focused cone/jet design.

Im not moving. My family is staying in the same waterfront home we bought 5yrs ago. My in-laws are moving though and I have been helping them. I love my home. I never want to move. My home isn’t big, but it is in a great water front location for access to ocean/gulf.
Extending down that deep when it's center mounted defeats the only advantage of utilizing such a tiny prop.
The depth/shaft length is the minimum it can be and yet fit all the pedal kayak drive openings. Anyone even remotely handy could shorten it more if they wanted. It just had to be that length to fit multiple fin drive style kayaks like Hobie, Pelican, Lightning Kayak, Vibe, etc. I love the performance and ease of use with the centered mount. It is actually my favorite kayak mount setup. I store mine in my Lightning kayak front hatch and take it out when I want to use it. Also by using small prop it is easier to shroud it to create a jet effect which creates more efficient forward thrust.
