The NumberPad and per-key RGB backlight are only available on some models of the Strix G16. In North America region currently only the G614JI-XS96 model has them, the other models have 4-zone RGB backlight and no NumberPad.
Also for integrated AMD and Intel mobile chipsets, PCIe tunneling requires the port to be routed through the iGPU, so Thunderbolt 4/USB4 ports are always connected to the iGPU. ASUS SOP is to leave Thunderbolt 4/USB4 off of at least one USB-C DP port to use as the designated direct-to-dGPU DP alt mode port on their gaming laptops. Asus also tends to opt for the PD to be on that port, out of consideration for single-connector solution USB-C monitors with PD on their USB-C ports (such as the _awesome_ new ProArt PA278CGV), meant to be used with USB-C PD+DP alt mode tablets, convertibles, MacBooks, Mac Minis, Zenbooks, and handhelds like the RoG Ally.

I got £800 for my old laptop which was still going strong and im happy with the modest upgrade. It states it comes with 12 month warranty but after registering it its actually 24 months, then for £70 I can get another year for a total of 3 years warranty.

The entire reason for landing on a laptop with a 4060 like this would be to leverage the DLSS 3 / 3.5 improvement gains over a 30 series card. Comparing raw performance with DLSS disabled seems a bit silly to me. Otherwise, great review.

As a DevOps engineer, I require a powerful Intel machine for both work and gaming. I recently tested the G614JV model, equipped with a 13980HX processor, a 4060 RTX GPU, and 32 GB of DDR5 RAM, all displayed on a 1920x1200 16:10 screen. After a two-week trial, I can attest that this device is a beast.
Running on the latest version of Revyos Windows 11, it flawlessly handles all modern games, including Cyberpunk, on their maximum settings. I'm considering the purchase of a Samsung 990 SSD, which I believe would further enhance the system's loading speeds and overall performance.

One problem with a lot of entry/mid range GPU laptops is that they often are coupled with higher end cpus.
No one needs a 7945hx for a 4060, yet people end up paying unnecessarily more, ending up with a heavy gpu bottleneck in most games.
Just like this model you reviewed. 14c i7 for a rtx 4060 mobile is just overk*ll. An i5 would have done the job and cut the price. This way the entry/mid range laptop gpu´s end up in an overpriced bracket duo to non gpu related things.
Thankfully there are still plenty of brands on the market that also offer entry level combinations.
Some laptops just make no sense, at least not for the main purpose of gaming (which in regards to GAMING laptops is most likely the thing). Like combining at ryzen 7 with a rtx 3050. That is probably an offer for someone who mainly runs cpu heavy workloads while running some casual games at times.

    • @doge-of-venice
      @doge-of-venice Рік тому

I'd say it depends on which year's model, which configuration you got, and most importantly your intended use case. I assume you'd use it both for gaming and school work (since it's a discreet gaming laptop) and that your school work wouldn't benefit from the 16:10 aspect ratio screen of this year's model. So, if you got last year's model, it might be a better value than this year's model depending on the specs and whether you got a good deal on it. If that's the case, then the RTX 3070 Ti model is the best bang for your buck (and a better value than thE new model with the RTX 4070). This is in addition to it having enough power to run anything you throw at it for the next (I'd say) five years at least at medium to high settings. If it's the 3070 (plain) model then it's not bad and should run most AAA games smoothly for the next three years (maybe at lowered settings for some; or maybe not, since I don't know the future ofc). I expect the 3060 wouldn't be able to run upcoming AAA games unless you're willing to lower the settings way down for some games, especially since it had only 6 GB of VRAM. This is of course assuming you're not planning on doing anything too CPU-intensive and single-threaded, since last year's AMD CPUs didn't have the best single-core performance; and if that's the case, then you would have been better off getting this year's model with a 13th Gen Intel CPU. And then, the RTX 4060 model is preferable to the 4070 model since the latter is a ripoff. Hopefully you bought smart and you're happy with your purchase. And may it serve you well either ways.

Very important question Jarrod. Was there any loud coil whine during benchmarking games, general use? I've seen a good amount of people complain about it
Also any owners of 2023 g16 specifically would like to know if you have this problem

Should i pick this laptop but with a WQHD 165Hz screen (1350$)
    Or the zephryus g15 rtx 3070 r9-5900h QHD 165hz (1050$)
Considring that my maximum budget is 1050$ but if its actually worth paying 300$ more i would save up more and grab it

Any idea if the laptop will connect to two external displays at the same time? I would like to connect a projector to the HDMI port and an interactive (touchscreen) monitor to one of the Type C ports.

    The G16 with a 4060 isn't far behind the M16 with a 4070 for Davinci tests. That's wild!

Hey Jarrod! Amazing review. I have this laptop, and it's wonderful. I was thinking on how I could overclock my GPU just to get the maximum score on TimeSpy. I'm afraid that i might damage the CPU and GPU if I tamper with the settings. Do you have any thoughts with regards to it? Great video!

Great Video as always :-) . It looks like the ASUS Strix G16 is about 5 db less noisy than Lenovo Pro 5i and Acer Helios Neo in Turbo or Perfomance Mode...
What do you say about his ?? Would be a deciding matter for me ...

Thank you for the list. You do a great job in listing all these specs. Thx.
I am but wondering that for the ASUS you list the loudness of the perfomance mode in the video below "low perfomance" and for the Acer Helios 16 you list the loudness of the quiet mode of its test video below "low perfomance".
Shouldnt the balance mode of the acer and the perfomance mode of the asus be compared because then the asus is clearly the more silent laptop.
As you tested them both and so many notebooks what was your impression regarding loudness for perfomance ??

So are you saying, I can just add a 2tb Evo 980 ssd in the empty slot and it works fine with the factory 500 GB? Because I thought I was limited to 2TB max between both slots.

I was looking at this laptop and i was comparing it with the lenovo legion slim 5 and if you ask me even though i am an Asus fan i would consider the Lenovo. In my country the price difference is almost 250 eur which makes zero sense. They have the same graphic card the same memory, the size everything is the same except for the processor which definitely isn't worth 250 euros more.

Hello! Excellent video!!! I wanted to share something that happens to me, the day before yesterday I acquired this laptop, same processor, 16GB of ram, 1Tb capacity, and an nvidea GTX4050
The issue is that according to the PC, the video card drivers are updated, but when I upload a UA-cam video at 1080p 60fps, I can see that the image is not sharp, in fact, it has some micro vertical lines, and it looks only when there is movement in the image. The laptop is in standard mode and not connected to its charger. I'm new to gaming laptops and I don't know if I should configure any option first. Greetings!

I have some questions: Does the built in battery automatically disconnect when using the power cord?
For how many years do you expect it to run powerful games? Will it support PlayStation 6 and 7 games, for example?

Any explanations for why the 1% Low are so great on this laptop?
Were the drivers unoptimized on laptops tested earlier in the year? Is the 4060 just better in that regard compared to other cards? Is it some specific component of the Strix?

Hey Jarrod, I have noticed that you no longer put the 2022 Legion 5 in your reviews for some reason. Is there any reason why? I own that laptop and want to see how it compares to the latest offerings in the future as well.
