Dell, That was a great tutorial and nice to see how it's done. Not sure it would suit the style of my blades but appreciate the knowledge you have shared. All the best Sandy
I have never done any acid etching. I have watched so many videos on it, and yours is TOPS!! I may just pull the trigger and do some acid etching soon. . . . Maybe.
Thanks for a great tutorial Dell, it couldn't have come at a better time for me, as I have just got delivered some acetone, ammonia and baking soda this week to go with my FC and have a try at etching myself. Very helpful advice indeed, I like the second stage of dipping, it really unifies the flame design. That blade is just sweet - really elegant, with a bite out of what makes a kukhuri iconic, perfect design!
The black is from the acid/vinegar that can be rubbed off with a scotchbrite. Do it a few more times and it will darken the blade and put a cool tie dye effect as well.
Thanks Dell, great tutorial. I've had a couple of goes but didn't leave it long enough clearly. I like the idea of the double etch with the logo done in between. I may try that on my next knife. Had to read up why Iron chloride (a salt) forms an acid but apparently it's on hydrolysis with water. I'm a biologist not a chemist.
Can you tell me about the Ferric Chloride that you are using. Is it full strength or is it cut like 4 to 1 with distilled water or maybe vinegar? great video and a good looking knife.
Great video mate, in the cut between the paint removal and the logo etch, it appears you have rubbed the blade down with something to give it a 'worn' look (which looks great). What did you rub it down with to achieve this? Cheers
Thank you for the awesome video! I finished etching my first blade and realized that when I go to sand scales so they are flush with the tang it will scratch and remove the etch on the tang. How do you fit and finish your handles so the visible tang is still etched? Thanks!
There's a handful of different ways depending on the scale material and how they're fitted to the knife. In this case, as they're held on with removable bolts, I fully shaped and finished the scales before etching the blade. Then simply bolted it all together. Hth, Dell
@@DirtyRoomKnives Thank you for the speedy response and assistance! Since I didn't realize this before etching, I think I'm going to 1) bolt fit and shape scales 2) remove scales 3) remove all etching on tang edge 4) etch just tang as close to original color 5) try to blend into original etch with steel wool/oil 6) assemble handle. Not sure if it will work but worth a shot and will do the right sequence on the next one. Thanks again!
I've asked this same thing in other forums. I was told to use some sacrificial pins, put it together and then shape the handles. Use a punch to push out the sacrificial pins then acid etch the blade, reassemble with the final pins and epoxy.
Nice and very clear video!! One think that I have not understand is the name of the acid that you use could you write me sorry But i don’t understand very well the English Thanks so much!
If I understand your question correctly, they're basically the same thing. The only difference is that acid etched uses a resist to etch a design on to the blade. If your blade is already acid washed, as long as it's clean from contaminants- oil, wax, etc, it can be further acid etched.
@@DirtyRoomKnives Well, I ordered a kukuri that has an acid washed blade. I would like to acid etch a message on the blade. I don't know if this would be possible. If the etch would actually show on the blade.
@@charlesharper7292 if it's acod washed you should be okay. Make sure to clean the blade thoroughly with acetone. If it's a different coating though I can't say what'll happen.
a true masterpiece mate, brilliant skill level and understanding of materials and liquids. and shared for free. thanks man

Yet another mysterious process made to look 'doo'able' ...
Love these 'how to's' ... love em to bits...

Awesome work, it’s also great to see a fellow Brit doing this sort of work! Thanks for the tutorial, it really helped!!
Very nice effect. Beautiful knife. Thanks for sharing.
You are a wizard my dude. Incredible work and craftsmanship
Great demo, Del, thanks for sharing. Looks fantastic.
Hey man, I love this vid! Quick question for you. How do you get that logo etched SO deep??
The black is from the acid/vinegar that can be rubbed off with a scotchbrite.
Do it a few more times and it will darken the blade and put a cool tie dye effect as well.
it looks f**king awesome 👍🏻 gonna do it tomorrow and see how it turns out !
Looks great Del. nice idea👍
Awesome job, thanks for sharing. GF1
You're welcome.

Like it, I have a question, which liquid is in the little green bottle, you put on your edge???
Nail varnish
wow it's nice to see the true spirit of art and craft l salute you sir ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Frickin' far out man. That was a nice blade to begin with but now it's straight-up banging. You do the blade and the scales yourself also?
Thanks, and yes indeed, this is one of my knives.
Can you tell me about the Ferric Chloride that you are using. Is it full strength or is it cut like 4 to 1 with distilled water or maybe vinegar? great video and a good looking knife.
Is it still sharp after you dip it into the ferric chloride? Or you have to sharpen it again?
Where do you get your maker stencils made up? I can't find anywhere that does custom labels. Best tutorial I've seen so far man.
If you're UK based go to- Ostling Etchmark, or USA- Ernie Grospitch is the man
Very cool video! Thanks for sharing! I really need some stickers with my logo to etch my knives too.
what type of paper or material do you use for the logo paper
Great looking knife, can you do a video of how you did the handle please.
Very nice ! Just wish I knew where to buy those bad ass looking blanks Reddog
Excellent. Simple and to the point.
From one Englishman to another... Cheers my man
Beautiful work
Hi! Really a nice work 😉 do you dilute ferric chloride?
Vrry cool. Nice knife worth the time I think.
Cool. What kind of wood for the handle?
Very nice. Thank you.
Dang man, that's a beautiful job! 😃
I have a few question about everything I need to buy to do this. Would you mind giving me a list of what I need to buy?
How do you make your logo? And how did you etch it in?
Yeah that's my question too.., it was etching twice but how..? And it glew shining dark.., how..? please response sensei.. 🙏
Same question. Where do you get your logo
hi just wondering would this work on brass and if i wanted a really deep like engraved deep how long would i leave it for
that's awesome I never knew that was how acid etching was done
How did you do the logo? Was it electric etching or acid etching? Can you post a video of doing a logo? Thanks! Great Video!

Ignore...... paused and posted this before I saw the final stage!
Nice vid Brit ! I noticed the dark color of the blade prior to etching. How did you accomplish this or did the blank come that way ? Thanxx !
It's sand blasted. And no pre-cut blanks here bud ;)

White spirits is rubbing alcohol?
Love your tutorials, Dell. Thank you for taking the time to do this, bruv. :-)
ok
tank You brother for answer me!
very nice your knifes!
will the acid protect from fruit acid on 01 steel ?
where did you get your stencil from?
What's the name of the acid
Are y'all still allowed to have blades?
Between each 20 minute acid dip what are you dipping the blade into? Is that plain water or are you putting it in a sodium bicarb bath?
No need to neutralise between dips, so plain water will do then a scrub with bicarb after the final rinse
Webber Handmade Knives , thank you :)
Very cool bro!

Thanks so much!
No problem. The acid is ferric chloride
wow i want one!
You da man...totally awesome!!!
Can i use muriatic acid for etching?
I know some US makers use muriatic for etching damascus, but I don't know how strong it is or how deep it'll etch
Dirty Room Knives thank you sir
But, how did you do your logo?
did you use the same method to etch the logo?
The logo was electro etched
Hope you are well, Can you make a black dog 6 without the serrated part ? thank you.
Absolutely, drop me an email bud- redpathknives@gmail.com

Very nice!
Stunning
butiful 👍🏻
Ferric chloride is for sale at various strengths many say they are for PCBs ie copper .
What strength is needed to etch steel ? Anyone help ?
Hi can you do this to a couple of my knives I have an Esse 6 and Ezula 2 that needs doing and how much
Thanks :))

Ive followed your tutorial and everything turned out great but when wiping off the nail polish it smeared n took to the acid wash😭
excuse me, what spray is?
before the rubing with the Steel wool
WD40
What grit do you sand to before the etching?
I was wondering the same thing. It looks sand blaster to me
Damn very nice!
Impresionante 👍

Is this guy mumbling or is it Brit-speak? TG for closed-captions! Interesting anyway. Creates an interesting look!
