Bjorn Borg was steel, absolute steel. He was stone cold before Stone Cold. You could feel his resolve through the TV screen. I never once saw him show indecision. He was incredibly poised, stoic, always respected the game, a quiet assassin. There was not one single frivolity in his game. He was a champion's champion.

Yep, great post. He is the reason I started playing tennis (reaching university level). I met him when he opened his clothing range in Selfridges in the mid-2000s, and got him to sign the poster I had had of him since 1980. He was so down-to-earth and polite

The fact that Borg could consistently generate so much topspin with a heavy wooden racquet is incredible. People take the technology we have today for granted.

When they can't even understand pros and cons of using smaller racquet frames like Federer and Sampras compared to their rivals, there's nothing to expect from Tennis fans these days majority of whom behave as if Tennis revolves around only 3 players and GOAT status.

    • @ElTamauro
      @ElTamauro 3 роки тому +16

back then it was not just the rackets to be so different and less forgiving than now, but there was tennis on clay, tennis indoor and tennis on grass... and they were almost 3 different sports, very very few genius like Borg and McEnroe were able to master all the surfaces. They wanted to change the game to make it more similar in all tournaments (balls pressure) and that along with the evolution of rackets brought us to modern tennis where it is all about muscular power and there is no room anymore for genius and uniqueness. I remember the beauty of watching players with unique style like Mecir, Laconte, Noah, McEnroe, Connors, Forget, Agassi.... Unless they change something in terms of rules Federer is and will be the last genius.

    • @martydav9475

@@ElTamauro Great post, I saw those players too and I would add Nastase's name as someone who also played beautiful tennis.I agree about Leconte (brilliant volleyer), Noah (great attacking all-court game) and Mecir, the graceful " big cat". McEnroe was a genius between '79-'84 until he shoved a ton of coke up his nose and, as Jimmy Connors put it "went nuts". The only player with as much natural talent as McEnroe had that I've seen is Federer.

Borg's achievement of winning on super fast Wimbledon and super slow Roland Garros, by completely changing his style of play just a few weeks between them, it's unmatchable and one of the greatest feats ever in any sport. He did it 3 times, and won 6 Roland Garros and 5 Wimbledon in total. Unbelievable.
That and Agassi's win in Wimbledon by playing in the baseline only would be the pinnacle of the sport.

Bjorn and Roger, my two favorite players of all time.
I remember seeing Bjorn play at the Longwood Country Club in Boston (Chestnut Hill) in the mid 70s. I think it was called the US Pro Championships, on clay. My tennis buddies and I didn't have tickets so we hopped the fence and got caught by a security guard. This guard was so cool, and he could tell we were huge Borg fans with our long flowing Borg locks, so he let us go in. We ended up sitting on these bleacher seats right behind Bjorn , and it was amazing, and I'll never forget. No one was cooler than Bjorn Borg.

2:31. That match is on UA-cam. I couldn´t believe Borg receiving 2 penalty points. Bjorn just stayed at the side of the umpire, he didn´t say anything for a long time. The umpire said it was game delay. The most incredible thing was, that in the second set, the umpire called out one Borg´s first serve, (it was clearly on the line). Then Bjorn served his second serve, it was in, and Mcenroe intentionally hit it way out of the court, giving Borg the point. Incredible, but Mcenroe behaved like a gentleman.

Borg's phenomenal level on courts of all speeds is what I find most impressive. 5 consecutive Wimbledon titles on fast, low-bouncing grass and 6 wins on the slow, high-bouncing clay of Roland Garros. 3 consecutive French Open-Wimbledon doubles is one of the all-time great achievements. His weakest Major (considering he played the Australian only once) was really the US Open with 4 finals, losing to two other greats McEnroe and Connors twice each. He only ever played 4 Majors on hard and reached the final of 3 of them. By comparison, it took Federer and Nadal until their 11th Major on clay and hard respectively to win one and Sampras played 13 Majors on clay, reaching only one semi. His 22 titles on carpet also show his ability on fast courts. He had 3 years where he reached 3 Majors finals out of 3 played. The only reason his number of weeks at #1 is so low is due to the poor system. He was voted ATP Player of the Year for 3 years that he did not end as #1.

I'm not surprised that the most impressive aspect of Federer's game which no one ever mentions because they either(1)fail completely to notice it or (2) notice it but fail to recognize its' significance, is Federer's uncanny ability unlike 99.9% of other tennis players to keeps his eyes down, looking at the point of contact of the racket head with the tennis ball THROUGH the follow-through on a forehand or backhand! That enables Federer to have the incredible consistency on his forehand and backhand (especially on passing shots) compared to other players (even other great players). Either Federer had that ability naturally from the start or he learned to do that through tremendous, disciplined practice.

As Edberg told Todd Martin (DURING THEIR atp MATCH) in that heavy Swedish accent, "You've got to watch the ball hit the center of the racquet."

@@tonymiller6847 . Undoubtedly, the overwhelming majority of players cannot physically see the ball hit the strings of their rackets because the ball is moving way too fast for the human eye to actually see the ball hit the strings, unless of course a player has the uncanny visual acuity of a Ted Williams!

Bjorn litteraly invented the open stance forehand so that should be the compulsory answer to the question " what shot..." His open stance was a revolution that opened the way to modern tennis. On a different level, he wasn't the first but the ONLY one to achieve rockstar status. Girls were screaming , screeching and waiting underneath his hotel windows. Roger's tremendous charisma and his perfect ambassadorship of tennis is undouteble but I'm sure Mirka is happy that Roger only became the George Clooney of tennis after she married him ! Nice to see these two guys , so different and yet similar in many ways. One of the things they share is being part of two of the greatest sport rivalries not just in tennis but allsports : Federer/Nadal and Borg/McEnroe . Neither Borg nor Federer would have been half as great without their nemesis. I wish I could thank these guys , Federer, Rafa, Borg and Johnny Mac for the joy they brought me in a 25 year interval.

Borg had it right. Roger learned this as well, and I've heard him say this. When you get upset and show lots of anger and emotion, you are just empowering your opponent. It is not going to do anything but make them know that you are ripe for the picking. Doesn't mean you aren't fuming on the inside, but if you're able to harness that emotion and channel it correctly, it is an incredible skill and has a strong psychological effect on the opponent. They never know what you're thinking. They know they can't get to you.

I loved that they let Borg talk more since it's rare getting to hear him and his experiences. This interview reveals how much people take calmness on court for granted and hating Federer when he loses his cool on few occasions not understanding the amount of effort required for keeping that burning emotions inside and not taking them out in inappropriate manner for people to idolize. Still there will be idiots sitting behind screen without experiencing a second of that level of pressure calling it fake.

Even though their games were different, from two different eras, Borg and Federer share a common trait, but you would have had to live in the 70s and see Borg play, and appear in the press to see the similarity.
They both were the epitome of "cool".
McEnroe and Connors were fiery. Nadal is intense. Lendl was impersonal. Becker and Sampras were imposing. Edberg, like Henman, were the quintessential gentleman.
But Borg and Federer are "cool". And you can't teach that.
