As an RS3 owner, having previously owned an S3, I bought the engine, and I have no regrets. Both cars are wonderful, and the torque splitter is great, but it's all about the 5-cylinder IMO. You buy the RS3 literally for the engine. But I doubt most people would be disappointed with either
@@maverick4177couldn’t agree more, i owned an A3 8V and than i got a Q3 Sportback as a company car and i knew the quality will be a bit lower but it is a LOT worse. And the plug in hybrid drivetrain is just bad.

The RS3 torque split is a nice addition, but I think the exterior looks way less sporty than the old S3. Maybe even the baseline 8Y with S-line looks sportier than this. The chrome things on the grills... that is why Audi has a black trim option (that I got :) But its a great car to drive I think for the size. edit: I am worried how they will destroy a face lifted RS3 in design after seeing this...
Thomas - you are a class act! Always enjoy your objectivity along with voicing your own opinions, using good background discussion. This is one solid looking ride, and it’s refreshing that some manufacturers (Hello USA original brands!!!) are NOT abandoning sedans and coupes. And that exhaust note sounds quite good - no V8, but not bad. Also kudos to lovely Leah!
Absolutely beautiful the only sedan that isn’t too big but can still fit four people comfortably. I also love the interior and how it blends in the infotainment.
Of the German brands, Audi is by far the dominant one at the entry level of the performance range. The MB A/CLA class are good, but the S3/RS3 are markedly better; the BMW 2 range just are not even worth considering until you get to the M2. The standard A3 is an excellent car, the S3 has always been somewhat of a "hidden gem", while everyone is aware of the fire-breathing RS3. I personally would save the US $15,000 to $20,000 over the RS3 and get the S3.
I think the good thing about the A/CLA class is additional options, at least in the US. You can option cooled memory seats, lots of interior lighting, and other stuff that Audi and BMW don't offer in their comparable models. For people who need a compact car like me, it's a good selling point.
Coming from an ‘18 S4, I hope to get an RS3 in a year or two as a retirement gift to self but I refuse to pay markups. Now that the S3 has the diff, I’d consider it as a consolation prize if I can’t get an RS3 for MSRP.
For those that haven't heard, Audi did just replace their head of design, Marc Lichte, with Massimo Frascella. I don't mind the design of current Audis, but I do think it probably is time for a new styling direction. I remember when Marc Lichte first came to Audi he said that he favorite Audi designs were the Sport Quattro and the Trans Am Audi 200 race cars. I think this generation of A3 definitely bears this out.
Nice review Thomas. Interior wise, very proper and nice upgrade vs. the pre-facelift. The 8Y stepped down a lot in the interior vs. 8V. With the facelift 8.5Y, they finally improved it back somewhat...this can be seen from very subtle things (like the 12 V charger cover - it is now with the silver accent like the 8V, better shift paddle as you pointed out, a better armrest pullup mechanism like the 8V rather than the crappy one that broke easily in the 8Y), better material, more accent lighting). Mechanically, the torque splitter is definitely a game changer. The Haldex V was so unreliable with the pump always breaking down. The torque splitter doesn't have that and hopefully would be more reliable. Exterior wise, the Ascari blue is nice, the exhaust is very nice, but the silver accent might need some time to get used to (especially the back ones).
8Y was a massive step up in interior design and quality. This shitting on the new gen fad is getting a bit old, but it's especially ridiculous in case of the A3.

This really hasnt changed enough for me. My calendar year -2021- version has exactly the same seats. Carbon fibre on the dash instead of microfibre. I do like the new grille however. Shame we dont get the OLED rear lights tho. Thanks Leah….great videography! 😍

It feels kinda lame to have to pay thousands extra just to have things black. Why not make things black in the first place? The new bmw x5 is a good example. If you want all black its going to cost you like 5-9k extra with the m sport and pro packages.

So is that the same as the Golf R facelift then? My understanding is that VW/Audi has moved away from a Haldex coupling before the rear diff to a multi plate clutch pack on each side of the rear driven wheels. Is that the case with this S3 facelift?
That "old" steering wheel 😍Had it in my A5 and it's the best looking and best feeling one on the market. Can't believe they switched it out to the tacky ones we see in E-tron Q6 etc.
Loving the chrome rear bumper pattern. Seems to not have the love, but against the dark bumper, it’s a nice highlight. The front chrome number looks much better then the current model. Not keen on the S red square on its lonesome, however so like the model identifier in the glass. Flat bottom sterling wheel - the best !

So VW group revised upwards and gives us 333 hp at this platform, while BMW just introduced 296 hp for equivalent platform!!! Well done VW, shame BMW !!!! Thomas I am amazed with how spacious the A3 sedan is and feels. Comparing to 2 series grancoupe, it feels more spacious and comfortable. Well done one more time, and thumbs up to Akrapovic !!!
what happened to the S3 badge in the front and why is the S3 disconnected from flag logo in the back of the car? What the hell is Audi thinking with their badging?
When most brands decided that making Transformers cars and adding plastic touches to their facelifts was the right design direction? I hope Audi will step back in the next generation bringing more cleaner and curated designs. In other words, please go in the opposite BMW direction!!!!
I am shocked at the new look. I think Audi will lose many customers with this change. The previous 2 gens (2018-2024) looked so aggressive up front that it had the best looking car out there. I traded in my fantastic 2018 S3 in Nano grey for a different brand altogether because I didn't want a car that looked so weak and looked more like 2023 Ford Focus with Audi headlights and tech. Few years ago BMW went massive on their grill because even they could see the great idea look the Audi had. Sadly Audi have done the wrong thing here, they need to keep the 'angry' face because we Audi fans love that look.
Love your review Thomas , but i think we diverge with opinion on styling. The "L" has lost me as a fan of design. the rest is good. I think the sedan is very nice in terms of body. Love the rest of it. I hope audi comes out with something nice. 4.8sec is just almost as fast as the macan S.
I see that there is a free space on steering wheel for driving mode button, so i dont understand why they dont use it, in Sport oriented car like this. Instead you need to switch driving modes on the display :/
New models will never beat old ones when it comes to look and performance. Look at those "L" lines between exhausts , what kind of "gear knob " is that plastic. Look at the dash screen. Im driving RS3 2016, real machine. This new releases are just make up for the girls not the men. Best regards

The biggest improvement they could make is building these cars with dual port injection to avoid carbon build up on the backside of the intake valves.Ya I know I'm delusional.
Got the pre facelift 8Y and it looks much better than this new one. New one looks like an A3, it’s not sporty enough. I admit the torque vectoring rear diff and the extra few ponies are cool but realistically i’m not going to drift my car, and carwow’s drag race already confirmed the pre facelift 8y s3’s 0-60 was a little quicker than this new one.

Lights look a cheap without light diffuser. Like someone put bunch of LEDs behind cheap semitransparent plastic, few years ago.

I've always liked the A3 saloon, but after seeing this I'd go for a BMW M240i given the choice.
Me too definitely. 240 and 340 would be my first options for this category.
So VW group revised upwards and gives us 333 hp at this platform, while BMW just introduced 296 hp for equivalent platform!!! Well done VW, shame BMW !!!! Thomas I am amazed with how spacious the A3 sedan is and feels. Comparing to 2 series grancoupe, it feels more spacious and comfortable. Well done one more time, and thumbs up to Akrapovic !!!

I am shocked at the new look. I think Audi will lose many customers with this change. The previous 2 gens (2018-2024) looked so aggressive up front that it had the best looking car out there. I traded in my fantastic 2018 S3 in Nano grey for a different brand altogether because I didn't want a car that looked so weak and looked more like 2023 Ford Focus with Audi headlights and tech. Few years ago BMW went massive on their grill because even they could see the great idea look the Audi had. Sadly Audi have done the wrong thing here, they need to keep the 'angry' face because we Audi fans love that look.

Love your review Thomas , but i think we diverge with opinion on styling. The "L" has lost me as a fan of design. the rest is good. I think the sedan is very nice in terms of body. Love the rest of it. I hope audi comes out with something nice. 4.8sec is just almost as fast as the macan S.

Im a minority but i love it! People also hated the 8Y when it came out vs the 8V yet people now love the pre-facelift 8Y. Things never change

I see that there is a free space on steering wheel for driving mode button, so i dont understand why they dont use it, in Sport oriented car like this. Instead you need to switch driving modes on the display :/
New models will never beat old ones when it comes to look and performance.
Look at those "L" lines between exhausts , what kind of "gear knob " is that plastic. Look at the dash screen. Im driving RS3 2016, real machine. This new releases are just make up for the girls not the men. Best regards

The biggest improvement they could make is building these cars with dual port injection to avoid carbon build up on the backside of the intake valves.Ya I know I'm delusional.

Got the pre facelift 8Y and it looks much better than this new one. New one looks like an A3, it’s not sporty enough. I admit the torque vectoring rear diff and the extra few ponies are cool but realistically i’m not going to drift my car, and carwow’s drag race already confirmed the pre facelift 8y s3’s 0-60 was a little quicker than this new one.
