Two Speys (Trutina, Fumare) From the Scotch Malt Whisky Distillery Named "The Speyside Distillery"
It's the most confusingly named distillery in Scotland: The Speyside, a small, recent, rather picturesque little distillery some 25 klicks northeast of Dalwhinnie and (so far as I can tell) not technically in the Speyside region proper (albeit still in Badenoch/Strathspey). It's an Abbott and Costello routine waiting to happen, but it's also potentially an opportunity for the savvy malt buyer: smallish stills, dunnage warehouses, and - under the "Spey" name - some of the cheapest cask strength official bottlings currently available at the online retailers. They seemed worth a shot, so I grabbed two:
- The Spey "Trutina" Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Batch No. 3 (Speyside Distillery; NAS, aged in ex-bourbon, 1500 bottles released circa 2020; unchillfiltered, no coloring; 59.1% ABV), 76/100
- The Spey "Fumare" Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Batch No. 3 (Speyside Distillery; NAS, "matured using peated barley," 1500 bottles released circa 2021; unchillfiltered, no coloring; 57.5% ABV), 84/100
The Trutina is just too raw. The spirit itself is super-fruity and pleasant enough, but it simply didn't get sufficient time sideways. Avoid.
The Fumare is a different story. It's still pretty young and there's ultimately not all that much going on, but it nails the peat-and-vanilla formula more than well enough to pass muster. If you're in the market for a cheap peat bomb, this is more civil than a lot of the young unnamed Caol Ila floating around and for fifty euros might be worth the grab... y'know, assuming you never need to explain where it's from.

Moral Musings on Fighting Bourbon Flipping in Ohio, and Why Kant is Bad at Trolley Problems
Переглядів 2877 годин тому
It's been a few months since I first read about proposed legislation by Ohio State Senator Bill DeMora, which tries to combat bourbon flipping by requiring that allocated bottles be opened in-store when sold (www.yahoo.com/news/ohio-bill-require-high-demand-103000158.html ). And ever since, I keep thinking about it. Not because I think it'd work as is (I don't), but the intention - the project ...

I briefly brought it up last week, and it's something I never thought I'd say on the channel: Scotch malt whiskies, at least quite a few of them (and _not_ the big names), are looking more like "different spirits" by the day. And before anything else I feel like I should discuss and justify that a little (but skip to 7:59 or so if you just want the reviews). Today's review features a producer t...

Since so much of this started with a 25% tariff on Scotch whisky back in October '19, it seemed fitting to end this long run of imported spirits with... well, some Scotch. And let's make it fun by featuring some new distilleries. And it's not Ardnamurchan, and it's not Daftmill, and it's not Torabhaig, and it's not Ardnahoe. whisky is and was a bad invest unless someone has already turned over what they had. Prices are in free fall and the auctions reflect it. same thing that happened with first growth Bordeaux almost 20 years ago and current vintages were over $1000 a bottle and when it finally leveled off those same bottles were at $700 to $800 a bottle. There is and has been to much over valuation of whisky and the bottom had to fall out sometime and it did. this is great for the consumer. All of it is nothing but striking while the iron is hot and the iron has majorly cooled off and was never warranted in the first place. Auctions for whisky and rum are crazy cheap now. Example is a current Foursquare ECS 14 year can be had for $60 and same with a Hampden Great House's. Even Springbank and Macallan prices have dropped like a rock. It was all just a scam to see who was willing to overpay for things. Retail has dropped on many brands also. People do eventually get wise and realize that something isn't remotely worth the price. I was paying $85 for Springbank 12 CS 5 years ago and now the U.S. MSRP is $140. It's all greed driven and let's not forget that all of this is just legal liquid dope that has been overly romanticized. FACTS

    From your description, I expected these to be in the 30-35€ range here in Germany (like the Finlaggan, Ileach or Peat's Beast cask strength bottlings) but I'm seeing them around 60€ (maybe down to ~50 on sale). Given that I paid <65€ for the last 3 batches of Laphroaig 10CS, that seems rather silly.

    • @differentspirits4157

      I'm seeing these (and more relevantly the Fumare) around the 40-50 euro range, and I wouldn't and didn't pay more than that. But at that price I don't think it's obviously losing to the Finlaggan crowd. They bring more Islay character and maybe even a bit more complexity, but (at least from my last attempt) they also have the "raw" issue much more than this Fumare does. I suppose they do have the advantage of a less obnoxiously tall bottle! 😅

    Trutina = "balanced" in Latin .............. Fumare = fume,smoke as in peat .............. silly play of name by the distillery, could easily be called by other names : Tromie, Kingussie, Glen Cairngorm, Ben Tromie, Glen Tromie, Loch Tromie, . . . u name it !

    • @differentspirits4157

      Well trutina's a noun and fumare is a verb ("the balance" versus "to (give off) smoke"), so even that doesn't really make sense - I guess they didn't want to release a whisky called "fumus." 🤷

    Your tasting notes for the Trutina are very close to a bunch of Cadenhead bottled hogsheads (around 10 years old) that I bought in a dumb phase of whisky acquisition. No idea how they managed to keep the spirit that raw over those years. There must be people that like that style I suppose. Otherwise why would people sell this? Whisky stew sounds interesting. I’m afraid I poured those down the drain after giving them a bunch of chances over a year, but I still have a couple of candidates.

  • @samueld1

    I had some Trutina once, and it seemed a lot more balanced. It was spirity but not newmakey like you described. Wonder if it was batch variance or just a ton of time and head space in the bottle. The one I had tasted like strawberry, pears, apples, and had a nice white wine adjacent note running through it. Nothing amazing, but it had enough going on with that high ABV to keep me engaged.

    • @differentspirits4157
      @differentspirits4157 13 годин тому

      I mean, I should emphasize that I don't find the Trutina terrible, just unbalanced by the new makey notes. I'd guess this is a batch thing, but who knows - I'll give this a little time and make a note if it comes together.

    Very interesting views. Still trolley problem is an abstract philosophical dilemma, which is meant to be unsolvable as part of sophism. Life in its essence cannot be an abstract situation, it always have context which is always interpreted according to a subjective system of belifes ❤ At that point the question of limiting priviledges for improving conditions of society is always a right thing to do, coz its always improves the lives of priviledged ones as well as part of society.

    “Bringing up the trolley problem… sends the discussion off the rails”… I see what you did there 😂 Also as someone who (let’s just say for the sake of extreme simplicity of a UA-cam comments section) would label their views as a consequentialist, I: 1) am so glad we share an abject contempt for the trolley problem, and 2) always appreciate when Kant’s views are presented in this way because it helps to show people how much closer so-called deontological and consequentialist views really are (or at least can be) and that in most cases the acrimony (or uselessness) of debate has more to do with people engaging in good or bad faith or with intellectual and moral humility or hubris. Even though (again for the sake of extreme simplicity) I will always turn my eye toward what are the immediate and eventual outcomes to build a moral appraisal of something (including not just the obvious outcomes but the collective meaning constructed around those outcomes and their subsequent ripple effects), and for that reason will in situations like this label myself more as a consequentialist, there is more than a healthy overlap with Kantian ethics, ‘Shmantian’ straw figures of deontology be damned…

    • @differentspirits4157

      Thanks for a great comment, and for watching and appreciating! It didn't make the cut of this (already too long) ramble, but there are of course a lot of folks - perhaps yourself included! - who absolutely address the concerns of folks like Anscombe (and myself). But then I'm always left with a question, because of course the term "consequentialism" was invented precisely to define a whole bunch of accounts which _failed_ to address such concerns. In Anscombe's sense, a consequentialist with hard rails (if you accept my phrasing) just isn't a consequentialist. I get that it keeps the ring of an orientation towards results, but it still feels to me like a term that's better left to the side in that case (the same as it just doesn't help much to talk about "deontology" once you've moved beyond Schmant). But how do you feel about bourbon flipping, though? 😁

    • @johnheintz3206
      @johnheintz3206 2 дні тому

      @ I think that would be the hope of any thoughtful interrogation of those fields of thought, is that ultimately ‘deontology’ and now ‘consequentialism’ become dead terms left to the wayside (I mostly will use consequentialism because it has more recognition/intelligibility to some and because it indexes some fundamental orientation to weighing appraisals against their intermediary and eventual effects but in many cases that’s where I kind of leave off), but if those terms end up serving as foils or at least jumping off points for those conversations then maybe they retain some modicum of residual value? Obviously I’m not entirely convinced, but I’m also looking for better shorthand’s that approximate where I land on these things… speaking of dead things though, when it comes to bourbon flipping, I have to admit that if I won the ability to buy something like a PVW23 in a lottery I would probably sell it at auction and get several bottlings from ghost distilleries with the proceedings… read into my ethical frameworks however you will based on that 😂

    Why would the flippers have a lower moral standing than the bourbon enjoyers? Someone will get the consumer surplus in one way or another, I don't see any need for the government to decide who.

    • @differentspirits4157
      @differentspirits4157 2 дні тому

      I don't need to accuse flippers of immorality (although of course their business is illegal, avoids taxation, etc.), because it's not a question of punishing them. They will say that they're performing a service of selling to willing buyers at the actual market value and taking their cut from that, and if that's all and everything you care about then I suppose I don't have much of an argument. But the side effect of what they do is a drain of the normal market supply - facilitated, no doubt, by some on the inside - into a black market dominated by investors and the ultra-rich, one which isn't available to many ordinary customers. If the goal is, as DeMora says, to "give a fair chance" to regular Ohioans (and again, I can't force you to care about that), I can see two ways the black market gets deflated and the supply restored. One is if producers, distributors, and/or retailers _vastly_ bump the shelf prices of these products, sometimes by a factor of ten or more. That has the side effect of regular Ohioans still not having access to them, now because they can't afford them, but you could say it's more "fair" in some sense. The other way is to reduce demand on the black market more directly, which is what DeMora is going for (he's for poisoning the supply, I'm suggesting something targeting whiskey investment). And either way involves modestly stepping on the toes of the flippers and the investors - not because they have a lower moral standing but because of that "fair chance" goal.

    • @fresheFresse

The American oak aged cane juice rum on your honorable mentions list made me think of something you may be interested in trying. Not sure if you're into cocktails at all, but if you are, I'd recommend giving it a try.
