    As an early Mk2 GTI that 8V engine should be a K-jetronic unit if made in 1987 or before. I believe the digifant 8v engines were introduced around 1988 on the minor Mk2 facelifts.

      As an 87 car it was likely a crossover model- hence why it might be fitted with a digifant 8v rather than K-Jetronic

    Thanks for this. Big GTI fan and though I have a pretty good tech knowledge of em, a lot of. Icy rust issues I probably would've missed on without this guide. Thanks for the tips and I hope to find a decent GTI soon.

    This isn't a defitive way to check a headgasket. I just use a CO2 Leak Down Tester. Fluid changes from blue to green or yellow then it's fubar. Most people will wipe the oil cap down to remove the mayonaise and change the coolant out before you come to fool you into believing it isn't gone. I go into buying every car with the assumption it's got a problem and they want shot of the vehicle for said problem. Applies even more to dealership traded in cars.

      @gti20vtMarcel 6 років тому +1

      8ile you're right, the mayo can also form with riding short distances too much! Also pure coolant is slippery too.
      Further the coolant in this GTI looks black! So probably oil in the coolant.

    If your car has felt on wheel arch, cut it back, as it traps water and crud. We had a 16v version for 10 years and it was a brilliant car. It seemed to get faster as it aged, the engines loosen up a bit. Ours had well over 100k when we sold it. The new guy wrote it off!

    i feel sick that i sold my mk 2 16v big bumper 3dr in oak green for relative peanuts in the late 90's!

    Great guide! I would just avoid flared MK2s altogether coz those things seem to trap water and just ruin the cars. Small bumper cars with no flares if I had a choice!

    Great help mate and great advice.. I'm going to take a look at a 1990 gti, white like this one this week. Hopefully its as good as the seller says it is. Would you recommend a milage break point where you would walk away? I think this one has 140k miles racked up. cheers

    • @SuperbClassics
      @SuperbClassics  8 років тому

      +Fruice Lee Thanks Man, no I wouldn't dismiss it just because the car has done 140k. If looked after and not abused these engines are good for 200k plus. You want to make sure there is plenty of service history and in my opinion, less than 5 previous owners. These types of cars are notorious for being owned by a few boy racer who in will have abused them and not serviced them. Best of luck, let me know how you get on ;)

    I have an American spec 92 GTI 16v with a 2.0 16v. What should I look out for on my car now with 193k? I’ve had it since 99. Over the years a distributor or two and seaks as well as cooling system and fuel pump needs were most common repairs. Just did another timing belt, tensioner, and serpentine belt as well S front engine seals. Could use a valve cover gasket but not too bad.

    Nice guide. The heater cores were recalled in a lot of VW Golfs due to burning risk when failing. The plastic behind the door panels was sloppy design and can leak due to poor installation or failure of adhesives; all should be replaced with an improved DIY solution.

      Well that shouldn't be the case on on a car like this suggests the head gasket has failed.

      Much the same as they are essentially the same cars. Love the old Jettas... Would love to get my hands on a GT model some day.
