Hungary having a full-blown rebellion against Austria in the middle of WW1 is an interesting idea for me. It's not that Nicolas wasn't interested in ruling. It was that Nicolas wanted all the power for himself. He was surrounded by people (his wife) who had urged him to maintain his authority. Had his father had taught him how to rule Russia and at least gave him a more active role in government, perhaps the czar would have ruled Russia better. But I need to research if the previous czar's had any such experience.

As a Pole, I got the same take as you. We managed to gain our independence after the first world war. And later, as a result of WW2. We may of lost Western Ukraine, Belarus, and parts of Lithuania. But we gained valuable German territories, and good industrial lands. Which also gave us more space away from Russia, and bought us closer to the west, not just geopolitically but also geographically (borders shifting west), and yes ik about the eastern block, am referring to after its collapse. And honestly we got some good borders out of it, when comparing it to the potential borders of Poland if Roosevelt’s or Churchill’s plans for a divided Germany became reality. In which Poland got even less land. So honestly, am happy with what we got, although I think we should of kept some extra land. But am no crazy nationalist and so there is no reason to complain as extra land makes no sense nowadays.
And yes, Moldova and Romania will probs unite sooner rather than later. Agreed. X

Russia did do well in WW1, like all powers they had setbacks but there enemies were overstretched and they had considerable staying power. The stereotype of Russia in ww1 partly comes from the mismanagement of the military that started under the provisional government and majorly because of Soviet propaganda.
Historians think that without the revolution the war probably would have ended in 1917, indeed this was a motivation for the revolution, victory would lead to the political death of liberalism, the Tsar would most likely have used his reinforced position to get rid of the political concessions, on top of this Britain and France were heavily involved, they wanted Russia to transition over to liberalism and were terrified of Russia owning Constantinople and thus breaking out of the black sea into into the Mediterranean. The ottoman empire had long been propped up by the rest of Europe for this exact reason.
The revolution had considerable organisational support from Britain, once it happened however the duma quickly proved themselves clowns, they introduced democracy to the army, gave contradictory orders and sidelined skilled officers and generals as politically suspect, they also allowed the enemies to the left to set up parallel government organisations. Even before Lenin overthrowing their government was mostly a matter of getting troops to the capital, railway workers were a considerably more effective force in the preservation of the government than any military one.
Russia could have fought the war on better terms, but to do this they would have had to have had different people in leadership positions, the Tsar lacked initiative and was overly suggestable, and to be frank if that or the quality of higher officials were better then not only would Russia have beaten Japan in 1904 but Russia probably would have allied with Germany given that that is explicitly what Tsar Nicholas and Kaiser Wilhelm had wished for, being close friends, and politically similar in their views.
The other method would be reform of the army system, but to be frank that would have taken a genius imbued with unchecked power and a pretty good idea of how things would pan out and which senior officers were reliable.
For the most part was the revolution, a junta plot by high ranking generals, the poor quality of the garrison of st Petersburg and the lack of a man of action on the ground nearby that spelled doom for Russia's military effort. As a purely military force they showed themselves more than capable.

Italy gaining Dalmatia would not in any way prevent Mussolini's rise to power, as the economy would still collapse and the king would still prefer the fascists over the communists
Also, no way does Russia randomly take the polish corridor if Poland has their sea access, they would take posen and Napoleonic polish borders at best

    • @rewriting-history
