"Extremism"... *sigh* can't help but feel people ought to be way more uncomfortable with this word. It really is the trendy new label to not say the bad thing out loud with, much like communist before it, or savage before that. Does it really not simply boil down to, far too often to not be practically equivalent, a simple idea of otherhood? I dunno, maybe you have to know what it's like to be oppressed by a calm person, before you get how scary it is to have a word like that bandied about without any respect for its power in doing so.

@@MrLtia1234 don't be blatantly twisty, I wasn't suggesting it's a "new phrase" at all. All of the words that have got politically weaponized existed long before. Making up a brand new word wouldn't work nearly as well as using one that's already in circulation. What's changed, all that's changed, is people jumping on it as the new one after the next-older one got worn out. You don't need to provide a list of examples because there were ALWAYS a list of examples. That's not new either. It's just that some of the things on those would-be lists wouldn't have been classified as 'extremism' before, but are now.

I don't think UK politics works like that. They aren't all arguing in a attempt to push through their political vision in a straightforward manner. They are arguing as a diversion in order to push through whatever their donor wants. It's complicated of course, but we live in a representative democracy where the rich are the ones being represented.

the only problem with this argument, which is absolutely correct of course, is that a proportion of politicians very likely didnt get into politics to serve the wider public interest, but got into politics simply to serve themselves.
I feel like this is one of the great problems of our time, weeding out the imposters and bad actors. Unfortunately, in addition to so many people clearly being easy to fool, there are endless organisations, businesses and individuals who gain so much from never having them see the light.

My favourite analogy is to think of the shadow cast by a cylinder. Hold it one way and the shadow is a circle. Hold it another way and the shadow is a rectangle. So how can something have the characteristics of both a circle and a rectangle, which are totally different shapes? That's sort of the same way an electron can have the characteristics of both a particle and a wave at the same time - it just depends how you look at it.
