  • To finish our custom A Pillars I need to wrap them with upholstery materials or paint them. In this case I chose a headliner material that matches the vehicle interior but you could also use vinyl, suede, tweed, or another automotive fabric. What adhesives should we use? DAP Weldwood? Spray Glue? Here's the process!

    Flashy has its place. If you're doing a custom build, where you'll have multiple custom components, then flashy can look really cool. If you're just upgrading a stock speaker system into a stock vehicle, I think there is nothing better than an aftermarket job that looks stock.

    I definitely like the stealth/OEM look. I drive a Jeep Wrangler with a soft top, so theft is always an issue, so I don't like making nice expensive stuff stand out, as that is just screaming "STEAL ME" to thieves lol

    This guide is going to be a great help to me, I recently built a pillars but haven't finished them off and wanted to wrap them but haven't done a whole lot of that. They are just like yours with the angle of the mid but mine also has a tweeter. Complex shapes.
    Thanks so much Mark, you do an excellent job, wish there were more youtubers like you

    • @guitarman3100
      @guitarman3100 6 років тому

      As true as that might be, this is for my personal vehicle and this is a fun hobby for me. The way i see it, it doesn't hurt to do a little extra work to make sure it comes out just the way you want. I've already done a bit of body work to it and I'll probably still use some sandable primer to finish it off before I wrap them. Thanks though

    • @CarAudioFabrication
      @CarAudioFabrication  6 років тому +7

      The smallest imperfections will show through vinyl, even more so if using a thin material like I did, so... Do the body work.

    This and the previous videos are good info for refinishing trim panels, whether one is adding a speaker to it or not. There is so much that can be done to customize the interior appearance of the car, and recovering trim pieces is not too challenging and doesn't need expensive tools. Totally fun stuff!

    I like stealth myself. When everything blends together from color matching, design or even, thread in the stitching. It really ties everything together making for a clean great looking interior or exterior.

  • @b1pig
    @b1pig 6 років тому

    Mark, I enjoy both. Stealth installs (in my opinion) can be harder to pull off well. It requires the installer/designer to accept what is already there and either hide or blend new elements into the interior in a way that either compliments the stock interior or makes it invisible. Flashy show/competition systems are also appealing for the obvious reasons. Freedom of design and design allow a more artistic approach.

    getting the actual headliner to match it up is awesome. going above and beyond in the attention-to-detail to blend things into the vehicle styling imo is the best practice. makes for a more impressive build when people have to look for the equipment

    To answer your question, every build has its own essence, and you should follow whatever that Essence is telling you, because though you are the creator of the project. There's something that goes beyond that in art and science/ engineering that we need to listen to more

    My opinion on the fabric: I love that factory look, they looks so good. Great work Mark, i have the same headliner material, and didnt wanna do a-pillar pods because I wanted it to match. Now i'm motivated for some pods. I never thought about removing the padding to use it that way. Amazing idea and i'm gonna borrow that from you.

    Absolutely OEM master race. I think people only settle for "exotic" (outside of show circumstances and very artsy people, of course) because they lack the skill or confidence to pull off what you make look so easy. Keep up the amazing work, this build has been a huge inspiration to me!

    Something I learned working with a few pro's was use wax paper to cover the panel to be covered, it will help keep the cloth from bonding to the panel when you are working on it.. not for every install but will help on some of them

    In regards to your question. ( Great attention to detail. I'm hooked at your quality of work)
    I think it matters what type of vehicle you are installing it into, the quality/value of the speakers, if you are selling the system with the car, or keep it. If the car is not worth much I would go flashy but if it's a luxury car I would go seamless. Making it look OEM appeal to more people for resale. I noticed you purchased a replacement from the salvage yard. This is a great idea and saves you a lot of work if you don't want to repeat that project for the same car. Hopefully, if someone does try to reuse them they are purchasing a similar vehicle and they fit. My current vehicle is a 2006 and I plan on making my next vehicle a 2016 which has a 3.5 installed in the door. In this case I would not need to keep it. Unless I wanted to add more mid : )
    Just a thought.

    My vote.. I like "integrated" for a daily SQ car vs "flashy".. Flashy has it's place for show cars certainly, but for SQ the less it draws attention to the installation I think, the better. Pillars are really turning out sharp Mark! That's gonna jam!

    Mark, beautiful build, and awesome tip of using headliner material + painting the color of the foam backing. Color match is a challenge, and this might be the best answer.
    re: question of the episode - My favorite install style is not necessarily "stealth", but more of a "how it should have come from the factory if they actually cared".
    Auto manufacturers (for the most part) seem to design an interior and THEN say "oh, crap, where can we stuff this 5x7 whizzer? I found this tweeter in the trash, lets make it and audiophile system!"
    Clean installs that aren't ashamed to display a driver if the placement adds to the sound stage is my favorite.

    I'd say a mixture of both. Some builds are flashy and stand out and some are stealth. It's nice to see how a pro does both types of build. I personally like watching flashy better because there is a lot more personal creativity on this builds. But depending on the vehicle stealth builds can be just as nice and creative.

    I know this answer is coming almost a year after you asked the question BUT at times I like the interior stuff to "look stock" and blend in all "stealth like" BUT in the trunk where you see things like Amps and Sub Woofers, I like flashy and in your face!! The reason I am like that, is because if a "would be car stereo thief looks inside the car I want them to think "there is nothing to see here" and meanwhile had he looked in the trunk, he would have realized just how "over the top" the system really was!!

  • @garypoole5841

  • @endall39
    @endall39 6 років тому

    Regarding your question, somewhere in the middle. I like to see a well integrated system, but not necessarily "stealth" installs. Your a-pillars are a great example. I like to see things done in such a way that you can imagine the OEM might have done it if they cared about really great sound quality, including imaging and staging. OEM will stick a tweeter in an a-pillar to raise the stage a bit, but no car maker is going to put the mid up there too. They should, but they won't. OEM systems are getting way better, but they're not going to get to audiophile SQ in cars that cost under $100k, at least not yet. Outrageous systems are fun to look at but not to live with.

    I know I'm late to the party but I'm a new subscriber to this channel and I wanted to answer your question man. Personally I like my install to be as clean as possible and blend into the other interior of the vehicle as much as I can. I have a project vehicle that I haven't done much work to in awhile after watching your videos it has really made me think of a few things to do with the vehicle, after the engine, transmission and suspension work is done anyways. See after I finish a project I like the feeling of accomplishment when someone looks at me and says "you did that all yourself?" I've torn out complete stereo system installs before because people did horrible wiring and honestly I've seen worse from that point on. I've seen all kinds of thing from head units being shimmed in by a 2 by 4(literally just shoved in under the head unit to hold it in by tension) to even exposed wiring everywhere making it highly dangerous. Usaully when someone asks me to check out there system install I will go from a-z and pull out head units and everything. It's quite horrible at times because people will ask for help then give me attitude for repairing the whole entire install. Do it right the first time and there would be no issues. The problems with the installs are usaully a lot of incorrect variables inbetween everything. I got off subject though. A clean install is what I prefer. In my opinion if it doesn't look like it's supposed to be there then it usually just doesn't look right at all. Keep up the good work man. Your builds are top notch.
