    I had a mk1 Mr2 1985, a limited edition (green and silver) 25 years ago at the tender age of 20, bought from some dude in Queens Park, Wrexham (if you know the place, enough said) It was the only car that ever made me smile. Every single time I looked at it, or got into the car, I smiled. The 5th gear problem was alleviated with a shaped piece of plastic that held it in gear. Now at the age of 45 I am very lucky to own this very car in the video. I took it for a new tyre in Buckley tyres and the comment was you need to replace all of them , they're over ten years old and perishing, the exhaust has been replaced, as has the alternator, and it has has a full service from MR2-Ben in Sandycroft. As the video (or whatever young people call them these days) says, it has full service history and is absolutely mint. They still rev to 7+k and sound absolutely mint. Guess what, this is the second car that has ever made me smile. I'm keeping this baby but as you all will understand I can't stop looking at other cars of this era, in particular, the Renault Alpine, Porsche 928, 944 turbo etc etc and more than likely they will be just pipe dreams, but if you haven't any dreams then whats the point?

    Jumping out of gear in my experience is often a linkage problem linked with retaining springs and not necessarily the gearbox itself .Get the opinion of a toyota gearbox specialist before replacing boxes etc.

    • @Nemoticon
      @Nemoticon 5 років тому

      Correct, generally its the complication of pulling the linkages forward from the rear being a mid-engine car from that era. Its also the reason the shifting action can become notchy on high mileage cars, especially between 1st and 2nd and 2nd to 3rd.

    If you ever come across a decent LHD drive one of these, let me know. Solid examples of these on the mainland seem to have run out, and I would very much like one of these again. It was my first car 30 years ago, never should have got rid. Thank you so much for the video, it brought back many happy memories.

    i had an 87 here in the US . bought it in 92 with 21000 miles. it had blue cloth seats, and it was a t bar roof, so apparently they weren’t all leather. The car was definitely not modded. Some navy chief was the original owner, so it was lightly used to my delight. I bought that car for not much more hate you can buy one for now

    I was a after a weekend toy. Something I could work on but not a rotten one. Thought I’ll have a look for a white T bar model. Around 6 - 8 years ago could pick one for £500-1k.. now 5k for a rotten one, and 10k for a good one. 😂 no way are they worth that. So that was the end of that..

    Hi Ive just had a MR2 Mk1 inspected by a classic car company before purchase. All is good and he was happy with the vehicle but he did say that it idles at 1200 revs. Is this common? Many thanks.

  • @IamMagPie
    @IamMagPie 5 років тому

    As a Young boy growing up in the 1980s, I picked up a brochure of the MR2 at the dealership. Used to draw the MR2 and dream about it. Now I can buy it. But I just discovered that there is a supercharged version of the Mk1. But only in the USA. I am curious whether that version is so much better than a regular one found in Europe that I should try to get it instead...?

    • @parttroll1
      @parttroll1 5 років тому

      I had a a MK1 MR2 normally aspirated engine and it was a great car to drive. Yes the supercharged version is faster (0-60mph in 6.5sec compared to 8.2sec in the NA version).

    • @plausibleparadox3191
      @plausibleparadox3191 2 роки тому

      There should be a few SC models in Europe, but they'll be much more expensive than a 'normal' NA. Most SC's will have T-Tops, although I thought that I read somewhere that 88/89 models can have sunroofs (also closed roofs?) as well. Mk1a (85-87.5) should have 124-ish hp, where Mk1b models (87.5-89) should have 116-ish hp (due to the catalytic converter). The SC models have around 145 hp, the 0-62mph/ 0-100kmh times are said in the comment above :)

    Great video I brought my mr2 mk1a off an older fellow last year he owned it for 5 years brought it off someone that had blew the head and rings he also reconditioned the gear box sincro the 1st gear. There is a problem with the fan relay box so it's currently wired straight to the battery. I'm currently on fb mr2 pages and this seems to be a reoccurring issue of the fan not working due to the relay and owners blowing head gasket. Any ideas?

    • @SuperbClassics
      @SuperbClassics  8 років тому +1

      +Harriet Muir Hi Harriet, I never has any issues with the fan on any of my Mk1b's. These were all low mileage cars so this may be a problem with the Mk1a or just the higher mileage cars.
      I found the MR2 Mk1 Owners Club a great source of information on common problems, have you tried their forum yet? Friendly bunch :)

    I just bought an a white Mr2 with a fair bit of rust, but nothing crazy with one or two patches. One bit I wanted to know was how much the lower part of the front bumper and front bumper cost? Got the car for 400 pounds. Good deal with 100k on it?

    • @SuperbClassics
      @SuperbClassics  8 років тому

      +Nicolas del carlo bueno netto Congratulations Nicolas! You cant get much for £400 so the fact you have got yourself a relatively low mileage Mk1 is fantastic. You should be please! :)
      Take a look on eBay, there are always people breaking these cars so parts should be easy to find. In my experience the front splitter will set you back around £30 used and the front bumper bar used to be available from Toyota for around £150 new.
      Stick up a video of the beast!

    Going to look at a mk1 at the weekend. The stripes on the rear bumper are missing on it by the looks of it. Should I be worried about a bodge job? And also it hasn't been on the road for a couple of years, it's done 125k miles apparently, but I really like the look of the car
    www.wightbay.com/cars-for-sale/1986-d-toyota-mr2-16v-mk1/5011286

    • @SuperbClassics
      @SuperbClassics  8 років тому

      +Charliediggy Hey there, exciting times! Yes the missing stripes on the rear wing are a sure sign that someone has repaired the wheel arches in the past, not bothering to replace the decals.
      I actually have some stock of the decal kits for the Mk1b models left (contact me if anyone want a set) but am unsure of the availability of decals for the mk1a, which the car you are looking at is.
      Price wise you will find similar cars to this one for under £1,000, so the seller is really trying his luck here.
      When off the road for a while the rear brake callipers often seize (£100+ each) and the exhaust can rot where they join the boxes. Alternators can also seize which aren't that cheap for a mk1.
      Have you seen/driven a mk1 MR2 yet? If not go and see this one, but I wouldn't buy it at anywhere near that price. Lot roomier than the MX5 though - they are very snug!
      Good luck, let us all know how you get on :)

    • @Charliediggy
      @Charliediggy 8 років тому

      Thanks for the reply :) I phoned them up and i'm going to have a look at it properly either on Thursday or Saturday. I've been told from people that that price is quite cheap, it's already been reduced, never know i might be able to knock the seller down a little. I'll have a look at the brakes too. I heard the alternator bearings often go too
