What Can You Find & Reuse Inside A Computer LCD Monitor Or LCD TV Screen / HOW TO Recover Parts

  • Great news! I have found a broken LCD television in the trash (yes, I am a little excited here because there is something special I really want to reuse inside the TV to improve the quality of my videos)! The second good news is that the TV has clearly been thrown away because its screen has an obvious cracked Liquid Crystal panel, meaning that all other electronic components are likely to be 100% working! So let's open it to look what is inside. As always, I'm interested in any components that I could reuse in other projects: motors, switches, wires and connectors or other electronic parts (ICs, leds, capacitors, resistors, etc), because they are here 100% free!
    ► DISCLAIMER
Always make sure you operate in a safe and secure manner.
For this project this means, if you do not know what eletrolytic capacitors are all about and how they can injure you (they can kill!), then do not not open any devices before knowing how to keep yourself alive
    ► THE RESULT
After disassembling this LCD screen I'm getting:
    1) Some plastic parts (mostly ABS pastic), that I will recycle
    2) Small hardware (screws, bolts, rings): saved for future projects
    3) Metal parts: those are mosly custom brackets for the screen, nothing really funky found here but I have saved 1 or 2 that had potential. The rest will be recycled.
    4) Liquid crystal panel: that one is cracked and unusable: recycled!
    5) Various boards (power, inverter, infrared, buttons,...): am putting those in my stock of hardware to reuse for future projects. I especially like the connectors (HDMI, USB, ...)
    6) Various cables: nice connectors, saved!
    7) A decent set of speakers, can come in handy!
    8) CCFL backlights: I'm not into CCFL lighting, 1) because they work on high (lethal) voltage and second because they most of the time contain toxic mercury (Hg). Old tech, I will recycle those making sure not to break the tubes, goodbye CCFL!
    9) Light guide / prism / diffusion sheets: this is really why I got the LCD screen in the first place: this is a simple way to get professional diffusion material to use in video lighting system. Those sheets are just great: quality, size, texture, strength (and so much better that my current "baking paper" light diffusion "hack")...I love them already!!
Note: In the video I also indicated at this stage "polarization" sheets, I was wrong. Those sheets are present, but directly attached to the liquid crystal panel (silly me....). This is why it appears all black (crossed polarization baby!)

Nowadays, I've given up on reusing the electronics, I just scavenge the nice self-tapping screws and the screen panels. The thick plexi one is nice for, well, a thick piece of plexi, the diffusers are great for lighting filters, as you've shown.

Yep, tend to agree with that, always difficult to reuse individual electronics components since they may come with their own damage history. I'm only picking flat screens since I have direct use of the diffusers (for my lights) and those are masterpieces compared to my current baking paper...

What can I do with the old CCFL tubes? I took apart one big old flatcreen TV last night now I want to do something with the CCFL. I also have an old microwave oven transformer. Can these tubes handle 2000v?

Nice video! I have a similar pair of speakers salvaged from a broken CRT TV, what do you think I can use it for besides turning them into Bluetooth speakers or any music playing projects?

In my case, have always wanted to integrate them in a homemade sculpture...

The magnets in these speakers are usually pretty strong. Perhaps something along those lines

Great vid! I tuned in to see if you were going to cover the film materials inside. You did!
The prismatic film/sheets are EXACTLY what I go after when I get discarded flat screens at the dump. The silvered sheet with the ultra fine, horizontal fresnel-etched surface is OPTICALLY ASTOUNDING! And each TV manufacturer has different types ( and different layers of really cool translucent films that artists can use). As far as brands with the best films inside are: LG, Roku TV and Westinghouse, (old ones you can find them), Sony of course is good- but only the ones before 2010.
I've actually seen the fresnel texture etched right into the .125" layer of Perspex itself- thus eliminating a layer of film.
_You cannot purchase this film anywhere_ It's simply not sold nor available. It doesn't even have a standard, descriptive name to help you look for it!
Also, it's NOT what they call holographic film.
The film is unbelievable for lamps/lighting. Very unusual effects can be done with it. I'll show you when I'm done with my latest design. It's a design I've been working in for two damn years and discovering this optical film last year was so perfect for it, I nearly cried 😅
Note: Handle the film with vinyl gloves only. Fingerprints transfer really quickly onto it and there is No Way to properly clean it off. Be well and thanks for the only vid on YT that mentioned the film.

That's great. However don't toss old fans from computers. They will work well off a decent wall wart a sort of spot personal cooler for cheep

EDIT: nevermind, really didn't expect to get a result looking that up but there ya go

@@drumboarder1 wall wart. A dime a dozen various voltages. Found at good will® and even at the trash bin at homes. Cheep power source for computer fan . Window fan. Finding competers tossed out, and wall wart/ sheet ply wood. "Window fan " enjoy for little sweat labour.

labOtomy is the ONLY CHANNEL ON ALL OF UA-cam that showed and rated the amazing film inside the flatscreens.
Artists who watch this vid will be THRILLED to know about this material, as there is no other stuff like it around.
So....your comments are ill- informed and......uh....a waste of time
