I read that if you have a black wire going to the defrost timer then put the black jumper on the #2 terminal. If you have a white wire, then put it on the #1 terminal. The other wires going to the timer will be the same in either condition (pink, red, and orange). I followed these steps since I couldn't find the wiring schematic, and it worked!
My Kitchen Air fridge built in Nov 1999 had quit cooling properly. The evaporator in the freezer section was a complete block of ice and frost. I had already cleaned the compressor/condenser compartment behind the fridge and determined that the compressor was running and the suction line was very cold. So my problem was inside the cold compartment of the fridge. This video on this page was extremely helpful. However, their tech had both a wiring diagram for the fridge and a manual for changing out the timer. My replacement timer only came with screws & nuts. Which I needed. Plus, I could not find a wiring diagram on-line. So here is my workaround. Follow the nice video and remove the control panel and then the Defrost Timer. Next remove the wiring connector from the timer. Take a pic of the connector and if the Timer has the terminals numbered on the bottom, take of pic of that. I found a copy of the service manual for replacing the Defrost Time on another website. Old and bad resolution, but readable. There are 3 procedures illustrated for where to connect the Black pigtail wire. Procedure#1 did not list the wire colors at the defrost timer connector, but Procedures 2 & 3 did. My fridge, which is a KitchenAid KSRB27FHSS02, had wire harness wire colors matching Procedure #2. I wired the pigtail according to the manual. Turned the power back on and the Defrost Cycle in the Freezer started working immediately. The timer has a grey control knob that advances the timer manually. The indicator on the flat grey knob pointed to the Timer's "pointer. You can rotate this knob with a screwdriver, and you will hear the contacts engage when you align the knob indicator with the pointer on the Timer. It shuts off the compressor & fans for around 20 minutes every 8 hours. And simultaneously starts the defrost heater element in the freezer (behind the white metal freezer panel). The temp in the freezer/fridge will elevate during this cycle and pull down very cold quickly after the cycle is finished and the compressor and fans start running again. Please note that I also had already replaced the heating element and the bi-metal temperature sensor in the freezer. The heating element was "open" with a Volt/Ohm Meter test and the bi-metal temp switch was cheap, so I replaced both while I had the panel off. If you are ordering parts, get the Defrost Timer, the Heating Element and the Bi Metal temperature sensor. Barring other issues, you will have the 3 parts your need and you will spend under $75. My fridge works just like new again. Here are the procedures from the Repair Manual. If you can contact me through You Tube, I will gladly email the PDFs of the manual. Worth printing out and putting them in a Zip Lock bag and tape to the back of the Fridge. But here they are typed in by hand. Procedure 1 - Connect Black Wire to Defrost Timer Terminal 2 Wires Connected to Defrost Timer Plug 1. Instruction Sheet Omits The Wire Color 2. Instruction Sheet Omits The Wire Color 3. Instruction Sheet Omits The Wire Color 4. Instruction Sheet Omits The Wire Color When wired correctly will provide Defrost every 8 hours of compressor runtime after Bi-Metal switch closes (contacts close). If my wire colors did not match to Procedure 2 or 3, by process of elimination, I was ready to assume that Procedure #1 was applicable. Do this at your own risk. Procedure 2 - Connect Black Wire to Defrost Timer Terminal 2 Wires Connected to Defrost Timer Plug 1. Black Wire 2. Pink Wire 3. Red Wire 4. Orange Wire When wired correctly will provide Defrost every 8 hours of compressor runtime after Bi-Metal switch closes (contacts close). Procedure 3 - Connect Black Wire to Defrost Timer Terminal 1 Wires Connected to Defrost Timer Plug 1. Orange Wire 2. Pink Wire 3. White Wire 4. Red Wire When wired correctly to a refrigerator's accumulated run clock, the replacement timer will provide defrost every 8 hours of compressor runtime after Bi-Metal switch closes (contacts close).
These videos are great but do you have troubleshooting videos? Every few days the fridge Whirlpool ED22UQXGW00 stops cooling. We turn it off to defrost and it works. I have checked defrost heater and get 27.2 ohms so that is probably not the problem. How do I troubleshoot to see if it is the Defrost thermostat or the defrost timer?
My old timer did not have the black jumper wire. The new one does, but it also does not seem to be working properly, as it has gone 24 + hours without defrosting. What is the purpose of the black jumper, and perhaps can I remove it from its pin or my model ?
Hi Your video are well done.My Whirpool fridge doesn`t cool down and my freezer has built up ice on the inside back panel..I also heard a continuous 10times clicking noise where the defrost timer sits.Could my timer be the problem?. I unpluged the fridge for a day to let it defrost and plug it back in it was fine for a week than it started to not not cooling down again,Thanks
+Avesuccess If the defrost timer is clicking it could be a bad motor or gear. You can test the heater and defrost thermostat for continuity to test them. Remember the defrost thermostat should have continuity when cold and not when warm.

I have a whirlpool gladiator freezer with model GAFZ21XXRK02 serial EW3314712 can you tell me where to find the timer defrost in my model to replace the part? Help please!!!!
Why doesn't the original timer have a black wire? I'm looking to order a new timer but don't know if I need the black wire or not. My original does not have it.
Hi Appliance Pro. The old timer is the exact one. Could not find a wiring diagram for the Kenmore Model 106.67067791 Since the old timer is same in video, is it safe to connect lead to pin 1 on new timer like in video? Thanks
+ArcSolStudios You can look around the appliance for the wiring diagram. I would suggest posting the problem along with the appliance model number on our repair forum and the techs can help you troubleshoot the problem. forum.appliancepartspros.com/
The other parts in the circuit are the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. If it was unplugged and defrosted during the repair it may take up to 24 hours to start the defrost cycle. The thermostat has to get cold enough to let it cycle. They can both be tested for continuity, the heater should have continuity, the thermostat should have it when its cold and not have continuity when its warm.
When i install this defrost timer... How i know if this timer is not in the defrost cycle. Do i have any setting to do after the installation or i just let it run by itself?
+BC Flying Mode You do not have to set the timer. If the compressor does not start right away it could be in defrost, just give it a little while and the cooling cycle should start.
Hi, i have a maytag frididge/freezer model number GT1626BAS, i removed the faulty timer but i forgot to mark the 4 wires, do you have a picture showing the 4 wires order, the timer located in the back of fridge and doesn't have a plug to reinstall in the right order, but ih has just 4 wires, if you can email me the 4 wires location in that timer , i have blue, yellow , white and purple, so which one goes to number 1,2,3 and 4? thank you in advance.

I just changed my defrost timer on my GE Profile, but I'm still confused about the cycles. When it's in defrost, what's actually happening? What is the cycle called when it's cooling the fridge off or down?
+Michelle Delgadillo During defrost it shuts the refrigerator down and turns the defrost heaters on to defrost the evaporator coils. If it is not in the defrost cycle it should be in the run/cooling cycle.
I have version 1 cumulative, so it says hook up to terminal 2 , my question is if this is the other power wire to the timer to cause timer to run # two only has power in defrost mode so timer will only run in defrost mode
My take on this; keep in mind that the defrost timer receives continuous power at the terminal one position. When the defrost timer (if its designed for an 8 hour cycle) reaches the end of its cycle, it goes open for 30 minutes and turns on the defrost heater for the 30 minute period. After 30 minutes, the defrost heater turns off and the timer resorts back to zero again for another 8 hour cycle. By using the number one position, the cycle of the defrost timer will never be interrupted unless the fridge is unplugged. In other words, it will activate the defrost heater 3 times daily in a 24 hr. period. The position two terminal only receives power when the compressor is running, which means when the compressor is idle, the defrost timer receives no power (no matter where its position is in the 8hr cycle) and will only resume the cycle again when the compressor turns back on. Much more cost effective. Note! when the defrost heater comes on, I believe it activates the fridge's thermostat which keeps the compressor running during the 30 minute defrost heaters time period . In other words, the increased warm from the defrost heater activates the thermostat which causes the compressor to turn on and activate the circuit which brings a continuous supply of power to the defroster timer. Obviously when the compressor turns off, the defrost timer is operative. : o )
