I wish that hadn't been one I learned the hard way ;_; I always thought people were exaggerating when they said oils could damage dolls, but nope. Gooey strings of sticky resin pulling out with the eyes. It was so disgusting. The acrylic eyes were hopeless--they'd completely melted under the putty and are to this day the only pair of eyes I threw away! Of course, it also took a while to get to that point. Those eyes had been in with that putty for probably 3 years.
i know im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid lost my password. I love any assistance you can give me
@Leon Austin i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm trying it out now. Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
That was very helpful, thank you! I'm having a hard time placing the eyeballs into the head because my glued lashes get in the way all the time. How do you do it without ruining them?
Ah, yeah, the lashes can affect that! I have that issue sometimes too, especially on Laele with her ridiculously long lashes. I usually do it by putting the eye putty "snake" a little farther forward on the eye so that it smooshes in between the front of the eye and the eye well just a little. It's not enough to make the eyes too far set back, but it adds the tiniest gap for the eyelashes so they don't get smashed!
I think a lot of us keep a stash of eyes on hand so we can drop in different sizes and see what we like, but I remember how bewildered I was the first time a doll didn't come with eyes and the sales page didn't list a size for them!
Great video, thanks for all the details! The brand you show for the eye putty doesn't have the beige color on Amazon. Would you mind posting a link please? Thanks ;)
So I have a 3d printed head and was trying to difure out the eye size. Measuring in inches it seems to be 0.4375 inches which in MM is about 11.1125mm The eyewell is actually smaller than this head so I was wondering what size I should get? I was thinking either 11 or 12mm would work, but Im afraid 12mm might be a little big for him. Also very helpful video I wasn't too sure what I should be measuring if it was the ourside or inside of ths head. I guess both works and the measurements of the iris could be the same its just the eye including the white that could be measured too
Usually I measure the eye to the outside of the head because the eye well can be difficult to reach on the inside. I would expect a doll with eyes that size to need a 12 eye, or depending on how rounded the eye well is since the wells are usually larger than the eye opening itself. Measuring gets you close, but sometimes experimenting with fit changes things a lot. I have one difficult doll that has gaps with 12mm eyes but 14 is too big. Oval-shaped 12mm eyes ended up being the solution for him.
Most of my dolls now wear eyes I've made myself because I enjoy creating them, but when I'm buying eyes, my favorites are urethane eyes from MakoEyes or metallic acrylics from Ersa Flora. The metallic layer makes them really bright and reflective and a lot of my Ersa Flora eyes look just as good as urethane :)
I feel the eyes I ordered were too large. Do you think I could somehow get the Iris out of the full flat backed eye? I'm new, so maybe I'm wrong with it being too large, it just doesn't easily fit in the well like yours
It will depend on the size of the eye wells... some dolls that small use teeny eyes and some use huge ones! What's the sculpt/company of the doll you're planning to get? Maybe we can find some info on eye sizing. :)
Not usually with good results. Most eyes have high-gloss coatings on them to make them shiny and smooth--in my experience, acrylics are usually made of two bonded layers of plastic and if you try to alter parts of them, the two layers will separate.
It will depend on what you purchase :) If a doll is listed as "basic" it is available blank or with a faceup. Both options come already strung/assembled together. Choosing a faceup means it will come already painted, with eyes in, but it will not have a wig or clothes. If a doll is listed as a "full set with faceup" it will come with everything you need - painted face, eyes in, fully strung, with clothes and wig ready for you to dress it and put the wig on as soon as it arrives.
If you are on Instagram try the #bjdsales or #bjdforsale tag. Or try BJD Addicts on Facebook. I get most of mine secondhand. Don't get them from eBay. They are bootleg copies and frowned upon in the hobby.
Amanda Zoe's recommendations are great :) You can get many secondhand dolls for great prices. Most of mine came directly from the makers. The one in this video is a Doll Family A Practice Head, which I purchased through the dealer Alice's Collections: www.acbjd.com -- My doll Rhyllyn is a LatiDoll Rei Cristopher head purchased second hand and his body is from MyouDoll, also from Alice's Collections. My dolls Firal, Lulu, and Lillibelle are from Fairyland and were purchased direct from www.dollfairyland.com and the dealer www.denverdoll.com/ -- and Rune, Vahn, Laele, and Arrios are all from www.iplehouse.com :D Hope that helps!!
I never knew about the oily putty! Some very good tips. Thank you!

I like that you do these in-depth videos for those of us who would otherwise know little about such features :)
One of my sisters actually requested this one! She doesn't have a doll, but it did seem like a good idea XD
I think the eyes you made look great!

This is so very useful! Thank you for this video! It's good to know how to measure your dolls when you don't know what size eyes they need.

I bought one and didn’t know how to put the eyes in right and this helped a lot 😓

How can I buy it in Gulf countries?
hey! i have a question, i'm abt to purchase a 13cm doll and i don't know if i should buy 12mm eyeballs or 14mm for the doll

If I have acrylic eyes that are too big (14mm instead of 23) can I sand down the back to make them fit?

@@LomisPlayground Thank you for the reply! I’m so sad I got the wrong size. The eyes are so beautiful but they just won’t fit. 🥲
