  • In this video I'll show whether the quick hot wire of a car and driving it off that you see in the movies either by a thief or a hero during and emergency is actually possible or not. To an unsuspecting eye it may look like all you have to do is find the two right wires, strip the ends, touch them together, start the car and off you go. But there's more to it than that, watch this video and find all there is to know about a car's starting system.

Well obviously anyone with the know how on how to actually hot wire a car like this would know that you can easily remove the plate on the bottom part of the wheel and remove the locking mechanism and pin plate to unlock the wheel and keep it from locking. but i like how he left that off the video so that he wasnt actually teaching ppl how to steal a car

Well it's a useful thing to know, you never know when you might have to steal a car in an emergency situation.
You should always have your emergency car theft kit with you, that includes an assortment of sockets, screws and jumper cables and most important is to keep your electric impact gun charged up so you can take apart the screws with ease!

As someone who's had to move cars without keys more than a few times, I know it's possible to hotwire a car quickly, though the problem comes with breaking the steering lock if you don't have access to the lock mechanism through the steering column. If you do, it's easy to start the car and drive away. I've done it both ways. Basically anything older than 96 can be vulnerable depending on the make.

@@franciscaramirez2342 Showing how to hotwire one kind of car is not going to help anyone. If you really want to learn, look up videos on replacing the ignition switch on various models, and do some self education on the ignition system wiring on older cars. Modern vehicles with key fobs and chips in the key are immune to the methods because the computer won't fire the spark plugs, but older cars are pretty easy when you actually put in the effort to learn how the car sends power and signal to the starter.

old cars were easy. if you were even halfway hefty you could just snap the steering lock straight off by truning the wheel with brute force, lighter weight guys would just force a bit of tube down over the barrel and snap it off so you could turn the switch without needing a key.
These days most thieves just break into the house and steal the car keys, it's easier.

There's also a thing called an immobiliser which is specifically designed to stop what he did in the video from working, usually by using an electronic system to wirelessly check for a specially coded chip inside the key. Depending on the make/model ect it will either wait for a set time before disabling the engine or simply not allow the engine to start if it does not see the key.

Modern cars since as far back as 2003 or earlier have immobilizers so if you happen to hot wire it, it'll crank the starter all day but no fuel will get released to injectors. A chip in the key must match the the car computer before fuel gets released to start.

That's how GM trucks up to at least '06 are being stolen. The "security" that is in those trucks is a joke, it's all built into the ignition cylinder and as long as the cylinder is turned the trucks start. I think GM had been watching to many movies before coming up with that system...
I'm not sure how they are stealing the '07+, since there's an extra layer of securty in them, but somehow they are getting around them.

I drive a 91 mazda and someone did exactly that to me just the other day. Fortunately, they failed to actually steal the car because the battery was dead. A need to learn about ignition systems in order to get it started is actually why I came here.
Anyways, point is that it will work with at least some early 90s cars as well.

I think you're searching for the term "transponder key" at the end of your video.
All modern cars have them, I think from about 1997 or something. It contains, as you said, a chip that sends a signal to the engine management computer when you turn the key. If that signal matches the one recorded in the engine management, the engine wil start. Without a matching chip, you can connect all the wires you want, but the car won't start.

I always used to think about three things regarding hot wiring cars growing up watching movies from the 80's/90's and very early 2000's:
    1) Is it actually even possible to hot wire a car in real life?
    2) And if so is it really as easy as it is in films to do it?
    3) If it is indeed possible then why don't car manufacturers put things in place to prevent it? Like you would think at the very least if you were building a car then you would make the wires inaccessible to criminals, wouldn't you?

If you knew in advance what car you were going to "hotwire" You could get the switch end of the connector from the junk yard and have it prewired with the connections that you need. Sounds like a lot of work though either way.
