Hit the nail on the head Gabbiadini, heard it on the old interweb and just bleets it back out. I had the same replies on my MR2 review by Monky London in the UK.
Gabbiadini cheers mate, it’s actually running a forged build now and capable of 500whp when I upgrade the turbo to an EFR 7163. We are doing a re-review vid when I do this summer. Oh and the launch control now sounds like full anti lag. Much more impressive !
Yeah, prior gen to this is definitely "homely", I have to admit I've always liked the look of these as well. I'll go a step further and say Fiero GTs can be awesome too. Knew a guy growing up that had an awesome black one, with heavy work done to it, and some body kit work. That thing sounded amazing and was quick, flames out the back were cool too.
You guys might enjoy a channel called "Marty Sweatt" , he's doing a custom MR2 build...sorry Nathan it's far from stock. ua-cam.com/channels/qumRrR7DunveiEPaWfY1Tw.html
Have you ever heard of the Toyota 222D? Only 2 were made, created for Group S Rally which was canceled along with Group B. Think MR2 GT4. only 2 were ever made
Has a similar engine comceptually/in theory to the 503e that powered the IMSA Celica and JGTC Supra, those cars were capable of running 1000+ hp for qualifying lap times, and the weight savings provided by the 4 cylinder were what allowed Toyota’s two wheel drive Supra to compete and ultimately beat Nissan’s incredible Altezza AWD system.
I hope it's not uncool to link another video but here is an amateur older video of this same MR2 at 750whp, shifting at 9000, tach hits 8000 in fourth, that's 149mph. ua-cam.com/video/RnXRU8u2c8Y/v-deo.html
If anyone's curious of what that fluttering noise is on throttle, it's the boost controller opening and closing the wastegate rapidly to maintain target boost.
That's obnoxious as fuck. I've never heard that on any other one take. I don't understand why they can't use a more subtle system. That completely ruined this car for me.
PANTYEATR1 Me and my dad used to have 2. I had a 91 NA Auto and he had a 92 Turbo 5Speed. Both had there merits. The NA genuinely was a good Daily. Big enough trunk plenty of interior space n 25mpg. N the turbo was just a Go Kart Fun weekend toy.
If you're not merely being polite and you must tell me if that's the case but if it genuinely does interest you, would you like to see my 91 mr2 turbo? -Kevin from Minnesota.
The MR2 always has been one of my favorite cars, especially 1st and 2nd gen. Well the car already has 27 years, sometimes things happen. Great video, great car!
Brilliant Video as always man, thanks for your efforts and awesome content! And Kudos of course to those who let you loose in their cars ;) Glad the MR2 survived!
I remember Sport Compact Car did a MR2 build in the late 90's that ended up making around 600whp. I think Norwood did some work on that car also. They said it would do wheelies. The MR2 still looks great today, too bad they are almost impossible to find unruined.
That goes for basically every tuner car in existence. The muscle car crowd is pretty bad, but nothing like the tuner hipsters. They love to take beautiful cars and lower them to death, paint it a stupid color, add gay ass wheels, etc, etc. Just leave the car the fuck alone and drive it. Buy an older Civic if you want to rice something to oblivion. Stop destroying rare cars, morons.
My first car was an mr2 turbo. Ran just shy of 300whp and i thought that thing was fast as hell. I can’t even imagine what that much power in such a car feels like.
This thing is literally goals!!! Good to see 5s turbo content! I love my 5sfe in my celica but would definitely love to have a 5s turbo celica and mr2 😎
Your face on the straightaways tells the story of the power in that car. I felt bad (for you and Aaron) when the car conked out as you were starting the last lap, but glad to read in the description that it was just a blown fuse.
As a proud owner of a 91 MR2 Turbo this video makes me very upset there is still another 2 months of winter where I live ☹️ Awesome video Matt and props to ATS racing for creating such a beast !
Hey! It's the same engine I have in my 86 Camry haha. I swapped it in with the celica gt-4 drivetrain. Still working out some bugs with the wiring, but it is functional and extremely fast. Before the swap my car weighed 2596 lbs without me in it, but with a full tank, full interior and a street driving car. I have yet to weigh it now, but I imagine it is 100 lbs or so heavier now since I only had FWD before. I used to have an MR2 Turbo that's where my love affair with these engines began. Now I have a 4 door that can haul people, looks unique, has that 80's boxy nostalgia I love, and moves out like a modern 4 wheel drive sports sedan. Great video as always! Surprised that car handled so well with the drag slicks in the bag, usually the sidewalls don't promote the best cornering. See you on the next vid! Until they stop popping up, I'll keep showing up. And hopefully a wire came lose or you blew a fuel or ecu fuse lol, didn't sound like an engine blew and it was still turning over fine.
I've watched countless videos from you Matt and I don't remember you making that face before. Around 7:45-7:51 it's clear that this car was fun. I had a car give me that feeling in a while.
These cars had a beautiful body style,.. The MR2 and 93 Mazda RX7 were the two sexiest rides in 1993,..I eventually bought a 95 Nissan 300ZX TT, However these two I mentioned are getting extremely rare
Its apparent that you do respect those cars a lot witch major props for that!! That being said, lol with a car like that on a track you need to have that thing reeved and believe it or not they love it!! 6-8 grand down shifting through corners instead of using the brakes so much but you basically said the same thing but it's also not your car so most people say it's not my car! And go crazy. Right as I type it saying they love the rpms you say it broke. Dammit!!
Those were such nice looking cars in the day, hell they still are. My buddy took over his mothers 91 mr2 n/a stick car when we were in highschool and although i had fox bodies, i loved his little mister2.. The last generation mr2 spyders i could not get into, even when my buddy built a turbo kit for his spyder and formed Haas Pro Turbokits, it still wasnt the feel and or fun of that 91 mister.
I have a 1991 MR2 with 476,000 miles. Trying to correct an overheating issue. 2.2 non turbo. Fun car commuting 110 miles a day hwy 74 Southern California, with my daughter in a car seat . I was the original owners mechanic till he gave it to me.
Most probably an electrical issue, i.e cam, crank sensor, fuel pump wiring issue ,coil pack, or ecu. Well sorted car. I enjoy your videos, keep them up.
Matt you need to show us this monster one more time at full tilt!!! that seemed really fast tho lol you might need an airstrip for the extra 150 hp or so.I can't even imagine how crazy it must feel driving a car thats under 2500lbs with all that power.Must be like riding a 750cc sport bike, possibly a 1000cc if its at full 850whp mode.
whoever is editing the videos definitely mixed up the MR2's a few times in the B-roll drive-by footage. Other than that, awesome car. MR2's have always been my favorite cars, and that one is amazing
Nice set up!! Back in the days, my friend was the first one who pioneered a hybrid 5SFE block + 3SGTE head (5S-GTE) swap about 20 years ago! It was in a 92 Camry, MR2 turbo trans, fully built engine with Garrett GT4088R, chromoly axles, custom TEIN suspension, etc. IT was a super sleeper and a beast! At it's very best, it was pushing 980hp!
Either on-throttle surge from not being full throttle at that point (meaning engine cannot ingest all the air the turbo is pushing at that RPM, and it flows backwards thru the compressor wheel.) OR just the boost controller acting up causing wastegate to rapidly cycle open and closed.
Watch at 0:38 seconds compared to 3:37. I'm not a crazy mr2 owner! I'm not crazy! Okay fine I did buy a rusty mr2 turbo so I am a little crazy but the spoiler changes and the air intake hood scoop disappears.
Makes you wonder if it ever pulled any timing with all that boost again and again. Intercooler saturation and climbing intake air temps I could only imagine. Knock sensor was probably like wtf.
That's what I thought. A 6766 turbo is something they usually pair with a supra at minimum or bara inline 6 turbos not 2.0L. I mean the car is nuts and runs 9 seconds but I feel it would be better if they swapped a 2gr-fe and built that motor up with the turbo. At least it would have 3.5L of displacement, be lighter and wouldn't need anywhere near the boost.
ATS did comment that it is the duty cycle from the controller. I wonder if it is a single port or a dual port that typically reads the dome pressure and regulates it that way? To much to think about. I just woke up lol
I am completely sure I saw two different MR2's in this video, can you explain???? *Edit* go to 3:33, 5:11, and 10:35 to see the black MR2 with a different wing and no ATS decal
Ray Sir you are correct. Someone messed up in editing. The black car is Kenn Kite's 450whp daily driver. Also Kenn is 73 years old! What a bad ass. Sorry no OneTake of that car.
ATS Racing bummer about that, but it sounds cool. I love all 3 generations of MR2. We have had them in my family and I am heavily considering one for my next project
Always wanted one! Funny how we went from 2 door coupes to now everyone wants bloated 4 door vehicles to "fit in" (followers/excuse makers/didn't pull out! haha).
I love the MR2. The fact that it’s essentially a rolling death machine excites me.
Snap oversteer.
My first car was an mr2 with an ats ct27 LOL
it seemed really easy to drive to me. As long as you're not driving like a maniac it's fairly manageable.
Hit the nail on the head Gabbiadini, heard it on the old interweb and just bleets it back out.

This car is homely!? Second gen mr2s always get a double take from me, I think they are hot!
Sitting next to the Ferraris that ATS also brought out that day I would assume is the context.
Yeah, prior gen to this is definitely "homely", I have to admit I've always liked the look of these as well. I'll go a step further and say Fiero GTs can be awesome too. JoMaHa slightly overshadowed next to other beautiful cars, it's still the hot girl next door
You guys might enjoy a channel called "Marty Sweatt" , he's doing a custom MR2 build...sorry Nathan it's far from stock.
ua-cam.com/channels/qumRrR7DunveiEPaWfY1Tw.html
maxxjett films You should drive the aw11 sc. It's much more fun and lighter too.
Aaron is the man. He was so helpful with my build that was around 500whp. There is NO other shop id ever recommend for all things MR2
That smile after the first pull had to be the biggest smile on Matt´s face I´ve ever seen
He's a real car lover..
Nope, his smile driving Frank's Lotus for Drive was the biggest I've seen
Have you seen the 650 whp Evo smile , thats the biggest no doubt
650hp evo trumps this!
You obviously haven't been watching him very long. Go watch the N600 video.
Aaron, Scott, and the rest of the ATS gang are top notch! They always took good care of my MR2 and it was the reason why I kept it for so 13 years.
This is like a Group "B" homologation for the street, but more power with a racecar and easier controls. Definitely a death trap!
More of a JGTC MR2000GT for the street
it's more like an anti-homologation class: "narrow-track deathtrap one-off"
Have you ever heard of the Toyota 222D? Only 2 were made, created for Group S Rally which was canceled along with Group B. Think MR2 GT4. only 2 were ever made

ATS Racing will you swap for my mr2s 3sgte and a twinky?
ATS Racing So im curious what broke on the MR2 ?
Just a fuse. A really embarrassing fuse.
blown fuse
Thanks for the follow up comments! Very interesting.
If anyone's curious of what that fluttering noise is on throttle, it's the boost controller opening and closing the wastegate rapidly to maintain target boost.
I was! Thank you.
Yes , it was moderating the boost
That's obnoxious as fuck. I've never heard that on any other one take. I don't understand why they can't use a more subtle system. That completely ruined this car for me.
Thanks, I think it sounds uniquely awesome
Sounds like shit's about to break every second you're getting on it. That's fucking terrible.
this car is on my bucket list! i love the look of these cars
Russell Jones that's awesome! I'm a little bit smaller than Matt, so I'm sure it will fit me well if i ever get one
Get one as soon as you can; it is the most fun car I've ever driven or owned.
If you're not merely being polite and you must tell me if that's the case but if it genuinely does interest you, would you like to see my 91 mr2 turbo?
-Kevin from Minnesota.
Thats good because a 700 hp mr2 just might get you killed.
It always happens after saying those words "Just one more hot lap"
I’m glad to see this car on here, it’s an MR2 legend! Takes me back to 2000.
The MR2 always has been one of my favorite cars, especially 1st and 2nd gen. Well the car already has 27 years, sometimes things happen. Great video, great car!
I like how this video occasionally shows a different MR2 driving around, LOL.
Liked before the video even begun, this will be glorious.
i think i do this for every video lmao but especially on this one
I Love The ATS Racing Project Cars.. They Never Fail To Amaze Me.
Brilliant Video as always man, thanks for your efforts and awesome content!
And Kudos of course to those who let you loose in their cars ;) Glad the MR2 survived!
From the first 15 seconds I knew the owner was a genuine guy 💯 great vid fam

shredmonster76 you are exactly right. That is how I met Bob Norwood.

"If you need more boost we can turn it up"don't here that every day.
Also it was a blown fuse.
This car is crazy, hats off to ATS Racing and Matt.
I've watched countless videos from you Matt and I don't remember you making that face before. Around 7:45-7:51 it's clear that this car was fun. I had a car give me that feeling in a while.
Legendary call on the blown fuse haha, may not be a spanner head but can still diagnose a problem instantly after all the wheel time
ATS is a great shop! They swapped a 3rd gen 3s into my '91 and it runs/feels like a new car.
I swear I dominated with this exact same build in Gran Turismo 3 😆. Cheers to the builder! Always loved the MR2.
Love the MR2's. too bad they are all rotten in our area.
Amazing work guys. Love seeing this available!
that blow off valve is amazing
Tial blow off valve is the best bov in the business
Micah Hill it sounds like shit, take it off
And I believe you misspelled turbosmart megasonic
Micah Hill that’s not a bov lol it’s called surge
SI RICKO Exactly. You can tell Matt pretty much never went WOT because the turbo was surging the entire time
SI RICKO He had a bov with with the tension wound up pretty hard . On the higher boost you can hear it. But on light let-off you can hear the surge.
I bought my GT30r turbo kit for my MR2 from ATS racing. Good guys over there
Big ups ATS Racing!
I wish you could overlay speed info on the video
Well since he usually does these on public streets, he probably doesn't want to incriminate himself.
Bobson Dugnutt however this was done on a race track , why would it matter ?
David Wright he rarely films on a track so buying the gear to show speed probably doesnt make sense. I would love to see speed and g's but oh well.
Bobson Dugnutt lol he has money for gear bud. Not a good reason , they have cheap track cams that overlay speed for less than $200 . I digress...
Yes I agree
Normally don't really care about the MR2's, but god dam. Super impressed with those numbers!
Loved your reaction to the straight lines!
remember one of top secrets supras had a 3s gte in it and made over 700hp.
Flonaze83 the jgtc supras used 3sgte also.
Yup the most famous TOM'S Castrol Supra ran it!
That one was for sale in Norway around Jan/desember
Flonaze83 b
Toyota needs to bring back the Mr2 😍
Brave man! I never forget spinning on a slight curve in the passenger seat of one of these at 80mph. Luckily it stayed in the road.
13:30/"Boy has he picked a great spot to stand. Good thing I'm going slow." Best part of the video 🤣
Wow I love this build!😍 might have a talk with ATS about my mr2👀
Hey, I have been in this car! I knew Aaron as he was starting ATS, he is a great guy.
Beau Shaw thanks!
ATS Racing you guys tuned my car! Great tune! Will see you guys maybe this month for another tune
I still have one of his first 2.2 stroker motor that i only used twice b4 i got reffed.
Aaron Todd and Scott all great people i was fortunate enough to meet some years back
Wow this thing sounds absolutely violent
that is possibly the best sounding 4 banger ive ever heard, the exhaust sound not the turbo noises
In boost, Matt’s laughter causes me to laugh and smile along with him. I get it.
Dammit!!
These cars are gorgeous.
i was like "DENTON"?!?!? Step dad lives out there...awesome city! lots of parking!!! :D
Paul Kemp it’s over crowded now with expensive ass living ... parking isn’t free anymore either 😢
4:48 Why is that turbo surging like that under load?
First time I saw this car was at ATS in 2005. My car club had their Dyno for a day and that green MR2 was the first to go on the rollers.
Most probably an electrical issue, i.e cam, crank sensor, fuel pump wiring issue ,coil pack, or ecu. Well sorted car. I enjoy your videos, keep them up.
Finally a high HP mr2
sam there are more but mostly with k20 motors
Tevin Thomas yh I know wish this one was a k series with a nice big single
my favourite one take so far!
You’ve got the best job in the world.
This guys shop is right down the street from my house, always has some crazy stuff going on over there
I live in denton and my friend actually used to work at ATS for a short while. surprised to see this on the smoking tire, pretty cool.
Love how Matt calls the fuse straight off... Mr DeMuro would be off to CarMax for a warranty fix ;)
Tavarish would start to fix it, then buy another project car.
Helmet!!!
Edit: Gorgeous car and great review as always!
whoever is editing the videos definitely mixed up the MR2's a few times in the B-roll drive-by footage. Other than that, awesome car. MR2's have always been my favorite cars, and that one is amazing
So bad ass I love the sw20 mr2. I’ve had some ats racing parts on a few mr2’s I’ve owned. Good parts beautiful car. I need to get another one ASAP
4:50 is flutter. They didn't tune the boost controller correctly. It's pulsating in high boost either due to frequency or something else.
That is a cool looking car. A mini spaceship.
Your driving experience was hilarious..seriously looked like fun man. Lol
I worder which is more reliable this or the k swap mr2 in the 1320 vid
When you push a 4 cylinder the way that both of them have been, reliability pretty much goes out the window on both. So I'd consider them about even.
What's with the shot of the random MR2 at 3:34? It's not the same car.
What is that fluttering noise from 4:50 to 4:55 ? BOV Flutter?
Either on-throttle surge from not being full throttle at that point (meaning engine cannot ingest all the air the turbo is pushing at that RPM, and it flows backwards thru the compressor wheel.) OR just the boost controller acting up causing wastegate to rapidly cycle open and closed.
I love to see 5sfe actually get to live the high life
This makes all of my MR2 fanatic senses tingle
"Bob Norwood Autocraft" sticker on the back window....that dude is legendary.
Check out his turbo Testarossas & his Max 4 "Integra"...
Impressive power pull on straights!
At 3:37 the rear spoiler changes and the air intake hood scoop disappears. Watch the first few seconds of the video in comparison.
Watch at 0:38 seconds compared to 3:37. I'm not a crazy mr2 owner! I'm not crazy! Okay fine I did buy a rusty mr2 turbo so I am a little crazy but the spoiler changes and the air intake hood scoop disappears.
love ATS's products!
4:50 how come it makes that’s chattering noise while in boost?
first time i've seen Matt put his hand on his chest out of adrenaline lol
When he says, "Jesus Christ...." you know it's fast.
10:15 boost loading
Makes you wonder if it ever pulled any timing with all that boost again and again. Intercooler saturation and climbing intake air temps I could only imagine. Knock sensor was probably like wtf.
I have loved the MR2 sense the 80's model after model are awesome, excellent platforms for inexpensive speed monsters!
ayyyy i'm in denton tx too ATS, i lived in Okinawa, Japan for 9 years and loved tinkering with boosted cars, i'd love to see yalls shop sometime
Sounds like the turbo is really surging!
Jeremy Mitchell it's the cycle rate of the boost controller.
It's the waste gate bleeding off all the extra boost that turbo can produce. Remember It is a De-tune from its normal use.
My Omni GLH Turbo made the same sound while on boost for the street tune it had.
Ordering my new turbo from ATS Racing, billet ct27 for my 91T in 2 weeks cant wait!!
And is good??
I notice that when i'm watch these videos, i always hope that Matt will be impressed by the car he's driving, Haha.
the Dump nd the BOV sounds so good
Second Gen Mister Two. I love these to death.
4:49 YES ! Lightweight chassis for the win , that MR2 took off
I wasn’t ready for that stututu
Always wanted one! Funny how we went from 2 door coupes to now everyone wants bloated 4 door vehicles to "fit in" (followers/excuse makers/didn't pull out! haha).
the wastegate sound like it has a lots of work to do to keep that turbo pressure... so, did a piping collar pop or something at the end ?
When your driving and giggle, I literally feel what your feeling.
Me: Sees "850whp MR2"....
My brain: Welp, guess I'm gonna see someone die....
