@@hydroy1 Different applications. You can’t run that V-drive in shallows, mini jet boats running on rivers and streams is a blast. You should try it and you would be a fan of both driving methods.
Regarding suction, you're partially correct. If you could measure the velocity of the water entering the jet drive at full throttle with the boat tied to the dock, that would be your "max suck speed". As soon as the boat travels faster than that, you no longer have suction at the intake. Enough forward velocity will produce a ram effect, where your jet drive will become more efficient, since you would have relative pressure sitting at the front face of the impeller. Now, this is all based on aerodynamics, not hydrodynamics, so there will be a little difference due to water being incompressible. I'm a jet engine specialist with the Royal Canadian Air Force.

@@rondye9398: Not really, unless you're assuming the atmospheric pressure on the whole lake is what's pushing water into the jet pump. What that system really is, is a ducted, shrouded propeller whose water stream is enclosed, rather than simply exposed to the water in the lake. The forward moving force is the result of Newton's Third Law of Motion as applied to water. Specifically, if you take in a lot of the stuff in a short amount of time and pump it out at high velocity, you get a jet force. Finnegan's contention is that because the jet pump (an impeller or ducted propeller, if you wish) is drawing water in, then it is that "suction" that is "sucking" the boat through the water. But that's like saying a jet engine "sucks" itself through the air. That may work for a "ducted fan" -- which is the "bypass" stage of large jet engines -- or a multi-blade propeller inside a shroud, but ultimately what moves a jet-driven vehicle of any sort is the reaction of throwing a large volume of fluid out the back.
Love it. Almost 50 years ago I had a 21 foot jet drive. It had an electric trim up adjust the up angle! I used to get a rooster about like the second try! You can sink the boat behind you with it!

Now make it so that all of the water jet goes out of the water. That would show how much of the forward motion is gemerated by the jet and how much is just the water being pumped trough the impeller. Also it would shoot a monster rooster tail!

You guys are awesome!! The Finnegan group of guys, KSR and Cleetus among many others have given me so many ideas for building my 1972 vw super beetle. All in all the build that I wanted to be a handling quick car turned into a very different build. It is now in the process of being a 600hp 1800lbs car that I am super excited about. Thanks guys!!
You should build a standard beetle not a super beetle. The super might handle better but that curved windshield and big old front end are gross. Plus the strut towers crack. Standards also weigh 1500 to 1600 lbs. and that’s with a 4 point cage a roof rack and subs and amps. Just saying. Also 600 hp? Is that a turbo T1 or turbo T4, Subaru EJ, turbo 2 rotor? Is your super a 1302 or a 1303?
Boys and their toys. Fun in the rain and lighting! When I was much younger, and boats didn't have water jet propulsion, guys would put a water scooping device on back of their boats that they keep up until they wanted to make the rooster tail then lower it via a cable and there goes the water plume in the air.
Imparting work to the water is what moves the boat. You accelerate the water backwards, all physical reactions being equally and opposite, you therefore accelerate the boat forward.
What’s with this BS that “the jet boat is pulling itself through the water”. There is a suction force present and necessary for the jet drive to function, but the resulting negative pressure present at the inlet is distributed equally in all directions. Water is pulled from the front, sides, rear and bottom. Any directional motion resulting from the water rush in to equalize the pressure at the inlet is the result of flow resistance. There is some miniscule directional bias naturally inherent to the system which results in some forward bias, but saying the boat is being pulled through the waters is akin to saying that because a drag strip has a slightly negative grade that gravity is pulling the dragster forward, while technically true, in the context of how the dragster is propelled forward, the contribution of gravity is infinitesimal and a valueless statement.
After a quick read on waterjets, I would say the system is pushing, due to the waterjet creating "thrust". But, I think the question of push or pull has more to do with the placement on the vehicle. If the engine and waterjet were mounted on an extended arm in front of the boat, it could be described as pulling. But mounted anywhere on the boat itself is still pushing. Or is it if the waterjet were on the front of the boat? If I tow your car with a rope, that's pulling. If I pull up behind you and push, that's obviously pushing. I think Mike is just trash talking for humor value, but it's a fun thought experiment. Is a front wheel drive automobile pushing or pulling the car forward? Would forward being pulling and reverse be pushing? In a front engine car with rear wheel drive, everything in the drivetrain is pushing, all the way to the axle/s...if it's a manual transmission. But what about an automatic? A torque converter could arguably be pulling. When the engine side spins up, the other side follows, spinning the drive shaft, etc. Once it's spun up, I think it probably reaches an equilibrium of push/pull, since it starts to behave as one unit. But on spin up, the back half of the torque converter is definitely following, which implies it's being dragged along, which is obviously more pulling than pushing. If you take a high pressure water hose and drop it, it will turn into a wild snake and start spraying water all over the place. Is the water pressure pushing the hose around, or is the hose being pulled up the water column? Or is it both? (Newton's 3rd law)
