New Yarmouth NYE/HM Jamaica Rum review (guest starring Wray and Nephew)

  • A year ago today I started a channel and did an off-the-cuff little review of Wray and Nephew Overproof Rum ( • Wray & Nephew White Ov... ), a cultural icon and stunning value offering made at the still-obscure little New Yarmouth distillery in the Clarendon parish of Jamaica. Since then that video's been viewed just over 11,000 times and my channel's been subscribed nearly 500 times (as I write this). Holy crap, y'all. Thanks, and if you're watching this, you are awesome.
I wanted to do something fun to celebrate that May 1 anniversary, and happily my pal Matt (u/TangentialTinkerer) had sent me a sample that might do the job: high-ester unaged pot still rum from that same New Yarmouth distillery, i.e. the stuff that's at the heart of the W&N blend, as bottled by Fine Drams in collaboration with a bunch of Reddit rum nerds. Stats:
New Yarmouth NYE/HM Jamaica Rum (Fine Drams/Aficionados, bottled around 2020; pot distilled, 585 g/hLaa of esters; 69% ABV), 88+/100
NYE/HM is by no means as funky as New Yarmouth can go - it's kind of in the middle of the marque range (see cocktailwonk.c...) - but on the Tigermilk to Dark Magus funk scale it scores pretty high. What was shocking to me about this stuff, especially on the palate and especially with water, is how approachable (dessert-like, even!) it gets. Think Innervisions-era Stevie, if you will ( • Too High ): funky yet mercilessly catchy all at once.
Then, of course, I had to compare it against that same old Wray and Nephew blend. Which is worth a bottle of this NYE/HM all by itself, incidentally: all of a sudden you can go back to the classic and tell which parts are doing what. Maybe the key to W&N is less that New Yarmouth's column distillate is so good (although it's certainly not holding the stuff back) than that the pot distillate is just so darn well-sorted and civil.

Thanks for posting, really enjoyed your review. I also got a bottle of it from Fine Drams and found it interesting to taste alongside the Grand Arome (another Aficionados). Totally got what you meant about it being a vegetal funk which I found surprising given that the standard Wray and Nephew gives a lot of sweetness (overripe banana etc). Needless to say, I won't be subbing these in for each other but I did make a Mai Tai with both and what a funk bomb that was.

A HM/Wray and Ting split base sounds like the stuff Ting was made for. :D
      Thanks for watching/commenting!!

What a channel anniversary ! We adore what you do as usual (i'm not ashamed). What do you think about making a silly video on home blending ? (with marrying distillates before end of course). Also think the fact that W&N is made by column is key to it's identity. Probably not the case here but some canes seem to be 'more suited' to columns sometimes, espacially in the fact that it gives it more signature in some of these cases (which is not a popular opinion right?). I know i know i'm an agricole-head ^^ Take care & Cheers

Thanks! Yeah, the humble column still is underrated. No idea what they're using at New Yarmouth, but the fact that W&N feels (to my palate) so much more seamless than something like Probitas suggests either some really good column stuff or, as I suggest, some pot distillate that's ready to play with it (or both).
And I've been toying around with some ideas for blending rums, actually! (God as my witness, arrack and cane juice-based clairin are actually pretty good partners...)

I'm not sure! Some of the New Yarmouth marque codes have been worked out - see cocktailwonk.com/rum-marques - but not all of them.

are you going to buy the new Hampden Endemic Bird series rums ? they are way over priced and I will probably skip them. Velier and Luca Gargano are now just putting art label rums out at over twice the price they should be . It's now targeting whisky collector crowd that will pay any thing

I'm honestly kind of happy that Hampden is putting out a bunch of OWH and stuff for the collectors to chase after while the rest of us enjoy our Great House. Good play on their part.
(And no, I couldn't find a bottle even if I really wanted to.)
