"Come to My Window" is easily one of the best songs of the '90s. Melissa's voice conveys longing and urgency. It's a classic in spite of its No.25 peak on the Hot 100. I remember buying the album "Yes I Am" in 1994 and listening to it over and over again. Melissa Etheridge, we love you!
Ms Melissa... You have been one of my biggest idols since I was a young child of the 80s-90s. Come to my Window is one of my all time favorite songs of yours. I will listen to it alot. It got me out of a lot of depression bouts. I had the tape.. As a deaf child, I would blast your tape and just read along on the lyrics. Every song on that tape.. I knew I was different even as a young child. I knew. If you only knew what you have done for me.... This song and Yes I am... has not just one meaning for me... It has several. I wanted to know who I am. I wanted my real self to come to that window in my mind. It took nearly 35 years to figure out just who I am. I am blessed to know your music. Thank you for always being a light for us.. for so many of us. I don't think you know just how big of an impact you are in the life of anyone.. straight, gay, bi, pansexual.. Whatever. You have done so much for us. Thank you.

I am in love with that song "come to my window" because it conveys a passion and a longing for someone. I felt this way for the man I love. My favorite part is when you sing- "I would dial the number just to listen to your breath- and I would stand inside my hell and hold the hand of death- you don't know how far I'd go to ease this precious ache- (Melissa pure passion- represents to me the fiery passion and the the guts it takes to get the love I so desired, the closeness I longed for) I'm a singer songwriter and I was so inspired by your work!!! This song described my lover Lisa and myself when it originally came out. We were forbidden to be with each other back then. But she would come to my window, and we would still be together. Often by the light of the moon could I see her outside my window, and my heart would melt. Malissa started out playing in Long Beach Ca. Lisa saw her perform. This was definitely our song. Deep roots with this song. It took a while, but our love survived and we ended up together at last.

You inspire me to accept who he is and what he's doing and not to let myself be dragged down with it. When I was in college in the 90s there was a time when my close friends dropped out and I was very lonely. Music was my savior. It helped me express the feelings i was burying. It was Cathartic. Come to my Window was a song I listened to a lot. It felt like the loneliness eased a bit. I had you, Tori Amos, Sarah Mclachlan, and Ani DiFranco playing on repeat.
Melissa, This is one of my favorite songs of all time! I saw you open for Sting as a surprise guest and you sang this song. Even today, when I hear the song come on the radio it takes me right back to that moment in time. Thank you for so much amazing, meaningful music. ❤

For me, Come to My Window always felt like a longing for someone, a partner, to feel and show the same kind of passion and devotion that the singer feels. Like, the singer knows she would do anything to be with her partner and is not afraid to show it, but there is a longing for the partner to make the effort to show the same.

You had mentioned in another interview someplace about the time in your life and how this song affected you and I know a lot of us out there see it as an opportunity to to verbalize out who we want to love him and even though some people don't understand we're still going to love who we want to love anyways and and I'm sure most of us would have had a situation where we wish a person we wanted to care for wouldn't meet us halfway and then it's just just come and talk to me and and things will be okay it's a powerful song and everytime we all sing it with you and the concert it just is awesome

Melissa- in 1995 in Illinois my then boyfriend told me he loved me at your concert while we danced to you singing Come To My Window. We married soon after and had children over the years. We were married for 25 years and just a little over two weeks ago he unexpectedly passed away while he was states away from me on a month long work trip. The other night I dreamt he was at my bedroom window and I was trying to get to him … I was pressing my body so hard into the screen just to reach him. Just days ago I realized what this all meant.. how he was reaching out to me , to tell me he loved me just one more time. This song means EVERYTHING to me .
This song I heard in college opened my eyes to true love for me. Where I come from women don't love and be with women. I thought the window was a way of hiding their sexual dealing. But It Did open my eyes to a different way of life.

One of my favorite films is Cinema Paradiso. A young suitor goes to the woman he loves’ house and stands forlornly pining under her window every night for months and months. He is waiting for her to open the window, beckon him in, flash the light...something…t’s a beautiful scene when she finally sees that he means it…and I guess it makes me think of Baz Luhrman’s Romeo & Juliet, too.

As for myself i just loved all of your music. I saw you at Mesa Amphitheater; and then up at Sedona Jass Fest with Jackson Browne. Ovcourse, like every one of your shows many of the ladies were pelting you with bra's and panties. I have never seen a bad ME show!!! First time was in 1989 at Celebrity Theatre. For me, as a young gay man in the 90s, the song meant that true love was found by two young lovers; love no matter what others think. The fight was about the start of being together by seeing each other one secret night regardless of any prejudice.
