- One of the holy grails of old-school gamers has long been a handheld Atari VCS/2600. Well, now we've got one, courtesy of AtGames and their Flashback line. In this video, I review the the Atari Flashback Portable, which includes 60 built-in games and an SD card slot to add your own.

Thanks for having the courage to speak about "the glue of nostalgia". Not trying to disrespect the Atari crowd in any way, though it's nice to see such a great channel not falling into the "everything was better back in the day" trend.
I think it is perfectly OK to love any machine for reasons other than its performance (I'm myself discovering the Atari STe machine and the MSX systems... and I came from an Amiga background). Also, you have an open attitude towards emulation and your opinions are both personal and globally relatable.

As far as the packaging, that reminds me of my genesis flashback. Not a handheld, the console. Gotta wonder what they were thinking when they designed the packaging
It looks like it might not just be the sound but the overall emulation speed that's slower (at least the original hardware seemed to be just slightly quicker than the handheld). If so, that's just a timing issue that probably can't be fixed without actually changing the clock speed of the chip that's doing the emulation.

I hope they bring out the Atari 7800 Flashback with all the built in games as that option.
Even this portable Atari 2600 using a 2GB storage card for additional games. However some additional Atari 2600 games don't work or unresponsive must fix such situations.
Why is AT Games asked to pitch 1 octave down by Sega and Atari ?

JR 1322 it may have a few little issues but damn, I’ve been waiting for this for Years!! Have an original 1977 Sunnyvale CA heavy sixer and I love it. Harmony cart rules! Just bought some new joysticks for it. Brings back happy childhood memories when games were fun and simple.

I had an Atari 2600 as a kid. I never had 5200 or 7800. I've watched videos on 7800 and I'd like to play some of those. I'm wanting to play Sega's SG-1000 and master system as well. My cousin Craig had the Master System. I only played it once at his place, but even as a little kid I could I tell it had better specs than NES. I'll try these through emulation first then if I'm into them I'll perhaps buy the actual console or a clone.
Why is the screen smaller then Genesis? Makes no sense. Is this years Atari portable screen even smaller? Good review
They should have built the paddle right into the joystick back in the day.. a little turn wheel on the base would have been all the rage..
They had two 2600 froggers the advanced one was the Sega version, they had that on a actual cart.

At some point, probably. I use MAME all the time. But I'm not sure what aspect specifically to do a video on; a general review doesn't seem necessary at this point. Something will probably come to me at some point, though.
The problem is, it does not do 2 players on that portable even in the Atari Bowling game which I try as the issue.

Most Atari emulators have trouble with BEAMRIDER. How does this unit do ?
I've got a Sega Portable and I tried using a 3.5 audio cable so I can play it on my TV but it didn't work, i tested the cable and that's not the problem. Any suggestions?

thanks for this, would love if it could save and wasn't so expensive for what it was, especially when it doesn't have as cool of a design as the Ultimate Portable Game Player. I am gonna be really happy if a lynx one came out, and it has a great charger port as well, might want to get one. I would love to get one of either the Arcade Gamer Portable, Ultimate Portable Game Player or this one. Can you tell us what games it is compatible with, since the Ultimate Portable Game Player was compatible with NES games as far as I know.

And for all kind of emulator from atari 2600 to ps1 PVP 5 arround 20 USD (supports SD Card)
Offers great emulation,quality battery life,decent screen and great variety of games..
All of those can be found in chinese sites like Aliexpress or ebay (ebay more expensive ofc)
Mine looks sort of differentand instead of 60 built in games, there are 70.
You would think if they were going to do a dedicated portable to one system it would work better. This means 100% compatibility, perfect sound, and even a display that was 1:1 pixel mapped as scaling on an LCD sucks and really doesn't give the CRT look very well. Also they should have made the system LOOK 2600 like, that means wood grain and real toggle switches (could be actually slide switches for low profile) and maybe even a knob for paddle games. I guess they went for cheap, but honestly most people who remember playing 2600 are now adults. Adults usually are advanced in their career and could pay a few extra dollars.

No I am asking for a better device, doesn't need to be $30.00, could be $50.00 maybe even $60 (the price of a PS4 game). It should at least work with all games and have accurate sound (most free emulators do this, even on android or IOS). A little woodgrain sticker doesn't cost much either. Then they could have done better with the design to match the styling better. It costs the same to make a shape closer to the 2600 style as it does to make this.
You could make the business case to AtGames that they'll sell more units at $50 or $60 than at $30. I feel like you're barking up the wrong tree a bit here.

I find your statement about you needing to be wrapped in the nostalgia to really appreciate Atari is absolutely false. I never grew up with Atari i have no connection to it in terms of nostalgia my first console was a Nintendo 64 but I love Atari. I will admit it takes some getting used to especially if you are a modern gamer . But Atari is like any good book once you relax your mind and turn yourself off to all the distractions around you and actually sit and let it take you it can make your imagination run wild. There is no better feeling than playing Atari on a rainy night or to the sounds of crickets out your window.

I would like this if shown how to hook up the cables from the tv, to make it cordless as i tried to connect the game, was complicated. A vidio would be great.

Well not an emulator but you can buy a game called Atari anniversary advance that has a few classic Atari games on it.

Will it play Atari 5200 games?
No, only 2600.
The Atari 2600 games are so graphically primitive and have such basic one dimensional controls by today's gaming standards that they're almost "too retro" to be enjoyable games to play. For retro gaming, my GPD XD is still the best all around retro portable I've ever played in terms of price, performance, control layout, game library and build quality.
Atari games are all those things, yes. I think some of them are still fun to play today, though, especially original games like Demon Attack or Atlantis. But if you didn't grow up with the hardware, it can be a tough system to get into. It wasn't my favorite system even at the time, and still isn't now. But I did grow up with it and still feel a sense of nostalgia for it.

How can you add games
Reynaldo Rivera just download the BIN files from atariage.com and put them on an 8gig or smaller sized sd card. This little unit cant read sd cards larger than 8 gig so make sure it’s 8 or less.

There's a company called At games that made one of these as a Sega genisis.seems they use same moldings.or maybe these can be modified for different consoles

what you have there sir , is an good example of chinese knock off product. bad screen, bad plastic, bad battery list goes on and on... its not just different cardboard box you got the device in,, its compeltly different machine aswell.
Not sure what you mean, but this is an official Atari-licensed product. The early pre-release versions came in a different box.

Ah, I moderate my comments. A lot of the first comments to any video are either offensive or just people being intentionally stupid. I delete anything blatantly racist or anything like "first!" that come in within seconds of the video even being posted. These aren't actually comments on the video, they're people looking for attention on someone else's channel. It takes UA-cam a while to update the comment totals.
