That's the thing. Fed didn't need to be at his best to be the most stylish player the modern game has seen. He was always that, except on those days that he was _really_ off (which mostly happened as he turned 36-37). But at his best? He was tennis descended from above and made flesh on a court.
Agreed. Federer is a true artist, and one proof of this is that his technique is almost impossible to fully reproduce. That's because it's integrated to the point where it's not just a part of him - it is him. In a way, there is no technique any more - not in any separate sense. It's simply how his body expresses itself. That's what makes it so natural and so inviting to copy and yet so impossible to replicate. The challenge Federer lays down to us, like all artists do, is how to find that level of integration in ourselves, whatever our art form is, and to find our own naturalness.
At his peak his level was the highest in my opinion, he would take a set off Nadal at French open quite easily at that level for example. Just sustaining it was the problem.

I think there will be many more chances to see him live. I think part of the reason he's retiring is so he remain at a super high level for the next decade, still good enough to challenge a top 10 player for a short stretch. He could try to come back for a shortened season but the strain of a tough match could completely ruin his knee and he wouldn't be able to play in retirement.
I think Borg could have been the GOAT if he hadn’t retired so early. To think he won five Wimbledon finals in a row is amazing. Certainly nobody better with a wooden racquet. He and Roger are probably my favorite of all time in the open era. They just got on with business on the court and were so ice cool.
I'm old enough to remember these two great champions when they were at their best. To me, Bjorn was the early model for what Roger would later master. That smooth style of moving around the court. Never ruffled or hurried, no matter what his opponent was throwing at him. But Roger also could adopt some of McEnroe's game, and serve and volley his way to victory. Federer was like Fred Astaire or Michael Jackson, dancing across the court. Just a totally unique style, along with the ability to conduct. himself like a gentleman, win or lose. Something that even Johnny Mac learned to do over the years. Always thought that Borg would have been the first man to 20 grand Slam titles, if he hadn't burned out and retired at 26 years of age!! Back in the day....
He’s aged so well. So articulate and such a moving tribute to the GOAT. John M’s also a legend - seeing him destroy Connors in the 84 final in 80mins…..never seen a final like it!
Roger Federer have 20 major titles still his fans are crying over losses at Wimbledon 2019 they have to accept Novak Djokovic is better player than him at Wimbledon Djokovic focuses on Wimbledon and Roger Federer focuses Halle open Djokovic is extremely dangerous and brutal in majors Federer should feel proud of 10 Halle open titles and accept Djokovic as 🐐 Djokovic doing exactly what Nadal by Dominanting Australian open for a decade(2008,2011 to 2013,2015 to 2016,2019 to 2021 and 2023) Nadal is dominating French open and Djoko is dominating Australian open Djokovic is playing best at Wimby too by winning 7/8 Wimbledon titles also He rarely loses in finals except 2013 Djokovic is only player who will win 25 major titles in open era actually
As a kid growing up I always thought Bjorn was the coolest, Roger is a gentleman in the truest sense of the word, Class act, gracious and humble. Real pleasure to watch Bjorn dip his hat to Roger from one class act to another.
Legends will come and legends will go. But 1980 Wimbledon...the finals will, for me be the greatest tennis match I have ever witnessed between 2 colossus players. Sorry Roger. You are still great.
I feel that the way Roger plays tennis, and the zone he is able to get into is so rare. that he must be authentic in the rest of his life. Otherwise the Universe couldn't work for him in the way that it has. Words would never be adequate to explain the heights to which he has played the game for so many years. I watch him most days over the last 20 odd years, it helps my timing just to watch him. I love Pete Sampras and Roger Fed, and of course Rafa and Novak, as well as appreciating all the other ATP players. I don't think anyone will ever hit the ball like Roger though....Just surreal ....
Two legends Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe agree and praise Roger Federer as the best.Nadal and Djokovic have won more grand slams than him,but the world picks always Roger Federer as the most popular Tennis Player.Tennis witnessing three all time greats i.e, Federer,Nadal and Djokovic competing in the last two decades and winning 63 grandslams between them was unparalleled record in the history of Tennis.
@@rouajohn I do consider Federer perhaps the most talented, but in. Reality it’s truly impossible to compare completely different times and qualities. Borg basically invented the high topspin all-court game and Mac’s serve & volley looks so effortless but if you try to emulate what he does (and people have tried), you realize it’s all talent. Love ‘‘em all
A few words from Borg count for a lot, when he says " to be your friend" with such a tender expression beats a whole pile hyperbole from Mac. Borg never had to say much, in his pomp he was one of those extraordinary people that you could not take your eyes off. There's a famous photo of him surrounded by hundreds of people outside centre court staring at him in awe. That's a very very rare quality. Elvis had it, Ali had it, Steve MacQueen, but that kind of magnetism is given to a very few. Your body language is doing all the talking for you.
I grew up absolutely idolizing these two guys. Bjorn was like a rock star who captivated the world even though he was so quiet on court and Mac was the complete opposite, a loud mothed, bad boy genius. Fire and Ice. The first two real superstars of tennis in my opinion, the Roger and Rafa of their day. Man does time fly.
Hahahaha! Awesome commentaries. Johnny Mac is so right, Roger plays the most beautiful tennis anyone has ever played. He is a great guy on and off the courts and the love for Tennis he has is undeniable and understated. Thank you Roger for giving us all the privilege and pleasure to watch you do your artistry and wizardry on tennis courts all around the world. Best of luck and hope to still see you on exhibition matches or perhaps as a commentator.
What a career, all these achievements, still grounded in humbleness.. one of the greatest athletes of all time, in any sport. Thx for the memories Roger🙏
Watching McEnroe/Borg/Conners made me want to play way back then. Short lived. Turns out I was much better at other, but still fun being beaten badly by my best friend and his little brother who just devoured this game.
Wow ! Seeing this two Legends ! Brings Great memories when I was a tennis player in 🇲🇽 Mexico ! I remember : Guillermo Villas, Vita’s Gerulaitis, Borg , Connor , McEnroe, Ilie Nastase !! 💪🏼✅😭😭! What a memories !!
Mc Enroe resumes it well: most beautiful player, most beautiful tennis. And no, it's not only winning that makes you great. It's that, but all the rest next to it. And on that level, there's a gap with all the rest.
Who can forget that memorable Wimbledon finals of 1980. One of the Greatest match in the history of Wimbledon. Talking about Roger Federer is like showing light to the sun. One of the greatest and elegant player of all times. Who can forget Rod Laver, winning 2 calendar grand slams in 1962 as an amateur and again in 1969 as a professional. Although he won 11 grand slams winning 2 calendar grand slams in modern era is is unthinkable. Hats off to you Sir. Two great players born within a space of 24 hours but in different eras, one on 8th August (RF) and the other on 9th August (RL).
I will so miss your beautifully artistic playmanship. I have never witnessed more elegant strokes and movement on the court. I knew this time would come one day, but it saddens me none the less. Have a wonderful and fulfilling retirement, Roger. Oh! that backhand stroke! A thing of beauty!
While we all have our favourite players, Roger's was the talent most of us wish we had. I don't know of any other player whose tennis playing has been called "beautiful" by another great of the game. Also, his behaviour on and off the field was beyond reproach. Tennis could not have wished for a better ambassador. He made watching tennis all the more compelling and I'm sure he not only made tennis fans watch more tennis, but like other sporting icons, Tiger and Jordan, he captivated even those that were only mildly interested in the sport - a true measure of greatness.
John its never too late to start moisturizing your forehead. Bjorn you're a beautiful man. It's funny Tsistipas is in the background I hope he tries to learn more from Roger than just emulating his backhand. You know fair play, never giving up (roger never retired in a match in over 1500 matches) that's staggering.
@Ghost of Gerulaitis Agree it was a bit too snarky, but gotta confess noticing the forehead before I read Roman's comment. Through sailing know a bunch of guys Mac's age and older, who as a generation were real spotty with the sunscreen, and today are paying the price with too frequent trips to the dermatologist.
Roger's heroes speaking of him with such great respect is an honor in itself! Thank you for entertaining and thrilling us with your brilliance in and off the court, God bless you and your family 🙏🧡
For a fast court player who turned pro, played in the 90´s and was born with the serve & volley playing style, who learned and developed his skills in the ultrafast courts, playing against Agassi, Haas, Chang, Kuerten, Rafter, Ivanisevic, Rios, Safin, Kafelnikov, Sampras, then suddenly having to adjust to the slowing of all surfaces and bieng forced to play another kind of game from the baseline competing with the best grunters ralliers of all time in Djokovic and Nadal, and STILL WIN 20 MAJORS WITH A ONE HANDED BACKHAND? wow, that makes Roger Federer the Undisputed Greatest Player of all Time. No other player under this conditions, will ever win 20 majors with a one handed backhand. Two handers have always a big advantage over a one hander in consistency, and with the todays raquet & string technology and also with this type of unified slow courts all over even more ...Its almost impossible in todays game (since 2005 more of less) for a one hander to be successfull ... What Federer achieved is legendary. Beat Nadal 16 times with a One hander? including 4 Grand Slam Finals? Best of 5 with a One hander? Beating Djokovic more than 20 times with a One hander? in slow surface conditions? Thats unexplainable ... If conditions would have stayed the same as they were for 100 years, then Federer would have won al least 30 majors, no doubt. What Federer acomplished is like seeing Djokovic and Nadal winning 20 majors in the 90s or 80s, in the ultra fast conditions with those raquets ... Roger Federer IS tennis. Greetings from Argentina.
How is the greatest of all time when he has a losing record against 2 players. Borg and Laver don't have a losing record against anyone. Federer won most of his GS against average players like Roddick, Hewitt etc once Nadal and Novak came along he didn't win many. He's most assuredly not the greatest, just a bandit who cleaned up during the post Sampras- Agassi vacuum at the top of men's tennis.
@@AIJimmybad Roddick average? Hewitt? Nalbandian? Safin? Ferrero? Agassi average? Haas?, Moya? Laver had a losing, very bad losing record against Pancho Gonzales, Alex Olmedo and few others, you know nothing. Ill take Nalbandian, Ferrero, Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt, who were BEASTS in their teens and early 20´s any day over Berretini, Tsitsipas, Medvedev, Thiem and Anderson. The slowing of the courts and the current string and raquet technology, which future players are going to take advantage and benefit even more, has your brain atrophied. You are totally deceived.
If these two talk about Roger like that, it is definitely because Roger transcended the history of tennis and sports, as a professional but mainly as a human being.
Listening to these two incredible and vocal players brings tears to my eyes. I grew up watching Rod, Stan, oh so many others. Rafa is my absolute hero as is Roger. Thank You Roger for ALL YOU DO AND WILL DO. Thank You John and Bjorn as well.
Every time I hear anyone giving Federer a tribute, I can't hold back the tears. I relate to everything they say even though I've never met him. Federer is a rare human being that is a people's superstar.
I am so glad that I have witnessed him once live at the Atp 250 in the semi final against Kyrgios. This was also probably the best match i ever saw live
I started playing tennis when these two were going at it. When you would watch them on TV you honestly could not tell who was going to beat who for each point. It was awesome tennis. Borg was my favorite because of his powerful baseline game and ball control. Plus he never ever lost his cool no matter what. And in those days Macs emotional game was surprising even shocking at times ! It's neat to see and hear him now so much more laid back ! Honestly back in 70s and 80s he was considered the "bad boy" of tennis due to his often explosive anger on the court. We didn't know what to make of him ! Now I really appreciate the insight he brings to the sport.
Off the top of my he head, I met Nadal, Laver, Kramer, Rosewall, Stolle, Emerson, Drysdale, Gerulaitis, Borg, Connors, Sampras, Courier, Chang, Agassi, Moya, Edberg, Medvedev, Arias, Gilbert, and others and Roger Federer is my favorite player ever. He’s the Champion’s Champion. He’s kind to ball kids and as McEnroe said, he’s as real and polite as he appears. He’ll be missed.
I was too young to watch Borg,Connors,Mcenroe and then Lendl duking it out but it's been amazing to watch this great era of Federer,Nadal,Djokovich truly fantastic and I agree with Mcenroe, Federer has been the most magical player to watch, an artist, you could imagine him playing any style in any era.

it is always sad to see legends retire.. Because some of the magic that they possess and that we get to experience goes with them. I was never a fan of tennis, until saw Roger Federer play and i instantly knew when i saw it that this is something beyond normal tennis. Watching it was like watching him dance with the wind.
Always good to see them together, the greatest Tennis rivalry at the end of the 70s beginning 80s, great players, Bjoerns Fila kit including his red top is the most classic tennis wear of all times
As a massive fan of Rafa but also a fan of Federer. It truly saddens me to see Federer retire. He gave us all so many special memories and iconic moments. How special that him and rafa had a rivalry they had and on top of it they are both great guys and genuine friends. I truly hope we get to see him play next to Rafa for his finals match at the Laver Cup. Thanks for everything Roger!
He never played to lengthen the rallies and stay in them. He took the initiative always and went for the killer blow every chance he got. They literally slowed down every single court which worked against him and yet he got 20. Will never see a tennis player like the peak Roger Federer.
These comments, from two of the greatest ever, speak volumes. Roger, you will be respected and recognized by true tennis connaisseurs as the greatest masterpiece of tennis. Beyond records.
when we talk about GOAT, we are not talking about numbers. There are more highlights in five minutes of Federer's video than the entire career of Djokovic, Nadal and Murray combined.
If you really don't think that Rafa & Novak have career "highlights," then you are clearly not a real tennis fan. You're just a biased Roger fan. As a Novak fan who was a Roger fan before that, I can conjure up memories of all 4 players that are simply magnificent. Maybe you should explain your definition of "GOAT," because you cannot leave out the numbers... 14 French Opens for Rafa, 9 Australian & 7 Wimbledons for Novak. Novak is undefeated on Centre Court Wimbledon for the last NINE years,, and undefeated against Roger in Wimbledon finals. They are ALL magnificent, so please - either go away and remain biased, or celebrate all of them. We will miss all 3 of them desperately when they are gone.
@@garysaint-laurent6524 I didn't say Rafa & Novak don't have career highlights. Of course they do. Each in their own way. Do you play tennis? wat Federer do is magic. But yeah tennis is about endurance, not who hits more winners, most of the time... and that's become even more true on today's slow courts. I respect all opinions just get my point... if you boil it down to numbers then Zidane is not the best player in French history for example
@@fejuncor Don't u think when it comes to sports, winning is the thing that matters the most? So Goat will always be either Rafa or nole, they are bigger winners than fed is
@@eiyp3 Yes, it is. But we can he honest here, and I've said it numerous times already: fans of the other Big 3 have always had their guy down as the best, regardless of records. We have 10 years of online arguments as evidence. Further, what does it mean to be the GOAT of a sport? If you're invested in that concept, I cannot think of any GOAT that is a pure churner of the best statistics. There are always intangibles, and those are what captures people's hearts and minds, because that is the only way you can be the GOAT of anything -- the emotions evoked are the most important factor. The GOAT is not an actual, measurable thing, because evolution and changing conditions means you cannot compare eras. So, for Federer, the intangibles are the way he has gone about winning as much as he has; the spectacle he has put on in achieving all that he has achieved. This has got to be the part of reason he was being anointed so early on, long before he even had double digit slams (I don't have a problem with anyone arguing that there were also murky agendas behind his marketing at the time). Nadal has his intangibles too, and if he ends up the slam leader, you might see a shift. Djokovic is the one who will lose out here, so he is the one who is most dependent on statistics (he knows this, of course). He already has most, so, if he ends up with the slam record, he will have to hope that his resume is enough for people to embrace him. If that doesn't happen, he will have to be content in the knowledge that he was better than his rivals, with the record books showing this.

My two favorite players of all time are Roger Federer and John McEnroe.
Exactly right, Bjorn just got bored with it all. We were lucky to watch his cool grace.
Yep. I was coming to make the comment that Roger is Borg 2.0. You captured it perfectly. Roger evolved from Borg and took the style to new heights.
Seen these two at Wimbledon brilliant players Mac & Borg
No doubt it was poetry to watch those two go at it. Especially on clay !
Never thought Johnny Mac would make me cry but when he looked at the camera and spoke to Roger I started to tear up 😢
me too
It came right from the heart of John and Bjorn. Love u guys so much
He’s aged so well. So articulate and such a moving tribute to the GOAT. John M’s also a legend - seeing him destroy Connors in the 84 final in 80mins…..never seen a final like it!
Roger Federer have 20 major titles still his fans are crying over losses at Wimbledon 2019 they have to accept Novak Djokovic is better player than him at Wimbledon
Djokovic focuses on Wimbledon and Roger Federer focuses Halle open
Djokovic is extremely dangerous and brutal in majors
Federer should feel proud of 10 Halle open titles and accept Djokovic as 🐐
Djokovic doing exactly what Nadal by Dominanting Australian open for a decade(2008,2011 to 2013,2015 to 2016,2019 to 2021 and 2023)
Nadal is dominating French open and Djoko is dominating Australian open
Djokovic is playing best at Wimby too by winning 7/8 Wimbledon titles also
He rarely loses in finals except 2013
Djokovic is only player who will win 25 major titles in open era actually
Roger Federer won 8/12 wimby finals
Novak Djokovic won 7/8 wimby finals
Djokovic>Federer at Wimbledon also
Federer>Djokovic at Halle open only
As a kid growing up I always thought Bjorn was the coolest, Roger is a gentleman in the truest sense of the word, Class act, gracious and humble. Real pleasure to watch Bjorn dip his hat to Roger from one class act to another.
You are so right. Bjorn was the coolest
Everyone always has something to say about Roger besides his tennis and I think that says everything about him as a person.
1000%. When everyone talks about you as a person you know that person is the genuine article.
What a beautiful thought . I ll use this line in my line of career . Do u mind ?
Thank you John and bjorn
Legends will come and legends will go. But 1980 Wimbledon...the finals will, for me be the greatest tennis match I have ever witnessed between 2 colossus players. Sorry Roger. You are still great.
The most gracious Tennis player ever 🙌🏿 Roger Federer
I feel that the way Roger plays tennis, and the zone he is able to get into is so rare. that he must be authentic in the rest of his life. Otherwise the Universe couldn't work for him in the way that it has. Words would never be adequate to explain the heights to which he has played the game for so many years. I watch him most days over the last 20 odd years, it helps my timing just to watch him. I love Pete Sampras and Roger Fed, and of course Rafa and Novak, as well as appreciating all the other ATP players. I don't think anyone will ever hit the ball like Roger though....Just surreal ....
Love seeing these guys together. I remember all of the Johnny Mac and Björn matches when I was in high school. Classic tennis!
What legends these two were in their time.
ALL TIME...I HAVE THEM IN MY TOP 5 OR 6 EVER
@@soofitnsexy Absolutely.
Bjorn looks Great!💕💋
Two legends Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe agree and praise Roger Federer as the best.Nadal and Djokovic have won more grand slams than him,but the world picks always Roger Federer as the most popular Tennis Player.Tennis witnessing three all time greats i.e, Federer,Nadal and Djokovic competing in the last two decades and winning 63 grandslams between them was unparalleled record in the history of Tennis.
That's because if you really do compare them all at their peaks, I think Roger has the highest overall talent.
Nadal is the best
@@rouajohn I do consider Federer perhaps the most talented, but in. Reality it’s truly impossible to compare completely different times and qualities. Borg basically invented the high topspin all-court game and Mac’s serve & volley looks so effortless but if you try to emulate what he does (and people have tried), you realize it’s all talent. Love ‘‘em all
@@Coolproducts44 Nadal is the best clay court player ever. Not the best all court player.
@@Coolproducts44 Nadal is definitely the 3rd as he dominates only clay surface. Both Novak & federer are better than Nadal on hardcourt & grass.
Such a wordsmith our bjorn
It won’t be long until Sweden is known as a genetic septic tank with all the turds being thrown into its pool.
What do you expect his first language is not English
A few words from Borg count for a lot, when he says " to be your friend" with such a tender expression beats a whole pile hyperbole from Mac. Borg never had to say much, in his pomp he was one of those extraordinary people that you could not take your eyes off. There's a famous photo of him surrounded by hundreds of people outside centre court staring at him in awe. That's a very very rare quality. Elvis had it, Ali had it, Steve MacQueen, but that kind of magnetism is given to a very few. Your body language is doing all the talking for you.
@@jeremyd1021 In their prime, I recall John McEnroe calling B Borg "the bearded wonder".
@@ynot7787 Mac was in awe of him too, as he has admitted many times.
Tempus fugit😌
2 Legends speaking about a Legend. Borg, still ice cool. Pure Class.
Beautiful words form two great players, persons and human beings !!! good by Roger
We love you guys! Thanks, Borg and big mac!
John is a talker! 😆I just love that Borg and McEnroe are such good friends when they were once rivals!
Je me souviens de cette époque. Mon favori était borg….. le bonjour à vous de France 🇫🇷

Wow!!, Mac got emotional talking about Federer
Mc Enroe resumes it well: most beautiful player, most beautiful tennis. And no, it's not only winning that makes you great. It's that, but all the rest next to it. And on that level, there's a gap with all the rest.
Just a wonderful tribute to Roger wonderful person you will be so missed ♥️
Legends praising each other is always nice to see 👍🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Who can forget that memorable Wimbledon finals of 1980.
A lot of admiration for Roger from two of the greatest players of all time that I learnt so much from in my own game.
Fantastic story, what a tribute. Roger will be missed dearly
Excellent stat citing on zero match retirements. Love it, thank you. Says so much about Fed's outsized love and respect for the game.
Yes, this would be a great comment if you'd just left out everything except the last sentence.
@Ghost of Gerulaitis Agree it was a bit too snarky, but gotta confess noticing the forehead before I read Roman's comment. Through sailing know a bunch of guys Mac's age and older, who as a generation were real spotty with the sunscreen, and today are paying the price with too frequent trips to the dermatologist.
lol
Tsitsipas has a better backhand drive than Roger. He needs to learn to slice though.
Federer and mac were magical, creative, highly skilled players.
Roger I'm sad 😪 Roger Forever 🥰
Borg & Mc...no one like them!♥️😊
Mr. Borg you were the best at your prime!!
Best farewell we can have for Roger. All the great players (past and present) and fans are all under one roof for a proper send-off. What a legend.
Roger's heroes speaking of him with such great respect is an honor in itself! Thank you for entertaining and thrilling us with your brilliance in and off the court, God bless you and your family 🙏🧡
Borg was the best in my book, even with no U.S. Open wins..Robert at 67.
i am a total Federer lover but i agree borg is best, none can exceed his class but only equal.
My beautiful Bjorn Borg. Still gorgeous.

Sentiments he draws from everyone. Even his haters. You can't say that about many. He is the epitome of a superstar and all round nice person.
Former archrivals, all-time greats and now good friends. So nice to see them chatting together. 😊
Great guys the both of them... i followed them in all their matches in the 70's ...
If these two talk about Roger like that, it is definitely because Roger transcended the history of tennis and sports, as a professional but mainly as a human being.
I could listen to these 2 guys for hours.😎
Simply the best. Roger was the most beautiful best player. Borg and McEnroe were the best of their time
Listening to these two incredible and vocal players brings tears to my eyes.
The greatest match in wimbleton history between these 2 Gentlemen
Bravo both. Either side of the net, you are embedded in my mind, the human spirit, tennis, the time- thank you both
Respect for Mc Enroe also!
Thank you for him...
There is never one best in life, but like a Pele, a Jordan, a Woods, a Brett, a Federer…these are players that gave memorable performances! And in a special way soared above the best of the best🦋

it is always sad to see legends retire.. Because some of the magic that they possess and that we get to experience goes with them.
Roger Federer is without a doubt in my mind one of if not The Greatest tennis player that has ever lived.
My two legends for ever...
To watch two of the legends of tennis is awesome, but to listen to them speak of Roger in this way is out of this world! Thank you Roger, we love you.
You can tell they are such good friends, real chemistry there, even after all this years...
Will never see a tennis player like the peak Roger Federer.
started my love of tennis with these 2 wow
The greatest of all time. No doubt.
So Goat will always be either Rafa or nole, they are bigger winners than fed is
@@eiyp3 its not that simple, a lot of variables u need to consider. Davydenko 6 x 5 Nadal so the russian is better?
Des étoiles,
Plein les yeux..
Merci, Merci, Merci,
