Benson seemed like the "Wise Uncle" to her. When Governor Gatling's sister tried to get Katie to boarding school, Benson convinced the Governor to drive to that school and bring her back.
I loved this show. Love how Benson moved up the ladder from Chief of Household Staff, Budget Director to Lt. Governor. Final episode was a great cliffhanger. Benson and the Governor going head to head in an election. Show ended before results were in. Brilliant
There were four different endings that were shot. One wherein the Governor won. Another wherein Benson won. Another wherein the third candidate won. And the one they used, a cliffhanger, which was unresolved. None of the alternate endings have ever been released, making it apart of lost media concerning the series.
And thus was a lifelong relationship started. Benson often was the voice of reason Governor Gatling trusted to help through crisis. Sometimes Benson might be a wise guy, but he got results.
The days of great quality tv, families gathered around the tv n watched this and many other shows of this era. I love coming across my childhood shows❤
Just one more thing I love the Goveners honesty with Benson and the way he cares . That I would love to see more of. He needs a honest person to trust and I've seen good people with good hearts in office that could use having good people to help do good things.
I was 6 years old when I first started watching Benson, although I didn't fully understand everything being said, I knew it was a comedy and I loved Benson his quick witty comebacks 😇
I think I was the same age and felt the same way. 1979 I was 6. There was something unique about Benson. I didn't understand some of it but it kept my attention at that age. Now I know it was special.
I never saw the Pilot Episode of this show because I wasn’t alive/a baby when it came out but wow 🤩 What a show! Robert Guillame is fantastic! R.I.P. 💐
They need to bring this show back to live TV channels. I am watching also Whose the Boss and Bewitched, Full House, The Facts of life. Sister, Sister! Sanford and Son, Frasier and Friends! Live TV need more shows on like Benson. Real funny comedy.
I never seen this, the opening is fantastic, I also like how he brought some cast members of soap to the show, different characters, but lovely actors/actress's
I like when she said “u must be Benson” and he said “why must I be Benson” and she goes “well only two blacks the governor will meeting with” so priceless 🙄
The out takes must be hilarious! I love this show. My son and I watch and rewatch and they are still hilarious! Great cast---the child is great, too! Not silly and I can understand everything she says!
This is such a great show; I watched it when it originally aired on ABC (?) and still enjoy it today. While I continue to appreciate television of today, I also make time to watch (if not newly discover) many of the shows of the past.
Robert Guillaume is the only black actor I ever saw who delivers Gary Coleman style wisecracks and keeps a straight face at the same time. (I have an insane crush on Inga Swenson a.k.a. Gretchen Krauss)

After the pilot, Renee Auberjonois took over the role of the Governor's assistant. The Christmas episode was my favorite. The whole cast took turns performing carols. Inga sang "Silent Night" in German and Robert busted out the best rendition of "O Holy Night," that I ever heard, and to this day is still my favorite performance of that song. Later in the series, Benson becomes Lt. Governor.
Lewis J Stadlen played John Taylor for the rest of the first season, replacing David Hedison. Stadlen HATED doing the show and wanted to go back to Broadway, so the producers let him out of his contract after season 1.
Sort of like in the Marx Brothers movies, they strayed from their zany comedy formula for five minutes while Harpo played his contractual obligation harp piece.
Loved Benson it reminds me when people and politicians had common sense and I am talking about both parties neither party got sense enough to get out of the rain
When Benson was on Friday nights, the Benson theme was the sign that the weekend had arrived. But at the same time my brother wanted to watch The Dukes of Hazzard and my parents Washington Week in Review.
The part I laughed so much when Governor Gatling mistaken Benson for Rev Jessie Jackson later said Rev Benson Jackson, then the Governor mentioned about his late wife was eaten by horses because his late wife wore a sugar plum costume made of sugar cubes.
70s/80's sitcoms had the best theme music.
Darn tootin'!
For sure
This is what comedy was all about back in the day it was clean it was funny and all ages loved it I could not get enough of Benson or soap

All Susan Harris shows.👍
