Even though I'm familiar with the basic masks from LR, it's still good to see you go through each option, Jim. I'll have to say Luminar has nailed it with easy-of-use masking. And to think I struggled so much before trying to master masking in Photoshop! Now with this capability, I have no need for Topaz Mask AI.
thanks for watching Carl and for sure the Skylum team knocked it out of the park with this one - quick and easy and mostly accurate...so I am very pleased and of course it will only improve over time - I appreciate it!
Thanks Jim. Another great effort on your part. I guess a lot of us might figure this out ourselves, but you save us SO much time! Less time (on our part) wrangling image software = More time taking photos (or some other things we may do in life?). Go well, young man.
Compounding the masks is a really good tip, Jim! Thanks for sharing, as I've found that with the imperfect current iteration of the tool I was having to brush in/out a lot of places in the image where the AI mask wasn't perfect. This helps a LOT! Even if I have to brush things now, I'll save a lot of time.😀
Excellent stuff Jim. Masks are so, so important and you've explained the processes very well. This is one of your videos that is a 'Must return to' to get what you've explained 100% nailed in my head. Yep, Deep Dive as much as you can into more masking videos - that would be appreciated mate.
I'm loving these new masking functions. Thanks for showing how to stack them. I especially love how you added, then de-selected the mask on the lake in the first example to remove structure from the lake. Great stuff!
Thank you again Jim for decreasing our learning curve. The two new videos are great help for the new masking tools and options. Especially the AI mask. Keep the deep dives coming as things change. This is a huge update! Can't believe the team is working on all of this while they have a much more important crisis to address.
Wow, Jim ! Another great tutorial !!! Je suis vraiment d'accord avec Paul Freitas ! Oui encore plus de tutos aussi SUBTILES Merci pour ça Bonjour du Danemark où je viens d'arriver à Copenhague ( plus calme que la France )
Awesome presentation Jim, well done. One quick observation, you can stack as many instances of brush/linear/radial/ai on your masks but once you start stacking, you can't seem to go back and move a previous instances of radial and/or linear. Better place it well before you start stacking. Another observation, radial mask provides you with yet another neat alternative to do dodge and burn while waiting for the actual tool ;). Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks for the important tips on stacking to alter the mask, Jim. Very helpful. I am enjoying exploration of the new Mask AI tool in Luminar Neo. One little SNAFU I discovered: Cropping an image first seems to have a negative effect on placement accuracy of the radial gradient mask.
Thanks, Jim. I'm learning to use the intersect function in Lightroom and was glad to see that Neo has basically the same functionality achievability by combining masks.
Very helpful as always, Jim. Skylum has made great strides with this version. Very impressive and useful. I can wait on dodge and burn since there are other ways to do that, but I really need the clone stamp. At that point I can move away from Luminar AI.
I'm 'very' new to masking, so it will possibly be hit & miss, but I'll watch other video's of yours as well Jim! Yes please, as many video's as you can come up with on masking, as I love the tricks & tips you add to your video's! As others have said, I hope Dodge & Burn will eventually be added to Neo, as I tend to use it a fair bit in Luminar Ai.
nice tuto. I hadn't understood we could already add and substract (sky, water... and radial...). great ! just a pity we can't come back later to the radial handles to stretch it.... It would be nice skylum stores the parameters of gradients,... in database for further edit insteda of "bitmap" mask.
Jim…very helpful. I do have a question…when you make the changes to the rocks, doesn’t the viewers eyes tend to go there? There is so much more to look at in the picture.
Thanks much David and yes that is true, which is why I said that this video is not an editing demo but rather a masking demo. I would not add that much structure to the rocks for that reason. Thanks.
Jim: In your videos, when you make local edits, I think I see you first applying the edit (to the whole picture), and then masking it down to the local area. Is there an advantage to that workflow, versus brushing in a local mask first and then applying the edit? Or is it just individual preference? Thx much!
Thank you Jim. One great tutorial. Stupid question: I just subscribed to Neo and when I click on develop, I do not see masking like you show at the end of your video. Am i missing something?
Hey Jim, Absolutely love your videos. I have a question. I keep hearing about background removal AI in Neo, but I can't find it. Is it not included at this point?
Thanks Jim! Super tutorial as always. I do have one question, I noticed you set the adjustment first (100% Stucture) then created the mask. You didn’t go back and then readjust the strength of the structure. Are you able to then dial in the adjustment in the masked area? I’m assuming yes, but I didn’t notice you showing that.
I'm having trouble masking just the main subject in a photo when there are others in the background. Neo wants to mask everybody. Manual masking works, but I need to have edge detection or it takes a very olong time to mask.
I put in a feature request with Skylum to make the Linear Gradient and Radial Gradient editable at any time. This would be functionally equivalent to the way these masks work in Lightroom. The way Skylum has them now means if you click to commit and move on another tool and want to go back and move the Linear or Radial Gradient you cannot, you have to delete and start over.
yes exactly and I agree we need to be able to edit them - but I wanted to point out in this video that you cannot do so in case anyone was confused - thanks Lysander!
@@JimNix I was thinking of the example of "turning on the lights" in photos where there is a line of street lamps. In LR this is easy. Being able to copy move and resize the radial is important.
Too bad one had to guess how to use these trolls since they're is no manual. There's a lot more this can do that you didn't cover. Unfortunately, everyone is going to spend hours guessing these features.
Wow, Jim ! Another great tutorial. Extremely useful on how to stack and modify masks. Do I want more deep diving into masking in Neo ? Yes !!!
thanks so much Paul, I appreciate it!
Once again a great tutorial on masking - now it makes sense -anxious to now watch your other masking videos

Great video Jim and finally we have those linear and radial gradients lot similar to what we used to have with Lightroom etc.
thanks for watching Pappu!
Great tip on "Stack & Subtract" with AI mask.....many thanks for this.
I'm TOTALLY going to call it Stack and Subtract, that's brilliant! Thanks for watching, too!

thanks much Sandra and yes that tool will come in handy for sure 👍🏻
Thank you, Jim. Yes, I would like to learn more about Masking in Neo.

Thanks much Bob and yes I am aware of that snafu, another viewer told me about it and they reported it, so Skylum is aware. Thanks.
I have observed similar issues when using Neo as a plugins. It is a bit counter intuitive but because of that, I do the cropping in the end.
@@fjperras good approach

thanks for watching Rick and more coming soon!
With the new release of Neo I would suggest you do a combination of masking and overlay. Things have improved in capability and simplicity

It's preference. I like to see it first and then mask it in. Doesn't impact the outcome.
Thank you Jim. One great tutorial. Stupid question: I just subscribed to Neo and when I click on develop, I do not see masking like you show at the end of your video. Am i missing something?
If you are using Develop on a raw file, it is called Develop Raw and there is no masking. But on subsequent uses of Develop, it is maskable. Thanks.
Hey Jim, Absolutely love your videos. I have a question. I keep hearing about background removal AI in Neo, but I can't find it. Is it not included at this point?

thanks Pete and yes once the mask is in place you can still move the slider to adjust the effect
Great vid. A question tho. I have a photo of hummingbird on a feeder where I want use mask AI to mask the bird. Can this be done with AI?
I'm having trouble masking just the main subject in a photo when there are others in the background. Neo wants to mask everybody. Manual masking works, but I need to have edge detection or it takes a very olong time to mask.
A good tutorial but unfortunately there's no square mask. I'm doing architecture and I need to lower the exposure on just the windows.
Thanks and yeah, no square mask. You could try a luminosity mask or object mask to isolate the windows. That might work.
@@JimNix There is no luminosity mask tool.

It does not have LM at this time but it is supposed to be added in the future, just no firm dates yet. thanks
When I activate the AI mask function, it takes 8 minutes to analyse the image.
Is it that slow for everyone else?
Wow that seems really slow. Depending on the image, it is slow for me sometimes, but never like that.

How do you cut out images so can be used as assets?.
You can't do that at this time but they are adding a tool to allow you to replace the background on a portrait. That is coming pretty soon I think.

I think I'm missing your reference here, sorry.
Its a memory hog so need to upgrade ram to 32 gig.
More memory is better for any app for sure.
