US backed Mujahedeen fighters beat down the administration over the 80s until the government collapsed in 1992 and a civil war primarily between the Islamic State of Afghanistan and the Taliban. -(30th January 1989) A helicopter provides cover to a joint Afghan-Soviet convoy bringing food and fuel to Kabul. Not long after this photo was taken, Guerrilla fighters attacked the convoy and brought down this helicopter. -(19th October 1986) Afghan President Mohammed Najibullah (Served from 1987 to 1992) greets fresh Red Army soldiers arriving in Kabul. -(1988) Guerrilla Mujahedeen fighters use an American provided FIM-92 stinger missile against Soviet aircraft. -(1988) Same context as above. *ANGOLA*: Summary of events: Upon gaining independence from Portugal in 1975, the state of Portuguese Angola became the People's Republic of Angola, a Communist state. -(Unknown date) Leader of UNITA, Jonas Savimbi, in a village. -(Unknown date) Cuban Troops near the frontlines to aid the MPLA in fighting. -{Unknown date) Couldn't find photo's backstory *ROMANIA*: Summary of events: In 1947, King Michael I of Romania abdicated and with him came the monarchy. The Soviets installed the People's Republic of Romania in his wake and put General Secretary Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej in charge. In 1965, Gheorghe died and Nicolae Ceaușescu came into power. As the 1980s came around, Nicolae and the Communists began to slowly loose their grip on power and a violent revolution occurred. -(21st December 1989) Attempting to calm the growing violence and unrest, Nicolae stood up to give a speech in Bucharest that was intended to settle the problems at least temporarily. All over the country on almost every channel this speech was broadcast live, but it quickly became a disaster. People in the crowd began to ridicule and interrupt Nicolae before he could speak. This speech essentially made him look like a fool, and just 4 days later on Christmas Day the helicopter he was fleeing in was grounded by the army and everyone with Nicolae was tried and executed. -(21st December 1989) Anti-Communist rebels wave the flag of the National Salvation Front (The Romanian flag with the Communist emblem cut out) at Nicolae's speech. -(24th December 1989) A Romanian civilian fires a rifle at a pro-government position after the revolution has reached peak anarchy. -(24th December 1989) Romanian soldiers take cover during a shootout. -(25th December 1989) Nicolae and his wife Elena are put on trial by the National Salvation Front. Stricken with poverty and under the control of ruthless dictators, at one point North Korea was even seen to be a better place to live than it. Students at Chonnam National University protested against dictatorial rule in the country were violently attacked and massacred by the military, leading to international backlash. -(18th - 27th May 1980) Protesters gather around a fountain in front of the former South Jeolla Provincial Government building and stretch the South Korean flag out over the top of it. -(1988) The Olympic Torch is lit at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. *SYRIA* Summary of events: -(1980s) Syrian Commandos in Lebanon. -(1980s) Syrian president Hafez al-Assad gives a speech, may or may not be from the 1970s. *POLAND* Summary of events: In the 1980s there was a severe economic crisis in the Polish People's Republic that lead to a severe strike in the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk. These strikes spread across the entire country until eventually in 1989, the regime toppled and the Polish Solidarity Trade Union won an extreme victory in partially free elections, leading to complete democracy in the country. -(5th August 1980) Lech Walesa gives a speech to workers during a strike in the shipyards. -(1981) Polish President Wojciech Jaruzelski in his office. -(13th December 1981) Polish T-55 tanks moving towards Poznan to put down protesters and strikers. -(31st August 1982) Units of the Citizens' Militia race to put down protesters. -(1980s) Polish Martyr Jerzy Popiełuszko during a service. -(1981) Popiełuszko meets with strikers in the shipyards. -(1982) Lech Welesa is held up by strikers in celebration. -(1980s) Couldn't find source, but looks like Lech Welesa meeting with Jaruzelski -(1980s) Also couldn't find source, but yet again looks like Lech Welesa giving a speech to strikers. -(1980s) Jaruzelski with government officials. -(6th February - 5th April 1989) Members of the Polish Round Table gather at the round table in an attempt to diffuse civil unrest in the nation. -(1989) Welesa casting his vote in the first free election. *PHILIPPINES* Summary of Events: In early 1986, the People Power Revolution swept through the Philippines briefly due to the combined factors of the assassination of Benigno Aquino Jr. on the 21st August 1983, fraud in the 1986 presidential elections and years of autocratic rule. -(22nd - 25th February 1986) Military vehicles move through the streets to put down protestors. -(25th February 1986) Corazon Aquino is sworn in as the 11th President of the Philippines in San Juan. *PARAGUAY* Summary of Events: In the 1980s, Paraguay was slowly edging its way out of being a rural country, with the amount of people in cities growing steadily year by year. From 1967 to 1974 Greece had been ruled by a Military Junta called the Party of the Colonels. Just a month after the Junta ended in August 1974, Greece went to war in Cyprus fighting against Turkey. When the 1980s came around, Greece had a huge economy spike and living conditions in the country began to improve greatly as Democracy returned to the nation. -(March 1980) A street in Thessaloniki. -(1980s) A street in Athens. *IRAN* Summary of Events: Up until 1979, Iran had been viewed by many of its citizens as a western puppet. The country was ruled by a Shah, who many people were discontent with. In early 1979, the Shah was deposed and the Islamic State of Iran was declared, ending an ancient monarchy. Iran became a brutal dictatorship with a severe lack of civil rights after this and quickly unaligned itself with the west

Just a month after the Junta ended in August 1974, Greece went to war in Cyprus fighting against Turkey. When the 1980s came around, Greece had a huge economy spike and living conditions in the country began to improve greatly as Democracy returned to the nation.

Iran became a brutal dictatorship with a severe lack of civil rights after this and quickly unaligned itself with the west
