Star always made a good truck they all have there bugs to work out Glad your workin
was a good try out, may return in the future
love the 4900; my favourite western star. we have a black one here in jamaica that's set up as a triple axle dump truck with a straight piped sig 600. Sounds amazing.
sounds like a cool rig, anything straight piped is cool i think, love to hear the different sounds they can make, and i know you guys down there sugar footin. sounds badass
never drove anything yet that turns as good as a star car an cab room was second to none
i do agree with the cab space, its large for sure. id have to do some tight wheeler work to compare the turning radius, i feel like the c5 is pretty good if the steering boxes are set to the max. im sure compared to a t800 it would win for sure
Man gravy money day or what !! 😁.
yes this was pretty easy
Yes the turn signals are the same, and im running a 22 4900 while my 09 t800s in the shop. I have to recalibrate my brain everytime i gotta switch trucks. Because after getting out of my kw i tend to drive on the shoulder for a little until it registers that i that much closer to sitting on top of the zipper.
thats a true fact too, i didnt think about it since the cab is that much bigger. im a white line rider in my kw
Jerrold you” ll. feel like a star driving that machine, glad you got some temporary work so far , I ve drove Western Stars in the oilpatch in Alberta, Northern BC once you get the bugs out and cat if that’s what power you have in it. the engine will do a good job. for you , / have a good trip where your going, and don’ t worry guy any good. oilfield transportation company would hire you in a heart beat with your experience and. watch your noise of your Jake brakes going through the small towns and small cities in Alberta / keep that oilpatch going Jerrold your services are needed / Bill S
thanks, i was just helping out...... at the time i didn't really make my mind, lots of great places to work
Oh come on! You looked good in that Star! 😆I don't blame you though, something bout a C5 that just feels right.
ive been drawn to kw since a child, laid my eyes on a fully 80s decked out one with all the glitter stuff inside, huge fan of the red, gold, blue, orange metal flake shifter and switch stuff, top it off with the glitter steering wheel
Our 15 4900 fs hood is wider and longer with the dd16 our new 24 western start sitting at the deal just killing me looking at it waiting for the assembly to be finalized… fenders headache rack ect to be done is the new 49x I believe it’s call with the power hood also with the dd16 quad axel heavy hauler
power hood? is that a extra 10 hp ? always painful waiting for the new truck to show up. ive only had to go thru that once and the guy that built it was cool with me stopping by anytime is the hood butterfly?
So much different shifting kw then western star. Also sit way higher. More front window . Lots of space tho. And yes new western stars have old style 4way flasher
the shifting was definitely different, out of all trucks i've never had a trans be that stiff
Great video Jerrold! Finally get to see you drive a Western Star pretty nice trucks ...right? I havent seen the inside of a new one for many years and they really havent changed much good to see. Nothing wrong with a tight box!
they didn't change the interior since i dont even know. i feel like its been the same for 2 decades, i used to run one in 2004 or 5. this was the interior then
That turn signal beeping would drive me crazy.😀🤪🤪
im sure its only since im not used to it, i westernstar a bunch when i was class 3. i dont recall it feeling weird at all
I’m over in the states. Southern Wisconsin. Just south of the UP and it’s smokey by us lol
we finally cleared up now, been nice for a couple days
Well Jerrold a W/S are about as reliable as anything that’s out there. In 1991 we got into privatized road maintenance here in BC. Western Star was the only “BIG” manufacturers that could meet delivery times. K/W, Pete, Mack were anywhere from 12-18 months delivery. W/S we’re hurting and needed the business, we were a construction company and only had two bionic bone crusher Mack Superliners for low beds, no plow trucks😳! W/S had trucks coming off line in 30 days, and we had six weeks to take over the contract. Those were the days when you could get shit done!
i think its still the same, takes forever to get a KW. its a shame the kelowna plant shutdown. i haven't had a ton of time in a mack, but the few i have been rough rides
I drove a 2016 W/S all winter. I found that it had a abnormality tight box too. Same hazard deal too
i didn't know it was a thing but i guess it is, seems harder to bang gears but i guess you'd get used to it
And Jerrold you will really like this, all “CAT” power!! 😁
i do likes me a cat, love the 425 and the 6nz. probably the 3408
The 3408 had a great sound with straight pipes!
A friend of mine had a W9 with the 3408 with straight pipes, he was belly dumping on our job on the Coq, you could hear him coming through the bush a mile away 😁!
Did the long walk of shame yesterday. Nisku to Gas Alley in limp mode😮💨
thats a long way....
Nothing like a new mistress to throw your game for a loop !
10-4
I drove the first Stars that came out of Kelowna back in the 60's then a brand new 1981 which was a pretty tuff unit considering the application. After that all my own which were KW 900-L's. Have no idea what these new Stars are like. One thing that annoyed me with em was when ya opened the door the mirror went with it.
yeah them mirrors, i've seen a few where door slammers started to crack the steel on the door
Jerrold the directional beeping sounds like a smoke detector telling you that the battery is dying
ha, yes it does
I put a 1 foot extension on my star shifter makes shifting way smoother
i dont really like the extension stuff. ive gone shorter with these long arm before
those western turn signal that is an option my cousin is a Western guy and all of is truck have the hazard as a switch in the dash
strange the switch on the dash. all trucks do usually since the 2000s. i remember kw had the pull tab on the signal stat, and wipers switch on the dash
The Old Truck stop that was closed forever between Maskwacis and Wetaskiwin Is being Rebuilt as a "Travel Resort" Will Include a Truck stop, Gas station, Casino and i believe a Hotel/Motel, Currently They are Doing Soil Reclamation, it's Supposed to Be open Christmas 2023, But I dont Think they'll make it As they got a Late Start, But who Knows!
I run the 49X..... in other words a Cascadia with Western Star makeup. The 4900 is still a pretty good truck but build quality is freightliner so wind noise isn't surprising.
i havent drove a freightliner since 2006. i dont remember the wind being a issue. the star was noticeable right away in a head wind
@@TimelapseTruckerRTOT ah OK yeah they are usually pretty tight. Ran 4900s and the 5700 before getting these 49X models. If memory serves me right the last freightliner I ran was an fld120 and it was a very leaky machine.
Backing up blind side is a breeze with Westerns
i do like the sleeper and that huge window on the side, id love to put a star sleeper on a KW
nothing wrong with the stars , the company that took over the contract where i was working only had 4800 western stars and mack titans for the heavy stuff like low loader work (140t rated). it's really down to how they are ordered and fitted out from the factory as how they Proform in the field and what discount that you get when placing the orders., 😉
no theres nothing wrong with them, just way different for me that day, i haven't been in one for a long time, almost 2 decades
Nice to see a forklift driver that knows what he is doing. Loading tubing at minus 40 with a ginsel operator is not fun. Is Jade drilling still around, out of Edmonton?
no pipe is fun in -40, jade...... not sure, haven't seen or heard about them in a long time
Every star I owned had soooo many issues with wind noise. The gear box has no feeling… the turn signal beeping drove me up a wall. I couldn’t stand the dash set up. I hated how many rattles the dash had.
i do hate rattles, and squeaks, the wind noise was ridiculous, i dont know if all are like that, had a 2004 and it was fine i thought. but the extra large feeling through me off. i didn't like it, im sure id get used to it just like anything. just felt weird
@@TimelapseTruckerRTOT I think about the rattles just shows the quality of the whole truck. Fit and finish is nice. I understand these trucks have a lot of moving spots for rattles and they vibrate more. Rubber anti rattle tape makes life better. Still can use the items just not hear the rattles
@@TimelapseTruckerRTOT and I understand it’s not your permanent truck so that’s not too important.
Stars were great when they were built in Canada, Daimler screwed them up like Freightliner
i had one for a short period was new in 2005 or 2006 with the DD by mercedes. i was expecting it to be awesome, i was let down, considering the truck was a body job
Have you got anything solid to go to after Cypris closes it's doors? Hopefully you get one real soon that's not going to fall thru after you start.
yes i pre planned and checked out all that is offered in red deer. with in mind the commute and kind of work, and of course youtube
All my dad had was western stars 4900x . They are amazing trucks not a big fan of the new styles tho like the 2000 style not this 2023 shit
i spent some time in one too that my dad drove when i was a kid, loved that truck and if i can buy it back i will i think it was a mid 80s truck
I had to come back to comment this one, I know why you had the fidgets and didn't know what to do with yourself. This truck is quiet and has cruise control.
was very quiet yes. i set the cruise and didnt have to shift too (power)
Which truck do you prefer that Kenworth or the Western Star
I’m kenworth all day. Would drive a small cab western star if I had to or would fit in it.
Westerns have less blind spots.
i agree
casino😅😊
Kw are more like a coffin . Lol
fitting since ill probably die in one
