@@Centrifewgiwasn’t market to be the next dead space lol … I think a lot of people come up with that themselves because it sounds similar etc. they never said it was going to be dead space
@MrAjking808 they never specifically said it was supposed to be like dead space, but every publication that covered it said spiritual successor to Dead Space and they never denied it. I mean, when you play it, it's pretty obvious they took Dead Space and tried to do something different with the combat and change the world. The similarities are completely obvious.
@@Centrifewgi wrong .. that’s what people came up with themselves & then end up disappointed, was it something like dead space? Yes but was NOT! Going to be dead space 4 I wasn’t expecting it to be.
I agree about Sam Witwer... his voice work was so incredible here, I was smiling everytime he spoke. And then they take it away after like 2 scenes and give him the "scarry" infected voice. I was more sad about this then one might expect...
I just replayed it again last week for the first time since launch. The entire game feels like a vertical slice. The aesthetics, setting, art-direction, sound design, animations, and underlying lore is all great, but what was missing is fundamental gameplay elements. For a game with such a heavy focus on melee combat launching with only one melee weapon is beyond odd. Combine that with a lack of enemy variety and very simple dodge mechanic left the game feeling hollow. It's a good foundation, and I'm sure Glen put his passion into it. I just wish the game had had another year or two of dev time.
You know the funny part about The Callisto Protocol? There was actually a game that did what it wanted to do gameplay-wise, and knocked it completely out of the park where it failed on nearly every count. That game was called Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and it released back in _2017._ A vulnerable protagonist armed with only one weapon up against horrific enemies in a game focused exclusively on melee-only combat, _and_ set against a story flavored heavily by mental illness? That basically describes both games, and Striking Distance should've seen it and known / done better.
It's just crazy that they legit expected the dodge and telekinesis mechanics to carry the entire game. The guns are such an afterthought that half of them are straight duplicates
its kinda dumb. Its call Callisto. So the entirety of the franchise would revolve around Callisto which obviously made no sense when taking in account the ending. The story was beyond basic
@@ValkinsennI wish I had played Hellblade when it first came out I’m going through it now and I think it’s the perfect way to make a cinematic game. The combat was fairly simple but when you’re not fighting, you have these crazy environment puzzles to conquer. And unfortunately we probably won’t get another Callisto because Glen and others left Striking Distance shortly after release
I really enjoyed this game despite its SEVERE flaws. The world-building and atmosphere were fricken stellar and I adored the art design. Obviously it was a bit janky and played rather clunky, but I still had fun. Was really hoping they could tighten it up and make an amazing sequel
@@Centrifewgi I really like it however it holds a lot of the same problems. The Order looks fantastic but common complaints consist of being too short, a repetitive gameplay loop, bad boss fights, and a major over reliance on QTEs. In a similar way to Callisto, I hear the flaws, I see the flaws, but the ip itself. The story, the characters, THE CONCEPT, has me hooked and sad to see we never got a sequel. That's how I see them, games that never got fully explored because it was a sequels job to do that. (Also you play as a werewolf/vampire hunter in London. Using steam punk syfi guns. Sign me up)
@DemonKingCozar That sounds awesome. We need more werewolf games. Definitely agree that a lot of games have a great concept and premise, but they aren't all that well executed. Still, I'll see about picking The Order 1886 in the future.
i agree.... but probably not for the same reasons..... as for "is it worth playing?", in my opinion, no it's not.. just like callisto protocol it's a stinky turd covered in gold spray paint
Things that could've saved the game: - A big, genuinely varied roster of enemies. - Enemy mutations that are not some toughness increases. - Larger inventory. - Since it's a more melee-centric game compared to the gun-centric Dead Space, then they should've added more melee weapons and even more melee combos. - Ability to upgrade your guard suit once you get it. You only get to upgrade individual elements you get over the game, but not the suit itself. Edit: Also should've added better boss fights...and more bosses in general. Edit 2: The jumpscare at the end from the original DS is superior to the one in the DS remake.
Oh bud, that inventory space was big-time yikes. I agree they should have done pretty much everything you said. Honestly, if they were going to lean into the melee as much as they did, they should have gone a little zanny. Like have abilities where Jacob can shoulder check groups, have ground slam attacks, and a throwaway knife that comes back. They could have done all this and implemented a stamina bar so that you need to choose when the best time to waste ammo or stamina is.
Bossfights: I nearly gave up on the game 9 times during that silly bloody train bossfight... 10, if you count the time I went into anger based cardiac arrest. And: Every time theres a blind corner or verge, you know you're getting another umbilical cord round your neck, again, and again. Oh BTW! See that corner there? Exactly: umbilical time!
I feel like this was like a game that got put out before it was even finished and there was supposed to be a lot more elements to it but they just didn't have the time or the money to do it sad because it could have been a freaking awesome game
I seem to be one of the few people who loved this game and are not afraid to say it 🙂 I took the game for what it was...a short, sweet survival horror romp with great production value. I even platinumed it, one of the few games I bothered to do that. People, when it comes to survival horror, we ate good last year: Callisto Protocol, Dead Space, Resident Evil 4...let's see what the future brings.
@doalwa, you're not alone in loving The Callisto Protocol. I too have enjoyed my time with with it for what it was. Also congratulations on your platinum trophy bruv.
I really hope that Striking Distance Studios and Glenn can get an opportunity for another shot. The game had a lot of promise, but it did fall short. And I hope that we don't see that terrible situation that is very common now by which any studio or creator who fails ONCE is immediately dismantled or fired so that they never get to grow, prove or even redeem themselves. Yet how many BIG studios have released disappointing or failed game after game, and yet continue to get second, third and fourth chances, simply because they have highly profitable IP? It would be a real shame if Krafton after seeing the middling success of Callisto just shut everything down and let the Callisto IP die.
Unfortunately, Glenn Schofield left Striking Distance after Callisto's dismal reception and sales. He working on a new project though, while Striking Distance will continue on forward despite having layoffs. Likely won't be seeing games from the studio with the budget and scale of Callisto any time soon.
the reason this happens is purely financial. You can't have a budget of multi-million dollars and then you release something middling or terrible that doesn't sell. The budget for Callisto was reported to be $130 million. They barely sold 2 million units over the course of 2023. It's not quite as bad as red fall, but that's still a disaster. They lost $10 million after everything was said and done. After something like that happens you don't throw your hands up and go It's okay buddy better luck next time. If I was investing in someone who lost $10 million I wouldn't go all right here's some more money.
@@blueflare3848maybe but are you going to front them the $130 million to try again? They only sold 2 million units. Assuming everyone bought for full price that's 120 million. They lost 10 million dollars on their budget.
Hey so at 11:05 when you talked about the environment and the enemies interacting with it against you and said it doesn't exist at first second third or fourth you may not notice but I realized it's actually there and very present it even gave me insight on how to plan the enemies approach. For example I was running from enemies and I escaped through a path I knew they could not follow but all to my surprise they traveled through cracks in the walls came behind me and blindsided me. After that experience I began testing that mechanic by climbing ladders and watching as the monsters disappeared into vents only to pop out of floor and wall vents in front of my face it was like magic! I then started using the enemies tactics to trace where they would come out of and control my environments! It's a really refreshing mechanic once you utilize it.. it's kind of like playing the game the way it's supposed to be played really brings out the better parts of it.
The reason for the many vent crawls is to hide loading sequences. The game choose to run the game on last gen consoles which still use hdds and they load in stuff slow af. It a technique used in a lot of games like GoW 2018 or last of us 2, execept being better implemented and optimised in these examples.
There is....most of their budget was used on marketing and the deadline they were given (due to most of the money taken up by marketing) was way too short. You can tell from the boss design alone that's what happened......how they used 1 boss for 90% of boss fights, even in the DLC lol. I'm pretty damn sure if they were given a publisher that didn't give them a short deadline and execs who were actually smart with how they spent the money, the game could have been a solid 8.5/10 since the story wasn't horrid, the atmosphere was solid, graphics were really good, and the systems they had in place weren't beyond saving.
i just got done playing through this again after playing through the dead space remake and also dead space 2. i honestly think this is a game that had so much more going for it and then it just had to be dialed way back in the end to get the game out the door. it just had so much promise and unfortunately came up short. im just hoping it gets a chance at a sequel to really live up to what it was meant to be.
@@Centrifewgi if they are going to make a sequel then dani or some random civilian in the post apocalyptic universe ( The warden could in his crazed view just decide to release the biophange to every human settlement after dani proves his crimes in Callisto , this setting up a story with dani trying to minimize the damage and stop the warden or some random civilian trying to survive and find answers)
I got the deluxe edition on pre order last year and was super hyped with the this being the first horror game in the golden trifecta of Callisto-Dead Space-RE4. I ended up getting a refund for this game in Steam as I couldn’t get it to run on my 3080ti back then. Super disappointed with this game and I am glad I got all my money back. Dead Space and RE4 more than made up for this. The more I watch about this game the more I feel justified in returning it the same night. RIP Callisto.
The game has a lot of potential, and I'd love a sequel, but because of how bad it sold and it's poor reception, it's highly unlikely that it'll happen. I feel like the main issue of why it feels so bad is because it was definitely pushed out way too quickly (which they spent most of the $160 million dollar budget on marketing sadly). 3 years of full scale development (not even coding, it usually takes a year or 2 of JUST storyboarding, art design, laying out how game mechanics will work on paper, etc before they even start programming with ACTUAL development...leads and execs just call it all "Development time" because the developers will take the flack if the game does poorly since it makes it seem like they worked 3 years of programming into a game and still failed) is not enough for a game of what they wanted, and you can tell they wanted multiple melee weapons since they focused on it so much but had to cut back as the deadline was drawing near and they couldn't make the animations in time to release it, on top of how they basically reused the same boss over and over due to not having time to make animations for anything else. Such a shame, I really liked its atmosphere and love Dead Space, I'm excited that Dead Space 2 is on the way, but having an extra game like this in the survival horror genre made me excited new ideas would come out, but sadly the gaming industry is ruled by people who only want to pocket as much money as possible rather than letting artists create their art for people's entertainment.
This comment is not only nonsensical but comes out as trying to explain things as if the author knew. So from a dev who actually works in the business. 3 years is an average cycle for a game. Usually the first year us prototyping and creating the art. As with most games the art is fine in the first year. The prototyping will occur during that phase. Games are usually mostly developed in the last 18 months. This game sure was developed in a short time but it aimed at being a AAA when it was a AA game. too much was overspent on the people mostly and yes the promotion. It's not the cycle that was an issue it's the clear lack of direction. Even with one more year of Dev the game would have been average as it lacked identity and a clear concept. That was the main problem. Not schedule.
@@natecoet3291 3 years is the avg now, but there's a reason why more and more games come out unpolished and unoptimized. They need longer, which they don't get when a business wastes all its budget on things like marketing...ESPECIALLY since this was the studios first game as a studio, meaning they couldn't exactly pull old systems from previous titles they've made; 18 months really isn't a very long time for a new company, and I'd wager they had less time than that. As for identity, it *technically* has one, "The next Dead Space", which would work fine considering there's not so much market on the genre besides Resident Evil and what Prey/The Evil Within? I'm sure there's more but I honestly can't tell you many more off the top of my head, it's not nearly as big of a genre as open world RPGs are right now lol. If they put more into the melee combat (more weapons/more move sets/etc) it would have worked really well.
@@natecoet3291incorrect my G. The problems were a lack in both quality and quantity of weapons and too much focus on a single melee weapon with shallow mechanics and a bad dodging system. If the gameplay would have been fine tuned and more fun to play, all it's other short comings would have been more forgiven but it wasn't.
I'd heard callisto protocol was bad, but I got it on a steam sale with the DLC. So I'd played it and was surprised how much fun I had. Internet reviewers have an unwritten rule where they must all agree to the same scores. So I don't let them tell me if a game's bad or not.
I got this game free on PS Plus. I haven’t finished it yet (haven’t really had the motivation to), but overall I would say it’s okay. Not good, but not necessarily bad either. It’s just painfully mid. I think it definitely had potential, but unfortunately it fell a little short. I think if the studio looked at some of the criticisms and avoided the same mistakes, they could make a truly phenomenal game if given the chance.
I am going to do a playthrough of this game on my channel. Personal, I liked this game for what it was. I think part of that was NOT expecting a Dead Space 4. I liked the atmosphere, I liked the main character. The melee centric combat is what stood out. Having the enemy right in your face added to the tension.
Just another very average entry in my favourite yet most industry neglected & botched genre. Horror. Especially sci-fi horror. Both in movies & games, horror seems to have generally sucked for way over 15 years, only with a few "surprise exceptions". I don't even bother with horror movies anymore. A waste of time.
@@ncshurikenhave u seen that new horror movie long legs? Also there is a really cool sci fi horror that’s been in development for a while called Routine! Look it up. It’s unfortunately been in development for years but it’s the only horror game I’m looking forward to. Don’t lose hope!
I really enjoyed it. The sounds ,Gore,Graphics and environment was so good .gameplay became repetitive after awhile but overall,For first play through it ain’t that bad .it’s a new experience especially for the first time you play it
Heard about the launch issues, but played it and beat it now and it played awesome. Great game, freaky as hell and builds up to a great sequel possibly. I hope they make another.
Just completed the game for the first time and i agree on all the negatives you mentioned. I upgraded my start pistol to Boom rounds and could one-shot the Two Head mob one two occasions. One time it only kicked him directly into the second stage. I didn't even consider him a "boss" - just a heavier enemy type, with the expectation to see even bigger ones from there on out .. well ... no. the most annoying thing for me was the stomping mechanic. When there was one corpse close to you, and another monster comes up crawling, the player model will always "auto aim" for the already defeated corpse instead of the one living.. you can turn away from the corpse by 90° and the player will still auto-turn towards that corpse when you stomp. It's way too sticky and dumb, risking you to loose an easy encounter because it stomps the wrong one repeatedly while you get attacked. anyway.. i just bought the DLC. I am big Dead Space fan and i love the atmosphere Scofield is bringing to these games. Superb sound design and light, but as a "veteran" of these types of adventure games many common scripted events where easy to predict: find lots of health = enemies ahead, just picked the codes = enemies spawn, activated a switch and need to backtrack = now enemies will try to jump you on the way back.. stuff like that... Overall, there were 3 moments where the game got me jumpscared good. I'll give it that. :-)
@@Centrifewgi Yes, i knew it wont be perfect from all the bad press it gained during launch so my expecations were low. All the things it managed to get right then exceed my expectation and so it was alright
To be honest this was (and still is) the best Scifi looking game on next gen consoles and i was blown away by the visuals/atmosphere and sound design. People went too harsh on this game but i loved it and never had a problem with combat mechanics. Unfortunately there probably will never be a sequel 😢
"People went too harsh on this game " nop, they werent. the game is massively flawled. its a melee brawler, with an overly simplistic combat that is absurdly repetitive. it doesnt really offer strategies, or a reason to engage enemies besides the fact they are mandatory for progression. and that's before we compare with other action horror games, like resident evil, dead space or even silent hill. if anything, it feels like a prototype for a silent hill in space, done by an american team. completely missing the point of how the melee should feel like the last resort, and desperate. as opposed to a boxing simulator. the melee combat literaly is hit1-3 times, dodge 1-3 times, repeat until enemy is dead. with the eventual "shoot here" pseudo qte. the game is hard coded to not allow the player to really do more than 3-5 hits, before the enemy gains hyper armor to hit you and force you into the "dodge phase". it genuinely feels like some sort of bizarre turn based system.
It’s such a shame this game turned out the way it did. I’m sure if they didn’t rush it and ironed out the rough edges we could’ve had something fairly decent. From what I’ve heard the reason you keep crawling through vents wasn’t to hide a loading screeen, and was instead to connect the different maps because they didn’t have the time to connect them in a believable way. There’s this really cool video you should watch that’s 40 minutes long where some guy did a keep dive into the PUBG connection and games lore. It was super interesting. The story would’ve been a lot better if they kept the game in the same universe as PUBG. I’m sure the game would still have its problems, but at least the story/setting would’ve been more interesting. I know this next part will piss off some people, but I’ll say it anyways. I personally think the game would’ve been better if they had human enemies like Dead Space 3 and had you fighting your way through gangs and prison guards as the place gets overrun. If the combat was a bit less repetitive then being a brawler would work great for humans. You’d also have guards with batons you have to parry and block, and guards with guns. A big chunk of what went wrong with Dead Space 3 is the fact that they simultaneously didn’t go far enough with the Gears of War style shooting, and it clashed too much with the core gameplay. MandaloreGaming said in a video that before guns were treated with a sense of reverence in Dead Space, and you had a rock paper scissors system where Issac can take out Necromorphs, soldiers can take out Issac, and Necromorphs destroy soldiers. They should’ve leaned into that where the guns are LETHAL and require you to really think about each combat encounter and outsmart the enemy. Calisto should’ve done the same where firearms will cut you down as fast as the robot’s weapons do, and the same works against other humans. The mutant zombie things would be enemies you save your ammo for and keep your distance from since they’d be able to crush you. It would’ve added in some much needed enemy variety and set the game apart from its inspiration in a good way. Too bad that didn’t happen. Great video. I hope on the off chance we ever get a sequel they fix these different issues. They also didn’t really take advantage of the fact those zombies can mutate and should’ve given them different forms that force you to change your tactics.
Actually, I think you are on to something with human enemies. Seeing the prison culture and having gangs be a part of the chaos when it unfolds later on in the game would have been great. I think that's a genius idea. Same with the security units because they are so underutilized in the game for such a cool design. I think the game should have also had a bigger emphasis on stealth to conserve ammo for later fights. The biophage could have been creepy had they not thrown them in your face from the get go.
Thanks! I’m really glad you liked my idea. Building on what you said about gang culture they could’ve had a playable prologue/montage where you’re getting accustomed to the prison and can just feel the hostility in the air. They could have a riot that looks like it’s about to get out of hand, only to be swiftly crushed by the mechanical enforcers as a way to show the ONLY thing keeping the prisoners from taring each other apart and overrunning the guards are the mechanized guards and numerous security systems throughout the prison. Then after that gets shut down and the biophages gradually overrun the place you’d see the different gangs staking out territory and brutalizing their enemies. Apparently, there’s one part of the game where it’s implied that a crazed gang/cult overran some guards and took their stuff. This “calm” before the storm could also be used as a way to better introduce Jacob to that guy who helps you by making him your cell mate. There’s so much they could’ve done using the prison as a base to delve into psychology and like you said using the memory transfers to make the game more trippy. With a lot of horror and other games people complain about humans taking away from the experience, but I think that’s mostly because most of the time they’re misused. If done right human enemies can be scary because the thing that makes people so dangerous is the combination of unpredictability and intelligence. Having a mashup of smart yet frail enemies and animalistic enemies that can tank damage would’ve been a great contrast. Plus, multi-faction fighting is a very fun feature that needs to be in more games. What do you think of this? It’s a shame we didn’t get that game.
Also, for the biophage mutations you just need to look at stuff like the Flood and Necromorphs as examples for what they could’ve done. At first they’d be relatively normal, and as the outbreak gets worse you’d see the more crazy forms start to appear. It’s a shame they didn’t take advantage of the fact those things can transform during combat. It would require you to change up your tactics based on what form the creatures take.
@shreksnow1918 I think that they should hire you on as creative lead lol. You have some good ideas I never would have thought of. There is one mention of a violent gang in a room with a ton of security personnel strung up and brutalized, but you never hear about them again though. It's one of those moments where you go, "jesus, what had the intelligence to do that? That's scary af, " and then you learn humans did it lol.
i genuinely feel like no amount of ironing out would make the game sell better, or be better received. as it has a flawled foundation that just does not offer anything for MOST(not all) players. its a melee focused horror game, with a single melee weapon, and a dodgy dodge system that feels very underbaked. the irony is, metal gear rising uses the easiest parry system in any game, but even when you learn how to do it, and how easy it is to pull off, you still feel the game being awersome, with lots of possibilities, and combos. here, its a cookie cutter, hit 2-3 times, dodge 1-3 times, hit 2-3 times, and so on. eventually you get a "shot here" prompt before going back to the cycle. until the enemy is dead. and that's the combat for every single enemy, outside of the grabbers, and the robots.
Ive got to be honest i love the game a lot this should've been a movie and it's filled with a lot of jump scares and music as well and you never know what could happen when turning every corner
Great Callisto Protocol video. Definitely agree with ya even though I'm a huge fan of Callisto Protocol.. I've probably finished it over 6x & still find it fun. Not sure why but I enjoy the game plenty still. Definitely a flawed game but one I can't help but like a lot. A fun action horror romp in space bashing zeds will always have its place lol 😆
I like your content you have a real talent and your the only UA-camr I hear who tells truth and speaks on what you love about it instead of just bashing the entire game which I really approve off thank you for spending your time creating this
I just bought this game on steam sale 75% off, $24 CAD ($17.80 USD), best bargain of this year, worth every penny and loving the graphics on my 3080 ti, other than joke stealth mechanic, everything else is great
I think one of the potential problems the game faced on a conceptual and design philosophy level... was their weird ongoing lack of acknowledgement that Dead Space 1 was in fact System Shock 3, to all intents and purposes. It was made at a time when EA had the rights to System Shock, but had done nothing with it... and then Resident Evil 4 came along. It was one of those rare cases where smushing two ideas together truly paid off; take the story concept, plot structure, level progression, art style, general "ghost ship" vibe, and survival/RPG elements of System Shock 2... simplify them a little, bump up the spectacle, and present it like Resident Evil 4. Put simply, Dead Space was at its best when it knew what it was, and understood its own heritage - even if the developers never seemed to admit it. Callisto seemed to be a game that... didn't know its heritage. It seemed to be a game that was trying desperately to prove that Dead Space had been born ex nihilo - that it only had to learn from Dead Space. But by taking this approach, it immediately kicked away its own foundations, leaving only those things that were actually new to Dead Space. Namely, the RE4 action elements, and a reliance upon jump scares and gore.
Great video! I would LOVE a sequel for this game. I thought it was good but, with a few adjustments, it could become something special. Unfortunately, I just don’t think a sequel will happen. Looking forward to Striking Distance’s next game
Late to your video - just have to say I was confused: Your way of cutting, talking and your argumentative points feel so professionell that I was like "Behind the number of subscriptions there are a few zeroes missing". Really really good quality! Keep doing content!
I wonder if the “the scary part is how the enemies get to you” comment is Schofield referring to them constantly jumping out of grates and vents at random. Not that that’s especially groundbreaking, but it does amp up some of the more intense combat encounters
100% agree with everything you said. I loved the vision of The Callisto Protocol that the marketing created in my head, but I loved the gameplay from the Dead Space Remake. Still a fan of Callisto, in some ways I like the story more that that of DS, in spite of it being heavily inspired from the latter. I hope and feel they could redeem themselved with a sequel, but since Glen and other seniors left Striking Distance, sadly, it might just fizzle out...
@@Centrifewgi First off, thanks for all the info you gathered for this video, it really made me understand more of what happened behind the curtain. Regarding another game, we are getting Project Birdseye (interesting premise but the style is too different from that of the base game, we'll see), and they also annouced another AAA in development. I still have hope for this series, but I'm not losing sleep over it :))
@@AndJusticeForMeyou never know maybe he just didn't like the direction it was taking and left. Strangers things have happened in the world of business. Fallout4 has a great parody of that if you find Hubris Comics out in the Southies. Read the email streams between the director and two producer computers lol it is literally this.
Excellent video and extremely thorough. I'll have to check out Riot mode after watching your coverage of it. Seems similar to Resident Evil's Mercenaries mode, or Gears of War 3's Horde mode. Shame it only has one map and missing enemy types. Would have great to have more stages to fight in with different loadouts, environmental hazards, & enemy spawns. I'm a huge fan of these types of modes and still play CoD Cold War's Zombies mode + Alan Wake: American Nightmare, which are also similar in their structure.
Thanks for the kind words! It's really odd to me that they didn't add those missing enemies and the hammer. I feel like it would have been pretty easy to include them with a few additional maps. New upgrades would have been cool as well. But hey, riot mode is pretty fun for a bit.
I will always prefer doors that function as diegetic loading screens over these restrictive canned animation sequences like the vents or the shimmying bits. At least with the doors you don't feel like you're being forced to stand still and watch the process happen, Clockwork Orange-style. Same for the headtraps - hell, with those I even think the game would literally improve if they were simply not in the game. These are minor things, sure, but _man_ did they drag down my opinion of the game. It's such an indicator that seemingly nobody on the team ever questioned or challenged their vision.
comdemned: criminal origins is what The Callisto Protocol should have been the melee combat is more simpler with the emphasis on enemy AI and behaviors to create memorable encounters
If there's a game that needs a remake it's that. Condemned 2 was even better in my opinion and I wish they would get the current max Payne treatment with ramaking both in one package.
I honestly thought it was an 8. I bought it for 40 dollars a few weeks after launch knowing the problems everyone had. Sure, the melee was shallow but it was not difficult in the least. Allot of the complaints i saw were about it being to hard with multiple enemies. I had zero problems with crowds and the game had allot of other stuff going for it. I searched everywhere, got the platinum in around 40 hours. A dollar an hour for a mostly good game isn't that bad anymore considering all the live service, woke, unfinished trash we are given every 3 weeks now
I honestly think this game should have been delayed months in advance or even another year! There is so much they could have added like WAY more enemy variety, side missions, a larger inventory, more weapons, more character/enemy lore etc. it is disappointing it didn't reach the intended sales, i liked the game and i honestly believe most people would not mind if it was another dead space or dead space 4, since that's majority of the reason why people was so hyped to begin with! The combat was kind of weird i admit, human enemies would have been cool! Like Jacob fighting against gang wars as well as the biophage and seeing humans getting slaughtered and infected before your eyes turning into monstrous alien creatures would add even more depth and horror into the game!
After a year finally I have the game and I consider that is a great game. I like the sound, ambient, graphics (even in low looks great) but the mechanic is one of the things that I don't like too much. In my opinion, it's better buy it when there's an offer cause being honest the game doesn't longer ao much.
The game was perfect in my opinion but the major issues are obvious: 1. People like GUNS, Melee Weapons in a Sci-Fi is just weird. 2. Performance Issues. This is in-excusable when you sell a game for $60-$70 your game better be “Perfect” Besides that it was 10/10..
I didn't play it for long before uninstalling. My favorite memory of it is when the tutorial told me to hold back the stick to block, and while I did just that some zombie ran up and took my head off.
I genuinely love the sci fi aesthetic of this game and media like it. Dark and grounded sci fi is my shit. Sci fi stuff that looks and feels like it could exist in the future without trying to look overly futuristic or being too whimsical. And we dont get a lot of games with this aesthetic so when it dropped the ball i was so disappointed. Not only that this game didnt live up to the hype but that other potentially good games with similar settings could get looked over because of this games failure.
I think a majority of people missed the point of this game. It is the ORIGINAL VISION for dead space. Not the “next” dead space. It was the original creators idea for the game that got turned into dead space.
Nah you right they no better then to kill off jacob like that and have that joke post credit scene what a spit to the face but they have to bring jacob back
I really find it difficult to dislike this game. It is core survival. You need to strategise and plan before engaging enemies. This is why the encounters are more spaced out. Split second decisions are important yes however, the behaviour of certain enemies needs to be note. There is a clear distinction between one enemy over two, three, four or, God forbid, five enemies encountered at once. Assessing your environment prior to contact is paramount. The movement and combat is rhythmic, people who say it’s clunky must be bad at the game. True survival horror.
Game definitely seems like it needed more time in development before being released. At least the developers worked on improving the quality of life stuff, finishing the extra content etc. I think I'm going to buy a copy, it seems fun enough, if a bit basic/lacking. Like the lack of melee weapons, in this sci-fi setting a Pneumatic Fist or some kind of sawing tool like a chainsaw or the Steel Saw/Auto Axe from Fallout would fit right in. Heck maybe a wrist-mounted blade like Doomguy's from Doom: Eternal?
Thank you for mentioning that The Callisto Protocol was being marketed as "the next Dead Space." The simps for Callisto Protocol would say, "It's not fair to compare this to Dead Space," but it absolutely was fair since the devs and marketing team were doing just that.
I was so excited for this game that I preordered the collector's edition. But I did that before buying a gaming PC, and not only that but before I got around to buying a PC copy, all the thoughts, opinions, deep dives, etc started to come out. I did not even know that Dead Space remake had a CE, or I would have bought it instead. I was so excited for a new game with Glenn Schofield's name attached to it. What could go wrong? Since then, I've had an xbox copy of the game sealed in plastic sitting on my shelf, untouched (I don't have a Series X, so I'd have to buy a digital copy regardless), and I've been regretting ordering it. But, this video has sort of gotten me into the mindset of buying it if it's on sale for a decent price on Steam. The big alien worm has me intrigued. I will have to temper my expections of "new era Dead Space", but I am looking forward to finally playing it. Great video, very informative. Subbed.
I did actually enjoy Callisto when I got round to playing it recently. It was unfortunate and a little ironic for Striking Distance they were kind of up against an excellent Dead Space remake releasing at the same time
I've finished the game couple times + DLC. I think it had crazy potential and with some small tweaks it could be a great game. I mean balance weapons and enemies. Make two headed boss different each time you encounter him. Make block actually useful, more combos variety with weapons especially with hard attack, it also would be cool to have some variety like some attacks better block some dodge etc. Make a possibility to dodge some enemies (like that thing in the crates etc). The game is crazy good for like first hour or so but after that its getting repetitive like devs decided to finish the game quickly.
Being someone who played this for the first time a couple days ago and finished it yesterday, i thought it was pretty fun and enjoyable. Its never scary, like ever, but the gameplay loop and upgrade stuff is very fun. Combat is so simple but thats what i love. I just got done playing god of war ragnarok and could not wait for that game to be over. I played callisto at the right time to enjoy something so standard but gorgeous to look at. I will say, i hated the vent crawling and shimmying. Sometimes they put too much of that stuff back to back and it killed the pacing for me. I also loved how the curb stomp forces you to engage with the gibbing and looting system! The story is a standard b horror movie plot which i very much enjoyed. Overall, this game is like a whip cream covered chode, its short, flawed, simple, but sweet.
I love how almost everyone universally agrees that the one saving factor this game has was the ending, it gave Jacob not only and end to his redemption arc, but it also proved the villain wrong by having a mere human defeat his "perfect being"... And then the devs were like "hold on, there's a single thing thag isnt ass in the game? Hell no, let's fix that" and proceeded to fuck up the entire ending by taking away the redemption arc and also proving the villain right by retroactively making Jacob lose instead... Just wow... The wasted potential is incredible with this one
Spot-on analysis of TCP. This game has glaring and disappointing issues...yet I played it probably eight times back-to-back. Immersive, beautiful, it is awesome in many ways, and I think the good generally outweighs the bad. It begs for a sequel to fix its problems. Too bad we apparently won't get one. I'd certainly pay for another trip to the Callisto universe. Great video.
After listening to the interview by DanAllenGaming, it’s a shame Krafton didn’t give Striking Distance the time it needed to make the game perfect. Would like to see the cancelled enemies and how it would flow with the story if implemented.
Having played through this game a number of times, I personally feel it doesn't deserve that hate it got. I mean don't get me wrong you could write a book with the number of things wrong with it but I had a great time regardless. It is kind of sad this series will probably never get a sequel as they may have been able to improve upon it and make it something great unfortunately that will most likely not happen. That coupled with the recent news EA has cancelled the Dead Space 2 remake, and effectively killed Dead Space a second time most likely means it will be a long time before we get our Sci-Fi horror fix. Oh well warts and all I am still glad we got both Callisto and the Dead Space Remake.
This game kinds reminds me of Back 4 Blood. It was promoted as a new Dead Space/Left 4 Dead, "Hey, we have a team/guy who worked on L4D/Dead Space!", then the product ends up being mediocre at best, and sub par in general. And the budget, truly a quadruple A game: Crap optimization st launch, mid as freak
Industry vet names really mean nothing at this point. I think people put way too much stock into a single person who worked on a game or games created by thousands of others. Even studio names. Bungie was the holy grail for me, I looked up to them, and now they are a laughing stock.
@@CentrifewgiI think that's the saddest part of all. Big names now don't mean anything at all, Callisto Protocol, B4B, Balan's Wonderworld(land?,whatves) all had big names, with good budgets, everything was there to be good, but flop hard. And the reputation of those named people went down the drain with them
One of the things I love most about Dead space was the monster designs, that's also what dissapointed me most about Callisto, most enemies in Callisto are some sort of boring humanoid mutant and don't differ themselves from each other enough to be interesting or even that scary. Necromorphs on the otherhand straight up feel like a perversion of the human body, twisted flesh reformed and repurposed to make sickening alien like soldiers, and none of the enemy types look like your standard boring humanoid zombie/mutant(ignoring DS3). Of all the horror games i've played none have come close to scaring me as much as Necros do... Also having Callisto be mostly melee focused, lessens the scare factor, in DS you wanted to keep those horrifying amalgams of flesh away from you, you had many tools to do that and melee was a last resort. But in Callisto the fact you can walk up to a group of mutants for a respectful 1v1 while his buddies stand around not acting, just takes the fear away, for me personally at least. It kinda reminds me of a female cat in heat, where all the tomcats surround her, and then politely wait for their turn. But I don't actually completely hate the idea of a melee focused DS horror game, maybe a better way to impliment it would be a more hit and run kiting style while using tools to stun/separate other enemies, instead of just locking you in to long swing animations with passive enemies.
Well said. There is one design I really like with the guys who you first encounter in the sewers that crawl on the ceiling. Their design was pretty inhuman and great.
Ahh I really wanted to like this one seeing how much I enjoyed the original dead space, I think I could deal with a lot of BS, but I just WANTED this to be a shooter and don't care for melee fighting. It makes me interested again that you say here that ranged combat and other means are by now much more of a viable option. I'll definitely keep an eye on it because I was appalled to see it still costs full price and doesn't really come in a "contains all" kind of bundle. This nickle-and-diming DLC and season pass stuff is almost worse than what EA did with DS3
Yeah, full price for this is insane. I'd say it's a solid $30-$40 experience with all the dlc. Ranged combat is a lot more viable, especially on dismemberment mode, but don't get me wrong, you'll still be doing a heaping amount of melee.
Just downloaded the game and i must say im enjoying it so far. Not really sure i get the hate for this game. The graphics alone are really impressive. The combat is a bit of a learning curve i must admit. Also about it not being "Dead Space". No its not, but it is similar in alot of ways. For example: Doom and Quake, different games yet similar. Old school gamers will enjoy this game, give it a try 👍🏾
This was always going to be a game I got on sale. When it launched it really had to make a name for itself with the dead space remake literally around the corner I had to be choosey. Then it came out and what I was seeing was pretty generic looking monster designs, which I feel was one of the strongest thing Dead Space had. Like the first enemy in dead space is an insectoid looking man with scythes for arms and a human face in a noticeable amount of anguish, then there were these things a bunch of cancer riddled dudes... just dudes. That let me down the most. A melee focused dead space could have been cool but the more I saw it just lookde like a watered down "light" version of Dead Space, with all the elements but none of the reason. A Syfy original movie apeing Event horizon. Im still interested and this video did re-peak that interest. Ill see if it goes on sale here in a bit. Thanks for the video!
Devs during Christmas: unlocks all the skins for Deluxe owners. Also Devs during Christmas: break half the skins for Deluxe owners on Steam, EPIC, PS5 and Xbox. Still broken as of Jan 6 2024.
I heard about this around launch, but I had no idea the skins were still broken. That's ridiculous. But at the same time, the reskins of the stock suit aren't that great lol.
I’m sorry. But I loved dead space and because I loved dead space. I was not disappointed with this game like some of you are. I bought dead space when it came out, enjoyed the whole franchise and DLC. Then this came out and it filled the void. I think some of y’all hate too much on this and I genuinely cannot figure out why. The game was perfect. I hope they make a sequel. The Callisto Protocol and DLC ending shook me. It just cannot end like that. The story was amazing.
Interesting. It was exactly the opposite for me. Because I loved Dead Space, I saw how flawed and un-fun Callisto was. I really was looking forward to playing it. The gfx, acting, atmosphere, everything was so right - and then there was the gameplay. It took a heaping dump on the whole game. Still.. interesting we felt opposite b/c of loving Dead Space.
I don't get the hate for this game. I just beat it and loved every moment of it. The graphics, atmosphere, voice acting, sound design were all top notch. Even in the review you said you liked it, but then continued to criticize it...why? Because its the cool thing to do?
You can like something and also critique it, I mean it's literally an analysis video. It has nothing to do with "the cool thing to do". I love Revenge of the Sith, but it's also objectively not a great movie.
Man you kill these , keep it up ! High budget videos let’s go lol I was gunna say do last of us 2 but my god you been busy freind fucking good job ❤️👌🏻

He could have had such a cool arc, but nah.
Seriously!
what? his voice acting was so cheesy and awful...

I just finished days gone, same dude
I just replayed it again last week for the first time since launch.
The entire game feels like a vertical slice. The aesthetics, setting, art-direction, sound design, animations, and underlying lore is all great, but what was missing is fundamental gameplay elements.
For a game with such a heavy focus on melee combat launching with only one melee weapon is beyond odd. Combine that with a lack of enemy variety and very simple dodge mechanic left the game feeling hollow.
It's a good foundation, and I'm sure Glen put his passion into it. I just wish the game had had another year or two of dev time.
Well said! I agree. Having one melee weapon was weird.
Keep your hopes up, I'm with u all the way. I love this game, it deserves a sequel
I'm sure in like 6 years, we'll look back at this game in a same way as The Order 1886
I never played that. Is it worth playing?
@@Centrifewgi You can find it pretty cheap but it's a ps4 exclusive and launch title.
i agree.... but probably not for the same reasons..... as for "is it worth playing?", in my opinion, no it's not.. just like callisto protocol it's a stinky turd covered in gold spray paint
Things that could've saved the game:
- A big, genuinely varied roster of enemies.
I loved the game. It hit the spot for me.
Ain't nothing wrong with that! Glad you enjoyed it.
wow.
Hoping we get a few good releases this year. I wish survival horror was a bigger genre.

I quite enjoyed Days Gone. I just found it to be a little too long for what it was.
Same here, I also liked Days Gone, great game
@Centrifewgi The biggest issue i had with that game was deacon constantly talking to himself out loud on his bike lol
Days gone was awesome. It's still at 92% positive on steam. Nobody can blame biased reviews for that score. Everyone should play that game
@DanielMcGarrity-xs4bu I would do the same thing honestly. Plus wouldn't you be a bit crazy in that situation too
I really hope that Striking Distance Studios and Glenn can get an opportunity for another shot.
Apparently, Striking Distance is going to continue working on games. I'm just not so sure there will be more Callitso.
I agree. I think if they were given the chance to improve and avoid the same mistakes they could make a truly stellar game.
It's pretty sad considering games had perfected hiding loading screens for years without it becoming a tedious slog.
That's a long debunked myth.
I’m not blind to it’s weaknesses , but I still enjoyed it quite a lot.
what weakness?
This game could have been stellar. There is no excuse for the pile of mediocrity we were given.
This wasn’t supposed to be dead space 4 lol

I ended up getting a refund for this game in Steam as I couldn’t get it to run on my 3080ti back then. Super disappointed with this game and I am glad I got all my money back. Dead Space and RE4 more than made up for this. The more I watch about this game the more I feel justified in returning it the same night. RIP Callisto.
PC gaming is hands down the most useless form of gaming by far. Besides maybe mobile
I love sam witwer. Dead space is one of my favorite horror games. So for ME to say that this game was mid is a tragedy beyond measure.
It is not.
Where did you hear that dead space 2 is on the way?

Sounds like you managed to enjoy it despite its many flaws.
@@Centrifewgi Yes, i knew it wont be perfect from all the bad press it gained during launch so my expecations were low.
All the things it managed to get right then exceed my expectation and so it was alright
I think the downfall of this game solely resulted from the combat. The game doesnt know if it wants to be Sekiro or Dead Space
a better way to descrbe it is, silent hill 4 only somehow with a worse combat.
I just recently played this and loved it!
The graphics, the combat, the scavenging.
Completed the game twice now and on my 3rd playthrough!
I remember reading about how it'd be connected to PUBG and honestly it'd be pretty nice and a lot of blank spots behind the story would be filled.

@@RAINLORDV2 and thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!
I just bought this game on steam sale 75% off, $24 CAD ($17.80 USD), best bargain of this year, worth every penny and loving the graphics on my 3080 ti, other than joke stealth mechanic, everything else is great
Nice! It's definitely worth it for that great price. I played this on my series s, so I can only imagine how it looks on a 3080.
Well put!
@@kundenservice3100 that is high praise, thank you!
@@Edgymemes249 I'd be shocked if we get another game.
For their first game, it's a great start, just hope they learn for their next game.

Here's hoping! Thanks for the kind words.
A game that led to Glen Schofield getting booted from his own company is a great start?

Strangers things have happened in the world of business. Fallout4 has a great parody of that if you find Hubris Comics out in the Southies.
Read the email streams between the director and two producer computers lol it is literally this.
Okay, not that great of a great start, didn't know that. thx@@AndJusticeForMe
Actually Resident evil 4's Mercenaries has like like 5 maps
I will always prefer doors that function as diegetic loading screens over these restrictive canned animation sequences like the vents or the shimmying bits. At least with the doors you don't feel like you're being forced to stand still and watch the process happen, Clockwork Orange-style. Same for the headtraps - hell, with those I even think the game would literally improve if they were simply not in the game.
These are minor things, sure, but _man_ did they drag down my opinion of the game. It's such an indicator that seemingly nobody on the team ever questioned or challenged their vision.
Actually quite enjoyed playing this. Not flawless but definitely not bad
Absolutely fantastic video , my dude. You've got yourself a new sub
Appreciate you!
comdemned: criminal origins is what The Callisto Protocol should have been
the melee combat is more simpler with the emphasis on enemy AI and behaviors to create memorable encounters
Man, now that is a game I haven't played in a hot minute. They really did a melee focused horror game better.
If there's a game that needs a remake it's that. Condemned 2 was even better in my opinion and I wish they would get the current max Payne treatment with ramaking both in one package.
Just started the video but I really enjoyed this game don't know why it gets so much hate honestly
Many people who followed it up until launch wanted it to be something it wasn't. But it also has some glaring issues in its design
A dollar an hour for a mostly good game isn't that bad anymore considering all the live service, woke, unfinished trash we are given every 3 weeks now
Got it on Steam for $20.00 with Final Transmission. Enjoyed the game. Solid 7/10. Ran great on 7800x3d 4070ti. No stutters and only crasherd once.
It’s funny watching this after Glenn gave an interview with Dan Allen Gaming explaining what happened during development.
I just finished this game and i loved it for me its 9/10
3/10
Dead Space meets The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay sounds like something that could potentially be amazing on paper if done right.
Fantastic review. Thanks for sharing.
Why shankya very muuch!
I enjoyed it at launch but haven't felt the need to go back to it. Didn't realise it had dlc out, maybe i will give it another go
Might as well!
After a year finally I have the game and I consider that is a great game. I like the sound, ambient, graphics (even in low looks great) but the mechanic is one of the things that I don't like too much. In my opinion, it's better buy it when there's an offer cause being honest the game doesn't longer ao much.
A sale is 100% the way to go.
The game was perfect in my opinion but the major issues are obvious:
1. People like GUNS, Melee Weapons in a Sci-Fi is just weird.
2. Performance Issues. This is in-excusable when you sell a game for $60-$70 your game better be “Perfect”
Besides that it was 10/10..
I didn't play it for long before uninstalling. My favorite memory of it is when the tutorial told me to hold back the stick to block, and while I did just that some zombie ran up and took my head off.
This was a great video and I agreed with everything you said outside the DLC only because I never bothered with any of it.
This is how i can describe the callisto protocol: a good but flawed game with ALOT of potential
Josh "doo-mell"
Great in depth video. I bought it when it was $30 but still haven't played. Figured it was worth that price
Yes, it's definitely worth that price. Hopefully you enjoy it!
Still my favorite game of the year
That's great! No shame in liking what we like.
Heck maybe a wrist-mounted blade like Doomguy's from Doom: Eternal?
the game is good man I don’t understand people who will trash this. it was also produced during covid with a brand new studio
I personally enjoyed the Callisto protocol, it ain't perfect but its an 8/10 for me!
"the right side will always be the first one to go" he says while fighting the right side...
also no - I've killed both sides first.
makes me feel bad i hope they try making another single player story game
I believe they will go on to make more games, just not so sure they will be connected to Callisto.
@@Centrifewgi 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽 fingers crossed!
I love this game I played it multiple times. Had potential to be great.
Thank you for mentioning that The Callisto Protocol was being marketed as "the next Dead Space."
The simps for Callisto Protocol would say, "It's not fair to compare this to Dead Space," but it absolutely was fair since the devs and marketing team were doing just that.
Even if they didn't market it like that, when you play the game, it's quite obvious they were going for Dead Space.
I've had two head rip off the other side. It's weird because I was shooting the opposite half
I really loved this game
Should of been an instant classic
Subbed.
Thanks, glad to have you, and I'm glad I helped inform you of your potential future purchase.
I wish they would have done all of that. I still find it odd that you only get 1 melee weapon in the main story.
This was an excellent read. "Whip cream covered chode". I love it! Haha
Great Video! Im glad i found your channel. I love videos like this and you did it very well! Take my sub!
I take your sub and counter with my undying gratitude!
Thank you!
After listening to the interview by DanAllenGaming, it’s a shame Krafton didn’t give Striking Distance the time it needed to make the game perfect. Would like to see the cancelled enemies and how it would flow with the story if implemented.
@@wonderbat1618 it's a shame for sure
I don’t think it’s a bad game like so many it’s just not what we thought it would be and ultimately this expectations bring it down, it’s a 7/10 imo.
That's a fair score.
And the reputation of those named people went down the drain with them
@@strikeforce1500 man B4B missed the mark. I played it for a few hours at launch and couldn't stand it. Maybe it's better now?

I just finished it. I thought it was really good.

Might get this on sale
Despite it's flaws I really liked and enjoyed it!
Not worrh the full price perhaps because it's short but pick it up on a sale. 👍👍
@morganborzelli8942 this comment means a lot, thank you! Glad to know I'm doing something right and people, like yourself, are enjoying the content. Also, I'd love to do Last Of Us. Not to use this as a plug, but I have another long form video like this one dropping tomorrow
