- 003. In this video I'm answering the question - what is buying and merchandising?

Buying and merchandising is one of the biggest departments in the fashion industry, and that's because fashion buyers and merchandisers are responsible for all of the stock that is going to make it to stores. They range build and work together through sourcing, working with factories and developing styles all the way until they make it to stores.

I'll also be talking through what a good buying & merchandising team would aim to achieve at the end of their run. Things like really good sales - hopefully even selling out, good profit margins and really good trend analysis, even making it to press.. these a few things a good buying and merchandising team would aim to achieve each season.

The first thing a buying and merchandising team would do is they would range build together. We would do this in what we would call 'sign off' meetings and in these meetings we would analyse how the previous season has done when going on to building the next season. For example, when building AW2021 we would have to go back in analysing how AW2020 has performed where we would analyse all of the bestsellers, picking out which styles did really well. We would also take note of what didn't sell, but mainly we want to analyse what made the bestsellers from AW2020 really good and work together in figuring out how to move this styles along and capitalise on those bestsellers some more, or even how we can make it even better.

So, for example lets say a good trench coat did really well for AW2020, for AW2021 we want to see - can we do more options in that trench coat? Should we do more colour ways? Should we add a check, or any print this really in for this season? So what goes into that is a bit of trend analysis too.. so we would work with the design team and what we would do is we would analyse from runway and all the other inspirations whats hot right now, put that into that trench coat and then hopefully develop another bestseller out of that style.

Once we've decided what styles we're going to do, we would develop sourcing. So sourcing is another responsibility that falls mainly in the hands of the buying and merchandising team as they are responsible for talking to all of the suppliers, all of the factories and developing everything that they need. So things like swatch approvals, sketch approvals, you would send all of the tech packs to factories and place the orders for all of the styles that you've picked and developing those styles would fall in your responsibility. A lot of other things fall under that as well because you'd also need to consider things like cost, profit margin, pricing etc. All of those things, as much as we mentioned we want to improve the tech coat for example, we also want to improve things like the cost and the pricing of that trench coat too. Lets say last year our customer really loved it, we would want her to buy it again or we would want her to buy another option of it again so we would think how can we improve even the price of it, how can we make it even a little bit more cost effective for her and things like that. So there are just so many technicalities that go into it, not even just the way that a garment looks but how much it costs, how much each fabrication costs, how much each button, zip and opening! All these considerations fall under the responsibility of the buying and merchandising team.

I mentioned trend analysis, that definitely falls into it. With trend analysis, we would definitely use the resources of the design team, so design would do what we would call 'design briefs' and they would accumulate catalogues of visuals that they would feed to the design team and let us know whats really good, what s trending on runway etc. And another thing that the buying and merchandising team would do to cover trend analysis is we'd hit the streets ourselves! We'd have to do comp shopping, visiting other stores, we'd really have to go out there and see what happening on the high street. Things like talking to your friends, if you see someone on a night out wearing something cool, finding out where its from.. trying to identify any emerging trends and using that in your own range building is a huge deal

I mentioned product development as well, so product development can mean anything from swatch approvals, colour testing.. all the way until working with the garment technicians and product developers who are a bit more technical with the manufacturing and can give us really detailed guidelines when handling the factories. All of those things fall under the responsibility of the buying and merchandising team as well because that’s obviously very important too, things like fit and the make….
