  • First of the jobs to make the Iron "a bit more me", replaced the OE factory seat with a LePera 'Bare Bones' seat, and swaped out the rediculous 13" rear shocks for some 'Progressive Suspension' 11's ...took a total of 4 inches out of the ride height, i think we can say we.Slaaamed it baby..!

    Hi mate, Progressive Suspension is recommended by Harley... and Riders of Bridgwater are a Harley main agent, so they are a product, much like Ohlins, that whilst aftermarket are actually better than the factory rubbish... they are very good quality...

    I thought the american irons had 11' shocks, 13' were for Europe, something to do with placement of the number plate over here?

      My Iron has 11" stock shocks. Debating to purchase a bit longer shock.

    Hi Dell. I love what you did to your bike.
    I do have a question if that's okay
    With your progressive shocks at 11inch
    Would you ride 2up being that low and would it be comfy??
    I've been thinking about getting the 430 series 11.5 ... Or 11 all depends on riding two up
    Thank you for your time
    Jackson

    @Moonfleet41  11 років тому

    Hi Robert, 230 is about 16 stone, so i would say that the 11" shocks would need to be pretty heavily sprung, there is only 1.5inches of travel with 11" shocks, so not much soakup, and if you check how much yours currently drop when you sit on it, you'll be able to see if you have any left for bumps....if it drops tow inches now, then you'll bottom our all the time...if you were a light lad like say 150lb's then you would be fine, but its just how much drop you need at your weight..

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  11 років тому

    Hi Dale, it certainly should do buddy, as long as the back fender doesn't have the ECU mounted on the fender then you should be ok....the only thing stopping it would be if the fender had the huge hole under the seat like on the 883L, but i think all the bobbed fender bikes have it mounted elsewhere, so the Nightster, 48 and iron models should all be fine for the 006....Just take off your factory seat and check for the forward screw hole, if its there, then your good to go buddy, take care, Del.

    TBH I think spring seats on flat Sportster seat rails look all wrong, they are designed for sloping rails on choppers and Softails, why not look into a Le Pera seat (try E-bay or Craigs List) they have sophisticated memory foam and are covered with 'Naughide', and are infinitely more comfortable than the factory seats (check out their website first for which model you need), Hope this helps you, thanks mate, take care, Del

    Hi Dave, no the ride is not that bad..but all things can be inproved..and the shocks i used on the Iron i had were "Progressive Suspension" model "412" and they were a lot better... the damping is much better quality, more supple and makes the bike steadier in bends... also once the bike is lowered the suspension has less travel up and down, (only an inch), so can become harsher and more rigid...the PS shocks give you back the smoothness over a shorter travel range and are well worth the money.

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 років тому

    Hi Randy.. The PS 412's are a little soft but you are about 30lbs lighter than me, and whilst i had them set on the hardest setting...they never bottomed out once.... and you may just need to bend the front edge of the belt guard down a bit just so it doesnt hit...otherthan that they are fine... much as they are the same height now....the damping technology and quality of movement is way better...they will make the bike more supple and smooth to ride...good luck buddy... Del.

    Hi buddy, sorry to not be clear, its easy to get them confused.. right;- first look at the bottom mount on the shock.."it sits to one side"..orientate it so the mount sits to the outside (farthest away from the bike), fit the insert through the bottom loop from the outside, then shove the bolt through it, and the thick spacer goes inside (between the shock and the swing arm)... have a go at that, and if you are still confused, ill do you a quick video when i can. hope that helps, Del.

    Hey there matey.... we bought the Progressive Suspension shocks for both bikes from the guys at "Riders of Bridgwater", simply a Harley dealer with the right attitude, did it all over the telephone, paid with my card, and they sent them next day delivery... they even offered to swap them for longer ones if i fitted them and found them too low.. also the price was veyr competative, i seem to remember they cost about £250 a set... not bad for the amazing improvement they gave, good luck, Del.

    Iron1..?, mate im so jealous, you blokes can have almost anything you want, and the only way i can have my name on my plate, is if i change my name to W246 HNF..lol.. good call on the shocks, the factory ones realy are dire aren't they?, like the designer is either 180Kilos, or blind... with the filter, have a look at the "Kuryakin Velociraptor", we put one on MissyP's Sportster and it looks ace, and i have never seen another one on a bike over here...!! take care buddy and ride safe.. Del.

    We have to separate being 'Anti-American' from 'Anti Harley'. plenty of people over here are both... but they are not related...personally, i hate politics, and politicians, the Love the ethos of Halrey, the heritage and consistancy of thought through 100+ years of production... theres somthing permanent about a harley.. and as for 'Anti American'... i wish us English were half as patriotic about our country... bikers are a worldwide brotherhood buddy, to us there are no borders..Ride free, Del.

    Others have made a similar comment, the point has been a bit missed, maybe i didnt make it clear, i dont have any real beef with satin or matt paint.far from it... just as long as it is "paint".. the coating on your bike is not paint, it is a hidious, cheap powder coating that cant be repaired of repainted.. the use it because its cheap and easy to apply. same as most parts on modern Harleys..

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 років тому

    Hi buddy, Welcome to the world of lowered bikes, the stand is easily dealt with, you can either shorten it, of buy a factory stand for an 883L, (which will be shorter) then with regard to anything grounding out, just observe the scuff it makes, and dress that part of the steel back with a grinder, dont take off so much steel that you make it weak, but enough to buy yourself some clearance...oh, and maybe corner a bit slower too.lol.. All Harleys ground, its just a case of modification..

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 років тому

    Sorry wasnt clear there mate. "lifting the forks".... can also be described as "dropping the clamps".... just loosten off the top and bottom pinch bolts on one side of the fork clamp (tripple tree, top an bottom yoke, what ever you call it)...and allow the fork tube to rise out of the top clamp about half inch....then do the same the other side, clamp it all up tight and hey prestow you have lowered the front, and the little bit of fork poking out the top hardly notices...and its free too..Del.

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 років тому

    Hi mate, i went for the11" because it looked best, and didnt ground or scrape anywhere... i did lift the forks out of the clamps by half inch, and it sat perfectly flat with the frame rails totally parallel to the ground.. they are back end high form the factory... i did run them on highest preload, and never took a pillion... so if you are going to, or are heavier then me (180lb's) then use the 11.5.... hope that helps buddy.... and the plate was 7x5" cheers, Del

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 років тому

    Burely shocks are rock hard and dont give any ride quality, 11" PS shocks work better and sit at the same ride height as your Burleys on the road....... and you read me wrong on the satin paint....satin paint does rock, but what is on your bike is not paint..its an electrostaticly applied powder coat, and its rubbish, its too thin and it rusts in the bad weather. if you want satin paint, then use "paint", and you will see how much better it looks..factory "Denim" is bullshit and never looks good

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 років тому

    Hi mate, without wishing to sound personal, it all depends on how heavy your pillion is, if its your 5 year old kid, then fit an 11", but if its a full weight adult, and you are a big chap, then you will need at least an 11.5, maybe even a 12,,,,which defeates the object....if it was me, i would have some cool slammed out 11" ones like mine, then just fit the factory shocks back on to take the pillion out for the day, after all, it only takes ten minutes...hope that helps...good luck, Del.

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 років тому

    Hi there, my iron was a 2010, and i know why people make this warning of the seat not fitting, its about the hole that the '006' seat screws into, most sportsters do not have the front hole in the fenrder, so theres nothing to fix it to, if you watch my video you can see the hole i bolted the rear bracket onto, if you have that, then the seat will fit,, and if not, then just drill the hole in the fender yourself, then it will fit fine..and by the way your English is better than my Portuguese.lol

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 років тому

    @AntiheroBreakz Hi there, yes i did use that seat, and there are some very subtle differences to each bike that mean the mount points need to be a bit longer or shorter ect... so go with the dealers advice, the seat will be the same style, and if the seat is wrong, and he advised it, then its on him to get you the right one... as long as its a Bare Bones seat, then it will look exactly the same once it is fitted.. the code numbers just pertain to the mounting holes..good luck and ride safe. Del.

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 років тому

    @zoneBOMB Naah, never once, but that could just be luck.... the trick is to have a yellow, full sized one ready to fit, and if you DO get any static from the Rozzers, just say you will change right away and didnt know it was an offence...its only a Defect notice anyway, no points or fine.. then stick the yellow one on top with sticki backs...take it to the MOT man to get your ticket stamped and send it off.. then after that.. just pull the yellow one off again.. like i said, i never had an issie

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 років тому

    @wildkatze69 Hi mate, thanks for your kind comments, and yeah, dont go buying the 48 seat, all Harley seats have inferior foam compared to the LePera memory foam, also they use thick genuine Naughide to cover them which is rubbery and elastic..this, with the better foam, yields more and stays comfy for a lot longer distance on long rides..also the steel base is ten tiems better quality than the factory items... thanks again buddy, and ride safe. Del.

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  13 років тому

    @durhamevans Hi mate. NO, is the simple answer... you have to take the weight off the back wheel so you can take the old shocks off, even if you go one at a time, they are different lengths so you'll still need to get the back wheel up off the ground... If you dont have a lift, then its still quite easy to get the back up.. Just poke a trolley jack under the right hand side just by the swing arm pivot, and jack it against its side stand, that will lift the back off and be quite stable too..

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  13 років тому

    @nordtiger Hi there, Yes i did, checked it and it was fine. The needs to be quite tight compared to a chain, only 3/4 to 1 inch of deflection at the sight hole on the bottom belt guard, many riders run them too loose, so check you have not backed it off too much, the belt actually loosens off as you lower it below the horizontal, if your belt is old, then make sure you check it every month as they stretch a lot with age.

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  13 років тому

    @mrrshotshot It's 13" from factory, and 11" with the new shocks. It depends if your passenger is very light, then maybe, but it would more than likely bottom out, the shocks come with a warning to "bend the belt guard a bit if it touches", s it is pretty much on the limit. HOWEVER. if you talk to Progressive Suspension direct, ask them if they offer a model with a stiffer spring, mine are the model "412", im sure they will do a beefier one that offeres the same low ride height, good luck buddy.

    @BenalexH Hi Ben, never be afraid to ask buddy, its alwasy a pleasure to help... im an old fashioned bloke... everything with me is imperial if possible... so its 50 ft lbs... never used newtons..lol..but if you want to, its 67NM. Hope the swap went well, you may need to play with the preload on the twist collar to get the ride comfort just right. but im betting it looks a ton better already aye..? Lets have a video then.. take care... del.

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  13 років тому

    @MrMasterMiller No worries Keith, buying a bike should be a joyous process, and yeah getting it just right can be a weirdly stressful task, but if you just go at everything with a "try before you buy" mentality, and ask questions of everybory who will listen, you should end up making a much more informed and considered choice.. money is hard earned aye, spend it wisely...lol..lets have some pictures or better still a walk round video when the new baby gets home to the driveway.. take care, Del.

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  13 років тому

    @Wi66pro Hi Paul. The shocks i used are the 412 with heavy duty spring, they sit "off the bike at 11" centre to centre, and now they have settled they sit with the bike upright and no load, 10,3/4" and never bottom, with me on the bike they ride at 10" and i use them on the top preload setting (and im 13 stone) . if i twist them down to lowest preload them bump down hard on them the frame hits the belt guard, but there is a warning and advice to bend the guard down, in the box they come with..

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  13 років тому

    @kennroxx Its really comfortable mate, its a premium quality seat, the base is made from 14 guage steel, covered under with soft carpet to protect it, and the 'fit' is perfect, ... but more than anything, it has a really odd foam, its squidy like memory foam, firm and supportive yet never is it harsh, also the Naughide stretches and moulds to your shape so there is no resistance in it, all round its ten times better than any Harley seat ive ever sat on... go for it ken, you wont regret it.

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  13 років тому

    @Chipitin4birdie Your welcome buddy, i almost bought the Biltwell struts, but its a waste money, first they look flimsy compared to the stumpy fat shocks, and also, the shocks ride at 10" once you park your weight on the bike. If you want the bike even lower then just twist the preloader down to minimum, and they ride at 9" lol.. so low in fact that the belt guard hits the frame ha ha. there is even a tip in the instructions to bend the guard if you need to, so struts are BS, go for the shocks.

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  13 років тому

    @Chipitin4birdie yeah chip, i was going to make a whole big thing about that, the 006 is indeed designed for the sportster up to 06, and the only difference is that the seat i have is 5" shorter and needs a hole at the front, the regular sportsters dont seem to have this hole, so LePera make a longer seat to fit the only available bolt hole that is further back....HOWEVER... the Iron, Nighters and 48 all have the "Bobbed" rear fender, and this fender has the hole at the front, so the 006 fits

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  13 років тому

    @Chipitin4birdie Hi there Chip, its a pleasure mate, they are;- "Progressive Suspension Model 412" ,they are 11 inches long, and can be bought all over Europe from pretty much any Harley Davidson dealership. I dont know what they will cost you in Germany, but here in the UK i paid £270.00 sterling, and that included postage.
    Good luck with the swap[, its dead easy, and will transform your ride...( they are very low, and you will probably need them on the top or next preload setting)

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  13 років тому

    @p8rdm Hi RIK, the shocks are "Progressive Suspension Model 412" ... and NO, the number plate is completely illegal..! but its been on there for a year, and ive never had a single issue, including riding in front of Police cars from time to time, i have the factory legal garage door sized plate, and at worst its a Defect rectification notice.! live your life aye...;-)

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  11 років тому

    They were a pair of the old Screaming Eagle slip ons from the late 90's, but today you can get the same sound from V&H short shots...and no, no remap needed if you just fit the mufflers only and leave the air filter alone..but as i had the stage one filter i had to buy a SE Pro tuner, and got the dealer to set it up... .good luck, Del.

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  11 років тому

    hi mate.. like i said in the video, as long as you arent planning on riding across continents they are very comfy, the Naughide covering is very stretchy and forms well to yer butt...and the foam used is a clever memory foam.. its an easy choice for me...they are more comfy than the factory seat that is double the thickness....go for it buddy, you wont regret it..!

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  11 років тому

    Its a trade off mate, lower shocks make a lower bike, you will scuff the pipes if you lean into a right hander a bit too low, and if yer a heavy boy you'll bottom out the springs on a fast pot hole too....but like i said, its a trade off for the slammed look.. i got on just fine by modifying my riding a bit and all was well... good luck chap.. all the best Del.

    Hi mate, thanks for your kind comments, the Gloves are by "Richa" and i think the model is just called "Cruiser gloves", cost about £50, and no, they are really a summer glove, not much lining and short to the wrist... (you can use Rigger gloves form a tools shop, and get bige ones so you can wear wolly gloves under them in winter.. then you get the light tan look...

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 років тому

    No, it sits way too low now for carrying a passenger, but you can buy the next model up that are an inch longer and that will allow you to do that... all custom mods are a compromise in some way, it all depends on what sacrifices you are prepared to make, and 'not carrying a passenger' is no problem for me as mine has her own bike..lol... thanks mate... Del.

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 років тому

    Not really buddy, maybe if your pillion is a child.. but they are a bit low for that, there is only 1" of travel on them and you will bottom them out..better if you want to take pillions then go for the 12" and they should have the preload range you need... hope that helps.. Del.

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 років тому

    Wrong size plate, wrong size letters, wrong colour back ground, wrong colour lettering, wrong font, and un-lit.....so erm.. yeah, everso slightly aye..lol.. but i never got a tug, and thats good enough for me, there are bigger issues for coppers to deal with aye..

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 років тому

    Ha ha, you are so right... thats why i dont ask... a plate must be 9"x7" with 2'5" letters... that looks rubbish so we have small ones and take a chance... never had a problem because the Police have better things to do.. and at MOT time i just poke a standard legal one on...

    both 11 and 11.5 feel the same as you can adjust out that small amount of difference wit hte preload...the springs are softer and more forgiving, and the damping it better....plus they inprove with miles once the sticksion settles down..

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  11 років тому

    hi buddy, no problem, they are really cheap in comparison to sports bikes...i would say a middle aged person with a clean driving record and some NCB would pay between £100 / £150 depending on where you live...

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  11 років тому

    Those shocks are really only for solo riding or maybe a very light pillion like a kid or something....but two adults would cause it to bottom out....go for the higher ones and inch taller and they will work fine.. Del.

    Suggestion, before and after side by side.
    This video was truly amazing, everything you said about the contour and shape of the bike leading to and then including the seat... 100% spot on, and then the distance of travel for the rear fender.... I swear it kills me everytime I look at my stock bike.
    This was an amazing video.
    As someone that has always loved the shape and the agility of the sportster, and it's ability to change into whatever you want it to be... This video was a great help! Thank you!

    Hi there, the gaiters are for looks only - underneath them there are regular fork seals and dust caps just like every other Harley! ... It's perfectly ok to remove them, you can either do this by dropping the fork legs out and slipping them off the top (if you want to retain them for later re-fitment) or just carefully slice them out with a Stanley knife, hope that helps, Cheers, Del

    Hi Matt, glad you mentioned this because the 11" shocks are way too low for any form of pillion rider, they are strictly solo only, I am 13 stone & even on the highest setting I managed to bottom them on pot holes, if I were you carrying a pillion will mean at 11.5" & try & get away with max pre-load or even the 12's (which is still an inch lower as they are 13" standard)..good luck, chap, hope that helps, Del

    Hi there Yannou....yes you can fit the 03-06 seat like mine to any sportster, the only difference is that you may not have the hole to locate the rear bolt...if not, then you can just drill a hole on your fender where the bolt goes through, (plus make a little slot just like the existing hole the factory put further back)... that will work fine and give a lovely ride plus lower position too as the foam is really top quality....i hope that helps, good luck and let me know if you ghet stuck. Del.

    There's no challenge to it buddy, its a simple little job, but i dont have need to do it..Penny's Iron is only 4k miles and not even at second service yet...so stuck for a bike to use as an example.....we just film and load whjat we do here as a matter of course. good luck with it, take care, Del.

    Hi mate, you are 2" taller than me & I know what you mean...the Iron is perfect as the power is plenty if you Stage1 tune it &you can always convert it to 1200 later (like Penny did) - the trick will be to modify it with the right pegs & bars, you'll need forward pegs for certain & either some Biltwell Keystone bars for the forward reach or some mini-apes from the Nightster & while I mention it, you could check the Nightster out first, test ride a few & see what you think! Good luck, Del

    Hi buddy,that question made me smile and proves,once again,that those of us who know about mechanical things must never take it for granted that others do,so to answer your question,NO,the rear suspension units are modular & completely safe to remove just using a socket wrench.When you take the weight of the bike off them,they extend to a point then stop against a solid steel lock peg,they can only be dismantled using specialist tools & knowledge,so you can take them off in confidence,Cheers Del

    @MrMasterMiller Absolutely the same buddy, the core bike under every sportster is exactly the same bike, all they change is the anciliary parts, so YES, if you buy an 883 iron, and convert to the forward pegs, it will feel just like the 48 (the seat is thicker, but you can fit any seat you like, my LePera is perfect, also, you will like the 70MPG you get from the 883, and 130 miles from brim to reserve, but before you buy the forwards. ride for a bit on the mid pegs.. i love mine, Cheers, Del.

    @Chipitin4birdie Hi Chip. Ok, there should be a little pack of bits and pieces in the box, they are "multifit" meaning they also fit some Dyna and FX models where you use some of the parts, and for sportsters, others.... it is a little confusing... ill send you a detailed reply in private mail Chip, as i can't write much here, hopefull that will explain it.... sending it now...... Del.

    @BenalexH Hi Ben, thanks for watching buddy, like i said in the video, i got the seat second hand and almost unused from a private eBay seller, but it is a standard 'LePera Bare Bones', and can be bought from all manner of suppliers, from Halrey dealers, to the internet, and they cost from about £200 downwards. if you have a surf round eBay im sure you will find many to choose from. thanks again, take care. Del.

    Hi there, as far as I can make out the 13" shocks only come on the Euro market 883 Irons- it seems the US bikes have 11" shocks as standard, which goes to show it must be some kind of Euro legislation thing - thanks for watching, take care, Del

    Hello mate, thank for your kind comments, the Harley has split indicators, they double and tail and brake lights as well as indicators....the factory use the same setup on the Nightster too.. thanks for watching. take care, Del.

    Hi mate, congratulations on your bike, they are a great blank canvas to make whatever you want from...not too expensive to & like all Sportster, great fun to ride...the heat shields are a Harley item called 'Buck Shot Shields' and they were just painted with a black heat-proof paint... hope that helps, good luck with your bike, enjoy every mile, Del

    It was a while ago now, we sold the bike about two years ago...but it was way better with the Naughhyde seat and smoother shocks...even after a 100 mile ride it was still fine....so well worth the investment...

    @memumbling Erm i have to admit, i havent, i presumed they would just clean off with some "Denim paint cleaner" i got free from Harley, then i tried some mineral spirit, and nope, they're wear marks made in the paint by the seat, and also the black paint that has been covered is darker than the paint that was exposed,(probably faded a bit).... In any normal paint situiation i would have just buffed it out with some T-cut... but its that daft "Denim" rubbish ill have to repaint it another time.!

    Ayup mate, im just a bit taller than that, shade under 6ft, but i found if you set up the sportster right they are fine. you can use the Biltwell bars that give you loads longer reach, and fit a flat seat that you can slide back a bit on like the LePera bare bones (tons more comfy too), and of course use the forward controls..so once you do all that, the bike will fit you fine.. you can go another way and fit flat track bars and an XR seat, that makes it higher which will work too. good luck Del

    No Mark, the belt sits at almost centre to centre level as standard...so to lower it or raise it, as long as its not too much will not overstretch the belt....i checked the tension after doing it, and it was bang on....good point to remember though...well said... cheers, Del.

    Hi Sammy... i think you have stumbled across the old quandary, a cheap torque wrench will be crap and cause you problems, so buy a good one and you wont end up regretting it.. thanks for the Discovery comment, we were asked about a year ago to supply some videos for the discovery website, and they posted about a dozen of them which got us a huge kick forwards and made us loads more new subs and publicity...but as for a show, no news so far... thanks again mate, and thanks for your support. Del.

    @Chipitin4birdie Not used the V&H, but they are good, i have the Screaming Eagle fueler remap, and the Wife's bike uses the "Kytech" as hers is a 1200 conversion..... all three work fine, the Kytech is self fit and setup, wheras the SE needs the dealers laptop to remap, but what ever you do, use some kind of fueller, they are essential to enrich the mixture when you increase air flow.. once fitted with the heavy breather you'll notice a massive punch in low end torque and it will run cooler too,

    Well done buddy, glad you got stuck in there yourself...makes your bike hobby all the richer.. With the PS shocks, they may still cause the betl guard to touch the frame spar at the front...if so, just bend the guard down a little bit,. only needs about 1/4 inch... good luck and thanks for watching, take care, Del.

    @Stogie7884 Thanks for the kind words Stogie, you are right, we seem to have a different spec over here in Blighty, maybe its Uncle Willie presuming all British roads are rough and full of pot holes.....hang on, they are..DOH..!
    Thanks again buddy, your support is much appreciated.
