David’s voice sounds the most intellectual, mysterious, and logical.
Jason’s voice sounds the most reserved, soft-spoken, calm, and introspective. But he can quickly shift his tone to the most intense if he’s mad.
Kirk’s voice sounds the most tough, angry, and arrogant.
(This is just my opinion and how every voice role sounds to me)

Since I've watched Sonic X and the game cutscenes from the 2000s, Jason Griffith is my number 1 voice for Shadow. He brings out the collected, mysterious, smart, stoic, serious, and tough attitude from Shadow while maintaining his introverted, complex, and selfless side. David Humphrey's not bad, but I like his performance in Sonic Heroes better. He's also a good singer. Now for Kirk Thornton. The only positive that I'll say about his vocal performance is that he makes Shadow sound like a ruthless badass. Other than that, he doesn't work as Shadow at all.

nah, Humphrey. He was the only one who wasn't trying to sound a certain way. He was just talking with his normal voice, which meant no forced performances.

Jason Griffith is still the best. David was also amazing and set the bar for how Shadow should sound and emote. Kirk sounds like Krusty the clown doing a shadow impression. He hasn't gotten better, not even in Forces. This Shadow is what people who haven't played Sonic since Sonic 3K thinks how Shadow would act and sound.
Hopefully Jason or David come back.

@@izukumidoriyadeku9846 It's your personal opinion, I prefer David over Jason because he takes Shadow's personality in a different way, David's Shadow is mocky, edgy (but in a cool way) and emotional. Jason's voice sounds better but he can't give the same emotional things which is something David can perfectly give to the Shadow's. Just watch Shadow's death scene in Sonic Adventure 2 and then watch scene from '06 which Shadow says his famous line. Now tell me which one of the actors sound more emotional.
Griffith's voice for Shadow is amazing because he makes Shadow sound dark, edgy, strong, stoic, serious and not to be messed with in an effective way which fits the script for, the game Shadow the Hedgehog, but he also makes him knowing and emotional with hints of caringness for Sonic 06 which *also* fits that script too. His line delivery also sounds natural, like he isn't just reading off the script.
Humphrey's voice for Shadow was incredible because his voice made Shadow sound mysterious, dark, knowing, strong and stoic yet still emotional, caring, thoughtful, somewhat confused, introverted and not too edgy which *perfectly* fit the script for SA2, because the script *also* made Shadow all of the things I've just mentioned. The flaw I have with him though is that some of his lines were delivered somewhat strangely or unnaturally.
Thornton's voice for Shadow is not that great for his character, because his voice makes Shadow sound overly edgy and self-absorbed, which is probably what he was going for however. If this is the case, then he does a good job doing that, however it still does not sound like the voice of Shadow. Thornton succeeds in making Shadow sound dark, edgy and serious yet he also makes Shadow more selfish, and even somewhat goofy, like his edginess is kinda funny, which fits for the scripts of the games. Kinda. Not really. Fits for Boom I guess. (When I say that, I mean the show; I haven't played the games.) However, I mostly blame all of these flaws on the already-written dialogue of Shadow that's already on the script, because the scripts that Thornton has already butcher Shadow's personality in thousands of ways (I'm not gonna say how because I don't want this comment to go on forever lol) but Thornton does a great job at portraying the personality that the scripts want Shadow to have in these plots. Thornton still has flaws in the voice regardless, though, for example: I think he makes the voice too raspy and higher-pitched. Shadow's voice is meant to be deep, mysterious and smooth. In my opinion, Thornton is an amazing voice actor, but not an amazing voice actor *for Shadow.*

I feel like a lot of people crap on Thornton because he’s no “Jason Griffith.” Thornton’s voice actually does work for Shadow in a way. To me, Thornton makes Shadow sound a lot older and wiser, but like you said, the scripts are what really ruin his performance for fans. If given a good script and direction, he could really make his version of Shadow shine.
Hey, maybe he will in Sonic x Shadow Generations, unless they bring back Griffith of course.
Either way, it’s a win/win, would be a shame to lose Thornton before he really got a chance to win fans over though.
Davis Humphrey voicing Shadow in SA2 kinda made Shadow sound depressed and smooth, which is really good for a guy who's depressed over a childhood friend and is willing to blow up the entire for the sake of vengeance.
Jason Griffith is my favorite voice for shadow, he's just so perfect for him, I don't need to say much. favorites is when he voiced Shadow in both Sonic X and Sonic 06.
Kirk Thornton's voice of shadow may not be my favorite, but I highly respect him for what he has done and what he's doing. he seriously does not deserve the hate he gets whatsoever at all. sure he sounds a little rough, and sure his voice makes shadow sound old, but to hate him for that is wrong. I can't imagine how it feels to be hated on that much, and to be honest, his voice isn't even bad, some of you people are just mad that Jason's no longer voicing shadow, comparing the two over and over again, insulting Kirk Thornton over and over again nonstop, it makes me both mad and sad seeing fans treat Kirk Thornton, who has done so much and is still doing, like this. I'm honestly sick and tired of people talking shit about him. he may not be as good as Jason Griffith, but instead of talking shit, at least respect him for what he has done. I honestly think it's a great voice, it has its flaws, yes, but in the end, I truly believe that he's great.

@@dark_nightwing_xl2797 It took a while for Kirk to get his voice for Shadow down though, I agree it got a lot better in Forces. But his first time, as Shadow in Boom, didn't go so well lol. Personally, I like Jason's the most, especially once he got comfortable. Jason's SonicX Shadow was a bit funky at first. David nailed his Shadow voice first try so skill wise, David is the superior Shadow.

Griffith is my favourite. Humphrey also did a fantastic job. I didn't like Thornton when I first heard him but I do feel he's improved a lot since then and I do really like him now.

Kirk Thornton is great as Shadow but Jason Griffith captured more emotion in the character.
No, Kirk is awful, with Jason being miles better, but David Humphrey gave Shadow MUCH more emotion than either of them.

I find David and Jason to be the best. Although I do somewhat prefer David's take since I feel he gave more of a personality with his lines other than just bruiting, they sound very similar to me. Kirk is...okay.

I'm going with Jason, his Shadow was rough and intimidating, but could also be soft at the same time. David is good for pre-alignment change Shadow, though. Kirk has the right... Type of voice for Shadow, but he's too forceful and his accent is all wrong. He has potential, if he would be allowed to play Shadow as more of the hero/anti-hero he's meant to be, and not the villain that Boom turned him into.
All 3 sound the same in my eye.
Though Kirk did give us this line In Sonic boom:
"Your shoddy craftsmanship brings shame on to all hedgehog kind, and for that, you shall perish!"

Jason Griffith's voice fits so many Sonic Characters. He does an epic take on Shadow and his first voice for Sonic would be PERFECT for Mighty IMO if they were ever to bring him back lol. Not to mention his latest impression of sonic back in SATBK which was great, though there was still A LOT to be desired with the actual quality of his voice acting in that game what with all the voice cracks he has while doing that voice (though for some reason I feel those voice cracks would actually fit Mighty lol)

New Shadow actually sounds like how I original pictured Vegeta to sound like in the saiyan saga in the manga.
David Humphrey originally sounded quite monotone for most SA2. He had a good voice but that was it. He showed a lot more range and emotion towards the end of the game though. Sonic Heroes on the other hand... He was Perfect, like literally PERFECT. Almost as if the character of shadow was created to match his voice in that game. His performance suited the design and personality of shadow as I imagined it should be.
Jason Griffith was also Spectacular as shadow and a great replacement for David Humphrey. He as good as shadow as he was sonic and it amazing how separate his voices were from each other. I honestly wouldn't be able to tell it was the same person doing both voices had I not known otherwise. But the reason I prefer David is because Jason does sound a bit unnatural, like he's whispering loudly when doing his lines. Also when he shout, it always sounds force to me. He is still a excellent choice for Shadow.
Kirk Thornton is a excellent voice actor. But he is miscast as shadow unfortunately, sorry. I will say he improves immensely in Sonic forces though.
Shadow sounds like he's somewhat angry when Kirk Thornton voices him.
That's basically Shadow's character design after Jason stopped voicing Sonic and Shadow. Sonic became lighter hearted but kept the cockiness, Shadow became angry, for no apparent reason. David's Shadow had a spread of emotions, as well as Jason's, especially in Sonic X late S2 and S3 and in Shadow the Hedgehog.
Actually Shadow started to become angrier when Jason started voicing him.

Tornado1994 Definitely the best in terms of cringe. I don't want to "think" Jin from whatever anime that is because his current potrayal is horrid. Just listen to him in the Boom show! Shadow's supposed to be cool but calm and collected, and when provoked, dangerous. Thornton tries way too hard to give that grumpy evil voice and it doesn't work at all. I've heard his Jin voice is good but if that's what's in Free Riders, Generations, and Boom then it isn't what Shadow the Hedgehog should sound like.

He's the voice I grew up with. Unlike the other Shadow actors, Humphrey gave Shadow a personality and some emotion.
-Jason Griffith gave Shadow a good, generic sound, but the problem is he made Shadow sound like a dark, emo, lone wolf type of character and I.... kinda didn't.... like it.
-Kirk Thornton was probably everyone's least favorite Shadow voice. (And.. I kinda agree.) When I heard him in Free Riders, I was... boggled and a little disgusted. But I think Forces is where Thornton's Shadow is at his best. And I wish him the best and to keep improving.

I think Kirk Thornton is trying to sound like the original shadow. He also sounded pretty good in sonic boom rise of lyric, but did a way better job of shadow in the only episode he has so far in the sonic boom tv show. David is still the best though in my book.

Dave Humphrey has the specific voice and tone that really matched Shadow's Character, so he's my favourite.
Jason is probably my favorite English actor for Shadow because that's who I grew up hearing. I adore Humphrey as well because he makes Shadow sound natural. Sadly I don't like Kirk for Shadow, but his Cubot voice is GREAT! :)

I feel like kirks shadow voice hasn't been used to its potential due to him being stuck in the era of bad script writing and vocal direction for certain characters. I feel like if there was more leeway for a more serious/emotional shadow like other takes, he could be better than we think

Jason-My personal favorite voice for Shadow! He made him sound very mysterious, confident, edgy but not too edgy, and badass. He was at his best with in 06 and Black Knight.
David- Definitely a very close 2nd. He made Shadow sound like a mysterious badass, which was perfect for SA2. Definitely brought out the cocky side of Shadow.
Kirk- The only good roles he’s had are Sonic Forces and the Twitter Takeovers but that’s not saying much. Other than that, he comes off really strong and super edgy. I know Shadow can be kinda cruel but he’s not an asshole.
Personally I actually like Kirk Thornton as the voice of Shadow. His elder tone ads more age to Shadow given he's over 50 years old canonically. Granted starting out he put a lot of rasp and edge into Shadows voice but he's really improved a lot since by getting rid of most of the edge and making his voice sound a lot more calm and smoother. It adds more to Shadow's character as a whole. But one thing that some people need to understand it's not always a problem with the VA but the writing they have to deal with. Pontac and Graff really did a number on Shadow's character by making him into the typical edgy stereotype because of his appearance. I can see so much potential in Kirk as Shadow if he was given writing that made people say "This is it! This is Shadow!"
Yes! Kirk does an amazing job at representing the personality of the Shadow in the recent scripts. The thing is, the personality in these scripts is awful, which makes it seem like Shadow's voice is bad. I don't think it's bad, yet I still don't really like the raspy, higher-pitch tone for him though. I think the smoother, deeper voices work better.

Here's what I think:
David Humphrey - Did a decent job and improved a bit in Sonic Heroes, but in my opinion he just doesn't fit that well for Shadow.
Jason Griffith: Hands down the best Shadow voice out of the three (and my second favorite Sonic voice behind Ryan Drummond). His take just fits Shadow perfectly in my opinion and I would love to see him return to the role. It's just too bad that I seem to be in the minority and he has the smallest chance of returning. I just think he did the part so well.
Kirk Thornton: ... No. Just. No. No offense to Thornton, but he *really* does not fit Shadow at all. Simple as that, he sounds completely wrong for the voice of Shadow.

Jason Griffith is the best (he gives Shadow a light sinister/angry tone and keeps the most consistency). Humphrey is 2nd. Thornton needs more consistency, but he has potential, they all do. Also, Thornton doesn’t sound as bad here as he did in Sonic Boom (maybe these lines represent the best of his voice clips?)

My favorite voice actor is David Humphrey
David and Jason are definitely the best voices for Shadow. Kirk doesn’t fit Shadow’s voice, but the only time I kinda liked his Shadow voice was in Sonic Forces

Jason Griffith is my go-to Shadow, but it's great that Sega has kept the voices relatively similar for so long.

Jason is fantastic as shadow, but i feel like he better fits the more over-the-top shadow from shadow the hedgehog or sonic x, but for games like sa2 or even 06, i feel like David has a fantastic voice for it
I personally think that David Humphrey would fit better in Sonic X, Shadow The Hedgehog, and maybe Sonic 06, but Sonic 06 admittedly should belong to either the 4Kids cast or Studiopolis cast due to it being the game that opens up the Sonic Next-Gen.
I'll admit, I never liked Jason Griffith's Sonic performance (he got a bit better by Unleashed/Black Knight), but his Shadow voice sounds like a natural extension of David Humphrey's voice.

Honestly? I like Jason Griffith's voice the most. David Humphrey is okay, but his lines seem a little forced, and he sounds like he has trouble maintaining Shadow's deep voice. Kirk Thornton... I don't like him. He's a good voice actor, but his voice just really doesn't fit Shadow. Griffith's lines sound a bit emotionless at times, but I feel like he's the best one for Shadow. And I'm really impressed with the different voices he can make, considering he also voiced Sonic for a while.
Yeah, Humphrey was great at making Shadow sound sympathetic and emotional, but his voice sounds like it isn't naturally able to fit Shadow's range. I can recall several times when I could swear it broke in the games. Griffith got his voice in the perfect range for Shadow, but was less relatable. There were some moments in Sonic X Season 3 where his voice resembled Sonic a lot, but Season 1's voice was very distinctive and dark; not like Sonic at all. Thornton seems to have the wrong picture of Shadow's character, as his voice doesn't fit Shadz at all.

kirk is terrible. He sounds way too evil as if his intention was to take everyone's soul and make an empire of his own using all the souls he gathered. But that is just my opinion.
