My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!
Need to add a pivot point on the shaft next to the bottom of the kayak. So if you randomly hit the bottom or kelp it will pop up without destroying the motor/ jet drive.
In the US, using this in some states may require the craft to be registered since it is no longer manual propulsion. So check to make sure because DNR fines can be high.
Great Video I don't board or kayak I sail a small sailing cruiser 23ft but my only would not be hitting bottom with motor as you would know to avoid real shallows but hitting an unexpected obstruction on the bottom like bit of old jetty or sea defence and it damaging either motor or the kayak mount but it does look great fun and would be ideal for small tender where you don't want to or can't use petrol..
protip,. , you need to put the dielectric grease on the O rings and threads of the sockets too in high moisture applications to ensure a 100% hydrostatic junction over time,. plastic loves to get seized and brittle especially when sun and salt is involved ,, takit from a guy who works on plow trucks in a northern beach town ,. you may not use a tool to put it together,. but you'll likely need one to separate it if it sits long enough,. and there's no telling if you made it tight enough by hand without greasing the threads too.. it makes hand tight mean a completely different thing
In CA if you attach a motor to your boat, you're required to register it with the DMV, affix a name/registration number to parts of the hull, and add running lights.

DONALD 2020 Main thing for “you” is getting into the shallows. Not everyone hangs in the shallows. Most of my friends use kayak to run offshore. I’m usually going out in deep water. Heck I’m even using my kayaks for scuba diving now. People can easily shorten the mount shaft if they want it running skinny. People shorten trolling motor shafts all the time and this would be even easier. I just have never found the need. However, I plan to discuss short shaft options with Bixpy since some viewers have requested it.
@@KayakDIY yeah I don’t know why they made the shaft so long, the longer the shaft the more strain it is under, plus the obvious of not being able to use in shallow water.

Yeah, seagrass is always a problem with these small motors.. tangles suck always carry your regular fin just in case you get an area where there is a lot of it flooded around because if you don't you're kind of screwed especially on a paddleboard
When they come up with a short-shaft model, I'll likely get one. The major purpose of a kayak is getting into skinny water. One encounter with a submerged log with this long shaft mounted on a 300+ lb Hobie PA14 at 2-4 mph will have you $$$tranded. Also, all the batteries that you see for these applications are rated in Ah. Bixpy rates their battery as 378 Wh. The conversion is 31.5 Ah. Why not advertise in a language their customers a familiar with? Love the concept. But I'll save my $1200 for a shorter version. Would REALLY love to see one with spot-lock.
My thoughts exactly- I fitted a water snake motor to my hobie with a drastically shortened shaft - worked a treat and still able to go through shallow water- this one is far to long and restricts the hobie
Wonder if a person could(with great diy skills and proper tools) cut that motor shaft off about 6”-8” where motor extends only about 1”-2” below the bottom of the kayak hull. That just sticks down way too far, seems like you would hv less torque on the shaft and actually add a little more speed to the kayak. That is my only draw back keeping me from buying one of those Bixby motors for the Hobie. I hv a great shop abs tools and excellent knowledge of wiring and different projects I’ve done, would really like to see that shaft a little closer, but do not know anyone that has bought one for their yak yet. Think they are waiting on me to take the plunge lol Great video, “paddle on” or should I say “switch on”
Please do a video on your friends Hobie PA14. I personally am interested in the mods he did to it. I'm really thinking about getting that same type of setup.
The Hobie fish finder install video I did is also on his kayak. However, I will keep that in mind and maybe do a bow to stern walkthrough of his kayak. I will likely be doing a video on his trailer setup too in near future. He also enjoys diving and spearfishing so hoping he can show me that.
I don't know how I stumbled on your video but I recognize that waterway. Very cool. I've tried starting a youtube channel reviewing local boat ramps but I don't know. Haven't put much effort into it. I'm more of a pleasure boater but I'd like to start a fishing channel. Only problem is I don't know a damn thing about fishing. LOL
Albert Villacampa Takes many hours of research online and even more actually trying to fish. I’ve been fishing for 3 years and it really only picked up for me this year. I still don’t feel like I know enough to start a channel. I jus keep teaching myself different ways to fish.
Wow that pro angler really was moving! That little motor has some serious power. Wonder what thrust it is equivalent to? 6.21mph on a Hobie PA is impressive! I like how you overlayed the speed. Is that something via gopro?
In looking at the supplied link to the bixby Website it says the following low speed 1.3 MPH for 10 hours medium speed 2.5 MPH for 4.5 hours High Speed 4.5 MPH for 1.15 hours
I told Bixpy about my Hobie Pro Angler 14 speed results and they too were surprised, but we had two GPS speedometers running. One on fish finder and other via phone which has proven reliable. I filmed it with KPH as unit of measure because it is more accurate than MPH when using the phone app. So the Hobie PA14 with Bixpy I believe is definitely capable of higher speeds than advertised. As for runtime I get 5hrs running mixed speeds 1-5. The battery typically covers me for a day of kayak fishing. I don’t run speed 10 all the time.
I have a P14 mirage drive and looking to buy this set up. I followed the link but I still don’t see the other parts in ur video could u please send me a link for what I need for the P14 thank you
*You will need the Bixpy Outboard kit and this Hobie Thru-hull adapter:* lddy.no/14y09 This motor and adapter kit will then fit Hobie & multiple brands of kayaks that use the fin style pedal drives. 😎👍
*Why Must The Shaft Length On The Bixpy Mirage Mount Be That Long?* Some viewers think the mount should be shorter and draft less. The motor drops into the Hobie well at a slight angle. If it were any shorter then the mount wouldn't be universal for "ALL" Hobie pedal kayaks. If the shaft were shorter the top gray plug portion of the mount would hit on some Hobies and prevent the motor from fitting into the drive well. Even when i built homemade motors for Hobies I ran into this same dilemma. So the shaft length must remain the same length in order to reliably fit ALL Hobie kayaks. Hopefully this makes sense.
Dude! Are you sure the excess grease has somewhere to go in that connector? Weather pack connectors like that typically don't because you want to keep the water out. So, if you use too much grease, the barrel and socket pins act like a hydraulic ram and create enough pressure to spread the socket connector wider and now you have a bad or weak connection that's just waiting to fail either intermittently or a confusing diagnosis for no connection because the wiring tests good with your meter while disconnected.
@@KayakDIY I have been a professional mechanic for almost 30 years. First cars, now forklifts. It is definitely something I have to watch out for. Some connectors are more sensitive to it than others. Meaning, you could have the same brand/style on 2 different sizes, but 1 is known for contact surface spreading out and the other it's not an issue. But yes, this is 100% a real issue and not made up hypotheticals.
@@KayakDIY Now that I think about it, it may be smart to not have connectors on a kayak air tight. The grease will stop corrosion due to getting wet. And if it lets the water drain out on land, then it might also completely dry out with time. But if it's air tight and a little water gets in, there would be zero chance of it getting out on its own.
Most U.S states have similar laws. Only a few places I think in the world have laws specifically stating a certain pound thrust motor. For instance if you had under 30 pound thrust you wouldn’t need to register in some areas.
thank you for making this video. i think i'm gonna go with the isup configuration. never even knew this existed. perfect for fishing by me. THANK YOU!!!
No problem. Happy to help. Paddle Board Motor Mounts Are Here: lddy.no/8vsp Then Select "Bixpy SUP Adapter - Standard Fin Box" or other fin if you have a different style board. My iSUP used the standard fin box.
no you could not. A down payment maybe? or a very old boat? Have you ever thought that people enjoy fishing out of kayak more that boats in some cases? Sure maybe we spend a few grand to setup our kayaks, but after that we have no more maintenance or fuel costs. Also don't need a trailer.
@@thereelaccountant9246 im an avid kayak fisherman with about $1000 in my yak actually, so yes i completely understand. Also spending $4000 can get you a really nice boat. We're not talkin about wasting 60k on something brand new. Thats just foolish.
Holy hell what is up with all of the negative comments? Bunch of jealous assholes that don’t get what small craft ownership and fishing is all about? I’ve had my eye on a Hobie for a while. Very cool boat. And the Bixpy drive is slick. I’m currently running an Old Towne 14 foot/3 person canoe with a Minnkota motor and this is a very elegant single person dedicated fishing alternative. My setup altogether was about $1,000. Yours looks to be about $2,500. STILL way cheaper than a ‘real’ boat, you can go where they can’t, and you can enjoy the peace and quiet and be stealthy. Also the unboxing was awesome and I think necessary to show the setup of this unique product. Great video all around and ignore the haters! Subbed.
Should be able to do a rudder mount on the ocean kayak. That is how I did my Viking kayak and Vibe Kayaks use rudder mount setup too. I used to own a Ocean Kayak Malibu PDL....it was one of my favorite pedal kayaks of all time....especially for the money.
Dad most states have that requirement. Few places in the world don’t require registration unless it exceeds a certain thrust. Usually registration is cheap. Considering the enjoyment and fun of having a motor the registration is no big deal to me.
Thanks for the vid! BTW dielectric grease is an insulator and should never be applied directly onto terminals like that, only the connection body surround itself...
How is this working out? Why is the motor so deep running? Why not closer to the hull? What is the actual range, speeds for fishing salt flats with strong current?
Deeper running because that mount was designed to fit as many pedal drive kayak models as possible…so it had to be that draft to make that possible. You could customize it and shorten via a 5-$10 pipe cutter.
@@KayakDIY We have 2 of the 12 PA hobie 360 mirage and with the motor on the wrong adapter (long story and my fault) we were able to go 6 miles with top speed in the tide 3.8 km. The adapter for the non 360 mirage will have to be modified. Very impressed with speed and battery life is surprize! Still had 4 lights on after the first run. Did well with the incoming tide and wind issues in the canals. Bixpy support was very helpful.
*Fits nearly all kayaks and paddleboards.* lddy.no/3lir Motor has multiple mount options. Battery can achieve 10hrs+ of runtime in low setting. Runtime depends on kayak or paddleboard as well as speed setting used.
You aren’t alone in that concern. I will be bringing that concern up to Bixpy. Until then, any one remotely handy could shorten that shaft and make it draft a lot less. Just need a pipe tubing cutter. I did a video on shortening trolling motor shafts. This would be even easier.
The wireless remote and lightweight battery with Aux output for fishfinder are worth the extra cost to me. I’m 24/7 on the water so the added benefits that Bixpy offers is worth it to me. I honestly am not sure how they charge as little as they do. Lithium battery, R&D, wireless remote, and paying employees isn’t cheap. For $1000 I would say it is pretty good deal. The Watersnake mod did pretty well...it just isn’t quite as efficient, fast, and convenient.
You can now get out of his path quicker. It is a benefit to have it over not having it in that scenario. Also, a 35’ vessel at 35mph you should notice in advance. If you are in waters where you won’t be seen easily then you should be taking more measures to ensure they see and hear you.
Tons of them around here. This one had cool pattern. Rays are not bad eating. Wings are like scallops. They also use them for shark fishing. I usually just let them go though. I only keep what I can eat the same day. My wife doesn’t get eat much seafood.
Justin I would like ur opinion on the Bixpy motor. Bixpy is releasing a sonar pod version for the Bonafide line of kayaks. Which one do u think would perform better the rudder attachment or the pod version which is more toward the middle of the boat. The pod version will still require a rudder for steering. Thanks, I really enjoy your videos and u have the best logo out there.
Depends if you think you will go in the shallows. The pod won’t kick motor up if you hit shallows. The pod design did have a motor guard. Pod is really convenient mount design for taking on and off on days you don’t want to run motor or “anti theft”. You need a rudder no matter what for steering...or for Bixpy mounting. I liked the Bonafide pod design but I run consistently in deep enough water. You could easily pop Bixpy pod out if getting into shallow water. I will also consider paying you for Bixpy Bonafide Pod video footage if you get one. If you decide to buy “consider” supporting the channel by using this link: lddy.no/3lir
KayakDIY I just wasn’t sure if the Bixpy would perform better pushing from the stern or push/pull from the pod location. I’m also told that it will only stick out six inches from the bottom of the kayak.
It doesn’t stick very far below. Probably only 6in below the hull. The Hobie Bixpy Mount sticks further down below the hull because it has to in order to fit in all the Hobie pedal kayaks. The Bixpy for Bonafide pod will be really shallow draft. Definitely going to make for an awesome fishing kayak setup. Makes me want to buy a Bonafide. Makes the Bonafide incredibly versatile. Bixpy can run up to 10hrs and the new Bixpy kits have 12 speeds which will be great for freshwater trolling and saltwater. They added 2 speeds on the low end for freshwater trolling anglers.
KayakDIY Here’s some roll out dates . The Bonafide rudder will be out on the 20th, the Bixpy mount nearer the end of the month and my ss107 Fusion will be delivered in early October. It’s certainly good to be me😉. Even though we live in Florida I will have to rethink what shoes I’m goin to wear in the coming months. I wear Aleader’s now and it might not be the best shoe when the water temp changes but we will see.
More than likely. It is easy and cheap to register. Take the kayak’s manufacturers certificate of origin to your registration office. If you don’t have one ask the kayak manufacturer for one. They will need kayak hull serial number. Super simple process in most states. I think it is worth it.
I was using a gps app. I think called Vidometer. We had it on a hat mount. Only problem is we didn’t get the camera always pointed where it needed to be. We typically use gopros for filming not phones. Gopros have wider field of view. So the phone didn’t work well for filming, but it captured gps speed. Live and learn as they say.
It is. That is the big reason I have made so many videos on it. I bought the SwimJet first which is my favorite. After raving about it and contacting the company they sponsored me with other mounts to play with and share with viewers. I didn’t just get everything free. I paid for the motor, but got mounts free to try due to having the channel. It is pricey, but all things considered I think they could charge more. Other motor kits are more money and a lot less versatile than Bixpy.
wow ...its beautiful that is what i amlooking for..but i think its so expensive....iam.just a simple.fisherman here in our province....i think its good to put in business here in the philippines....
Excellent video and love the adaptation. The only problem, pertaining to Florida as I do not know what the legal requirements in other states, requires anything motor powered combustion or electric registration is required. Neat, keep up the good videos.
You can shorten it. They don’t want to because any shorter and it won’t fit as many of the (Hobie style) fin drive kayaks. This is the minimal length of shaft to fit the widest amount of the kayaks with one adapter. Else they would need multiple adapters. If you want to do it yourself it would take probably 10mins with a $5-10 pipe cutter. 🙂 We use this in red territory, but no doubt skinnier is always better. You could find out what depth works best for your pedal kayak and custom cut it to go shallower.
I definitely think you could. Just need a pipe cutter. Would take like maybe 10-15 minutes tops. Just know that if you cut the pipe shorter it won’t be compatible with as many fin drive style pedal kayaks. Right now they designed it to be the shortest possible and still fit the largest number of pedal kayaks with fin style drives.
*Yes, It fits and Hobie style pedal drive. It is awesome for the tandem island!* lddy.no/3lir You can have pedal drive in one slot and Bixpy motor in the other slot. I actually owned a Tandem Island and just sold it last year. Love Bixpy.
17Industries I won’t deny that they are pricey, but the handheld ones are a blast. I own the scuba model which has slightly bigger battery and negative buoyancy. The snorkel model has slightly smaller battery and positive buoyancy. You can still dive some with the snorkel edition and it will slowly float to the surface if you let go of it. The scuba edition will “slowly” sink if you let go of it. I wear a wrist lanyard so I don’t lose mine. I had a blast with my SwimJet at the Florida springs and Key West.
Thanks so much! Appreciate the kind words and loyal viewership! Couldn’t do what I do without people like you. Massachusetts is one place I haven’t been to yet. Someday in near future want to visit that area. Any recommendations?
I’ll keep my hobie pedals thanks. That thing sticking down so low is a liability and a hull crack waiting to happen. There’s no reason it needs to be that deep.

I have a P14 mirage drive and looking to buy this set up. I followed the link but I still don’t see the other parts in ur video could u please send me a link for what I need for the P14 thank you
*You will need the Bixpy Outboard kit and this Hobie Thru-hull adapter:* lddy.no/14y09
This motor and adapter kit will then fit Hobie & multiple brands of kayaks that use the fin style pedal drives. 😎👍
@@KayakDIY thank you so much will place the order with confidence now 🎣🎣🎣🎣
*Why Must The Shaft Length On The Bixpy Mirage Mount Be That Long?*
Some viewers think the mount should be shorter and draft less.
That's about normal for Kayak motor mounts... 12"
Interesting argument. The company recommends it. 🤷♂️
You would have to register this in Montana and have boat numbers on the sides.
Most U.S states have similar laws. Only a few places I think in the world have laws specifically stating a certain pound thrust motor. For instance if you had under 30 pound thrust you wouldn’t need to register in some areas.
Maybe a small wind gererator on a windvane like a sailboat?
thank you for making this video. i think i'm gonna go with the isup configuration. never even knew this existed. perfect for fishing by me. THANK YOU!!!
No problem. Happy to help.
Paddle Board Motor Mounts Are Here: lddy.no/8vsp
Then Select "Bixpy SUP Adapter - Standard Fin Box" or other fin if you have a different style board. My iSUP used the standard fin box.
For the price of that yak & motor you could have a pretty nice bass boat.
no you could not.

Subbed.
Can this motor be retrofitted to a Malibu PDL Ocean Kayak?
Should be able to do a rudder mount on the ocean kayak. That is how I did my Viking kayak and Vibe Kayaks use rudder mount setup too. I used to own a Ocean Kayak Malibu PDL....it was one of my favorite pedal kayaks of all time....especially for the money.
So my question is, is the jet drive better for smaller body rivers?
If you did this in NY, you would have to register it at DMV.
Nhìn nó thấy thích quá ! Biết bao giờ ở Việt Nam có bán ? :(
Nice would this work in a lighting strike kayak
Yes. I have a Lightning Kayak and used Bixpy on it via that mount.

Hey fellas!
How long does the battery long?
No more tha 40 mns for sure.
Isn't there a way to adjust the motor closer to the haul?
In what type oc kayaks will works ?How much time u can have energy with this battery?
*Fits nearly all kayaks and paddleboards.*
lddy.no/3lir
Motor has multiple mount options.
Battery can achieve 10hrs+ of runtime in low setting. Runtime depends on kayak or paddleboard as well as speed setting used.
@@KayakDIY thx bro!
Hi can you tell how much that set it too buy and were from cheer
Very cool, but the Hobie drive needs to be tucked up next to the hull. Hanging that low is crazy.
You aren’t alone in that concern. I will be bringing that concern up to Bixpy.
Until then, any one remotely handy could shorten that shaft and make it draft a lot less. Just need a pipe tubing cutter. I did a video on shortening trolling motor shafts. This would be even easier.
How long do u batterry setup last ? I seen a great dealt drill efoil setup but his 3hr batteries only lasted half hour flat out
I get 4 hours minimum usually but as high as 7hrs running lower speeds. It could get 10hours if I stayed in lowest speed but where is the fun in that!
Great video! Keep it up guys
Liked your hobie cassette watersnake setup better, it's a lot cheaper and doesn't hang down as much in the water,,just my thought.
Thank you sir 🙏 for your kind information and guidance
Looks cool in calm water. What happens when some yahoo comes flying by in a 35’ outboard at 35 mph?
You can now get out of his path quicker. It is a benefit to have it over not having it in that scenario. Also, a 35’ vessel at 35mph you should notice in advance. If you are in waters where you won’t be seen easily then you should be taking more measures to ensure they see and hear you.
@@KayakDIY they see me and couldn’t give a darn. The wakes can be quite severe.
Wow! That was pretty cool! Crazy looking ray
Cool. You should probably thread the strap through the battery handles.
*The battery actually floats and is waterproof!*
Although that isn’t a bad idea to help secure it to the deck. 🙂👍
Olá moro no Brasil em Saquarema. Gostei muito desse kit quero comprará 1
🤷♂️
Nice video. I can see disaster looming for those who traverse murky water, however. Sorry if I'm a negative Nancy.
For that they have a few stern mount options that kick up when hitting obstacles. 😊🤙
Mount it to the rudder at least if you hit something it kicks up. Plus the motor wouldn't be so deep
If I use this on my kayak in California would I have to register it?
More than likely. It is easy and cheap to register. Take the kayak’s manufacturers certificate of origin to your registration office. If you don’t have one ask the kayak manufacturer for one. They will need kayak hull serial number. Super simple process in most states. I think it is worth it.
@@KayakDIY great thanks! Great video, I never knew these existed! Be safe and be blessed!
Would be enough for a slowly Jon boat?
I would think so. I plan to use it in my 14ft fiberglass boat and test it. I think it is roughly 34lbs of thrust.
Pretty neat but why does it need to go so deep? Should be so the motor housing is right on the bottom of the hull.
Then the motor wouldn’t fit as many kayaks. That was determined to be the shortest shaft length for fitting the most kayaks.
Love the Albonian music.
I was travelling in sweden by train and met the hobie team from brazil that was in sweden to compete fishing
Really cool!
Sweden looks beautiful. Wife and I want to visit that area sometime.
Make your steering much more reflexive, and sharp.
You have a GPS overlay towards the end of the video. What GPS are you using? Curious / looking for an on water GPS myself. Thanks.
Can it be flipped around so you can go in reverse and troll?
Hey Cape Coral Fl, shout out. Thats awsome
I love living here.
Can’t imagine living anywhere else.... except maybe a Caribbean island. 😬👍
I thought that looked like West coast Florida water!
Shout out from Lakeland, FL!
Very cool! Looks like great fun! Thanks.
Great video guys!! I loved the loaded out Hobie. The Bixby topped it off!
I have a 2021 hobie outback, does the adapter works?
so do you need to register your yak ?

What is the name of the Artist & Song at the end of the video?
Have you considered shortening the downtube to allow for access to the reds? There is no reason it should cavitate at half the length it is.
We use this in red territory, but no doubt skinnier is always better. You could find out what depth works best for your pedal kayak and custom cut it to go shallower.
But why they make the prop shaft so long? Would be more versatile if they offered a shorter one
U think I could cut the blue pipe to make it a bit shorter ?
I definitely think you could. Just need a pipe cutter. Would take like maybe 10-15 minutes tops.
Just know that if you cut the pipe shorter it won’t be compatible with as many fin drive style pedal kayaks. Right now they designed it to be the shortest possible and still fit the largest number of pedal kayaks with fin style drives.
Is there a solar powered charger ?
good morning friend, I'm from Brazil what is the value of this engine?
Around $1100 usd.

How long do they run? Thanks Sid
My fiend and I get around 7-10hrs in speeds 1-3.
What exactly is the model of your Hobie? Thank you
Was wondering if it fits to a hobie Tandem island ?
*Yes, It fits and Hobie style pedal drive. It is awesome for the tandem island!*
lddy.no/3lir
You can have pedal drive in one slot and Bixpy motor in the other slot. I actually owned a Tandem Island and just sold it last year. Love Bixpy.
Awesome! I really want one of the handheld ones but they are soooo expensive
I would think the battery makes up the bulk of the cost
Cool!
But i thot dielectric grease meant non conducting?

Thanks so much! Appreciate the kind words and loyal viewership! Couldn’t do what I do without people like you. Massachusetts is one place I haven’t been to yet. Someday in near future want to visit that area. Any recommendations?
nice vid, how long does the battery last?
I’ll keep my hobie pedals thanks. That thing sticking down so low is a liability and a hull crack waiting to happen. There’s no reason it needs to be that deep.
I will bring up the concern to Bixpy. I never found it to be an issue, but I don’t stay in skinny water much.
Will this work with passport 10.5
I didn't know I wanted one of these. I know what I'm asking Santa for...er...yeah Santa. Way cool! Thanks for the information.

Do you have to use the bixpy battery? Or can you use an alternative deep cycle for longer range?
You have to use the Bixpy battery. The Bixpy doesn’t run on 12v. The battery 🔋 is 25.9v and 333Wh in size.
KayakDIY can you link more batteries in parallel?
Ben Davis no, although I have never needed to. I usually have battery life left over at end of most trips.
