To be honest I miss this Sonic.
Jason gave Sonic such a special touch that I feel like it will never return.
It felt so different, so unique.
He really knew how to convey what Sonic really is with his voice, a free and heroic spirit who knew when to take things seriously, but without losing his characteristic charisma.
This is the Sonic I grew up with.
Not only that but his dialogue always felt natural and believable plus his voice always sounded fitting to me (like “that’s what he should sound like”). Jason had a human-like essence in his performance that no other Sonic VA before or after has even come close to mastering. His version was cocky but also had a caring and compassionate side too.

i think he was originally told to emulate Ryan Drummond, so that's why he started out kinda weak with Sonic X, but he developed his own voice over time

Yeah I seen that in an interview. He was told to try and emulate Ryan, but not copy him completely.
Don’t forget with a little Jaleel to sprinkle on there as well.
To be honest, Jason's "nerdy" Sonic worked really well in those early episodes of Sonic X, especially ones like the cruise episode. His voice was very emotive there. I think he started his emphasizing habit a bit after that, and kinda went downhill a bit until he picked back up around Black Knight.
In Sonic X, he sounds like Angel Dust from Hazbin Hotel and I hate it.
Actually, Jason originally auditioned for the role of Chris, but they cast him as Sonic. He had auditioned for Sonic as well, but they felt his Chris voice was better for Sonic.

@@donathan2933 You can partially blame the writers of the current Sonic for that. Roger is actually a great voice actor and has a good variety in range, but the scripts he's given and how to act them out ruins it all.

Jason is crazy talented and voiced so many characters. He really tuned them by the end. He was so good i didn't even know he was Sonic, shadow, AND jet the Hawk as a kid.
I just thought they sometimes sounded alike but wouldn't have guessed they were the same guy!
Jason is optimal youth-sounding sonic. The voice can be used for silly moments and serious, it goes both ways. His performance of reserved Sonic in Unleashed is a legacy. -

This legend had great talent. He not only voiced the blue blur but also the ultimate life form and sonic's most formal rival in the riders' series Jet. He has improved from that era.

Ryan: The Adventurer - His games are always on incredible adventures and missions

I think Jadon Griffith is my favorite voice actor for the Blue Blur. He makes him sound cool without making him stuck in the 90’s. Roger Craig Smith is good, but makes him seem a little more childish.

it wasn't soon at all, he had the role for almost a decade! At that point he'd been doing it the longest. I liked Jason's later stuff but never feel he all the way "fit" for the role personally.

Damn I miss Jason Griffith voicing Sonic and Shadow. He was one of my favorite VAs next to Ryan Drummond and David Humphrey respectively. I really miss the 4kids cast and the Adventure cast man. I wish Sega would of kept them around instead of hiring new people in 2010, but it is what it is. I don't hate the new cast. I really like them in Sonic Boom, but man it hurts not hearing the old voices in the current games knowing they'll probably never come back, but on the bright side though at least we still have Mike Pollock around so that's good I guess? Who knows maybe if we eventually get that Sonic Adventure remake Sega will considering bringing back the old cast to reprise their roles? We could only hope...
He sounded alright in X, bad in '06, good in Secret Rings and Black Knight, and amazing in Unleashed, at least in my opinion.

A lot of people saying he was at his best in Unleashed and Black Knight, but I really liked him in 06 too. It was pretty off in some points (which I blame the voice direction and the fact that they rushed the game), but I really like that he was a lot more soft spoken and had a really mature nature. For once he didn’t have a high amount of attitude or cockiness, it was still there but much lighter. I know he was originally made to have that 90’s attitude, but I just really grew to like that personality/voice tone for Sonic unlike in the other games, side for Unleashed which was relatively the same.
Personally, I don't think Jason's performance is that much different between Shadow, 06 and Unleashed, Black Knight. I still his Shadow and 06 performance is perfect.

To be fair, it's the scriptwriters fault and sometimes vocal direction. If they gave Roger an actual Sonic script, alongside good vocal direction, maybe he could truly realize his potential as Sonic.

This will always be Sonics voice to me. This is what I grew up with and it just sounds the most natural for his character.
This is hands down the best Sonic voice no matter what you say. He is probably the only voice actor who truely perfected the voice. If they manage to bring Jason back, which everything seems to be pointing too, I will become truly invested in whatever game he is put in

It's a shame that by the time Jason really mastered his Sonic voice, the series had a number of less than stellar games. This is my favorite VA, personally.
Secret Rings, Unleashed and Black Knight were good. Even Shadow and 06 has noticeable qualities. At least, those games had a good writing and voice casting.

@@chao-thereal I know that, I just say this game has the merit of having a very good story, an excellent characterization and a very good voice acting, in particular the 1st best performance of Jason Griffith (Don't be mistaken, I don't say his performances in Shadow and 06 were bad. He was cute and enthusiast in Shadow. In 06, except the too calm side, his acting weren't especially bad).

Roger isn’t that bad of a sonic voice. Though I do prefer Jason by a long shot, the reason why Roger isn’t the greatest is because of the current sonic writing style. It makes sonic seem less like he did back in the early 2000’s and it seems like he can never take anything seriously. But hey that’s just my opinion- lol

Jason’s Sonic voice improved as time went on. He sounded his best in Unleashed, especially in his werehog form where he sounded like an angry version of Goku

I love Roger Craig Smith as a VA, but he's just not Sonic (he's good as Boom Sonic). Jason Griffith started off rocky in the beginning but over time developed into his own take and it became truly the definitive version of Sonic to me. Roger has had nearly double the time to improve his take on the character that Jason did and it just hasn't gotten any better. Granted, I chalk a lot of it up to poor voice direction/writing, but I honestly think it's time for a recast or rehires.

Ryan Drummond will always remain one of my favorite Sonic VAs, grew up on the Adventure series and I can't see any other VA delivering the same amount of corny charm as he did. But after Heroes i felt that they were allowing Sonic as a character to grow up a bit more, he was still energetic and headstrong to some degree, but he cared a lot more and he had some really heartwarming moments when Jason Griffith had the helm. However since Roger Craig Smith took over I feel like Sonic as a character has been in a regression and there's no charm or personality to him anymore beyond the really forced humor and "can-do-anything" attitude. Again I chalk a lot of this up to poor voice direction and abysmal writing. Id like to see what Roger can do with a much better crafted script and more focused direction, but I also don't know what to expect really.

When I play a Sonic game with Roger, I hear Mirage. Everytime I play Apex, I hear Sonic. Is that just me?
i know this is a 2 year old comment, but roger's voice was actually REALLY good in frontiers imo.
I still think it's hilarious how often Jason "talked" to himself since he voiced Sonic, Shadow, AND Jet. He's still my favorite voice for them, and yes, I am totally bias since I was a kid around that time.
To me, this will always be the definitive Sonic voice. Nothing against any of the other voice actors, especially Roger Craig Smith, they all did good jobs too; I really liked Roger's work in the Sonic Boom cartoon.
But to me, Jason Griffith will always be the OG Sonic voice. Nowadays whenever I read Sonic fanfiction, Jason's voice is the one I hear in my head when I read Sonic's dialogue

Just hearing his voice alone, he gives more energy and "magic" to Sonic and whoever else he voices, it's so weird how one guy as a voice of an iconic character can make a game feel amazing. Also I don't know what went on in the Studio but I love Super Sonic's voice in Sonic Riders and Sonic Riders Zero Gravity, it's deep and raspy but not close to the Werehog or Jet because after finding a way to hear the voices crystal clear, Super Sonic shouts "Good!" when a Trick is landed successfully and it's almost robotic or has a deep echo a bit like UI Goku's in DBX2, you can hear a bit of it when landing a trick normally but it still does not sound natural even for a deep voice.

Griffith will always be my favorite Sonic actor. Always. He just has so much range. Not to mention he was amazing with Shadow as well.
One of my favorite lines he delivered was in secret rings against Erazor Dijin. Just before the final boss battle. He delivered lines as Sonic that has a levity to them but you can tell when he's serious about something.
Jason is the one I really got to hear in my childhood because of games like Sonic Rush, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 06, and even when I watched it Sonic Unleashed.

I’m not trying to diss any of the Sonic actors. They’ve all voiced this character greatly. But Jason voiced him PERFECTLY. He brought the charisma, the nuance, and the relatability needed for the character.

Truly has improved the most over any Sonic voice actor, he was so rough in 06 and Sonic X. But by the time Unleashed and Black Knight came out he improved so much and imo his voice acting in those games is the best Sonic has ever sounded.
Sonic X wasn't bad, it's an hybrid of all his actings in games. And in Shadow, he was so cute and innocent. In 06, a little too calme but it's okay. And Secret Rings, Unleashed and Black Knight literally made him badass.
