This is tempting...but I wish it had HDMI video out to a tv. That would make it perfect
Yeah, I am sure it a cost issue. It would make this more tempting as composite cables are just not that great anymore.
I've never even though of hooking it up to a TV. I got mine shortly after release and it has gotten more play then probably any other of my handhelds.
Why are there no 5200/7800 games on these Flashback models?
That would present a great opportunity for some crazy hardware modders out there. I wouldn't put it past the community's radar.

2 was and is the best model, it's the only one that's a true 2600 on a chip, can even be modded to play cartridge games!
I actually just picked up my first SupaBoy yesterday. Managed to find one at my local Card Shop. All of these newer portables are amazing.

I got one of these for Christmas from my wife and I'm pleasantly surprised by it!
I went to AtariAge and got schooled now the thing is loaded for bear!
Great way to re-purpose an old 1GB SD card you might have laying around.

Moon patrol is my favourite 2600 game . I remember playing it with my dad and he I'm sure would let me win the last game of the night so I didn't get discouraged. He would get about twice as many points as me because I was really young at the time and the last game he could always judge how many points he thought I would get and get himself destroyed so when it was my turn I had more points.
The menu screen looks so much better than the games do.
So in a previous episode you mentioned John C Riley. And i was like why did he say he was his twin or something. Now I get it....its your voice LOL.

I've got the first one and love it. The screen in the video looks brighter and if has better emulation I'll probably pick it up.
Asteroids for the Atari 2600 is probably my all time favorite game. Berserk reminds me of Dark Cavern from M Network. It was a weird Berserk clone which was on an Intellivision cartridge with an Atari 2600 adapter on the tip. All that aside, that's a neat system, but being me, I would have wanted an actual cartridge slot on the top to play your own games. Of course, that would have made the system too thick to be called "portable".
I didn't have the Atari one but the @ games Sega one w a special hd card that has almost every game got off Amazon and it's one of the best and most favorite handheld console ever had! so can see how this is awesome too!
So true. Once I played Space Invaders on the 2600 I had to have one.

honestly i have a few reasons for wanting to get this. the pros are that it comes with an sd card slot and composite video to tv. also the sounds are better. the cons are only that the screen is smaller. honestly for anyone that wants to start playing atari composite is great for any kind of tv as long as it has some kind of composite hook up on it. in my opinion older crt tvs are much better for atari flashback systems because the screen quality is good and the screen is in the original size format for which atari was first meant to be played. that is the reason im not getting the deluxe versions of the atari flashback 8s because they dont give you an option for av hook up. but i will get the default atari flashback 8 because it has composite video hook up and wired controllers. im sorry for typing so much its just when i play an old school system like atari i like it to be nostalgic almost as if i time traveled to 1986. this would be what i mean about playing the game is in original format and classic wired controllers or 3rd party wired controllers. the other reason im not getting the deluxe versions of the atari flashback 8 is i dont have a tv compatible with hdmi
Great review!! I already have last years Flashback portable, so unless this new model discounted I probably won't buy it. I hope the programmer (DINAR812 on Atariage.com ) gets some royalty money from AT Games for using his excellent homebrew version of Pacman. And I wish AT Games would make a Flashback 9 with an SD card slot!!

I don't get this, why, WHY would they have a dpad which has a useless bump in the middle which I assume makes it harder to move your character?
Possibly a cheaper dpad for production would be my guess, but I have no idea. Last years D pad was better.
It may have something to do with Nintendo renewing the patent on their original Dpad with the release of the NES Classic last year
I think I'd rather get last year's edition. The screen colors looked better on the new one. Is that just the way the camera picked it up?
This is a neat portable for many of the games that came out on the Atari. The only problem I have with this is that there is no real paddle support. Anyone who has played the original Kaboom! will know that the ONLY real way to play that game is with an actual paddle for the control.
Yeah, the control pad is not a substitute for paddles.
Is there any reason to get this if you have last year's model? My hope is they would go more of the Frogger/Space Invaders route and include the original arcade version.
do you know if the new sega firecore portable from atgames (the white one with 80 games) finally fixed the sound issues?
i have last years model and they were not fixed on that version--hopefully this years version will change that :) :)

I enjoy it for what it is. my wife got it for me as part of my Christmas present last year
It's a fun portable, I had one in 2013 if I'm not wrong, it was black and orange, with only 20 games, but that one was $35 when I bought it, and where I live the new white one is $75, it really makes me think If I should buy it, I don't have the old one anymore, and if it's not gonna improve on anything I don't see the point.

My only gripe is that both of these Atari Flashback Portables is that they are left handed devices and I am a right handed game player!!!
I wish Atari would make a flashback of the jaguar and the 7800 actually I'd love it if they would make a handheld that would play every generation of Atari game on it including the Atari 8and 16 bit computer games.
The first flashback model was a 7800 ;-)
Is it just the footage or exciting software you used or is the sound WAY off? In musician's terms it's a full step down! That would drive me up a wall!

I've said it before but AT@Games can take their crap, and shove it, so not wasting my money on them, but having said that nice video. :-)
How did you download the other games to the sd card? And where are those games listed for download?
I find that the control pad is not that responsive on the first one... do you think this one is better or the same?
I found the first one to be a little better with diagonal but I think that the quality control could be a little off.
This looks a Sega Genesis portable with different firmware and roms loaded on it. Makes me wonder if you can put the Atari firmware on the Genesis model, or vice versa.
Why a smaller screen? Wish it played cartridges like a Supaboy. Thanks for the review, we dont have the version 2 or 1 yet in Australia.

The new one looks cheaper I'm still happy with last years model the sd card slot has made it future proof
I bought an Atari Flashback a few years ago and the girl behind the counter actually made fun of me! Yeah, the Atari is passed my time, but I think a lot of the games are really fun! Obviously. Or I wouldn't have bought it.
What site do you go to o download the roms?
I just got this to take a walk down memory lane, and I *hate* the control pad. It's so stiff, the only game I can play is Haunted House. I was really hoping to play Frogger and Pac Man, but again...the control pad. Maybe this would be better for those who grew up playing Game Boy portables, but it's become obvious that without a joystick, it's pretty much a fail for me.
I'd rather have this than the home console

I have an Atari Flashback 2 that has the original arcade Pong, and I see this portable has a Pong game, but which version of Pong is?
honestly I do not know. Looks like a 1Player version of Video Olympics, but only plays pong, not all the variations.
You should mod yours to play carts
Be nice if you could play 7800 & 5200 hundred Atari Rom games on it.
So the only "enhancement" was to make an already tiny screen even tinier, and throw in a few more games that can just as easily be found online. Lame.
That's pretty irrational changing the D-pad unless they lost the moulds. ^_^ I guess it saves money to have a generic layout shell like that but there isn't anything specifically Atari 2600 about it IE. 6 buttons(?), no Paddle knob. They could stick a knob through one of the button holes. I don't dislike it but it's not any better or worse than many generic portables out there.
The Pac Man included here is a homebrew called Pac Man 4k. Far superior to the original 2600 Pac Man.
I just got one today they had 2 lift from Walmart. I been wanting long time, I usly goto Ebgames they never got it
I bought the 2.0 and downloaded some Roms to it but some of the roms I put on from atariage don’t show up on the device but on the computer it does they are all in a folder marked Games and download as.bin some Roma work but others don’t show up on device like ms. Pac-Man Space invaders Does anyone know why?

picked up an ancient old wacky console called the orbit electronics 'gimini 8600' at a garage sale apparently it was produced right here in New Zealand around the 80s its a shame its missing one controller but looks like everything else is there i can ship it over if you want to check it out imgur.com/a/9qhDh doubt you will see one in the states haha
