Hey Will! Is exporting a particle system animation to Keyshot possible? I animated sparkling water inside a bottle in Blender, but haven't figured out how to open it in Keyshot. Thanks!

I think so, but it's got to be converted to a mesh first, which will probably be a heavy operation in Blender. But once it's done, then it can be exported as Alembic or FBX I believe.

    Good video as always.
I have an existential question for you. I'm in the middle of a project that involves animation. I installed a powerful GPU, because with my processor it would take me decades. Indeed the GPU is much faster. It renders in 5% of the time it takes the CPU. But... in Keyshot the GPU renders do not have the quality of the CPU ones, I did several tests and it is not the same. I did tests with Blender and there is no difference between the CPU and GPU renders, so I assume it is a weakness of Keyshot. Can I get the same results in Blender as I get in Keyshot? Would you recommend it? Or is there a way in Keyshot to achieve the same result with the GPU as with the CPU?
    Thanks in advance Mr. Gibbons

Good question. So, CPU to GPU parity is supposed to be something the developers at KeyShot have been working on since introducing GPU rendering. They are two different render engines, so there will always be some difference. But ideally, you work in either GPU or CPU and do no switch back and forth.
I can't speak to what has allowed Blender to reach better parity between CPU and GPU than KeyShot has. To comment on that, I'd need to know more about the code, and I'm not a developer.
If you're asking if Cycles in Blender is capable of making renderings as nice as KeyShot can, I think the answer is yes. It just may take more time and effort.

@@WillGibbons Thanks for your reply. I'm going to redo everything from scratch (importing the model, assigning materials, environment, etc.) in GPU mode to see how the result is.

@@csar9097 I've never really had too much difference in CPU/GPU while using Keyshot. I really doubt that this is can be seen as a "weakness".

@@BiefBinkDVS Well, in my case there are noticeable differences. Especially in anisotropic materials and in materials that have bump effects. And there are a lot of documented cases on the web with translucent, transparent and other materials. In my opinion it is a weakness because I expect consistency in the result regardless of the rendering engine used. Achieving this consistency between different engines is possible and Blender is the proof. Hopefully Keyshot will achieve it soon too.

FBX is really solid. It's a shame it wasn't open sourced and we ended up with GLB and USDZ doing the same things but competing with one another. Have you tried taking GLB and USDZ into Keyshot with the animations?

    • @WillGibbons

No, not yet. Admittedly, I've got limited experience with these other formats. I have used Alembic historically and would like to find out why it didn't work for me this time.

@@WillGibbonsI’ve also used .abc with success In the past, but just last week tried It and it imported all wonky into Keyshot. I wasn’t aware I could do .fbx as animation, I’ll try that tomorrow.

I feel like .abc files works with simulations, like cloth and liquid. I had made a water simulation which you can just export as .abc and then just drag and drop into Keyshot

Maybe it has to do with the baking you need to do as a simulation.... hmm.

but why not render in blender

My company uses Keyshot for all our product renders. I often already have my full scene with assets textured and ready to render in Keyshot when all I need is something like this buckle to be animated. It would be a lot of work to bring everything into Blender and essentially start from scratch.

Thanks for sharing your example @Rex, I'm aware that this is a pretty common scenario and it's what I had in mind when making this short video.

keyshot is faster, with a range of preset materials, realistic, although it has the compatibility defect sometimes
