@@Ayomide_mibasically, people would achieve better scores if they try to understand the topic rather than just memorizing it. That's why there's something called Bloom's Cognitive Taxonomy, where "memorizing" is actually the lowest level of a cognitive abilities, students can achieve. For instance, when you try to communicate, the more you learn how to talk, what you are doing now is no longer called memorizing words, right? It's about finally understanding how words work and how conversations happen, so the words will come easily when you're talking.

Your ability to memorise new information and use that information to answer questions logically is a massive part of being smart
True😊😊
The real problem is that the schools tests system puts memorizing tons of information in short periods skills ( which isn't a part of being smart since you I pressured and forced to do it only for the test (not for really learning)) on top of UNDERSTANDING, connecting information and creativity to solve problems skills, making you "learn" things that a machine can do, instead of teach you to be a pensative person
@@migueld.1764 yes it is. You think that you forget whatever you learn after the test which isn’t true. The neurological connections stay which makes it very easy for you to remember information in the future.
Memorising for the short term and long term memorisation is also a level of skill needed to determine your intellectual prowess
@@migueld.1764being able learn something isn't just memorizing stuff it's understanding and with that if u understand it then u will memorize this just shows that u specifically aren't smart. @@chonkboi9088 if your learning math, ela, and science than how are you supposed to test if they learned what's been taught if not giving them test and letting them show what they know. Whoever got the best grade understandood what's been taught, did the test to the best of their ability, and got a good grade. In a math test it's better to test if they understand math by giving them math terms and seeing if they understand them and can tell you what they are and math problems that they need to understand those terms to complete. Science, ELA, Geology, and Social Studies, and some others also can follow that. Gym, Music, Art, and others would be where a paper test isn't as applicable but can still work. A test on what you know about Art and music can still work. In Art you learn about famous artist, lines, the history of art, and how to make art. In music you learn about famous music artist, music notes, instruments, famous music, the history of music, and hoe to make music. Both of those in that aspect can still be used for test. Gym you could learn some exercises and stuff. A better way to measure smartness is more tests on what people know. Your not smarter than someone else if you know less than someone else. The only way a test wouldn't work is if the person doing the test isn't trying.

This is an easy fix. Teachers need to make what they're teaching engaging and exciting for ALL the students, and then face to face individually test them on their knowledge.
Yep. And be willing to pay for a teacher per three or four students. If you can pay them, then this would work. If not... How are the teachers going to have the time to prepare individually tailored classes for each student and then test their knowledge individually? It takes time to prepare well for teaching, no matter the number of students.

I have good marks ( 75-80%)
Understanding your notes is clearly not related to scoring high because I've been doing just that and struggling to be above average. And don't tell me that my way of learning is wrong. I've been the topper of my class for 9 years straight but preparing for competitive exams in a foundation course is just an immense load of information that my brain cannot retain for a long period of time
True but a lot of things require memorization. And pretty much the whole point of going to a school is learning information. That’s why people in higher professions go to school, to understand the information required to do that job. This is just my understanding and I am obviously not a professional. You make it sound like we didn't spend years in training learning about development and how best to impart knowledge and we just give a test because we can't creatively think of anything better to do.
That's not true. Tests don't just show how well a person can memorize, they also show how well a person can understand the concepts. If you understand the concept you can write it on your own by including all points and still get marks, like in maths.
However memorisation is also really important from kindergarten to medical fields and such.
Im sorry but ill have to disagree, to pass a test, you either memorize or learn. If you memorize, it’ll be harder. On the contrary, if you actually learn the subject, questions that arent even in the book you can answer correctly
As a 14 year old kid, High school is really a pain in the butt. Although, the test may seem just memorizing, but it's just a test whether you memorized... Or understood! Please do not memorize because memorizing almost always leads to mental blocking during tests. We need to understand rather than memorizing. Do not memorize, but do study well and understand. And regarding about Math, yeah it's the worst but yeah, perhaps some things in math are just things that we won't be needing in our future, but studying mathematics helps and enhances our problem solving capabilities! Which is why there are tons of word problem in math because we need it to reflect and use it on daily basis.
I see some people say you can just Google stuff... That's quite unwise. Let's say in Math, we could just Google stuff, Google answers, formulas. Think about exams like a puzzle instead of a "remembering" game Even if this was applied to socity, don't you think everyone will drop out instead of pursing higher edu? Its easier said then done.
Actually not, unless you're going for a very education based career like architecture or doctor, then sure. However, it's only necessary to learn in college since it's way easier to learn that one major for your career. However for highschool specifically it's the entire schooling system. If you look at places like Finland they're doing great things with learning. They have shorter days, they focus more on collaboration than competition, improved learning, and more engaged classes. The main part of their schooling system is that people CHOOSE to pursue learning what they want to learn instead of being forced to "learn" something that they're not going to apply their career, or just simply not interested in.
Additionally, teachers here don't get paid nearly enough to make class remotely fun which is really sad.

The fact that I actually have never studied... And I still get really good grades?
Memorization literally IS being smart
Being smart is a factor of 2 things, your ability to understand something and how complicated that thing is
Let's say I show you 10 things and ask you to recite them in the order I showed them to you. If you can't tell me, you obviously don't understand the order of those things. Memorization is how well you are able to understand a topic. If you can't memorize anything, you will not get a good job because you won't be able to understand anything about that job.
That doesnt change the fact you wont get a good grade
grades are useless 90% of what you learn wont be used in standard jobs anyways
You rely on grades I believe the grading system is stupid and why should it correspond to professions? Like I need a medical degree to become a fucking janitor?
I literally just 'memorize' what we did in class, basically do homework in the last minute and I 'memorize' more.
Honestly, we should be able to pick what we want to do in the future so we don't mix it up then and maybe risk someone's life.
Umm, you get to pick what you study in college
That's why I love math. Tests are skill based and math is by far my most successful subject
Sometimes but its still mainly just remembering formulas or the steps to do it

@@epik8084 mm yea, but still, let's say you learned that (a+b) - (a+c) is just b+c, you can easily prove that with simple logic
(a+b) - (a+c) = a + b - a - c = b - c
or better yet, use that formula in real cases
for example : there is no "distance formula", it's the pythagorean formula but just employed differently
Sorry, dude. Memorization is a form of intelligence, and so is being able to justify reasoning, which is often part of tests, as well as even, just, logic. Anyeay, your criticism seems that of the lazy kids making excuses. And dont forget, another form of intelligence is knowing what when and how much to study.
Yup It's The System Used Since Time That I Haven't Memorized It's Very Efficient To Produce Professional Class Workers
Accurate AF, the fact this video is getting hate shows that you’re right
No? He just said an old system is bad, then didn’t give any alternatives to that old system.
Excuse for not being smart
being able to memorize something is proof that you've learned something and can apply it in the real world 💀
Yes, apply calculus, algebra and history to daily life, since when did u even applied those to cleaning stuff?
Plenty of girls from my class had all straight A's yet they dumb af (lacking common sense)
@@Tsukasa48Gaming you apply it to mathematical and historical professions. How do you apply watching UA-cam shorts to cleaning 🤦♂️

Memorizing isn't learning.
Yeah no the thing behind the education system is that unlike most other things like tech travel and farming it hasn’t really changed too much which isn’t always a bad thing but the fact is that the reason people go to school is to learn things that get them to college not MANY schools encourage kids to learn what they want to or help them with basic things in life such as tax’s cooking how to wash clothes how to invest and how to drive now again this is what college is for so you can do what you actually want to do but our whole lives we don’t really know what we want as instead of learning about things that are actually useful for what INDIVIDUAL people want to be they teach based on what “could be useful for X job and Y situation” I can get basic stuff like up to algebra which is just if I don’t know what X number is I can use Y number to calculate it but what do people genuinely need shit like calculus and trigonometry or even geometry which are things used for specific things and school doesn’t want to change anything because their afraid of “losing government funding” which is the reason why most states in the US take statewide mandated tests
You need memory for everything
You need it to know how to walk
You need it to know how to read
You need it to know how to speak
True. The real problem is how the memorization is implemented. It should be engaging and exciting, not stressing out students with 50 questions over a subject that matters less than knowing how to play a board game. It is not correct to just leave it at "memorization is wrong", you got to explain what is wrong about how your school makes you memorize things. This is what the guy in the video failed to do properly
And im seeing a lot of other people in the comments section make the same dumb mistake
So i guess this is a common missconception
Bro is really onto nothing 🔥
Students must be given problems in real life and provide the solutions based on their knowledge.
Like
how do you stop someone from robbing a bank?
Some may answer "If there is no bank, there will be no bank robbery."
But they must suggest an alternative solution.
If the solution is possible then the students can be graded based on the various aspects like time to implement , capital needed etc.
Anyone reading this thanks for your patience.
Teacher: I don‘t get paid enough to do this…
yuh uh, everyone can agree math is easy AF but shit like geography is """"hard"""" (fuckin cant memorize some crusty ass jpeg compressed picture of a map)
BRO
Someone at my school brought a vv gun and the school thought it was a real gun because they look similar so the school brought the police into this and now that kid is in kids jail just because he brought a vv gun so never bring a vv gun to school they might be toy guns but they look like real guns stay safe!❤
in my asian school 80% of our grade is based on resitation 20% on exams and homework
The school is named La Immaculada Conception School or LICS
In the uk for GCSE for most subjects this is true and you have to apply that knowledge but for GCSE business half the marks are on a case study they give you
Nah bro memory can determine intelligence, since how person memorizes things and their speed of memorization is really important. I you can't study that's a skill issue
I see where you're coming from but memorization is very important if you're going to learn something of course to learn something you have to understand it but usually if you understand it you can memorize it but if you're memorizing it without understanding it then it's messed up but if you understand it and memorize it then you're doing good if you understand it but not memorize it you're also not doing good because then you won't be able to remember what you understand therefore the school system is not super messed up although it is kind of messed up in other aspects but not in this particular one
Actually, memorizing is less efficient than understanding, and anyway, both of them are IQ indicators.
Everyone is asking for a "alternative message " so here is one to shut them all up how about instead of a "test". We use notes to answer the test questions.Ik what u guys r thinking that is a test but with notes its a different WAY of taking the test the WAY is bad not tests in general
Wow, it’s almost like to learn something you need to memorize 🤯🤯🤯 mf really thought he was doing something with this 😂
Intellegent peole are good at memorizing. Memorizing is a huge part of intellegence. Really dumb point youre trying to make here
Meanwhile, scienc-y subject that relay on utelising what you are given to solve a problem.
Tests do not just require memorization. Students are required to use the knowledge the memorized to apply to scenarios, develop solutions/problem solve etc. this video is so misleading. If you didn’t want to study just say that and stop making excuses 🤷🏽♀️
Are you a nerd
Im in highschool and our teachers let us use our notes on the test and it has shown no improvement from when they didn't allow it
Being good at memorizing is actually a good thing in life...😂 It means that when you are faced with a problem you will have resources at your disposal without needing to constantly look things up. Is that such a bad thing? To be able to use what you have in your own mind to problem solve?
The school system is fcked tho
Why would you tell the teacher this. Not like they can change the system theyre just doing their job 💀
Then what else should they do if f they are better in memorizing that means they are smarter and put in more effort
Bruh, you are smart when you memorised a lot of things and you know a lot...
Me watching this while procrastinating to study: 👁👄👁
What he’s saying is true that it’s just about memorizing but it’s still important to remember that studying does help as you can memorize it better with studying and honestly I don’t see a problem with just memorizing an example I memorize how to talk and most people agree that talking is important
The sort of test where you memorise information is just a matter of who can memorise better. But the sort of test where the information that you have memorised is practically used shows that someone has really learnt something and can use not just memorised it.
Bruh thats stupid, then grades are only based on talent, no effort
Math, Proggraming and phisics have another opinion ...
Memorizing things is how you get good at it
Wait so you should not study about diseases and how to avoid them like in biology or like physics in which u can study motion which can help you build projects in future or chemistry which can help you find out negative chemicals in your medicine food etc.
Although Chapters like history and other studies are not as important
only those who dont understand the topic need memorising. 80% of "smart kids" understand the topic which helps them in university later on. and even if you didnt understand it and started memorising, memorising is also a very good skill which is needed if youre going for medical school.
It's mainly because people and systems can't change. It's so hard for people to change
math physics and chemistry may have escaped your vission
The only things we need to memorize are things we need to use consistently. Everything else can wait 15 seconds for me to look it up. We live in the age of information, memorization doesn't matter nearly as much as it did, the world is evolving and it's time schools did too.
Smart answer
I didn't think of this
Math and music is exceptions but otherwise agreed
open book tests should be standardised across all subjects
Bros tryna justify his stupidity🤣🤣🤣
Not only that, but short term specifically, your pour your mind with a shit ton of meaningless information in to your head within a short amount of time to throw it up on a paper and forget everything the next morning.
