  • Today I'm going to guide you on how-to load an ATV onto your truck bed using my very own Can-Am Outlander Max and my Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab. This is a question I very often receive, mainly from new riders, on how to load and transport the ATV. It can be intimidating at first, especially if you've seen the FAIL videos on this platform, however I assure you if you follow my tips in this video it will become easy in no time. I load into a 2007 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab and have to drive up on top of the wheel wells. I like that your ramps have those chains. I use ratchet straps to secure my ramps. I am still amazed every time I see someone load or unload with unsecured ramps. I actually secure to the lower control arms, so there's no suspension movement involved. I did just recently pick up the Kolpin hitch system but haven't used it yet.

      Nice!!! Hope you get your Outlander MAX soon. Since recording this video I now use the Kolpin Lok-it-rite system to secure the rear end of the ATV. I've gone 900 miles round trip and didn't once worry about the quad smashing my rear windshield or falling off on the highway. It's a good buy that you won't regret.

      Been wondering if a cover of that type would interfere with me loading the quad. Thinking I might just do the same but more for aesthetics, with my Kolpin ATV system I no longer worry about shattering my window. Haha. 😅

      Manual states "Once vehicle is climbed, put shift lever to Park. Apply brake lock." So that's why I've been doing it this way but I understand people have different views about how to secure and haul their ATV. Whatever works for each person.

    Good tips on loading and unloading but the strapping needs some tweaking. Theres nothing stopping it from going forward. Also, the strap in the front isn't doing much either. You need 45 degrees angles in tbe direction you are resisting. Its tied well for up and down movement but thats not really the goal here.

    • @SoCalOutlanderATV
      @SoCalOutlanderATV  7 місяців тому

      Good tips. The front is actually how the manufacturer recommends. For the back it recommends through the hitch receiver hole. I don't worry about the rear as much now with the Lok It Rite system.

      @SoCalOutlanderATV
      It might help looking up strapping videos for UTVs on trailers to better understand the concept. You might be using the correct mounting points on the ATV but your strap setup isn't ideal. You need equal and opposite force. For you, the back straps pull the ATV towards the truck cabin, that's fine, but then you need to make sure the front straps pull back towards direction of the tailgate. Your front straps are completely perpendicular to the direction of force you are resisting. Not trying to be mean but that's almost as bad as it could be. Straps need to be inline with the force its resisting. This is like holding a 10lb weight straight out infront of you with arms parallel to the ground vs holding it up straight over your head. Hope that example makes sense.

      I'll agree with you on the rear tie down straps should go through the trailer hitch.
      The chains I would argue over. Even the owner's manual of the ramps states "WARNING! CONNECT SAFETY CHAINS TO SECURE ATTACHMENT POINTS WITHIN THE TRUCK BED ABLE TO WITHSTAND THE PULLING FORCE OF LOADING. THEY MUST ALSO BE TIGHT ENOUGH TO PREVENT THE RAMPS FROM COMING OFF THE VEHICLE BEING LOADED."

    50% right / 50% wrong.... Only due to it not being strapped down at all from moving forward if you hit the brakes hard enough or get in an accident. The strap in the back is connected to the truck in front of the tie down location....

      @SoCalOutlanderATV his comment is absolutely retarded. I've strapped quads like this no issues ever. It moves very little. I literally just had an incident though where someone almost hit me cutting into my lane and I had to slam in the brakes to avoid accident and the quad shifted and smashed my rear window. Always put something between the tires and the front of the box to stop the quad from shifting into the window.
