The Walton - The Battle of Drucilla's Pond. Curt (Tom Bower) arrives with the army from Fort Lee to practice maneuvers. Olivia (Michael Learned) and Maude Gormley are both entering paintings in an art competition. Elizabeth (Kami Cotler) and Aimee (Rachel Longaker) prepare a patriotic tap dance with Corabeth (Ronnie Claire Edwards) for a show. Ike (Joe Conley) heads Civil Defense for a mock disaster exercise. As I share insights about this episode from Season 6.

There's nothing like it, ever. I was thinking earlier today that they should reboot the series with a new time period, but those never work. However, a different show with strong family values, that's not a sitcom would be great!

Hi Judy, There actually is a real Drucilla’s Pond in Schuyler, Virginia. It is located on the property where John & Olivia’s Bed & Breakfast is. I have never seen it because apparently there is a rugged hilly path to get to it, and I’m not getting any younger, but I know people who have walked down there and seen it. Also, there is a small family cemetery on the bed and breakfast property. I have seen it, and the name on one of the gravestones is “Drusilla Brown Hardwick” (spelled with an ‘s’ instead of a ‘c’). She was born in 1840 and died in 1908. Her memorial can be found on the Find a grave website. Thanks for another interesting and informative video.

Hello Judy. Me and my wife just watched this episode last week,,It made us rremember the first time that me and wife watched it for the very first time when we were both teenagers, remembering when Curt shows up and ends up spending the night after Mary Ellen was arrested. That was hilarious and so fun. I also loved how Grandpa " got even" with the Army Grandpa Walton, who was always a go-getter. Thank you again for sharing your perspective and memories of your time on The Waltons. As we always cherish. 😃 ❤️

You did an exceptionally excellent job diving into this multi leveled episode. Tbere was joy, sadness, and foreboading and fear. Next week is the 8th anniversary of D-Day and looking back in time World War II feels like a heroic time. I can imagine as the world heads toward war little by little, families experiences were like the Walton's - knowing their sons, brothers and husbands were likely going to war, wondering what changes the countrty would experience, and the inevitable that many would not return. Kudos to the writers, directors and actors for their work in this excellent episode.

Love the way they had Olivia and Maude in the art contest! I also love the ending with the sewing machine, Olivia and Grandpa. My mother always wondered if we were kin to Ed Graves because her maiden name was Graves. I think Ralph Waite was old enough to remember WWII just like Ellen and Will. Michael perhaps remembered the end of the war.

I believe the vehicle (ambulance) Curt is driving is the same one that he drove when he first joined the Waltons and the one Mary Ellen drove in later episodes but has been repainted for this episode because those 32 Ford panel trucks are very rare .

What I always liked about the Waltons was that they never sugar-coated anything. They made the series as real as possible. You celebrated the joys of John Boy, Jason, and Mary Ellen furthering their education. The struggles the family faced when they had the electricity shut off when they couldn't pay the bill. or when Grandma got sick or the death of characters like GW. I, for one, thought Mary Ellen could have been Mary Ellen Haines, but like in real life, it was not meant to be.

I have always liked how certain sets had a framed picture of the president on a wall. It was FDR for the longest and then Harry Truman. I've seen the president's picture in the Walton's living room and at Ike's store. In line with World War II and people supporting the nation.

Thanks, again, Judy! If a comment can be off topic, episode-wise… Today, “The Air Mail Man” was broadcast & I’m struck, again, by a frequent thought.
We all clearly love every actor, character, director, writer, cinematographer … every gift from The Waltons team! Yet, here, as John Boy interpreted the Gerard Manley Hopkins poem for his mom’s birthday, as always, Richard Thomas’ nuanced sensitivity was so richly expressed, so infused with fairly brave, independent-minded acting choices… He not only countered the cultural tide and teasing the series often experienced then, but he continually showed an adult male as deeply caring, gentle, vulnerable and perceptive - and at a time so many men, women and children were being hardened and torn down by conditions of war.
I’m repeating points others have made because they seem so poignant. I don’t think any art is a competition. Yet I wonder if The Waltons could have stayed afloat no less prevailed as it did if Richard Thomas’ portrayal had been even a little less extraordinary! He took the teasing ~ more targeted at his character’s name and nature than any others’ ~ and even at ages 20 & 21, plus, he consistently had the artistic character to respect the value of the stories and answer the jabs with such a sincere portrayal, the stories and the work of all of you took their proper place in people’s hearts. Thanks, always!!

You raise wonderful points. IMO - the casting made the show as much as the wonderful writing, direction etc. but the actors elevated it to a level of realism that seems to speak to the audience.

@@judynorton2598 Absolutely ly. You all were the sentries & the gatekeepers, so to speak. Even the best scriptwriting, directing, etc., falls like a kite without wind if the actors aren’t able to hold the stories aloft with the currents they supply. Your craft is animator, especially of what’s beyond words, and unifier ~ of all the other crafts involved and of your charcters’ lives with the lives of the audience. You know this well! I’m just celebrating & grateful for this!

I don't know about the location of a pond, but I do know that one of the roads in and out of Schuyler is bordered by the Rockfish River. This is normally a pleasant scenic trip, but not when there have been major storms. Then the river threatens to overrun the road which requires a 4WD truck and nerves of steel.

It was never revealed who bought the one painting that grandpa wasn't able to buy. Chance was cow #2 because the original died when John boy was graduating from high school. Bullet was Chance #1's baby and he just disappeared after that episode. The cradle that was used with Jennie was the one John boy made for Olivia and it and so many other things should have burned in the house fire.....but as we say..."that's the way it goes on tv."

I’m enjoying watching the episodes now where I follow up each episode with your summary. Another great summary and behind the scenes segment Judy. In fact I’d say it was “Dynamite!”😁

Loved the tap dancing! Really enjoyed Olivia and Maude's praintings, too! Loved the calf's name. I had forgotten that. Scared how this episode announced our country's entry into WW II.

There are a lot of suburbs that actually make up the westside of Auckland where I live & we all call ourselves 'westies'. So Auckland is made up of many suburbs all over Auckland. So it is made up of the west, the south of Auckland, North shore and over on the East & Auckland central & those that are in the CBD (city area). NZ now has a population of 5.3 million folks 🙂nz*

I always thought it was telling how Grandpa was so gung-ho for the soldiers practicing,etc.- until he saw the devastation of all those fish killed by the shock waves via that bomb- then was reminded that war can't be taken lightly and that innocents often pay the price via war!
Nice that Grandpa bought Olivia's paintings but where did he get the monies for it (and wasn't Grandma still recovering in the hospital from her stroke)?
Quite tragic for them to hear of Paris's fall to the NAZIs. Interesting that Olivia had a stronger reaction to it than John did- especially considering that he actually had BEEN there in the First World War and had gotten that scarf for her there. It would have been nice had there been some mention of John taking Olivia to Europe World War II and after their nest had emptied but there was no mention of any overseas travel by the Walton parents in any of the later movies.
    Thanks for this!

You raise good points. I think writers have to make those sorts of choices about what is most important to include in order to tell the best story and what gets left out for artistic reasons.

    2 things
I would love to know if there’s any blooper reels from any of your time on the Waltons
I’m sure we would all Love to see those
    Secondly
I’m curious as to why you haven’t started a patreon membership. I have no doubt you would have many of us joining
The funds could go to charities of your choice or for co workers going thru hard times if not to help finance all this wonderful work that you are doing for all our benefit. Something to think about

There are no blooper reels that I have or have access to. They were all originally on film. Not sure if they were ever converted. I’ve heard some people say they’ve seen a few on UA-cam. As for a Patreon membership, thank you for suggesting it. I haven’t done any research on it so far.

I appreciate your look back at The Battle of Drucilla's Pond! It never ceases to amaze me how the writers create substories that include all of the main characters and secondary characters and the stories interrelate as well! I loved that Grandpa was the "secret" Art Collector! What a lovely gesture! How adorable Elizabeth and Aimee tap dancing! Was this the last episode with Curt (Tom Bower/Curt). 😊 Oh dear! The poor actor of the now infamous "resurrected Curt!" 😄I hope he's a good sport! That was a very rough story line as just about everyone seems to good-naturedly agree! That explosion! Can John Dayton tell us how they managed that without harming anyone?? I remember our local Civil Defense Sirens being tested during the Cuban Missile Crisis! The teachers marched us students to the school basement, lined us up against the wall. We were told to kneel prone on the floor and cover our heads. We were too young to fully understand. Nevertheless, the sirens and cold basement floor left a lasting impression. All around town were signs for Shelters in the event of a crisis. Olivia's (the Art Director's) paintings look beautiful! Thanks for this lovely memory of a good Walton's story! ❤

Glad you enjoyed this episode. I’ll see if John has any recollection of shooting the explosion. Sounds like our “earthquake” drills growing up on Calif.

Judy. Were you ever in competition with your siblings for lines or scenes? I know you got along with Mary Beth, but did you ever have some friendly competition over scenes or dialogue. Thanks in advance.

    • @judynorton2598
      @judynorton2598  4 місяці тому +1

No, there was never a sense of competition as each of us had our storylines during each season.
