Continuing the series, I take a look at all the changes Nicktoons made to Dragon Ball Z Kai when it broadcast in the early 2010's.
This video covers the third quarter of the Frieza Arc.

I thought a lot of this stuff was lost to time; thanks for preserving it and being so thorough! I felt this way back when they aired on Nick, but I'm super grateful the "edited version" of the lines weren't cringey; they still got the necessary story across and preserved all the important character development and personality.

They absolutely DID NOT get the story across cause the english dragonball Z script left out sooooo much that the japanese script covered it was super disappointing, oh and they REALLY censored ALOT from the Japanese script

Yeah, sometimes using synonyms or alluding to death can be more effective than just saying “die” all the time. Avatar: The Last Airbender did a good job with this, which made the rare times they *did* get to use the words “kill” or “die” hit harder. It all depends on how you choose to word things.
Yeah. Sometimes the replacement word isn't so bad.

I originally watched DBZ on toonami. I want to get rewatch it. Which is the best version to watch and where can I watch it? I’ll buy it if needed. Also I keep hearing about the Faulkner score. Does all of DBZ not have that music?
2:06 I find it funny that even the common idiom "I'm dying to..." was altered to avoid even the metaphorical death reference.
That's just how it goes in the PG version I think its a good alternative, and hearing them saying death and dying can get a bit repetitive haha
@@lazyxeno9404Yeah, honestly, most of these changes aren’t that bad. The Toonzai/4Kids version was VERY egregious with how far they changed the series, but the Nicktooms version kept way more than you’d expect, and even let some unedited scenes slip here and there; even Android 18 swearing in the last episode.
A lot of the references to death are still there anyway, just reworded with synonyms. The uncut version is obv still better but it does get a little repetitive just using the word “die”all the time.
Mixing it up and alluding to it in ways that sound cool sometimes sound more effective.
Avatar: The Last Airbender did that, and even though most of those lines are probably just them trying to work around Nick’s strict guidelines, we got a lot of really memorable lines out of it.

And Katara going “If you slip up, if you show *one* sign you’re about to hurt Aang… I’ll make sure your ‘destiny’ *ends.* Permanently.” Over her just saying “I’ll make sure you die.”

Never understood why they treated blood as if kids are never meant to see it, kids scrape their legs and accidentally cut themselves all the time, they probably see more blood than an adult does lmao

But they probably don't want kids seeing people get choked or seeing someone get pierced straight through. There can also be a lot of blood at times, which I guess is why they make it less vibrant sometimes

@@fakeaccount9376, hey I am just attempting to understand the other side. I always watched Dragon Ball as a kid and always will remember when Omega Shenron used dragon thunder on Vegeta. I also grew up with games like Halo and such. I never said anything about my childhood, but it helps to understand why things happen the way they happen, and it usually is not for no reason
@@adamspeiser6449 might be a culture gap between us, but I never played Halo as a kid. I played all parts of half life and postal 2 as a 5 year old tho. And in my country Dragon Ball ain't that popular, we got Naruto on its place. Is Dragon Ball really that big of a deal in the western world?

Lol why? Like yes obviously it's censored but it for the most part keeps the original meaning of the scenes intact. It doesn't go overboard with the censorship unlike many of the other dubs
It's not really any worse than if you watched on Toonami where there was not only a good deal of similar censorship of the violence and language but the entire soundtrack was replaced from the Japanese version and the script was frequently completely different from the Japanese version as well.

Got to say the Nicktoons line of King Kai saying "Piccolo draws breath no more" sounds darker than the Uncut's " Piccolo has been brought down".
It also shows more than tell. Its way better
Not to mention they removed one line prior that was about not drawing breath. They're not even consistent.
@@NicoDoesLPyeah Nicktoons was very inconsistent to the point that they should have just left most of the dialogue and fighting unchanged. I’ll give them credit for trying to keep some of the original tone though.

That line change in the Nicktoons version changes the context behind what Goku said to frieza pretty significantly from the Japanese version

During that DBZ Kai marathon on Nicktoons, I completely gave up on watching dbz kai because of every single censer

And its been 14 years since the show came out… its like some forget that Google exists.
It's honestly impressive how much of the story is kept intact in the Nicktoons version, sure it censors every mention of death but the use of words like "they're gone" and "what you did" make it pretty obvious that's what happened to various characters. They don't actually shy away from it, they just choose their words carefully and only cut out the brutal action scenes to get past censors.
Props to the people who handled these edits, especially whoever trimmed the fight scenes because they pretty consistently picked the right beginning & ending frames to make the cuts seemless.

That's not unique or anything. Go back and watch the DCAU cartoons. Practically every instance of someone punching someone else on-screen has a hit flash.
Thanks for documenting all these changes! I grew up with the Nicktoons version as a kid and watched the uncut version a while later.
I’m grateful how lax the Nicktoons version was with its edits, and some of its line reads and line changes I actually prefer over the uncut version. It’s also crazy how much of the uncut version got slipped into the Nicktoons version, especially instances like Android 18 swearing in the last episode.
The Toonzai/4Kids version went WAY crazier with the edits, even more than the Ocean dub in Z. It’s also thanks to the Nicktoons version that it introduced a whole new generation of fans to the series, just like the Toonami version did (which was also censored in its own right.)
Double thanks for using the Yamamoto music for this. He’s a horrible person for plagiarizing so much of his work, but a lot of his tracks for Kai really left an imprint on me for a lot of people. It’s hard to watch Kai with the Kikuchi score, mostly because they did such a bad job at rescoring it, with the same few tracks over and over when he made hundreds of them for Z. I didn’t start softening up to the original Japanese music until DBZ: Kakarot.
This whole set of videos brings back a lot of memories watching through the series again. Keep it up!

8:00 an interesting double change here that was missed was when it showed Bardock being killed, the Nicktoons version showcases the moment a little later when he starts to smile, whereas the uncut version has him remained stunned. Also the timing of Vegeta and Kid Vegeta’s voices change at different places. Personally I like the nicktoons version when kid Vegeta’s voice changes to adult when he says “Kakarott”

Early 2000s Cartoon Network was savage. I remember them showing all the death scenes as a kid and frieza jumping with an impaled krillin on his horn ugh! 😖
I prefer Goku's "I Am" speech in the Nicktoons version. The uncut version is great, but I prefer the line, "I'm a proud Saiyan who calls Earth home." to "I'm the Saiyan who came all the way from Earth for the sole purpose of beating you." 16:04 That's weird, because Nick has had villains say "perish" before.
I know right? It just sound better and the music made it more hopeful that he knows he's an alien but he will never abandon his true home.

I recall hearing somewhere that a lot of the edits weren’t actually mandated by Nicktoons. I’m inclined to believe that considering that last sentence.

It's interesting that the ocean and funi original dub air in the late 90's and early 2000's is pretty much uncensored compared to this.
It's still censored with things like hfil and tien saying dead ppl will be okay. But it shows the difference a decade makes in terms of what you can show on tv.
When I was a kid I liked the series because of the brutal fights, the blood and the seriousness of the series. It's a pity we can't do it anymore.
It's crazy how much different it actually is and to think that the cartoon Network version of it was even more different.
Kai already as it was it was horrible and a lot of good stuff was already removed from the original version. To censor it even further sucks. I’m so glad I grew up on the original thing.
The original Z dub sounds WAY more sensored and kiddish than even sensord Kai.

I was 5 years old or younger when I saw Bulma with those frogs. I only ever saw that episode once while I was at a daycare. It was the late 90's. I never saw the episode again until the youtube days. They never reran that episode, or if they did I missed it.

The Funimation dub censored, changed, and edited a bunch of other things anyway. Not so much the animation, more so the dialogue, to make everything more cartoony and goofy.

I first watched Dragon Ball Z Kai on nicktoons. I didn't even know it was censored before, but it didn't affect how much I enjoyed watching it for the first time.
14:13 This part in particular is throwing me for a loop because I remember clearly hearing "You ruthless, heartless, bastard"/"I will make you suffer" when I first watched Kai on TV. I even remember mishearing "tch, heartless" as "tortless" at the time. The "Monster"/"You're going to pay for that" version is _completely_ foreign to me.
I watched OG dub, but for some reason, i always remembered Goku saying, "You heartless monster, you're gonna pay for that."
It was always “monster.” I watched it back when it first debuted.
The uncut vereion is 42069x better than the child version

I remember this on nicktoons, it's nice to see them introduced Dragon Ball z to a younger audience, expose a whole new generation to a legendary anime, I just don't like how kid friendly they went with the series. Originally, this show was very gory and heavily targeted towards teens. In a way, I kind of miss that I miss how bloody this show used to be, but you can't please everyone and unfortunately, targeting things towards kids is more profitable
You forgot to mention that In the recap of episode 47, the Narrator also changed the dialog with the Uncut Saying "Piccolo is Quicky Defeated, and then turned his rage on Krillin, Murdering him in cold blood in front of Goku's eyes" to where in the Nicktoons version saying "Piccolo is quickely defeated. As was krillin!" I forgot what the rest of the line was said in the Nicktoons version. Sorry.
That is actually facts because I used to watch dragon Ball z Kai the censored version of course in nicktoons when I was a kid but now I see the dialogue really did change by the original

12:59 I feel like they mixed up the lines here; the uncut one sounds like the more censored one to me and the Nicktoons one is slightly more explicit. That's not the first (or last) time that's happened.
For the second timestamp, that definitely seems to be the case, since at 11:22, they censored Frieza saying “drawing breath.”
I also prefer the lines and Goku’s reaction in the first timestamp in the Nicktoons version, too.

11:22 I don’t get this line at all, in either version. What does Frieza mean, he thought all the Namekians had died already? He literally just fought Piccolo in his second and third form a few episodes ago, and saw him getting healed. Even taunted him and the others in his final form to come at him while he tortured Vegeta.
Was the line different in Japanese, or did he say the same thing here? Did Frieza just forget the others were a thing completely, while he was fighting Goku?

One of these days I'm going to go back and watch Dragon Ball all the way to Dragon Ball Z. Including the movies. I just don't know if I'll skip the Buu Saga or not.
I didn’t include the movies but, watching dragon ball and dragon ball z together is differently recommended
I dunno if I can go through the Buu Saga again lol. If I do, I’ll either watch Kai’s version or breeze through the manga.

i dont remember anything other than the harsh language being removed, i remember when frieza got cut in half, it was completely shown, there was just black voids where his blood was before, and all the blood coughs were spit
When dragon ball z first aired in the UK it was censored, so I saw the no blood version. I remember watching it one day and My older brother said to me in Japan they show blood and they swear\curse sometimes and it was uncut. So the first time I saw the full uncut version wasn’t until we went and got some bootlegs from Japan . It’s crazy because my memory tells me even now there was blood in the UK original version, but there wasn’t because when I watched the uncut versions for the first time it blew me away back then. And Then the English dub remastered uncut official dvds came out and the rest is history🙌
I get it, Nickelodeon tried to make DBZ Kai too family friendly but to be honest. They did to much, I mean they even tried to make Gokus scream when he went Super Saiyan for the first time less scary sounding. It didn’t even sound scary, they did do a good job. They should have just made Sean Shimmel redo the scream.
Aside from the fight scenes being heavily censored, a lot of these dialogue changes aren’t that bad, especially when “bastard” is replaced with “monster”.
I'm a 90s kid and TV wasn't afraid to show us the REAL Stuff. Cartoonnetwork basically played the uncut version. From Tien arm getting knocked off by Nappa to That scary scene where Dr. Gero almost killed Yamcha

Okay, unpopular opinion... that last edit you covered with Frieza launching the Death Ball to the core of Namek... that was a good dialogue change.
When did Bulma die the first time? I don't remember her dying anytime before Namek.
She died in Buu Saga after being turned to chocolate and eaten by Super Buu.

Wait a sec, we got ourselves a retcon. Frieza in the fukkatsu no F was resurrected cut up, Krillian should have been resurrected blown up to bits.
This came before Resurrection F. Also past Dragon Ball characters had their wounds and limbs restored when resurrected like Tien, Giran, even Chiaotzu who blew up like Krillin.

Because they're edited? I mean let's not forget that Z and GT were also edited in similar ways on Cartoon Network.
For money
The Toonami version also heavily edited the series, too. Not as much in terms of violence, but in terms of dialogue, to be more cartoony and lighthearted. “Cat loves food, y-yeah, yeah, yeah.”
The Nicktoons version was also very lightly edited compared to the 4Kids/Toonzai version, and especially the Ocean dub of Z. It’s thanks to the Nicktoons version that it introduced an entirely new generation to Dragon Ball, the same way the Toonami version did, so it did a lot of good.
A lot of uncensored scenes even slipped their way into the Nicktoons version, and when they brought the DBZ movies over, they were edited even less.
@komarunaegi7460 that's how I found our about dragon ball z my brother showed me they were re dubbing kai when I was really little and since he was a fan of the OG on cartoon network he showed me kai on nicktoons and I was ( and still am lol ) hooked to the series games and movies although now that I recognize how bad it since I've seen nearly every version of the show it's far from the worst version of the show and without I prolly wouldn't have gotten into it as much as I have over the years
