My father rock was one of the original members of Rare essence, He used to play also with E.U, Mass extension and a whole lot of other go go bands. Grew up around good men also aroun uptown.
I never learned a beat so quickly! Thank you for this amazing lesson! Also, thanks for the go-go artists list. I'm gonna start deep diving the genre now!
Max, thank you so much for breaking it all down for us. I’ve been playing for a lot of years but still struggle with grooves for sure and your method of going slow and putting all the notes together piece by piece is such a big help. You have such a gift for teaching !! Thank you !! Blessings, Brian
I wish I could like this more than once. I can’t explain Go Go as well as you because it’s second nature to me, it in my veins, but you explained it well. Thanks Bro.
I'm from the DMV and played in a go-go band in the late 80's. Yes Ricky (Sugar foot) Wellman was an excellent talent. I enjoyed your explanation and video.
I think this would be perfect way for older people to keep brain functions and motoric abilities in better shape. Maybe it would also prevent alzheimer and such diseases.
That is a really cool beat.I will have to work on this. The way you teach is really awesome.Pretty easy to understand.I would be interested in seeing this particular beat written out.
This is awesome. I love DC Gogo but the beat has always been tough for me to figure out. Thanks for breaking it down in such an accessible way! Would love to see more videos like this.
Represent DC my brother that's where I from!! DC!! DC!! But that is 100% true I used to be in gogo band and I still listen to gogo music every now and then. Gogo is basically a African upbeat rhythm mix with r&b, funk, and rock. It's all about the drums.. And I'm a Drummer/Percussionist..
*GoGo King right here* 🎶🥁🎼 *dis is da basics...even then uu have 2 learn & study it more 2 get the real GoGo sound & swag..GoGo can only be done right from GoGo band playerz...glade uu respect out art & form..*
Thx! I've never played in a GoGO band but did tour with an MC from Maryland and he turned me on to GoGo music. Fell in love as soon as I heard it for the first time. Thanks for your comment :)
*I'm da real deal....people never heard real Go-Go before...listen to my channel to hear the real Go-Go swag on the set...its not swung...its just a natural movement to the beat cuz I am a drummer also once uu learn it...its nothing like it* 🥁🎶
Love the approach, love the grooves, love sounds. This reminds me of Zigaboo's style.. on Sissy Strut etc. Thankyou so much for you work and generosity giving away this great knowledge.
I've been following you for probably over a decade now. Your videos always brighten up my day and inspire me to sit behind the kit. Do you offer video lessons?
Good golly this is tricky for a beginner! Is there a kick, high hat, kick and high hat at the same time at the end leading into the start (kick open high hat)? So basically 3 quick kicks to finish the first measure leading into to second?
@@dimsunk no, you did a great job! Thanks! I’m just going to practice it more! I always thought I wanted to learn rock, but after discovering you, this style is my goal, now!
Love the tutorial, how you split it up in single or double notes. Just the end was to quick. Like I struggle with connecting the last note with the first note. A tip on that would be extra cool. But still, 100%
Ok figuered it out in the second session 👌 Never thought I learn a new groove so fast! Thank you again. Ps where were you when I tried the halftime shuffle 😭
Mental note, keep adding notes between the bass 16th 8th then 16th note, but don’t forget the crazy notes between the hats and snare notes...!!!! Dude, too many notes..... but when played its got a mad coolness groove, I like it.!!!
If any of you would like an example of a tune with this beat .... check out Kevin Eubanks tune ... COOKIN’ .... no drums but this brilliant beat boxer / trumpeter Mark Ledford mouths the Beat beautifully........ you can find the tune on Kevin’s album ... In Search Of The Searcher .
Fantastic lesson. I have been waiting for years for someone to analyse and break this stuff down. Ricky Wellman’s playing is exquisite and more complex than it sounds. Lovely lesson- please do more on this groove. Thanks so much
I haven't heard the words Go Go mentioned since the 60"s :() Play the lick first then do the break down. Was that tempo? If not I'd like to hear it at tempo.

Nice info, but still. It would be nice to hear the actual beat. Anyway, thanks for the quick reply! Digging your stuff. Great tone and feel. Big up!

Miles Davis' later albums like Tutu and Amandla were influenced by go go rhythms. I think Ricky Wellman also played with him.
Yes he did. Great albums and amazing drumming. Ricky Really gave the songs a Gogo flavour :)
