This is how all covers should be philosophically speaking... Paying overt homage (evoking / invoking) the authentic material, while infusing the inspiration & inherent powerful reactive take the original had upon the cover artist (with a significant dose of their style).
Couldn't have written it better myself. It takes a lot of intelligence and sensitivity musically to do that. This is a perfect example of that mindset imo.
I've been listening to this cover for years. One of my favorite songs. You don't see the breakdown coming. Totally changes the direction of the song. Brilliant.
Well, you come to expect the breakdown after you’ve heard Failure’s version, I’ve heard literally 20 versions other than this, including Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda, and no one goes as hard, even the lead guitar with those bends just give the song what, in my opinion, needs. DM is great, they wrote it, but Failure, redefined it!!!
I first heard of Failure in the early 2000s. Year of the Rabbit opened for A Perfect Circle in 2003, and I had Ken Andrews fever. Failure is incredible wish they would come back
Oh and this video is WONDERFUL quality for being 11 years old. I wish I could have seen Failure, but this is a really good way to see how it might have been!
used to walk to school everyday to highschool. it would either be alice in chains self titled or this album fantastic planet. i just had to have those albums in my tape player walkman. those times are uncomparable.
They must have played Houston after Seattle... remember them saying it was the first time they did ETS live at the Seattle... Should have been winter/spring of 1997 if i remember correctly... after this tour they hopped on Lollapalooza... thanks again for this.
Guys and girls you have to listned to the recorded version is one of my favorite songs I don't even know other sogs of this bad failure but that cover they did liek someone said you be blown away
I wouldn't say they are any better than Nirvana. Really is apples and oranges. I feel they just came out at the wrong time. Fantastic Planet is an amazing album but it had no place in the "Grunge" world of the early mid nineties.
It isn't as good as the original. It fucking owns the original in every way possible. Ken Andrews conveys so much more soul. The original is so... robotic. This is angelic.
1997 Ozzfest Lineup * Main Stage: Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn Manson (started June 15), Pantera, Type O Negative, Fear Factory, Machine Head, Powerman 5000 Second Stage: Coal Chamber, Slo Burn, Drain STH, downset., Neurosis, Vision of Disorder You're a Failure. Don't hate.
i think he's talking about Troy Van Leeuwen, who was part of Failure and then joined Billy Howerdel with A Perfect Circle. Troy wasn't the singer for Failure, Andrew was
Andrew Fletcher of Depeche Mode said that he actually prefers their cover over his band's original version. i've heard alot of covers of this song. the sad part is i don't compare them to the original. i compare them to this.
Failure and Hum deserve so much more recognition.
Out of the million zillion gillion covers of this song, this is easily the best.

The drums at 1:18 before it breaks into the heavier part of the song always gets me. It was a great touch that added something to the original.

@joemc83 Pretty sure he means lollapalooza.
Korn dropped out and they got bumped up to the main stage.
It's so weird seeing him here. I wonder what he thinks of his Failure days.
As covers go, that was pretty good.
Listen to there recorded version of this cover if you think this is good you will be blown away.
Not just failure. DEFTONES FAR WILL HAVEN FAILURE shiner hum helmet mesuggah. its endless. all the bands that YOUR music want to be.
Glad you mention Deftones, the best alt-metal band ever. Another 90s treasure.
