This man is like a real life version of playing a FIFA career mode trying to singlehandedly win Ireland a World Cup or something. I'm so glad he's getting his flowers.
A very realistic career
@@SNAKERAKES I definitely haven't tried one and gotten bored halfway through 100 times

Absolutely love him for it
And both were big enough events to be worth covering

Gotta balance it out, you know.
Niran couldve been a legend like Sunil Chhetri if it wasn't for the catastrophic discombobulating knee injury
Yeah😢
I bet Sunil Chhetri would of sorted his cable management by now!

Such a legend for India. The one man who kept this sport alive in the country

Sunil Chhetri is not only a great goal scorer and striker, but his effect on the Indian national team has been incredible. The team still has a long way to go, but it is in a much better position than it used to be, thanks to his work carrying the team for years
I remember The national team used to play on pitches with no grass, plain red dust. Sunil Bhai came from those dark ages. Only in the last five six years people have started following the national team regularly. And almost all credit goes to him. He basically pleaded and requested people to give football a chance , He's also one of the very few players to have an actual connection with the fans. Football in India will never grow in our lifetime, but what we have now is 1000% better than what we had when we were growing up, all because of our captain.
as someone of Indian ethnicity, this is a sad day, best Indian player of all time, legend. one of those football documentary channels needs to do a video exploring this guys early days, it's so fascinating.
Best player to play for India yeah. Best Indian player probably not.
Indian is not an ethnicity it’s a nationality ffs
FIFA has actually done a documentary on him called "Captain Fantastic", it's quite easy to find on the FIFA website and on Google
I swear I saw like 3 videos posted in the last 24 hours on this channel
Thought I was tripping!
Welcome to the Penguinz0 of Football channels. Feel free to bully him about getting his studio set up and taking runs.
In a cricket obsessed country, a man carried football on his shoulder for a long time, he conquered whole nation, even without appreciation he carried on and he grew tired, now its time to rest legend #sunilchhetri
The GOAT of Indian soccer. 🫡
EDIT: Didn't see that guard of honor clip and now I'm getting all choked up lol
I am flabbergasted by the depth at which you know this situation. I salute you. Love from a proud Sunil chhetri fan since childhood.
Zealand: "For the love of the game"
Me: *points at screen*
This guy is the OG of Build a Nation saves!
The name that comes to mind with the passport thing is Dilan Markanday (currently of Blackburn, formerly of Spurs). He has been very vocal about wanting to play for India but he’d have to give up his UK citizenship to do so and would be stateless until his India application was accepted.
NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION MENTION RAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
He (technically) played in my club, farewell legend
sporting?
A lot people seem to be unable to grasp the concept of privilege. The difference between messi being born in Argentina and him being born in India is a great analogy
Decorate the room Zea! Otherwise I hope your sleeves slide down next time you wash the dishes!
Zealand mentions that Laos and Cambodia would give their left arm and left leg for a player like him. Two countries that struggle with landmines and deaths from them to this day. So I think they're giving plenty.
OOF
When Sunil Chhetri made his debut in 2005, India was ranked 129 in world football. On his day of retirement, in 2024, India is now ranked 121. This is not a dig at Sunil Chhetri. As an Indian football fan, Chhetri isn't just a leader or an icon. He is the vessel through which Indian football is perceived. An Indian may not know the first thing about football, but he does know who Sunil Chhetri is. His contribution to Indian football off the field is far greater than his on field achievements, and that's saying something. He walked so our next generation can run, he's the figure Indian kids point at when they tell their parents they want to be a footballer.
So why do I bring up India's world ranking?
Four letters. AIFF, the All India Football Federation. A sleazy organisation controlled by politicians and nepotism instead of people who actually know about football. The President is a politician for India's ruling party, the BJP, who won his last AIFF presidential election by a landslide 33-1. Who was his opponnent? Baichung Bhutia, arguably India's biggest footballing icon barring Chhetri for the past 50 years. That says all you need to know about the AIFF. When our national team coach consults astrologers during team selection (I wish I was kidding), and doesn't just get away with it, but is actively encouraged by the federation, then it's nothing but a miracle that we're at the same place we were 20 years ago, instead of being far far worse.
It would be disingenuous to remember Sunil Chhetri as the man who improved Indian football leaps and bounds. Yes he brought it to the forefront of Indian public perception, but in reality he's the engine room worker single handedly keeping a broken ship afloat, one that is led by a mad captain who sails headfirst into icebergs and jaggedy rocks at sea. HITC Sevens has a very detailed video about the AIFF, one that I'd recommend to any football fan, Indian or otherwise.
Thank you Sunil Chhetri. The leader, legend, and icon that we never deserved, but sorely needed.
Our federation is the worst 🤧🤧🤧🤧🤧
He managed to bring it to 105 before we screwed up our Asian cup
so well described man. Absolute legend of the game man
@@studentNEET319 in constantine era we were acctually 98 at some times
@@ameenshihab3616 we keep screwing up our Asian Cup run, during Constantine era,we could've gotten to the round of 16 which would've solidify our potential,
Chhetri did make it to Europe, he quite infamously joined sporting, played 3 games in their B team and returned to India right after. Maybe it would have worked in a different team or at a different age but he definitely had a shot at making it in Europe
He also tried to join the mls in like 2010 but got rejected
Really appreciate you making this video, Z! As a football fan growing up in India, Him and Bhaichung Bhutia were the goats for me, when everyone else was mad about cricket.
tbh he's like 39 and still id say he's way better and more athletic than any of the other players we have. We will never have another person like him in indian national team
FIFA 13-15, when India was a playable team and I was confident enough to take the piss out of my friends, I'd play as India while they played as Bayern etc and Chhetri used to destroy folks for me. Always will remember him
Big Zealand tings
Zealand bro why u got me sobbing 😭😭😭
Hes beyond legendary man, hes mythical, his contributions off the field are massive man, without him Indian football would be non existent.
He and Bhaichung Bhutia are names known in Indian footballing circles as legends
Definitely one of the unsung heroes of the beautiful game.
youre so good with words!
Ronaldo unlikely to have made it, but no way Messi gets growth hormone in India
Ronaldo could if he lived in a certain region like the south or north-east
Sunil Chhetri is a total legend. He is the Asian Pele. If he was in Europe he would have got a lot more attention and attraction but he’s managed to craft a legendary career and he’s an inspiration for all! India is lacking young talent and youth coaching cultures - I’m worried that India or the world won’t ever see another Sunil Chhetri. A true example of a person who dreamed and achieved his dreams because of the love of the game! He’s up there with Messi, Ronaldo, Pele, Maradona, Bobby Charlton, Zidane. It’s a true underdog story from poverty to the path of superstar icon status. He’s an absolute icon and epitome of a model citizen and national treasure who engaged a nation of 1 billion people with football and carried the national flag for almost 20 years!
*He is one of the best football players of all time!*
It’s a real shame that we never got to see him win an Asian Cup or winning qualification to the World Cup. If India makes it to World Cup 2026- please just come back Chhetri and carry the India flag one final time - but what a send off!
“A Chhetri smile at the ball at his feet. A country on his shoulders, waving goodbye to a part of himself” - what a line!
I know this is like the silly channel or whatever, but genuinely thank you for sharing this. Really nice to see, especially with all the racism towards Indians (and other minorities as well) online after the USA won in cricket.
This is the best channel on UA-cam. Change my mind
Valid
Seeing Chhetri tear up almost made me tear up, especially knowing that he did it for nothing except just purely the love of football.
As a Malaysian, I have to say, I respect this man.
dude I teared up a bit with the story about the post match video going viral and packing stadiums ngl
farewell you legend
What a legend. They should hire him for the national team staff.
After all that he had done over his career, we still had fans hounding him for his retirement, saw plenty of youtubers calling it shambolic, he is holding the team back and in typical fashion saying that he is playing only for records
next few years are going to be tough for indian football unless some one steps up to fill his shoes,
I met Chettri once as a kid, not only a great footballer, he is a great human. He is very charismatic.
He is the Waisali Surevi of football.
He's carried Indian Football since the last 2 decades

I remember when he signed for sporting CP, it didn't work out well but I think it was a mix of not being given a chance and just struggling to adapt

Hey Zealand, it would be great to see some coverage on the situation regarding professional soccer in Indianapolis. The team that built the sport in the city is about to be ostracized by the local government in favor of a new MLS ownership group, in a situation that threatens to end the pursuit of the sport in Indiana altogether. Just a suggestion, looking forward to more Zealandism!
I think he made a video about it before
STOP REFERENCING CRICKET PLEASE DONT SWITCH UP ON US
Also where’s the background
As much as I must salute you for making a tribute to Sunil Chetri but i must admit that you made pretty big hyperbolic comments.
1. India being a big country with more than the double the population of whole of Europe, there are many big pockets where football is pretty popular and in some places more popular than cricket.
2.The administrators running the game are terrible and the marketing guys even more so. Even a regional game like Kabaddi has better marketing for their games.
3. Indian team in the recent past has not given a 'we can also win moments' like the USA beating Pakistan in t20. The major reason Cricket developed the following that it has was the winning of World Cup in 1983.
4. The domination of North Indian regions portrayed as the only nationally newsworthy region. The Hindi language media houses and the English ones based out of Delhi are also the culprits. These guys do not care a bit about any other sport other than cricket. Regional and provincial news channels of the south and east are much better in this aspect. Football is given its due place it deserves

You’re pretending like he didn’t try and move to QPR…
Also are you suggesting all prem players do not care about football?
@@robbiestrong6398 I'd bet when he was idk 10 years old he never saw a move to an English club. While kids from more supportive countries in regards of football have that hope, this guy, he didn't even know about those things. Until Bhutia played for Bury, no Indian player ever hoped to reaching Europe since the 60s, and the only other player that was good enough was him. He came from times where the national team participated in red dust, no grass in the stadiums, although I don't agree with the op I understand his reasoning.
