You could say it is irresponsible to show this but thieves already know it. It's the general public that need to know it so they will know NEVER to leave anything valuable in a car. If the car gets stolen and you still have the key, it will be replaced by your insurers. If you've left something personal in the car, like a phone or laptop, it may be irreplaceable.
Before retiring I was a Field Service Engineer. I carried a lot of very expensive gear in my station wagon. We did not have electronic locks then, just car keys but we still had thieves. So I had large steel box made with a solid padlock and chain loop so it could be bolted down inside car. On the case I put some stickers on the box so any one looking in could read "Radiation Hazard. Nuclear Material." No one ever broke into my car & forceed open that steel box to grab my equipment. The driver @ 2:40 who lost every thing. Are we learning yet?
RobieboyS Well considering that the US has an automatic transmission dominant market not many people in the US know how to drive manual here in the US especially rookie drivers.
I have a 6 speed diesel dually. That makes it hard, but I have a hidden fuel shut off, that makes it harder. I have 7 foot chain link around my home, with motion sensors. That makes it nearly impossible. I have a half breed pit bull, and a pure 156 pound female timber wolf, running loose in the yard. That makes it deadly.
This GM manager is living in denial. You could see the embarrassment on his face, and just could not accept the fact, that GM motors is vulnerable and at risk to the hackers. Then he had to say, that all his customers were safe. What a load of rubbish.
Easy solution.... make the punishments for auto theft (or any crime) TOUGHER. You get caught stealing a car (even a first offense), you get 15 years, non-negotiable. If you get a 15 year sentence, you serve ALL 15 years !!!!
I forgot one thing. My daughter had a 2001 Pontiac. Her purse was stolen with her keys in it. She sent the vehicle identification number to GM and they sent her a pre programmed key that started her car. They NEVER asked for a copy of the registration certificate or anything. She sent the VIN and her return address and they sent her a key. If a thief was patient for a few days, they could steal ANY car. Your reporter said something about thieves willing to do anything possible to cancel security devices. Just remember, ANY time you build a better rat trap, all you do is breed smarter rats. My father always said that locks are only to keep honest people out. A dishonest one will break a window, lock or anything else necessary to get in.
The old style steering column lock takes far longer to deal with as the lock would have to be picked AND immobiliser hacked. I've owned this type for 20 years and it's never been a target of theft
Incorrect 10 seconds with a hacksaw thru the steering wheel and the steering lock is off ..this is how they get it off so quick there useless..u just got lucky for 20 years
Cyber security is always a catch up game. The bad guys are always coming up with something new and the good guys are stuck patching it up the best they can. It's important to know that no system is 100% secure, but you can add layers of security that will discourage bad guys from wanting to break into your car or computer or whatever. Just adding a simple lock on the diagnostic port can work wonders in preventing thieves from jacking your car. Parking a in a more secure area is another form of security. Being more discreet in what you are doing can help as well. There are simple steps you can take to lower your chances of being a victim of a crime.
GM: Safety and security is #1, we address it. Also GM: Left 800,000 cars unrecalled for 13 years over a known key/ignition issue that killed 124 people to save less than 57 cents per vehicle.
Thing is Car Scan Tools are not just key programmers and you also hurt smaller shops who can't afford the more expensive tools who use ebay to get those tools for legit business. As I stated in your recent video there needs to be more authentication and time required to Program a key then just clicking a button waiting 3 secs. Ford had it right in the early 2000s where it tool 15 minutes to get into the Key Programming procedure for Passkey II then another 15 to program the key. Theives don't want to wait that long for software to steal your vehicle.
If you drive an expensive car, just some very simple steps can slow a thief down. A steering wheel lock device, a disabler switch, but, it's still not impossible, they can use a tow truck.
The benefits of driving a 1996 Chevy truck/ 2005 Impala. Old school locks, no wireless BS or connection to the internet. A regular "key" unlocks the doors and turns on the ignition. Besides, not many thieves would be interested in a 2 tone '96 Chevy truck. If they did steal it, odds are they wouldn't know how to drive a 5 speed manual transmission.
+IIGrayfoxII Of-course the GM guy is going to say his cars are safe he's a sales man and thats what sales people say. But to save yourself some stress read Matthew 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
X is the total cost of settlements. A is the cost of settlement B is the severity on a scale of 1 to 10. (a failure of brakes would get a 8, failure of the Air con would get a 1.) C is the number of vehicles with the fault. If X is greater than the cost of a recall then you do a recall.
I've seen people do it with pre programmed ECU's but they can only go after that model of car. They hook it up thru the engine, sometimes from outside the car, and turn off the security for the vehicle and hotwire or other ways. I'm a mechanic and I still dont know how tf they do it.
Simple solution is to use infrared to start the car. Just put key in the ignition to start it. No key mean no key copy. Nfc or infrared has very short wireless range so I am hoping that it will be harder to unlock
So basically if you are that worried about your car driving off is install a breakout relay to injectors coils or fuel pump and the hidden switch to activate the relay. And for the remote unlock well that is a hard pill to swallow, disable the unlock signal to the door and trunk locks including the open sunroof feature, on this a separate remote to press to allow the completion of the car unlock remote to work. What chance of the thieves to know about this feature unless they read this here, and then again they would have to spend more time or may not have the signal to transmit.
I have had a car stolen from me once now I have a very easy way to prevent my car from being stolen.. I have a hidden toggle switch tucked away that when i am not using it i flip the switch. this in return kills power to the fuel pump relay. even if you can break into my car good luck going anywhere if it doesn't run.
+Rustic Shine A bloke in London did a variation on this. He put a time-delay-relay in the feed to the fuel pump. Unless the relay was bypassed by the secret switch, the car would only go for about a hundred yards. The hope was that the thief would be left stranded and that the police would say "Is this your car Sir?" Ah those were the days! The real bummer of course is that in the UK car theft is usually just classed as TWOC (Taking without owners consent) Its just viewed as borrowing the car without being polite enough to ask! Watch out for thieves borrowing your registration number and getting a free tank of petrol. Yobs in Plymouth did this to a cop!
There are wireless switches too. Almost had my car stolen and so bought the switch to carry in my pocket if I ever get out of the car while it's running. If someone takes the car I can still shut off the gas remotely.
> genius plan and it's also anti-NSA but u already have fly-by-wire post-2004 so ur pretty fuct. toggle switch would have saved Rolling Stone reporter Michael Hastings and film star from Fast & Furious franchise... RIP

What's even better than a fuel pump cut-off switch is an ignition cut-off switch.
I don't know the police get awful testy about that then you get the feds involved nice idea though. LoJack had a system that would on command lock the doors horn starts going off and the lights start flashing! The theft is trap inside until the police get there. for around $40 you can put a tracking device in any car won't stop them from stealing it but makes it easier to recover it.
What are you talking about? Do you understand how the locking mechanism works? Locked by Key or Fob, it doesn't matter, they physically lock the car the same way. So, it will make no difference to a car theif how you locked your vehicle.
There are other ways to defeat the thieves and totally frustrate their efforts to steal cars by these methods. At worst, it will force them to have to work much harder and longer at figuring out what is keeping them from reprogramming your car and getting it to start. That GM cybersecurity exec should have been fired for letting something so weak get by to production. ALL the auto makers are in on the scam.
Yes I know this is an old post. There are some issues here. Auto makers are not going to want their cars to be stolen because insurance rates go up will make it more difficult for people to buy cars. And, if the cars were 100 % secure and did not allow for reprogramming, you would be complaining that you have to junk your car because you lost your keys.
@@bobroberts2371 As a security Engineer, I know better than that! There are great security technologies that can be implemented that allow for only legitimate owners to gain access if keys are lost, and to frustrate thieves...or at least, the middle of the road types. They high end ones are harder to foil.
tjeulink yeah but it's way harder to walk around with a machine that has to make a copy of a key / 3d scan the lock, or have a lockpick for cars. Well i guess. This could seem to be way too easy, way too fast.
Crispy K you dont need that. i had a friend who copied keys purely by sight. he saw the master key for our aparment complex and simply made his own from a piece of metal and a file in 15 min. car keys are not that difficult.
tjeulink true but still requires more skill than just pressing a button ;) We know that if they want to get acces they will get it, now why make it easy? why not go back the the old annoying and time consuming and skill requiring way. Probably because it's not really that big of a deal or just because that's just what someone decided.
I can think of a method just off the top of my head to fix the fob capture method. When you press the button the fob sends a request. Car then sends back a time code. Fob then sends back a code generated from a private key and the time code. You'd need slightly more expensive fob but that's it. Such difficult much expensive wow. If they really cared about security they would have done something like this a decade ago. They just don't care.
steering wheel lock is useless too. they can cut out a portion to remove the lock. best locks are the brake peddle locks. they can't drive if they can't stop.
This is why all newer cars use a "one time" use code. Using computer technology. Only older cars use a continuous unchanging code. Which is the substance of this clip.
The one time code is also vulnerable. There was a defcon talk on hacking roling codes. Capture and jam a code. The owner see the car didn't lock and just presses again on the key. Now the hacker has 2 codes that the car didn't see. Uses one to make the owner think he locked his car and the other to unlock it.
You end it by putting on your hand held key entry, a finger print reader.. so it takes a finger print along with the electronics to open it.. a two step system.. You can also use a two step process to enter the vehicle by having both the key entry button and a keyless digital number pad.. so only those who know the keyless number pad combination along with the key entry can enter into the car..
It will also ask you 3 security questions, like what town were you born in, what's your favorite movie, you favorite color and then show one of those set of capta pictures and ask you to pick which pictures have trains in them.
That is BS that anyone buying a key programmer on Ebay would "more than likely not be legitimate". I lost my key for my car and they wanted $300 to program the car and another $150 for a new key and it's a 2000, not something very new. I could buy a new key, 2 fobs, ignition and programmer for about $175 - and closer to half that if you buy the key software and a programming kit seperate.
To help fix this problem is that cars need to use not only electronic lock but also the physical high security keys to enter on another way also is designing (not mentioned as in research this minute) lock unlock devises where needs narrow more accurate position codes not only at the door locks but also at start up. this can be done as this would then be a three way security. harder to bust with infinite codes.
This is why electronic keys and push button start is a bad thing. If you needed to have a physical key to turn on the car and start it, you wouldn't have this problem or it would take them much longer to get the into the car and to start it.
HACK RF ONE would be the device used to steal these modern day cars. I work for an insurance company and often have to take back cars, when the finance deal stops, and/or the customer stops paying for it. With the HackRF One, once I locate the car, I can be in and driving away within 60 seconds, and 40 of those seconds is tracing the radio frequency. Once you have the correct RF, you simply open the door and start the car with the electronic start, just as if it was your own car.
Let's be serious, Car companies don't want to stop Car theft, they get to sell another Car every time one is stolen. Why would they want to stop that ? Maybe the Insurance Companies care but not the Manufacture.
When you know that there is a brand car which is easily to steel, would you buy it? Car companies must think of consequences of high rate steeling which will definitely cause low rate of selling.
Proximity vehicles are being stolen using the relay method. Key programming tools take time to program a key. Relays utilize the original key to start the vehicle in less than a minute. Investigators need to do their homework!!
The response from GM is terrible. The video they showed him, the guy in it - it has nearly been a year since he went public with his device. And the chief of cybersecurity at GM acts like he's never heard of it?
+Moka hless "And the chief of cybersecurity at GM acts like he's never heard of it?" I can believe that. When you are in a specific industry you are insulated somewhat as most people are. You don't know everything, and only know if you actively seek the information, and even then you may not come across it. The right information isn't as ubiquitous as it may seem. There is a lot of noise out there, and depending on your search query, or your usual habits, it can lead you away from something specific. Now with that said... merely stating that it's possible. That may not be the case in this situation. There could be any number of reasons why they may lie about not knowing about it. Primarily liability concerns. As well as trying to stay one step ahead of the attacks.
I have a Jeep Liberty, that can be locked by pressing the door lock button before closing the door and without using the FOB. However with my 2014 Chevy Equinox LTZ, this is not an option. The only way to lock it is with the FOB or remotely through the OnStar App, if the interior door lock button is pressed with the door open it will lock and then unlock before one can close the door. Doors will only remained locked after the interior lock button is pressed if the lock button is pressed when the door is closed (someone in the car). You should have tried to get the GM cyber security guy to talk about the other possibilities that exist once your car has been hack, for those possibilities are far more serious than the thief of ones car or contents.
This has actually happened to my dad. Thankfully it was just a wallet that had $20 and his drivers license. Don't make the same mistake as him, buy a security camera.
+AE86 of Mt. Akina From the episode, looks like security cameras do nothing more than record the event as proof. Really, hard to use since it's hard to recognize what the hacking item is, and who did it.
security camera wont work if they see that the car have one and stole the module. you can not make the same mistakes by *"not putting your wallet in your car".*
Cops in Windsor, Ontario sadly won't do anything about breaking into cars unless the car is actually stolen. I have had the last break in on camera and nope... THAT is what insurance is for. Nice to know! So .. umm.. what are the cops for? Oh for speeders and for uh ... knife and gun fights and uh .. uh .. drug overdoses? Oh wait no that is ambulances for that last one.
4:59 - I think I'm seeing an Arduino Pro Mini board and a GPRS/GSM board. I don't know anything about car systems, but micro-controllers and people who can program them like this aren't exactly uncommon.
GMC=Generaly Messy Construction? I used to work at the Chevrolet Warren plant. I bought a 1981 Cadillac Seville as I liked the look. Worst car ever. Armrest on passenger side, which was seldom used, fell off at 49,000 miles. Found out it was held on with screws going throuh metal clips on thin cardboard. Road vibrartion probably did it. Beauty is only paint deep.
They may use the door button to lock it but they have to use their file to unlock it unless they're is a key port on the door which mini manufacturers have deleted in manufacturing.
Even without watching this video, ladies and gents these onset of thieves is partly the manufacturer of cars to blame for in making your vehicles so easy to be hacked. The main culprit is those fancy keyless FOBs and waves of new generation of vehicles using all those wireless tech. Great for starting your car at a distance and getting ready for you, but horrendous at comprising security.
more computer stuff to hack..... they can solve this problem simple... STOP making them.. start making cars that take standard key's to get in. fingerprint.. lol I watch the lock picking lawyer on youtube bypass them with.... A WET FINGER. brilliant security system....
Should return to turn key only ignition with key fob as a security back up,needing both to start, without both cars should go on lock out needing mfg new code to unlock before cars can be restarted.
My new vehicle has these wondrous devices on them. BUT before I b ought the car, I bought the dealers service manual. Once delivered, I located wires critical for the operation of the electronic locks. I inserted RFID controlled switches in the critical wires. This means the car is double locked and is also non-standard. Safe.
Car manufactures need to make a safety code. Just like a password for your email things like computers in cars need to be HIGHLY protected. Why aren't they creating code to protect people's cars? By far your car is more important than someone hacking your email so there should be much more protection!
Car manufacturers DO USE A SAFETY CODE! Its when the high tech steals it the moment you push the FOB Button that transmit the code and the thieves steal it...DUH. ANYTHING DESIGNED BY MAN, CAN BE COMPROMISED/UNDONE BY MAN, JUST LIKE THEY CAN HACK YOUR PHONE, COMPUTER, ALARM SYSTEM ETC.
No not no locksmith if you get a key from a car you grind down the sides a bit and there i can open the car you don't need no locksmith...i use to steal cars like that...😂😂

If you eliminate your keyless entry I know I know who would ever do that how about a guy that's dealt with this before and knows how this works your keyless entry does not work they cannot get in the car, in some Vehicles it's a simple as switching the Factory radio to an aftermarket radio and other vehicles you can simply disable from the dealership this doesn't affect your car alarm it just means you can't push a button to unlock your doors use your key just like how your parents and grandparents did you may also think a high-tech security system will protect you but it's still a wireless remote and the signal is able to be stolen hope this helps you
I always like to see when a company is willing to speak to the media after a negative report or investigation; they know you aren't coming to share your new oatmeal cookie recipe and we see people also kicking the reports out or flat out refusing or giving blanket statements. I love seeing a company consider they may be wrong or a Conservative politician go on a Liberal's talk show.

Add a second switch to a key on circuit to sound the horn. Even better install something louder than a horn to that circuit. If you have the money, time, knowledge go bigger with a second lock that will lock them in the car. This would be a fun bait car.
In Sweden, we etch the car's registration number on all glass panes which makes the car unattractive to steal and that it becomes more difficult for thieves to sell the car abroad, costs 15 dollars.
I got a device that works a lot better than that and you can use it multiple times for multiple different ways it's called a Glock 380 and it doesn't discriminate when it comes to thievery and criminals
If someone found driving stolen car need to be compensated if he truly does not know that the car was stolen by the manufacturer so that they can work hard to make sure cars are not so easily stolen.

Cars are designed to be easy to steal. Most stolen cars result in the purchase of a new car.

Easy solution.... make the punishments for auto theft (or any crime) TOUGHER. You get caught stealing a car (even a first offense), you get 15 years, non-negotiable. If you get a 15 year sentence, you serve ALL 15 years !!!!
I get nervous anytime researchers show anything. 'There's your answer on why car security is so inefficient'.
With all the “security features” my car has, if it were stolen, I am immediately calling the car maker not my insurance.
Lol if only it worked like that.
You're not calling the police, first?

This has happened to me. With those who are bold/brave enough plus the new technology of today, it's becoming more dangerous everyday.

You can also remove the ignition relay when your car is parked to prevent a thief from stealing your car.
GM says customer safety is important to them.
So that ignition fault that resulted in the deaths of a lot of people means nothing?
+IIGrayfoxII Of-course the GM guy is going to say his cars are safe he's a sales man and thats what sales people say. But to save yourself some stress read Matthew 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
Yes haven't you seen fight club? AxBxC=X ..... But what does X mean??
X is the total cost of settlements.
A is the cost of settlement
B is the severity on a scale of 1 to 10. (a failure of brakes would get a 8, failure of the Air con would get a 1.)
C is the number of vehicles with the fault.
If X is greater than the cost of a recall then you do a recall.
that's not how it works.
Most likely.. But that is what they say / insinuate in Fight Club, which is what I was talking about. Sorry I forgot to mention that.
"thief shot in the back with a '22 long rifle - should live but doubtful he'll walk again"
Now Now Now, we're forgetting to drop our dirty piece aren't we. Otherwise we'd ourselves end up in prison taking shots to the back lol
Shoot them in the chest
use a .45 more effective
Genius plan
If someone takes the car I can still shut off the gas remotely.
> genius plan
and it's also anti-NSA but u already have fly-by-wire post-2004 so ur pretty fuct.
toggle switch would have saved Rolling Stone reporter Michael Hastings and film star from Fast & Furious franchise... RIP
What's even better than a fuel pump cut-off switch is an ignition cut-off switch.

You can wire horn to starter and have a hidden switch. Maybe scare them away after horn honks.
Best way to avoid this scenario, when leaving the car, lock it mechanically. Use the zapper to unlock when you return. By then it's a moot point.
when you lock and unlock your car do it without the fob use your key if you can, especially if you have valuables in the vehicle
What are you talking about? Do you understand how the locking mechanism works? Locked by Key or Fob, it doesn't matter, they physically lock the car the same way. So, it will make no difference to a car theif how you locked your vehicle.
8:12. Why blur a building? That just calls attention to it: “Legacy’s Auto Center” Most likely near Oakville, Ontario, Canada.
Well yeah, of course the industry is complacent if you loose your car you need to get a new one.
They high end ones are harder to foil.
i'm just wondering, is it really that hard to insert the key and turn to unlock? do you really need a remote? lol

yeah but it's way harder to walk around with a machine that has to make a copy of a key / 3d scan the lock, or have a lockpick for cars. Well i guess. This could seem to be way too easy, way too fast.
Crispy K you dont need that. i had a friend who copied keys purely by sight. he saw the master key for our aparment complex and simply made his own from a piece of metal and a file in 15 min. car keys are not that difficult.

but still requires more skill than just pressing a button ;)
We know that if they want to get acces they will get it, now why make it easy? why not go back the the old annoying and time consuming and skill requiring way.
They just don't care.

omg you are a legend
When the officer denied to show her the device it's just like mommy saying yes but daddy saying no
"Ebay removed listings and investigated more" And currently in ebay: "key programmer 1,001 listings" LOLXD
I want to know exactly how you contacted eBay, there is no direct number, there is no easy way you just keep going round in circles on their website.
They have a contact option for press and you can call customer service if you are a seller.
ebay does sell lockpicks and locksmith tools..lots of them

I hit my power lock in car when I get out. It also sets my alarm. Then, remote keyless to unlock and drive away.

And they will still use this to steal it.
+Moka hless "And the chief of cybersecurity at GM acts like he's never heard of it?"
I can believe that.
Removing the engine will stop the thefts.
Impossible for him not to have known about this as it's not new concept and has audio tuners have been used at least since 2005.
