Hi Mark 😃 I can’t thank you enough! Without your knowledge and expertise I would never have gotten the Bell 407 off the ground. You’re a gem my friend thanks SO much! After your recommendations I thoroughly enjoyed my first flight in a helicopter 👍 Thanks so much! Happy flying!!
I have a Logitech Wingman Extreme joystick, and I noticed that there is a Helicopter profile for my joystick already in FS2020. I used that profile & I made some custom changes. The default profile uses the rudder whereas the Helicopter profile uses the tail rotor. I could not control the helicopter with the tail rotor without the helicopter spinning out of control with even the slightest twist, so I set mine back to rudder. That made it much more manageable.

Hi, You need one setting for the collective, and you also need a second setting for the throttle on the collective. This is necessary for autorotations and the like. I am trying to set up my "MaxFlightStick Helicopter Flight Simulator Control Systems" and am trying to locate the proper setting for the twist-grip throttle.
Thank you for the tips. I couldn't get heli up and when it was up it was always spinning. After watching this tutorial it made things more easy and manageable. You got another subscriber :) (Playing with a dualshock 4 controller btw)
Thanks Mark, really helpful. I just came across this today having more or less given up on heli's in MSFS. Followed your fix and now flying the Cabri like a dream (without the assistance options either !). Even managed a very hairy ILS landing in near zero visibility !!! Keep up the good work.
Mark the Master strikes again! Many thanks for a clear and concise beginner's rotorcraft tutorial. I'm just starting my foray into helos, so this was definitely valuable! I initially looked at the default V1 Flightstick Xbox helo profile and promptly got kind of glassy-eyed and slack-jawed...maybe with A LOT more flying time! 🙃 On my V1 Flightstick/rudder pedals, after playing around a bit with your suggested settings, I set Hat 1 for increase/decrease longitudinal (up/down) and lateral (left/right) trims. That keeps my right hand on the stick all the time, accessing all the lateral and longitudinal inputs, and frees up my left hand to control the collective via the left-hand lever. Still use Hat 2 for freelooking (thanks for the sensitivity suggestion!) and recentering cockpit and external views. I was going to ask about how to make a separate throttle assignment (the twist grip part of the collective) but I read further down in the comments that you wanted to keep this tutorial basic...I totally agree and we're glad you did! I'm not a "purist" by any means, but flying with the auto-throttle (governor?) engaged...does that detract from the overall realism of things? (LOL...not that I'm going to hop in the real thing next week or month for a test flight...). I see a few others have advocated using a binding under "propeller" for that input, but how to do that on the Flightstick in the same "plane" as using the left-hand lever for the collective is beyond me... Cheers!
Thanks for the tutorial. Just received my flightstick, and you saved a lot of headaches for me with this inclusive video! Didn't realize how fun, if not semi-frustrating flying a helicopter can be!
Great stuff, helicopters do have throttles though, it’s a twist action on the collective. Unless you turn on the governor switch you have to manually change the throttle. 👍
As this is aimed at beginners and an introduction to heli’s and assumed the governor would be on, I have ignored the throttle config for this tutorial.
Thanks for the great video. Fixing the bug was the key. My T.1600 joystick had a pre-defined helicopter profile in the MSFS PC. There will be fewer screams coming from FSR now 🤣
My grateful thanks again for the helicopter profile settings. I made a couple of slight changes for convenience but I almost looked like a good helicopter pilot first time out.
Thank you so much for this video. I had no idea about the flight model bug and thanks to you I've finally fixed my sim and can actually start enjoying helos at last!
Thanks for the tips and settings. I've been using the X52 under the old, pre-helo capabilities settings, so the transition to the new pro-helo settings is just easier using your findings. Cheers, and Happy Christmas, SHFS!

Is there such videos or guides to help someone fully configure it to what they want, ie jets, helicopters, fighter jets.
Another useful and excellent video. I use the VelocityOne but I should be able to follow this and setup it up on that. I haven't flown the helicopters yet but hope to do so soon.
Thank you this was very useful. Unfortunately I have the collective mapped to the joystick throttle lever like you, this resutls in crossed arms sometimes and I would prefer if it could be mapped to a throttle lever on my throttle quadrant but I have not been successful in doing so yet.
Thanks a lot for this video. I LOVE helos but i didnt knew how to configure the correct controls. And now i may to flght It in the correct settings. Thanks and sorry for my english and the autorrect.. thanks.
Ok, great guide. Unfortunately, I don't have a stick (the VelocityFlightone yoke); I will try and use the settings you showed in the video. One difference is I'm only flying using VR, recently upgraded to HP reverb G2 and trust me, the whole experience of flying a helicopter is at a totally new level.
Thanks for the great tutorial. In it, I found out how to fix the issue I was having. By going back to the Legacy Flight model and setting it to Realistic (100%) then restarting and going back to Modern flight I was finally able to get the Helicopters to fly correctly.
Thank you so much for this fantastic video. Now I can control the helicopter much better :) I will keep the "gear down/up" button incase they will make a helicopter for to use with that. Also thank you for talk so clear. It makes me forget that english is not my main language :)
Thanks Mark, very good info! I must tell you that my camera button (H2) does not stick and works fine with 0 dead zone. Maybe you should return yours for warranty replacement.......
Thanks for the info, appreciate it. I included it as a number of users had mentioned this on discord and forums. Not sure how much of an issue it really is?
Dear Sim Hanger FS, Thank you an excellent and very clearly presented video. I would very much appreciate your advice regarding settings (sensitivity, dead zone, neutral, extremity dead zone and reactivity) to give the most realistic experience for, a MSFS Robinson R22 used with R22-like cyclic, collective and pedal hardware. I realise that a MSFS couldn't be completely like the real thing but it would be useful to have it as near as possible. If you don't have the information for the R22 do you have anything for the Calibri? I know so many people suggest setting things to personal preference and everything is determined by the nature of the hardware but there must be some ball-park "realistic settings" out there that can act as a starting point for achieving realism. Thank you very much. Kind regards, Harald.
@@HaraldSurstrommimg I don’t, but check out my tutorial that will help you fine tune your settings. ua-cam.com/video/fOZfymIJR5U/v-deo.htmlsi=hFcCJUWgzZVw6q3J
Question: Are there CFG files in MSFS by other Simmers that can be downloaded and used to speed setup along? I seem to remember earlier version where this could be done.
Hi Mark, love this video. Do you intend do produce a specific video setup for the Virpil helicopter controls with MSFS 2020. That would be very helpful for all virpil users including me. Keep up the good work.
Helicopters DO have throttles. And they are necessary for important flight maneuvers such as autorotations. The collective will increase the throttle because of the Correlator (that links the collective to the throttle), and the RPM is also governed by the Governor. Helicopters have a twist-grip throttle on their Collective lever (twin-engine helis have 2 on there). You use the twist grip throttle to override the Governor, or you override the correlator when doing autos, etc. So in order to Fly the MSFS Simulator like a real helicopter, you need to have one binding/setting for the Collective and a different one for the twist-grip Throttle. This should be possible as you can click the twistgrip with the mouse and move it, but I can't figure out how to set up the Control Options to be used with the MaxFlightStick, helicopter Control system (that has a realistic collective lever with twist-throttle).
Hi Mark thanks for your videos keep them coming I thought I'd revisit this video of yours to see what I'm doing wrong but I can see you haven't actually mapped the throttle side of the collective as if you were in a real helicopter I understand lifting the collective up and down changes the pitch on the rotor blades and on a real helicopter it has a twist throttle which controls the engine and rotors once they are married up the same some helicopters like the Capri will have a governor when you turn the governor on you can let go of the throttle as it will be governed automatically by the governor and you can just raise and lower the collective as per normal and the RPMs will take care of themselves I am struggling to map this feature on my system I have a proper collective with a twist throttle but I can't work out how to map it so the if I turn the governor off the throttle will work the RPM and the collective will work the pitch but when I turn the governor on it doesn't take control like it should do you have any idea how I could fix this?
@@SimHangerFS yes both assisted tail rotor and assisted cyclic have been turned off in control options. under my collective under power management the collective axis is mapped to Z and if I map a throttle there is a "set helicopter throttle axis" I map that to my twist throttle axis Y and validate it, apply and save then go for a fly and it doesn't work correctly. Grrr
One thing I did see is there are apparent conflicts with the Honeycomb Yoke and Throttle body. Controls seem to share the same names (joystick axis-x, for example)
@@SimHangerFS Hey Mark; it's on a PC. I've had the Honeycomb yoke and throttle body for a while now, and actually just upgraded to the new rudder pedals. As a fixed wing pilot in real life, I thought it would be fun to try a rotorcraft which is why I decided to try out the new joystick. Once I set up a profile for helicopters (using your video, thanks!) the first thing I noticed was the new collective (joystick R axis Z) was not working. I then noticed that my throttle (black) on my Honeycomb throttle body was controlling it; looks like they share the same name. Same for the yoke. Anyway, once I unplugged those two units the joystick works great. Was not expecting to have to do that.
I never configured Cyclic/Collective axes - it is mapped to ailrones/elevators and throttle on my sim. And helicopters are flyable. Is this really needed?
First of all thank you for the video. I'm new to MSFS. I have my controller setting to gamepad (helicopters). I'm able to increase/decrease collective & throttle to lift off the ground but I can't seem to move the choppy forward. Been trying for the last hour. What am I missing, please help?
@simhanger i have a virpil twist grip colective controller but it cannot be binded to the sim the twist part of the collective on the bell helicopter. Can you help us
Hi Mark, thank you for the valuable explanation! Do we need to change the flight model each time we want to fly a helicopter or doing it once is enough? This fix should be done for each helicopter?
So, do you have to switch from modern, to legacy, then modern every time you launch the sim? Or is that a one time “fix” and you shouldn’t have to repeat it ever again?
Very useful control setup guide. I had to do a lot of research and ask questions at Sergio and Drew aka BelGeode and others to know all this that you nicely summarized in your video. Great job. This works great for the G2 & Bell 407. sadly enough non of the Hype ones so the H-135 & H-145 don't use these new controls. Those will stay in my hanger till they get with the program :-)
From my point of view, you have got it backwards. Get with the program? They have been ahead of the program. Hype had helicopters in MSFS over a year before Asobo finally pulled their heads out of their alternate stowage bins. They had to make their own controls schemes because the game neglected to include anything for vertical flight. I'm glad that helicopters finally are supported in MSFS but it only took them what, three years to get around to something that should have been included from the start.
@@jssamp4442 Yes, respect to Hype to build and made flight possible in helicopters even when they where not supported. But now they are and they just start to adapt in their latest beta 355 to use some of the new controllers bindings. I'll have to go fly it to test it. I bought the H-145 early access on day one to support them. Eventually all helicopters will work with the new controllers bindings. Hype H-145 Beta Build 355 - Implement trims in AFCS on and off modes (new helicopter bindings) - Fixes for high speed cruise - Fixes for NAV and HDG - Bambi bucket and cargo hook have dynamic weight Known issues: - Custom key bindings are still inop - Rotor startup and shutdown is VERY sluggish in comparison to the past - NAV is working but not properly handling the cross-track value, it will be fixed in the next one
Very very nice video, thank you very much, I am part of a community of helicopter fans, and helicopters have been in flight simulator for over 1 year thanks to an external flight module, now many of them are being upgraded to SU11 with native flight dynamics... maybe you could do a video on the free helicopters available for MSFS ?, Please contact me if you need additional information...
Thanks Mark for another great tutorial. You make everything look so easy. I configured my T.Flight Hotas One to all of the controls that you identified in the video. I can make the helicopter go up and down with the collective and rotate using the twist grip as my rudder and I can pitch up, down and left and right with the joystick and trim controls. What I can't figure out is how to move the helicopter forwards, backwards and side to side. Any idea what I might be doing incorrectly? Please let me know, thanks and keep up the great work.
Make sure you have pilot assist functions turned off except the two specifically for helicopters. To move forwards start to increase altitude and then (for example) push the nose down whilst maintaining or increasing collective (throttle). The heli will start to move forward slowly… increase pitch down of the nose to maintain same altitude and so on. As the heli gains speed adjust throttle and pitch angle as required.
This is so confusing as a console player. My head actually started to hurt. No disrespect to you though. The video was very informational. But I just couldn’t figure anything out. I’m very new to flight sim games. So maybe that’s why I can’t figure this out on my own lol.
Dear Sir, I have been following your videos and excellent guidance since purchasing MSFS. I am in my seventies so its been a learning curve and without your wonderful assistance I would still be sitting on the end of the runway pondering my next move. I am using an Xbox S controller my grandchildren purchased for my birthday. I have finally progressed from my faithful Cessna 152 to Helicopters. I have revisited your videos with reference to ‘Sensitivity Settings’ and they have been so informative and useful with fixed wing aircraft on Xbox. Perhaps Helicopters at my age are a little beyond my capabilities. Sensitivity settings. Should I just stick with Xbox Heli Default Profile or are there a few tweaks to steady things? I have assists ON and practice regularly but I keep considering sensitivity is my issue. Any assistance would be sincerely appreciated.
Try turning sensitivity for rudder and cyclic down to -50% to -70%…leave your collective (throttle) straight line. Also the default helicopters in MSFS are overly sensitive.
Thanks for the video instructions. I have the Logitech flight yoke and rudders. I setup everything exactly how described as well as set the model to Modern (it was such already, but set it to legacy and back to Modern after restarting each time). I am still unable to have a stable take off. Even with very slowly getting to ~60% power and making very minor adjustment, the copter goes unstable by rocking left and right mostly then I crash. I tried a flight that was initiated at altitude to narrow it down to ground effect. The first few seconds are OK wit a lot of active control (very small inputs). But also quickly lose control. Can't tell what is going on other than I admit that I can't fly them. But really, I am not new to flight simming! Am I missing something else?
They are difficult to master, small adjustments are needed to maintain a hover. Recommend your controls don’t have the sensitivity turned down like you would for an aircraft.
Useful and informative video. slightly misleading perhaps regarding the collective and throttle. The Collective more accurately alters the pitch of the main rotor blades collectively. I.e. raising the collective increases the pitch the equivalent of increasing the angle of attack of a fixed wing aircraft. the Cabri and 407 both do have throttles, for the 407 it is not really modelled and the governor on the Cabri is switched on by default so it really negates the need for the pilot to manage the throttle manually. I.e. the governor basically manages or rather “governs” engine power to compensate for the changes in drag induced by collective position for example. The net result is though rather similar to raising engine power on a prop plane but you go up rather than forward. 😉
Whilst I am no expert I am aware of some of the points raised, however a simplified explanation served the purpose of helping viewers find the relevant controls in the config options.
Hello, thanks for this in depth tutorial! I have a question; when you said the heli switches back to the legacy flight model, in your flight sim it still says "modern". I have checked in my flight sim and it also did not switch to legacy, it says "Modern". Is the bug fixed?
What about throttle, its not letting me control by keyboard or keypad keys? If you point at the throttle by mouse, You can increase or decrease while trying to fly, but not very effective for viewing outside aircraft. I can't imagine a real helo pilot taking his eyes off of terrain to look down at a throttle! or collective. The main point is this sim wont allow or is bugged for assigning the throttle power.
A beginners guide to configuring the necessary helicopter controls to your chosen peripheral. Hope it helps 😊

Thanks for the great tutorial. In it, I found out how to fix the issue I was having. By going back to the Legacy Flight model and setting it to Realistic (100%) then restarting and going back to Modern flight I was finally able to get the Helicopters to fly correctly.
Thank you so much for up loading this i can now fly my AH-64 Apache in MFS
Amazingly clear tutorial. Nicely paced too. My first attempt at helis was a disaster but this enabled be to nail it first time. Thanks again. :D
Really Mark, thank you so much for this instruction video. I would have never figured it out without your video. Keep them coming!
Thank you very much for this!
@ 2:17 does this correction have to me for each subsequent flight, or is this a one time switch?
One time.
Great vid, thanks! Do I have to do the sim bug fix everytime I want to fly Heli again?
No, that bug is now fixed.
Thanks Mark, I've got some configuration to do ! Wish me luck :)
Thank you so much for this fantastic video. Now I can control the helicopter much better :) I will keep the "gear down/up" button incase they will make a helicopter for to use with that. Also thank you for talk so clear. It makes me forget that english is not my main language :)
Thank you so much sir ;) it was very helpful ;)
In DCS the Huey had collective and Power axis. One increases RPM one makes the heli go up or down.
Where do we control the RPM in MSFS?
You can, via config, separate throttle and collective if desired. Not covered here as a more advanced option.
Mines a disaster, glad I found this🎉
Question: Are there CFG files in MSFS by other Simmers that can be downloaded and used to speed setup along? I seem to remember earlier version where this could be done.
No not available unfortunately. Something needed within the sim. The config files are hidden and inaccessible.
Hi Mark, love this video. Do you intend do produce a specific video setup for the Virpil helicopter controls with MSFS 2020. That would be very helpful for all virpil users including me. Keep up the good work.
Again thank you for the video. Very good guide.
The trims font seem to be working in the AS350
Thank you very much.
Make sure you have the pilot (helicopter) assists both off then they work independently. You can map throttle separately to axis of buttons.
Grrr
@@mattathm SU12 has further helicopter config changes. Try it now. You may find it more responsive to map throttle to buttons?
@@SimHangerFS thanks... but alas no difference for me.
One thing I did see is there are apparent conflicts with the Honeycomb Yoke and Throttle body. Controls seem to share the same names (joystick axis-x, for example)
Xbox or PC?
Push the joystick forward so the helicopter leans forward and it will start to move and gain speed.
Excellent as always. Thank you!
Just do it once in the sim and your done.
This was very helpful, thank you! 👍😁
Great video thanks. My only issue it the sensitivity I use Xbox game pad unfortunately any advice ? Also the thumb sticks don’t seem to centre?
Use the controller assist function. Thumb sticks not centring correctly is a common hardware problem
@@SimHangerFS yes got those both on
Amazing)) thanks a lot, now it's all clear for me))
top man the legacy bit worked for me :))
So, do you have to switch from modern, to legacy, then modern every time you launch the sim? Or is that a one time “fix” and you shouldn’t have to repeat it ever again?
Should be a one time switch.
How do you turn on auto Rotor Control? Help.
Hype H-145 Beta Build 355
- Implement trims in AFCS on and off modes (new helicopter bindings)
- Fixes for high speed cruise
- Fixes for NAV and HDG
- Bambi bucket and cargo hook have dynamic weight
Known issues:
- Custom key bindings are still inop
- Rotor startup and shutdown is VERY sluggish in comparison to the past
- NAV is working but not properly handling the cross-track value, it will be fixed in the next one
Very very nice video, thank you very much, I am part of a community of helicopter fans, and helicopters have been in flight simulator for over 1 year thanks to an external flight module, now many of them are being upgraded to SU11 with native flight dynamics... maybe you could do a video on the free helicopters available for MSFS ?,
Please contact me if you need additional information...
@@SimHangerFS That worked perfectly, thanks so much Mark. I greatly appreciate your assistance and awesome videos!
İt is change everything for helicopter now very realistic thank you ....
This is so confusing as a console player. My head actually started to hurt. No disrespect to you though. The video was very informational. But I just couldn’t figure anything out. I’m very new to flight sim games. So maybe that’s why I can’t figure this out on my own lol.
I got anxiety setting up two types of sticks.....I love my 500 and cant wait till its one day in VR.
Dear Sir,
I have been following your videos and excellent guidance since purchasing MSFS.
I now can fly a helicopter! yay! (yes can't land it yet..but still).. Thank you!!
Hi Mark do you have any tips for a setup for the xbox controller?
Hi, the game pad now has a default profile. This video may help ua-cam.com/video/Li69-z4CRh4/v-deo.html
Bug now fixed.
@@SimHangerFS thanks!
I have been using Mi-8 for some time in DCS. MFS is not even close to that feeling.
F2 & F3
Is there not also a twist throttle on the collective? How do we set this Mark? Cheers.
Yes there is, you can enable this by assigning Throttle to one of the lever axis and turning off the assist for combined throttle/collective
@@SimHangerFS Thanks will try that.
