Two ways to keep thief's from getting into your car and stealing it. 1: Lock the doors manually, it does not transmit a signal. 2: Buy a car with a stick shift!

@Clinton Shaun Why are you posting this here and secondly you just doxxed your hacker. You obviously are just incredibly ignorant but please do not do this again. Unlikely this will lead to something but the wrong person may see it and go after him. If you really like him just ask for a dm or something instead of openly advertising them.
Way back in the 70's, before hi tech, my buddy had a very desirable classic that he wanted to protect. He had the rear number plate on hinges such that it could drop down. Before attempting to start the car he would hit a secret button that de-armed the system. If not pressed the car would start normally but the engine would cut out after a few minutes leaving the thief stranded. All this time the rear licence plate had dropped down to reveal a "this car has been stolen" notice.. sometimes lo tech is better
Good ol switch on the fuel pump.

Absolutely, the guy watched video and just saying it is not many out there... he 's gonna wait until there gonna be a lot of devices like this to start doing something?

She showed him how easy it was to open their car and he goes:" the safety and security of our customers is our highest priority."
Yeah right. Sales are your highest priority!
Easy fix, program a second command on the same key (the panic button), so you would need to disarm the panic first then unlock the doors. That way when the thief tries to unlock the car the "panic" goes off. Personally I have an alarm system that is separate from the cars security own, so even if they get to unlock, the alarm will go off the moment it is unlocked without disarming the system first.
@AVB2 have a manual hood lock good luck
You could say it is irresponsible to show this but thieves already know it. It's the general public that need to know it so they will know NEVER to leave anything valuable in a car. If the car gets stolen and you still have the key, it will be replaced by your insurers. If you've left something personal in the car, like a phone or laptop, it may be irreplaceable.
thieves or druggies or junkies?
usually when people break into my car they are not technicians
Pro tip: If you don't want a thief to drive away with your car in the US just buy a manual XD
i can drive standard and manual, now what
But you can't steal cars. Problem solved.

Get A GEO METRO Or A YUGO!!
Its a good Joke ( special in" Muerica") just serious so guess all professional Car Thieves can drive anything inclusive tracked and Hovercraft....
A physical key will always be better than electronic locks. If your car can be locked, unlocked and started via a smartphone app then... you are a sucker. Your vehicle will get stolen very easily.
exactly
unless there is some kind of 3d ultra scanner which can make replicate of the same key
Keys can be duplicated very easy even without the original key. The safest lock is your own custom lock.
honeybun33 i am not saying custom locks just encrypt the data so no hacker cant create a copy
***** true but you need to use common sense as well why is there a random guy opening my car? if you see a guy walking arround the car and he has a device in his hand why did they did not scream or something to scare the person from stealing it or run and chase him and get the your stuff back.
This is called a replay attack. Car alarm system should use a frequency-hopping spread spectrum system or one with a rolling code..
This GM manager is living in denial. You could see the embarrassment on his face, and just could not accept the fact, that GM motors is vulnerable and at risk to the hackers. Then he had to say, that all his customers were safe. What a load of rubbish.
Before retiring I was a Field Service Engineer. I carried a lot of very expensive gear in my station wagon. We did not have electronic locks then, just car keys but we still had thieves. So I had large steel box made with a solid padlock and chain loop so it could be bolted down inside car. On the case I put some stickers on the box so any one looking in could read "Radiation Hazard. Nuclear Material." No one ever broke into my car & forceed open that steel box to grab my equipment. The driver @ 2:40 who lost every thing. Are we learning yet?

I have a 6 speed diesel dually. That makes it hard, but I have a hidden fuel shut off, that makes it harder. I have 7 foot chain link around my home, with motion sensors. That makes it nearly impossible. I have a half breed pit bull, and a pure 156 pound female timber wolf, running loose in the yard. That makes it deadly.

i was looking at stuff like that. i was thinking about an my own air bag with bolts and nuts that explode in a criminals face...
James Bond car, lol
You can wire horn to starter and have a hidden switch. Maybe scare them away after horn honks.
I don't know the police get awful testy about that then you get the feds involved nice idea though. LoJack had a system that would on command lock the doors horn starts going off and the lights start flashing! The theft is trap inside until the police get there. for around $40 you can put a tracking device in any car won't stop them from stealing it but makes it easier to recover it.
There are other ways to defeat the thieves and totally frustrate their efforts to steal cars by these methods. At worst, it will force them to have to work much harder and longer at figuring out what is keeping them from reprogramming your car and getting it to start. That GM cybersecurity exec should have been fired for letting something so weak get by to production. ALL the auto makers are in on the scam.
Well yeah, of course the industry is complacent if you loose your car you need to get a new one.
Yes I know this is an old post. There are some issues here. Auto makers are not going to want their cars to be stolen because insurance rates go up will make it more difficult for people to buy cars. And, if the cars were 100 % secure and did not allow for reprogramming, you would be complaining that you have to junk your car because you lost your keys.
@@bobroberts2371 As a security Engineer, I know better than that! There are great security technologies that can be implemented that allow for only legitimate owners to gain access if keys are lost, and to frustrate thieves...or at least, the middle of the road types. They high end ones are harder to foil.
Cars are designed to be easy to steal. Most stolen cars result in the purchase of a new car.
Genius! Never thought about that

Cyber security is always a catch up game. The bad guys are always coming up with something new and the good guys are stuck patching it up the best they can.
It's important to know that no system is 100% secure, but you can add layers of security that will discourage bad guys from wanting to break into your car or computer or whatever. Just adding a simple lock on the diagnostic port can work wonders in preventing thieves from jacking your car.
Parking a in a more secure area is another form of security. Being more discreet in what you are doing can help as well. There are simple steps you can take to lower your chances of being a victim of a crime.
When the officer denied to show her the device it's just like mommy saying yes but daddy saying no
Great show! Thank you for all of your investigations.
Cops in Windsor, Ontario sadly won't do anything about breaking into cars unless the car is actually stolen. I have had the last break in on camera and nope... THAT is what insurance is for. Nice to know! So .. umm.. what are the cops for? Oh for speeders and for uh ... knife and gun fights and uh .. uh .. drug overdoses? Oh wait no that is ambulances for that last one.
I actually needed this, my car key broke and Honda is charging me too much for a new one, do thank you news source this actually helped me

Easy solution.... make the punishments for auto theft (or any crime) TOUGHER. You get caught stealing a car (even a first offense), you get 15 years, non-negotiable. If you get a 15 year sentence, you serve ALL 15 years !!!!

Best way to avoid this scenario, when leaving the car, lock it mechanically. Use the zapper to unlock when you return. By then it's a moot point.
I forgot one thing. My daughter had a 2001 Pontiac. Her purse was stolen with her keys in it. She sent the vehicle identification number to GM and they sent her a pre programmed key that started her car. They NEVER asked for a copy of the registration certificate or anything. She sent the VIN and her return address and they sent her a key. If a thief was patient for a few days, they could steal ANY car.
Your reporter said something about thieves willing to do anything possible to cancel security devices. Just remember, ANY time you build a better rat trap, all you do is breed smarter rats. My father always said that locks are only to keep honest people out. A dishonest one will break a window, lock or anything else necessary to get in.
You can also remove the ignition relay when your car is parked to prevent a thief from stealing your car.
I have had a car stolen from me once now I have a very easy way to prevent my car from being stolen.. I have a hidden toggle switch tucked away that when i am not using it i flip the switch. this in return kills power to the fuel pump relay. even if you can break into my car good luck going anywhere if it doesn't run.
Genius plan
+Rustic Shine A bloke in London did a variation on this. He put a time-delay-relay in the feed to the fuel pump. Unless the relay was bypassed by the secret switch, the car would only go for about a hundred yards. The hope was that the thief would be left stranded and that the police would say "Is this your car Sir?" Ah those were the days!
The real bummer of course is that in the UK car theft is usually just classed as TWOC (Taking without owners consent) Its just viewed as borrowing the car without being polite enough to ask!
Watch out for thieves borrowing your registration number and getting a free tank of petrol. Yobs in Plymouth did this to a cop!
There are wireless switches too. Almost had my car stolen and so bought the switch to carry in my pocket if I ever get out of the car while it's running. If someone takes the car I can still shut off the gas remotely.
> genius plan
and it's also anti-NSA but u already have fly-by-wire post-2004 so ur pretty fuct.
toggle switch would have saved Rolling Stone reporter Michael Hastings and film star from Fast & Furious franchise... RIP
What's even better than a fuel pump cut-off switch is an ignition cut-off switch.
I always like to see when a company is willing to speak to the media after a negative report or investigation; they know you aren't coming to share your new oatmeal cookie recipe and we see people also kicking the reports out or flat out refusing or giving blanket statements. I love seeing a company consider they may be wrong or a Conservative politician go on a Liberal's talk show.
Our customers security is a top priority blabla. No, money is a top priority for them lol
Indeed Henrik www.cbc.ca/fifth/episodes/2014-2015/gm-recall-the-switch-from-hell, www.nytimes.com/2016/08/27/business/takata-airbag-recall-crisis.html,
I'm wondering what range of distance do they need to be in to get the frequency.
the fact that you can program a new key on the fly is ridiculous, but disabling/locking the programming port is definitely a good idea.
GM says customer safety is important to them.
So that ignition fault that resulted in the deaths of a lot of people means nothing?
+IIGrayfoxII Of-course the GM guy is going to say his cars are safe he's a sales man and thats what sales people say. But to save yourself some stress read Matthew 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
Yes haven't you seen fight club? AxBxC=X ..... But what does X mean??
X is the total cost of settlements.
A is the cost of settlement
B is the severity on a scale of 1 to 10. (a failure of brakes would get a 8, failure of the Air con would get a 1.)
C is the number of vehicles with the fault.
If X is greater than the cost of a recall then you do a recall.
that's not how it works.
Most likely.. But that is what they say / insinuate in Fight Club, which is what I was talking about. Sorry I forgot to mention that.
i'm just wondering, is it really that hard to insert the key and turn to unlock? do you really need a remote? lol
Yes if the car company wants to charge you $500 for an electronic key in the future
keys can be hacked too
tjeulink
yeah but it's way harder to walk around with a machine that has to make a copy of a key / 3d scan the lock, or have a lockpick for cars. Well i guess. This could seem to be way too easy, way too fast.
Crispy K you dont need that. i had a friend who copied keys purely by sight. he saw the master key for our aparment complex and simply made his own from a piece of metal and a file in 15 min. car keys are not that difficult.

but still requires more skill than just pressing a button ;)
We know that if they want to get acces they will get it, now why make it easy? why not go back the the old annoying and time consuming and skill requiring way. Probably because it's not really that big of a deal or just because that's just what someone decided.
I tried manually locking my car door, but the key fob still opens it. How is that supposed to help? My car is a 2011; maybe it works with newer cars?
Funny how the GM cyber security employee says people cars are safe when they clearly are not...

The benefits of driving a 1996 Chevy truck/ 2005 Impala. Old school locks, no wireless BS or connection to the internet. A regular "key" unlocks the doors and turns on the ignition. Besides, not many thieves would be interested in a 2 tone '96 Chevy truck. If they did steal it, odds are they wouldn't know how to drive a 5 speed manual transmission.

steering wheel lock is useless too. they can cut out a portion to remove the lock. best locks are the brake peddle locks. they can't drive if they can't stop.

Muhammad Abdulrehman Hmu. I have pretty much everything .
Let's be serious, Car companies don't want to stop Car theft, they get to sell another Car every time one is stolen. Why would they want to stop that ? Maybe the Insurance Companies care but not the Manufacture.
When you know that there is a brand car which is easily to steel, would you buy it?
Car companies must think of consequences of high rate steeling which will definitely cause low rate of selling.
Thing is Car Scan Tools are not just key programmers and you also hurt smaller shops who can't afford the more expensive tools who use ebay to get those tools for legit business. As I stated in your recent video there needs to be more authentication and time required to Program a key then just clicking a button waiting 3 secs. Ford had it right in the early 2000s where it tool 15 minutes to get into the Key Programming procedure for Passkey II then another 15 to program the key. Theives don't want to wait that long for software to steal your vehicle.
They should do a remake of Gone in 60 seconds movie with these high tech gadgets...call it “Gone in less than 60 seconds”

If you drive an expensive car, just some very simple steps can slow a thief down. A steering wheel lock device, a disabler switch, but, it's still not impossible, they can use a tow truck.
How about a simple manual fuel cut off switch?
Until you forget to turn the switch on and your car runs out of gas on a rr track.

You can just wait for someone to lock their car and record the radio frequency and code then wait for the person to leave and replay the recorded code and your in. Although that only works on older car as modern Oners have a self changing code so only works once. You need some gadgetry to do this though. But much older cars that were the first to use the remotes some apparently would work with something as basic as a tape record er
Now actually I'm seeing this after six years this is awesome.......❣️
I can think of a method just off the top of my head to fix the fob capture method.
When you press the button the fob sends a request.
Car then sends back a time code.
Fob then sends back a code generated from a private key and the time code.
You'd need slightly more expensive fob but that's it.
Such difficult much expensive wow.
If they really cared about security they would have done something like this a decade ago. They just don't care.
+Jack Evans its almost the same as putting an encrypted code on a computer no?
needs more thumbs up, that's actually a smart idea
Even without watching this video, ladies and gents these onset of thieves is partly the manufacturer of cars to blame for in making your vehicles so easy to be hacked. The main culprit is those fancy keyless FOBs and waves of new generation of vehicles using all those wireless tech. Great for starting your car at a distance and getting ready for you, but horrendous at comprising security.
That is BS that anyone buying a key programmer on Ebay would "more than likely not be legitimate". I lost my key for my car and they wanted $300 to program the car and another $150 for a new key and it's a 2000, not something very new. I could buy a new key, 2 fobs, ignition and programmer for about $175 - and closer to half that if you buy the key software and a programming kit seperate.
could you imagine parking your car in a garage and walking by this being filmed? lol
The guy in 10:11 looks and sounds like jesse from breaking bad XD
really not
I got a device that works a lot better than that and you can use it multiple times for multiple different ways it's called a Glock 380 and it doesn't discriminate when it comes to thievery and criminals
Are you for real?
Who will you shoot when you're car is already gone?
What he should say @ 14:15 is "Yes, your right, and we're screwed so return your cars til we figure it out" lol lol
This is why all newer cars use a "one time" use code. Using computer technology. Only older cars use a continuous unchanging code. Which is the substance of this clip.
The one time code is also vulnerable. There was a defcon talk on hacking roling codes. Capture and jam a code. The owner see the car didn't lock and just presses again on the key. Now the hacker has 2 codes that the car didn't see. Uses one to make the owner think he locked his car and the other to unlock it.
GMC=Generaly Messy Construction? I used to work at the Chevrolet Warren plant. I bought a 1981 Cadillac Seville as I liked the look. Worst car ever. Armrest on passenger side, which was seldom used, fell off at 49,000 miles. Found out it was held on with screws going throuh metal clips on thin cardboard. Road vibrartion probably did it. +Moka hless "And the chief of cybersecurity at GM acts like he's never heard of it?"
I can believe that. When you are in a specific industry you are insulated somewhat as most people are. You don't know everything, and only know if you actively seek the information, and even then you may not come across it. The right information isn't as ubiquitous as it may seem. There is a lot of noise out there, and depending on your search query, or your usual habits, it can lead you away from something specific.
Now with that said... merely stating that it's possible. That may not be the case in this situation. There could be any number of reasons why they may lie about not knowing about it. Primarily liability concerns. As well as trying to stay one step ahead of the attacks.

I hit my power lock in car when I get out. It also sets my alarm. Then, remote keyless to unlock and drive away.
Tx you
And they will still use this to steal it.
These videos are going to get me on a watchlist
Okay lock for steering wheel, lock for diagnostic port, car alarm, yeeah no... those will not stop the thieves in my area. THey smash windows and bend back door frames. Even on camera they are not stopped. I have SEEN it happen sadly. That is probably why they keep doing it without any regard.
I already found several on the web, cheap, 167.00 with free shipping. I ordered one for my own use, cheaper than paying a locksmith to do it.
Or in my case just use as a flat head screw driver :) Peace
This has actually happened to my dad. Thankfully it was just a wallet that had $20 and his drivers license. Don't make the same mistake as him, buy a security camera.
+AE86 of Mt. Akina From the episode, looks like security cameras do nothing more than record the event as proof. Really, hard to use since it's hard to recognize what the hacking item is, and who did it.
Michael Lee True. Still, it's good to have footage of what happened just in case.
security camera wont work if they see that the car have one and stole the module. you can not make the same mistakes by *"not putting your wallet in your car".*
***** Yeah, he stopped keeping his wallet in his car.
If u use the actual key in the door they don't get the code and your immobilizer will still work if your keys chip isn't present and the car won't start
Would like get interviewed to discuss how the Government have been training for years.
They can solve this problem with a fingerprint start and sensors on 2 doors of the vehicle.
Until they figure out how to get past that too lol.
What if the owner loses his finger or dies or is sick in hospital and his family needs to use his car?
@@reckz420 Thats what smashing the window is 4 😐
Strike Syko you would set off the alarm.
more computer stuff to hack..... they can solve this problem simple... STOP making them.. start making cars that take standard key's to get in.
fingerprint.. lol I watch the lock picking lawyer on youtube bypass them with.... A WET FINGER. brilliant security system....
Car manufactures need to make a safety code. Just like a password for your email things like computers in cars need to be HIGHLY protected. Why aren't they creating code to protect people's cars? By far your car is more important than someone hacking your email so there should be much more protection!
Car manufacturers DO USE A SAFETY CODE! Its when the high tech steals it the moment you push the FOB Button that transmit the code and the thieves steal it...DUH. ANYTHING DESIGNED BY MAN, CAN BE COMPROMISED/UNDONE BY MAN, JUST LIKE THEY CAN HACK YOUR PHONE, COMPUTER, ALARM SYSTEM ETC.
Audi and VW have long known about this vulnerability in their vehicles but haven’t come up with a fix. There was an article about their lack of attention in a 2014 issue of Wired. Not only can a hacker unlock the car he can start the engine and drive off with vehicle.
Think I might find the wiring harness of the ODB2 connector and find the data lines and install a hidden switch to disable it.
