Growing up, Justin Welby thought his home life was normal. It wasn't until he was a teenager that he realised being brought up by an abusive, alcoholic father was anything but. He found faith and the love of God as a student at Cambridge, bringing with it a sense of peace and security. He graduated and then spent 11 years working in the oil industry.
From such unlikely beginnings, Justin Welby’s faith became his life. He was ordained a priest in 1993 and has been the Archbishop of Canterbury since 2013. He tells James about his struggles growing up with an alcoholic father and why he speaks out on political issues like the Rwanda Bill.

I'm not a religious person but I always like to hear from him. I've always seen Welby as genuine and caring person. Great interview.
Thank you. Was expecting to be irritated by sanctimonious proselytising but was instead fascinated by Welby's openness, honesty, humility and clarity of thought.
Clarity ... apart from believing in Fairies.
I loved the response to the duty of the House of Lords acting as a conscience of the House of Commons. Impressive interview.
Happy Easter everyone.
Happy Easter to you too.
This was a brilliant interview with Archbishop Justin Welby. I only came to know of him as the archbishop who married Harry & Meghan. I was impressed with the emphasis he put on marriage and the weight of the vows. His journey from where he came from, his upbringing, him giving his life to Christ to where he is now. Has he written any books?
I was hoping JOB would ask him about his refusal to meet Rev. Isaac Munther
Pity the elected house is Tory…..! After 14 years I have to say it……! My party and no way will I ever vote Tory again…! As to the Archbishop with full respect to him…., he is a very diplomatic person and I can’t blame him. His past is extraordinarily fascinating and incredibly real, that must have marked his life, then as well as his future life……
Great interview James
I had hoped for a slightly more robust style from JOB. It would have been interesting to hear the Archbishops current opinion on Paula Vennells. Given that he apparently argued for her to be made Bishop of London. I'm sure his support would have been most graciously received by the Sub Postmasters.
That was wonderful. Thank you.
Very interesting interview. Thoroughly enjoyed it. 👍🏻
There is something that doesn’t pass the sniff test with this one..self-deprecation and humility are two entirely different things. Social justice was at the heart of Jesus’s teaching. I do think this Archbishop loves the power and sought it out.
Christ Jesus is not a social justice activist.
He literally was lol. He was the og hippie
@@jonwelsh4354 Well, for start Christ Jesus is, but that aside how is Christ Jesus a 'social justice' activist? Perhaps you should use scripture to demonstrate how social justice activism is at the 'core' of Christ Jesus' teaching.
I can never respect a man who turned his back on his fellow Christians in Gaza. And even refused to meet the head of the Christian church in Gaza, for political reasons.
And he is supposed to be the head of that church
I can never ever respect a man like that.
Agreed, his stance and lack of speaking out on Gaza is reprehensible plus I live near Canterbury and overall the total lack of the churches presence in the city in terms of supporting the homeless etc is really quite uninspiring.Feels like old school upper class boys network full of upper class toffs
The Archbishop of Canterbury is the head of the Anglican (Anglo-Catholic) Church/Communion.
@@jonathandnicholsonI don't fully understand this. Is he the head of the catholics in Britain?
@@bobsmith5441The Pope is head of the Roman Catholic Church. The Archbishop of Canterbury is head of the Anglican Communion.
@@jonathandnicholson thanks for reply. Why did you say Anglican-Catholic in your OC? I don't understand that bit
Please interview Ren Gill! He’s from Brighton. And his story is amazing!
Different world from my working class experience he relied on others who his parents bought. Love his honesty though. Religion can not be verified.
He is so nice in person
James very disappointed why did you not ask him why he refused to meet with the Palestinian Jerusalem priest????
Beautiful interview James with the Archbishop. Happy Easter from New Zealand.
Happy Easter to you too.
U didnt ask him about Gaza.
Why?
The papers are meant to critise governments, not support them!
He's not the government?!
Which papers? 🤔
Please be more specific. 😅
@@mariannehavisham8323 It's not that difficult to work out. The press are meant to be holding people in power to account. He is the ABC and a member of the House of Lords. He doesn't have to be the Prime Minister to be subject to criticism.
@babymonalisa he's still not in government and this interview isn't supporting him, it's simply asking him questions and letting him answer which -that's what an interview IS. I agree the press are supposed to hold people in power (like him) to account and they do. He is subject to HEAPS of criticism!

James O Brian is fantatic. He does his research on his guest and ask probing questions.
He sat down and interviewed a war criminal such as Tony Blair and is applauded.
I was so confused. Took me a tick to realize you meant fantastic and weren't calling him a fanatic and then paying him a compliment. 😁
You should be
On James' show he said that the answers to his questions on this interview were staggering and fascinating. I'm afraid I have heard nothing new, enlightening or interesting here. Sorry James.
its religion, there hasnt been anything new in thousands of years
Oh the irony in that statement.
So glad he admits he talks to an imaginary friend.
Wolf in sheep's clothing.
Did you even bother listening to the interview?
How, exactly?
No he isn't, any one with the spirit can see he's a genuinne Christian...
Patricaoreillu8907 thank you for standing up for the truth. This individual refused to meet up with the Palestinian Pastor and would rather watch and allow the people of Jesus Christ to be killed and massacred. Let’s see how he explains that to him!
@@In_Paradiso58you are joking right , stood and is still standing there watching the descendants of Jesus Christ be killed and massacred and refuses to speak out about it. He would
Rather take the possessions of the world and support Satan then meet his Creator in the hereafter.
The last archbishop of Canterbury
I doubt it. He’ll be the last primus inter pares of the Anglican Communion certainly… but England will get another ABC certainly… Justin’s only a year off retirement
Shame on you James for not bringing up Palestine and Welby abandoning the Christians in their plight. He is a moral coward.
Old Justin Wokeby
Jim seems fascinated with his beard, touching it like he doesn't know where it came from.
2 kidders
Great interview; just looks a little amateur -- Whoever miked that doesn't know how to wrap the cable round the boom and stand so that it's tidy, and also how not to position the mikes so that they're so prominently in shot. Of course, the main problem is wrong mikes for the location, but I guess that the reverberation there prevented more distant miking and those were all that the team had brought with them ...
James best behaviour
James interviewed one of the most senior figures in the country in a tracksuit and trainers.
Scruffy
Justin Welby isnt worth my time. Bye!
Je l’apprécie plus du tout cette évêque
Why, can you explain
Why can you tell me
When Woke met Woke
He is an hypocrite.
Not gonna listen to people that have double standards.

Doesn't that exclude 99.9% of humanity? 🤔
What a silly thing to post.
He is the same as us then
Two of the most misguided fools have a love in.😂

@rahuldahoob. To which school of philosophy do you belong ? The chuck- a -brick-and-run School ?
Not Christian enough for me : Free Palestine ! Lousy shepherd.
Why not, free Palestine from Hamas.
