Rubbish weather to be picking a car like that up in, but was similar for me when I got mine, and I had further to travel, and I didn't take any wipers with me! This has pleased me - I will look forward to some Triumph content in due course. Excellent Remi, what a lovely car!

Ah, the joys of driving an unknown old car a long distance home. I did it, almost a year ago, with Clementine the ‘54 Rover 90. 3 hour drive from mid north NSW back to sunny Lithgow in the Blue Mountains on country back roads. A fun drive but, thankfully, no problems. Then I replaced ignition parts that were only just hanging on and gave her a good tune up. The Stromberg Carbys are similar in function and tuning to the SU. Have twin Strongberg 175CD on Black Betty the ‘66 Humber Super Snipe.

Great little car, Alex. I had a Mk1 Vitesse 2.0l saloon many years ago, and it was great to drive. You two will have hours of fun with that, just beware of the rear suspension causing odd handling if you lift of the power in bends. They were notorious for rear wheel camber changes, jacking one rear wheel up, as the other tucks in. They have a single rear leaf spring, bolted across the diff as the upper suspension link. Later cars had modifications to improve the handling. My Vitesse had the sloppy gear change too, and it's an easy fix. Just replace the bushes in the selector link, you can do it, sat in the car. The fibreboard tunnel cover unbolts to expose the whole gearbox. You can even change the clutch that way, just ensure the tunnel cover seal is good on refit, or it will let water in. You need to replace the rubber diaphragms in Stromberg carbs regularly. They deteriorate with fuel contact, more so with modern fuels. Even a tiny pinhole will cause poor ecconomy, and rough running. They work like an SU carb, and the rubber diaphragm controls the vacuum that lifts the fuel needle and piston. They have the same oil in the dashpot, and the diaphrams are as easy to change as lifting an SU piston out. The mixture is usually adjusted with a Stromberg jet tool, down the dashpot oil tube.

I’ve had a couple of Heralds…a lot of fun…but never get caught a bit too fast on a bend and have to brake…the back wheels will tuck under and cause a brown stain in your underpants. I recognised the herald sound as soon as it started…but I think you’re gonna have to recarb that buildurettor, and it will make an astonishing difference. And the gear linkages are shot…but easy to replace! Good luck! Happy to advise where I can. Oil the trunnions!!!!

You really know about cars and your personality is delightful so really enjoyable video. My first proper car was a Triumph 1300 which I bought from my boss for 50 pounds. It had the same problem with the gear link rubber boss thingy; it's actually an easy inexpensive job. I then sold the 1300 after driving it to Paris and back from The Elephant and Castle, and bought a lovely Triumph Herald Coupe 948 cc with the twin SU carbs. Later on I got Triumph Vitesse convertible 2.0 litre. Lovely cars!

Ahhhhh, the joys of driving an unknown old car, a long way back home, on a rainy dark night! The butterflies are only explainable to those who have done it! I remember picking up a beautiful series 1 Xj6, from Northamptonshire, in the 90s, not a Herald granted, but it was sleeting, dark and the journey back to South Wales, without any external mirrors or a demister to speak of, was a long slightly anxious one! Beautiful car though Alex and she didn't miss a beat.
More recently, I spotted a lovely Renault 4 for sale in Northern Spain, which I purchased and drove back to Glamorgan, not without a few electrical issues, mainly Indicators, not good on the Motorway in such a tiny car! After some fettling she took us down through France and Spain last summer Alex, to Lanzarote and she'll be returning to Wales next week, just for a Winter break, so looking forward to the return journey!!
I'm a big P6 and Rover fan in general, admire your P4 and Mr Jenkins, and have owned a couple of P6s, a "2200 and a 3500S and will get another, one of these days, a series 1 2000 probably.Been too long....
Just love the R4 though, utterly charming and much revered in Spain, where they were also built. Everyone should try one!
I always fancied a Herald, so enjoyed that Alex, can completely relate to that clip. Look forward to hearing all about it. Paul.

That gear lver rattle was also shared by the Viva HC in ohv guise. The gear lever is serviced through a transfer tube being so far offset.
I seem to remember forty years ago the Vauxhall agent servicing it.

Hi Alex nice to see you have a Triumph, You need a new bush kit on your gearstick , maybe a new diaphram on the carb ( check it very carefully as apin hole will make it loose power) , I think also your clutch slave cylinder is leeking and the gearbox oil is low but the 13/60 Heralds are the best of the Heralds yo be able to drive on a regular basis also you may be able to advance the timing by a few degrees as super plus is higher octane the distributor has a small vernier adjustment so altering timing is easy

Nice car looking forward seeing more of it on the channel .
As they say a womans welding is never done 😉.
I grew up with a rusting herald on the drive for a few years in the late 70s early 80s .
Got towed away in the end my dad realised it might not be do able, then replaced by a hillman imp .
Re the front screen we used to use arbomast to seal them up , messy but really good stuff.
Seal rubber to glass and glass to body all the way round .

Great car, look forward to the updates. The stromberg carb is perhaps the only weakness on the engine side of things, you may find a better solution swapping it out for an SU, or perhaps twin SU's. I am just about to start swapping my Stromberg out for a 45 weber setup, not the cheapest of options but having raced these superb engines way back when, they respond really well to such mods. If you can't find one in your spares you may have got with the car, I have a spare chrome wheel embellisher ( I noticed the OSF one was missing) , in fact I have all 4 together with the wheels and hubcaps, I have many more spares too, if you need stuff.
