I think there’s also an element of audiences wanting to relate to musicians more than actors. Both actors and musicians deal in emotions, but musicians are the only ones criticized for not being authentic because we accept that the actors are playing characters. Musicians are often playing characters too, but being perceived as inauthentic can be a death sentence.
It’s very interesting because I feel like it really depends on the type of role you take on. What is actually impressive w Drake and Gambino is the contrast between their roles and their music persona
I was surprised there was no references to these things: Michael Cera’s album with the one cover folk song which went viral on tiktok in more recent years Jared Leto and Thirty Seconds to Mars, he was mostly known as an actor in the 90s then became kinda obscure and his band took off then he used that to leverage growing his acting career. Keanu Reeves was in Dogstar in the 90s but they weren’t super successful however they’ve reformed recently. I know it’s not “acting” but Loiter Squad. Jason Schwartzman / phantom planet / coconut records Zooey Deschanel’s band she & him Elvis, Michael Jackson, the ramones, and the other “classic artists” who have appeared in movies I was gonna say wallows but you briefly mentioned them once I do agree the ones who are in bands or use aliases or appear as themselves in media seem to be more successful overall generally speaking
I think as a musician you can take greater artistic risks than as an established actor. Certain lyrical subjects might jeopardize your Hollywood career.
yea i like his music a lot but when i saw him at gov ball a few years ago it felt like there was a guy off stage with a gun trained on him telling him to perform lmao
bro how do you find time to make / produce songs, music videos, run this UA-cam channel and teach. like where do you find the work ethic to do it all and make time?? actual serious question, I'm inspired by watching from afar

yeaaa man there's so many examples haha. I really just wanted to unpack why they're perceived so differently as mediums
