The story behind the “shin plasters” that you heard is partially true. Yes you could hide them in your sock. But during the war they used to pay the solders in these 25 cent notes. On the cold wet nights, the solders used to stuff these into their boots to keep them warm, they had no use for the money on the battlefield. The water used to turn it into a plaster material. Thus the name.
North Korean notes are widely available in Turkey (where I am living). I have seen people buying and selling them often (not American citizens). The specimin ones are also easy to find. There must be someone bringing them from North Korea in big quantities, because they are everywhere.
That's interesting. i've learned that some people believe that the N Korean govt actually produces the notes specifically to make money from collectors. Not sure whether it's true or not though lol
The Canadian 1967 date only bills are actually collected by some collectors by the different plate numbers found on the face and back.In the Canadian 1937 issue these bills were issued with three different signature combinations, with the Osborne /Towers signature being the scarcest and most valuable because they had a lower quantity printed before they switched over to the Gordon /Towers signature. In the Coyne/Towers issue the O/M prefix commands a slight premium because it was the crossover prefix from when they discontinued the Gordon/Towers signature, which also carries a slight premium in the O/M prefix.
Thanks a lot, Lou!
The L.1000 note at 5:32 was printed from 1969-1981. The note at 5:55 was for use across the Soviet Union. The pound note at 6:56 was demonetised in 1979 but still redeemable at the Bank of England.
Thanks a lot for the extra info!
Beautiful specimens! Happy holidays man! :)
Thanks a lot man!
So this video is awesome. I am currently on my third tour here in S. Korea and the fact that that you have bills from the northern kingdom is amazing. I have been to to the dmz and i wish i could get those notes.
Wow are you on tour as a tourist or as a soldier?

Very cool story behind the N. Korea notes. I'll have to find the video with your DMZ-purchased notes.
Thanks Michael!
That’s an honest business man 👏
£1 notes are demonitized but I believe that you can still trade them in for a £1 coin (about $1.30)
Thanks WagiKarp!
It's still quite common to get £1 banknotes in Scotland in your change. I have one myself from a few months ago. Depends on which bank the notes are printed from. Danske Bank in NI have them too but they're very rare and people don't really use them. Bank of England got rid of £1 notes in the 80s and I'm pretty sure England just uses one single design and bank of notes.
While not sterling, Isle of Man £1 notes are also still in everyday use.
@@YamezzzzBoE only has one source of notes, unlike Scotland.
You can change old uk bank notes for modern ones at any bank. In the case of pound notes these can be changed for the modern oound coin. Any banknote that says pound sterling on it is legal tender in the uk, hence why scotish and northern irish notes are all legal in England and Wales.
Wow! That ladder I noticed as soon as you put it down. I’m always looking for stuff like that though. That’s definitely a nice one!
Probably one of the coolest notes I've every had
@@Silverpicker In the 2017 issue of the Charlton"Canadian Government Paper Money Catalouge" it has the 1954 modified portrait of the queen one dollar bill with ascending ladder serial number ,priced at $675.00 dollars(Canadian)!!!Quite the find!!!They show a picture of the exact same bill you have 1234567 except it has the prefix O/Z,with the Beattie /Rasminsky signature. It says these (1234567) are particularly desirable, and may sell for higher prices than those listed.
@@SilverpickerCoins and Canada.com has it listed on their website at $550.00(Canadian) in Unc..
Really cool happy holidays
Thanks you too!
I'm a numismatist and philatelist also, as you asked if the 5c stamps, yes, they're not so valuable. Nice North Korean Banknotes, thinking to have those. But North Korean Stamps are legal to go outside, actually I have some CTOs that aren't used but canceled for collectors that sells below denomination price.
That's really interesting. It's not illegal to receive mail from NK?
@@Silverpicker yes but since no one there could access internet easily, the Postcrossers (from postcrossing.com) there are still 0 but there's a UA-cam channel from DPRK about ASMR. So just normal mail and not pen pals.
Love the video
Great collection. Love the North Korea stuff.
Thanks man!!
@Silverpicker, cool video! The North Korean notes were really interesting thanks for explaining them to us. It seems to me that the hydroelectric dam reverse was probably later thought of as a mistake. I believe that initially they wanted to show off their technological advancement in having a hydroelectric dam. But the thing is, now they are really pushing to make us believe or at time eluding to the idea that they are just as advanced as the United States. Merry Christmas 🔥🦈🌊
Certainly a bizarre place
great vid!
Thanks Michelle!
11:13 this is called a plate block. The 4 stamps are at the corner of the sheet, and the number is on the side. Most of the time people just break up all of the stamps to put on envelopes (unless they collect stamps). These might be worth more than face value to people who collect plate blocks edit: the stamps themselves might be worth more than face value too but I am not sure.
Thanks for letting me know!
The 2002 5 win note, I got in a lot on eBay and the listing is still up.
13:02 the smaller 5 KPW note is actually printed in 1998. what's more interesting about it is that there was a note with that same design that was printed in 1992, and the human faces look much better in the 1992 version than in the 1998 version because probably due to effects of the arduous march, they ditched the intaglio style printing and just used litho printing on the entire note, which made the faces look cartoonish
That's super interesting! Thanks!
13:16 they're just unnamed party members. and despited being printed in 2002, they were released only in 2009, and yeah these are still legal tender in north korea (except the 1998 5 won note, which is no longer legal tender)
DPRK notes are actually rather easy to come by. I've heard that they are sold to tourists on the Yalu river (border between DPRK and China). I have several complete series, some bond notes and a couple of bundles of 'specimen' DPRK Won.
That's pretty cool. What exactly are the "specimen" notes?
@@Silverpicker Specimens are produced for a number of reason, mainly to help international banking institutions identify new designs of banknotes. However, some central banks give specimen notes as gifts to statesman, bank officials or auction them off to collectors. However, I believe the DPRK takes it a step further and just prints specimens just as tourist trinkets. The odd thing is, as you say, the regular currency can be obtained quite easily too.
Dude it has been a while great vid :D
Thanks Bubba! Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome bank notes merry Christmas

Do you still have the North Korean notes? I would like to buy them.

Very nice catch on the ladder bank note I would be interested but I need to do some work as to it’s value Which is probably quite substantial. But I will find out.
Thanks Bruce! Would definitely appreciate your thoughts on its value even if you aren't interested in it

"I never know whether these are Russian, Mongolian or from any ofther Soviet state"
Mongolia never was Soviet...
Mongolia was a puppet state as the Mongolian People's Republic from 1921-1992. While yes it was independent, it was largely used as a breadbasket and resource wing by the USSR, who had troops stationed there as well. It was used as a buffer with China especially when the Sino-Soviet split happened, effectively as a barganing chip in case the Chinese ever wanted to reabsorb Mongolia. The only reason it never became a true SSR was because Moscow flat out told them no six times when PM Yumjaagiin Tsedenbal asked.
I have some North Korean notes like the ones you got! I don’t know if they are real
Or not though.
Cool, Connor! Post them on insta and tag me
10:46 the back of the banknote is almost have a similar design with the Japanese government 50 centavos used in The Philippines used during WII.love your videos.i am learning a lot.thank you.from the Philippines.
Interesting. So glad you're enjoying! Did you see my Philippines type set video?
@@Silverpicker Yes.I never miss a single video from you
Hey Silverpicker, I saw a video of yours where you say you have a 1999 Susan B Anthony silver dollar. Did they actually struck a 90% silver Susan B? If so, how do I get one? Thanks!
I do not believe they struck them in silver. If I said something to that effect, it was either a mistake or I said it speculatively while unboxing something and later found out that it was just a proof
Thanks, I knew that was the case. The Susan B was a great coin and should have had a silver version! Ill write my congressman:)
You could easily get $500 bucks for that Ladder bill,.. if I were you,, get it Graded,.. it would fetch a crazy price
That's a good idea!
The note at 13:30 depicts a hydroelectric plant as it is a prominent part of the DPRK's national emblem. I don't know why for certain it's on their national emblem, but it likely has to do something with the importance of industry and how close the hydroelectric plant (on the national emblem) is to Mount Paektu, which is an important cultural landmark in both Koreas.
Also, the note at 13:14 I does not depict Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. I don't remember who the figures on the note are but if I remember correctly one of them made a significant scientific discovery (?). I don't think any other leader than Kim Il Sung has been on a banknote, to my knowledge.
That's super interesting. Thanks for the corrections and added context
12:54 The Korean words translate as "Central Bank of Democratic People's Republic of Korea". The "Central Bank" words come last.
Let's see it!
hey silverpicker, I spent time in Korea in 2018, and went to the DMC. I believe the notes you have are the tourist dollars that can be used and spent by foreigners in the North because I bought the same notes at the DMZ. from what I understand is the North Koreans value the currency as the same value as the South Korean Won. Keeping in mind North Korean Won is not traded on the open market. In my home town of Vancouver Canada, I was able to buy North Korean currency from a gentleman who I met from a friend. The bills he showed me feature the Kim family and are 5000 and 10000 won.
Interesting. I'll definitely have to look further into that. Thanks!
@@Silverpicker I can back Charles statement. I was stationed at Osan AB in South Korea in 2008, and while there I too visited the DMZ. In their gift shop, you can buy North Korean currency. It maybe that is where your currency originated from.

In poor shape about $50, up to several hundred dollars in better shape.
Is the 1954 Canadian ladder serial number $1 bill still available for sale?
Nope, I just sold it
@@Silverpicker Okay, thanks anyways!
The stamps were a plate block, (serial number included), and you would have to look under that category to find the real value.
Thanks Tom!
I do have a 20 Forint note myself, but they are already demonetised (it took place in early nineties). Either way, these days 20 HUF is almost nothing. Nonetheless, it is a cool note.
Thanks Kacper!
There is North korean money on ebay in the uk. Just checked and several of the notes you have are in a lot uo for sale.
They actually had video of him stealing the poster. But still its insane what they did to him.
I think I just found a keeper? How much of a good thing is it to find a five dollar bill from 2013 in like new condition with the s/n ME44444414C is this a valuable bill ? Anybody that van give me any kind of info would be greatly appreciated
Definitely more valuable than its face value, but since it isn't a true "solid," it won't be worth a ton. I'd say it's worth around $100
@@Silverpicker thanks for the info

I need one of them 1967 commemorative dollar bills I didn't know they made the commemoratives in paper 2 it's my birth year
Oh cool! I'm selling them, but it's prob not worth it with shipping unless you wanted to buy some other notes or silver. Instagram me if you're interested
Those us stamps would be worth a good bit about 50c each.
You think so? Why so much?
Because a set of three sold for £2.60 or $3.52 not that long ago. Ps do you have an eBay or something where you sell the coin your selling?
So those stamps are a block of stamps for George Washington. Not much value, as you showed, but they are really cool to have. I have a couple of John Adam and Teddy Roosevelt ones in my collection. Nice find and wonderful video!
Thanks a lot, Ryan!
The 10 peso note at 7:30 does appear to be fake. After doing some research & looking at the quality of your note it appears to be a low quality reprint.
Strange about the 5-cent George Washington postage stamp. On eBay, these stamps are going for between 20 cents and $3.00. Not worth a fortune, in any case.
Indeed :)
I was able to buy some North Korean notes on eBay. Some were were part of a lot of other foreign banknotes. Some were sold separately. I think the loophole is that you don't put "North" in the title. Just Korea.
Yep I noticed that while I was doing my research
Cool lot. I watched a documentary done by Vice about North Korea. Very interesting, a must watch. It will make you think!
Super interesting series. I saw it a few years ago when it came out.
5:48 that is a Soviet 3 Ruble note
Thanks Mark!
Something was for a fraction second at 2:46
This £1 note is no longer in circulation, it ceased to be legal tender in 1979. Today there are no £1 notes, we have £1 coins.
That is true, but you can still trade them in at the central bank
North koreans leave the country quite frequently, well certain ones do. They travel into china and work a regular job usually, i forget why though, i remember it had to do with bringing money back into the country for something.

I bought some No. Korean coins off ebay last year. Ebay will block listings which say No. Korea, but I found it by searching for DPRK.
That's surprising that they don't scan for DPRK also. But sounds like it worked out for you lol!

Oh well worth a shot lol
I've got to say, the new U.S. currency notes are certainly a step, or three, down in the artistry department. The traditional notes they replaced were of much, much higher design value. Our olders coinage from the latter quarter of the 19th century and first third of the 20th were often strikingly beautiful. Morgan & Liberty Dollars, Mercury dimes, Indian pennies and more were functional works of art.
The modern mint had an opportunity to make some real artistic upgrades with the State, and then parks & landmarks quarters, but almost all of projects were wasted on 'Designs by Committee.' (Or worse, states that only allowed design proposals from school children)
Ugly money reflects an ugly opinion of our nation by those who design it and advocate for it. It's time for return to pride in the artistic value of our coin and currency, as well as in America herself.
I agree. I actually have a good idea to redesign our currency
Coool
Careful, Kim Jong Un might come knocking on your door @_@
He wouldn't like to find out what's on the other side of it, I can tell you that 😉
The stamps are common, are worth face value
thanks!
Do the North Korean notes glow in the dark?
😂😂😂
I think those North Korean bills are worth alot more than $5 just since its illegal to take them out of North Korea
Since the NK notes are uncirculated (and mine is too) I sort of wonder if they earmark some for export as a way to generate revenue and spread their propaganda. But I don't know that.
I would not be surprised at all if that were the case.
North Korea banknote is easy to find in other Asian nation I see them a lot and is cheap
I've heard that. Interesting how different markets have such different prices
Could the (NO) stand for north, as in North Korea?
You got it Clifford!
9:20 That Canadian BankNote was actually produced by the "American BankNote Company" The same Organization that printed All American BankNotes in the early and mid 1800s
Actually I believe the back agriculture allegory was created by the "American Banknote Company"but the bill itself was printed by the "Canadian Banknote Company" as can be seen along the bottom of the note on the front and back.
