I've been watching Ballard since 10/20 and, with his instructions alone from online, I range from -4 to +3 on any given round. I am very grateful for his incisive education, and to be playing at such a standard for being 50+ yrs and otherwise self-taught.
Everything on UA-cam seems so easy but when you tried it on the range on your own it never works out and you are back to your old habits. I tried this lag where my wrist are cocked the the opposite way and GOD DAMN.......IT WORKED!!! Best tutorial video EVER! Never hit my irons strait and father then I just did!
I used to be a very good golfer, and the feelings he is describing in this video are exactly they way my swing used to feel. He is giving top notch advice.
Man, that link to the knuckle dragger drill was amazing… For some reason when I stare at a golf ball I couldn’t hold a lag… I was literally just about to quick golf and say it wasn’t for me until I came across that video…. Now I have lag. Thank You for what you do.
Dude you are the man! I watched and learned from your slicing video. I followed it to the tee. I was shooting in the high 90s mid 80s. Last week I played 5 rounds scored in the 70's all 5 rounds and i don't slice the ball no more all by turn my wrist over
reals vs feels drills are so useful. I will probably get into the 70's in short order once i practice my short game some. i hear it helps! thank you for what you do. great bits of info!
Man, thankyou for being here! I had been getting stuck and now after watching your videos i am getting slotted and hitting it way better. I've had in person lessons but yours were the ones that actually helped!
Amazing. Exactly my biggest swing fault. The hit impulse at the top - casting. Thanks Clay, another great drill which is why I subscribe to the system.
Good tip, thanks, IMO the key is "loose wrists"; using your body to swing the arms up and letting the change-of-direction set the wrists. If your arms/wrists are tight it won't work, and if you try to hit with your upper body your arms/wrists will be tight.
OMG. I have been to the driving range all week long. I’m a beginner and for the life of me kept tightening up my wrists and upper body. I hit all of my clubs and I kept fatting the balls or shanking them. I’m always HITTING the ball. I’m going to try this after work.
if you're hitting from the top it's because you're trying to hit the ball. I've found it helpful to pretend like the ball is further back (not forward) and then to catch the actual ball on the way up from the swing
Hi Clay, can you please explain wrist movements/sensations? I feel like/its comfortable for me to want to roll my wrists and open the face on the backswing, and then roll my wrists the other way and close the face as i release past the ball.i feel like i need to roll my wrists for the throwing motion, but im confused if this is what i should be doing, and if so, how so with the short backswing drill.
the "early set" is an interesting one. it is widely accepted across the teaching profession that the wrists should not cock until the club is parallel to the target line, and this is correct. the only problem is that we are then told to hinge the wrists up, which is totally incorrect. and, some coaches are now realising this. however the way we are told to get the club into the parallel to the target line position -rotate the arms and body together- is totally incorrect, also. bill mehlhorn hits the nail on the head in his rare and audio interrupted video when he demonstrates his left hand drill and talks about the natural striking mechanisms- and, it is the natural striking mechanisms that eminent developmental psychologist: jean piaget, based his research upon- and, when the natural striking mechanism takes effect the left wrist can't cock until the club is in the parallel to the target line position. it is at this point that the heel pad of the left hand is pressing directly down on the club. when a player uncocks from the top it is usually because they have a superficial wrist cock and have hinged their wrists up very early in the backswing, as you say.
Hi Clay. Great video. Am Canadian, so it will be months before I can try some of these ideas outside. But I can work on some things until then. Naturally, hit a draw (am lefty). When not wearing a golf glove, my two middle left fingers form calus. On my right hand, calus forms on 3 and 4 ( pinky) fingers when not using a glove. Use a 10 finger grip. So that is my finger wear pattern for golf. When you hit a rescue shot to say stay with low ball flight to avoid a tree branch (half bank swing - low follow thru), how do you play a rescue shot? Was thinking this exercise is like a rescue shot, but I have to coordinate weight shift/pressure move - as you show in this video I think. Thanks.
Hey Clay. Like your videos as always. Something I discovered in my practice today. On the backswing, I purposely tried to lower my left shoulder in my set during the backswing and I felt it allowed me to set the club at the top easier and I was able to start down with an inside-out path with a draw and better ball contact. Is there any MERIT to make sure to push down the left shoulder at the start (1st 30% of the backswing) ??????
@@TopSpeedGolf Thanks Clay. That was indeed what was happening, causing me to lift out of my posture during my back swing. I still do have trouble really setting the arm/wrist position at the top of the backswing be though... Even after watching some of your vids about that. Just down to my flexibility maybe. Or Maybe I should go even slower in my backswing to try to find it. Now though I have issues with early release/timing and sometimes hitting too fat because of it. Fix one thing then another thing is impacted hahahaha.
Clay, I notice when you do your weight shift, your head stays in the general area. I feel like when I think about shifting my weight fwd or towards the target my head moves with my body and promotes the casting motion. Is there something you think about or train your body to do that allows you to shift your weight pressure but stay over the ball?
Hitting the ball well but seem to hit my clubs really high. Goes good distance still just high. Need help getting that good release. I also cant get that extension I need
Great drill, but at 3:10 you show yourself doing the drill....which doesn't look at all like the drill you are describing. Should we do as described or as seen?
What I describe is what you want to feel which are exaggerations. What you see is what you hope to achieve. If you actually over do it then ease off of it but I typically don't see that.

Watch your back Clay, there's going to be lots of pros looking for you! I reckon you've just given away the secret of golf. Absolutely superb.
Haha 😂 Thanks, Anthony!

This is awesome stuff. I always get a blister on my index finger trail hand. The energy must be coming from there
Glad it helped! Play well!

Love that smooth swing of yours. It's amazing how far you that ball.
Thanks 👍

Thanks for the wrist setting drill. Something to work on during Christmas break.
You bet!
Brilliant stuff. Really subtle and deep.
Thanks!
Thanks coach. Knee recovering still. January starts hard training. I can do this drill.
You got this!

You're welcome

Great video as always Clay. Can you do a review of your Ping Irons?
Thanks! I don't have any plans to make a review for the irons but they are pretty good. I'd recommend getting professionally fit.

Yeah, that sounds good. You may have been getting the shoulders too level at the top before and coming out of your posture. Play well!

hmm probably why I have blisters there... haha
My only question is who are the 12 "knuckle draggers" who hit thumbs down?
Haha! 😂😂😂 It's a tough and fruitless adventure to please them all!
Fleetwood takes these fingers off even at points his thumbs actually off the club
The roof on the out building in the background needs a good replacing!
Great observation!
Clay, can you stop with this preview crap. Finish the session properly or you will lose my subscription and may be others!!
