Bought my 2005 corolla xrs in Dec 2004. Love the car, has 340k miles on original engine, trans and clutch. The engine finally took a crap a month ago. Planning on doing the same. Rebuild the original or get a low mileage 2zz and supercharge it, possible even make it an awd on top of it being supercharged. Basically it will be a long term project. But since I bought the car brand new, I want it to be awesome and keep it for another 20 years
I got one from San Diego, engine swap was great but OCV p1692 came on, 8 days past and decided to check it out. Connector was not on the oil switch sensor, plugged it in and ran rough when idle the engine starts knocking but not when driving it while applying fuel (gas pedal). Don’t know if a $60 Oil Pressure Switch Sensor will fix the issue but it was driving fine for over 3 weeks until I messed with that connector
Nice to know about the hooks being on the 1zz Corolla by default. The rear and front hooks are different part numbers on the GTS. The rear one is like at least $10 more.
@@2zzlow Yeah, I researched this when replacing motor mounts, as I thought I should support the engine from above…. but noticed the in the official toyota celica service manual they actually show you can support the engine by the oil pan with block of wood and jack in one of area of the engine section. So I went that route. Plus I know you have done it before. I had no issues BTW.
Also, I would think the 2003 would be more desirable as it doesn’t have air injection. I have a 2003 Vibe GT that I bought with a supposedly blown head gasket but I haven’t verified that yet as I’m working on a supercharged 2003 Vibe with the factory supercharger.
I live in California and we have state emissions every 2 years, I need a head with air injection to properly pass emission testing. I feel like it’s the other way around. An air injection head is more desirable because not many were made compared to the early year 2zz with no ports on the head.
Curiuos what a used 2zz goes for. Did you do a compression test to see how good the engine is or did the company do one and give you the results? When I pull a junk yard 2zz I always do a compression test as you can’t hear it run as they pull the batteries and punch holes in the gas tanks 8-(.
Now a days I’ve been seeing them sell for $1500+. I paid $1300ish for this one but had dealer service records it’s whole life when I ran the vin through car fax. No compression test but I’ll perform one myself in a later video. Easy way to tell if an engine has good compression is to listen to the hissing when you turn the crank and if it has some resistance when building pressure in the cylinder chamber from the stroke.
The last LKQ engine was nasty, lucky for you to get such a clean (inside) engine. Do you measure valve lash on your 2zz engines? There is a lot of stuff on the Lotus and Celica forums about worn intake camshafts.
@@2zzlow Well, it seems that the first 2zz engines are from 1999 and made their debut in the Celica SS-II (ZZT231). It came with the old style liftbolts (the ones that brake all the time) and the flawed oil-pump? The "revised 2zz" seems to be the one in the 2002+ Celica/Corolla XRS/Matrix XRS/ Vibe GT and the Lotus Exige/Elise. The revised 2zz came with the updated Liftbolts. So I don't know if there are oil-pump and/or camshaft differences through the years.
@2zzlow thanks for reply mate. You know why some 2zz especially on lotus can damage the intake camshaft? Maybe because need valve adjustment and the owner leave it with wrong clearance/lash?
Valve adjustment can’t be performed like a Honda. valve shim caps need to be replaced or to the correct specs and that involves taking apart the head which most people won’t do leading to that issue on the cam.

Watch my previous 2zz purchase from LKQ, the engine was 100% full of oil gunk/sludge. I’m happy they sent me a very clean one.

My 2zzge version got no holes in the head , but the holes are directly inside the exhaust manifold tubing. This was the early air injection system.
My 2004 has that engine hook so they probably have it tell 2004

I believe those were the early 2zz but i may be wrong. Ill most likely will be taking it apart and inspecting the engine.

Very clean mate! The marks on the intake camshaft is normal? Why don't exist on exhaust camshaft ?
not sure actually, its nothing serious as i run my nail over it and it doesn't get caught
