In 2,000 years, nobody will remember that television ever existed. "For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind" (Isaiah 65:17).
I will never forget this episode. I cried like a baby. I was just a kid but I LOVED Alice and the thought of it going off was very sad to me so I cried when they cried.
Back then, you formed a bond with the characters that you never realized was there until the very final episode and everyone walks off stage for the last time. I haven’t watched broadcast TV in nearly 10 years, so I don’t know if it’s still that way anymore.
R.I.P. Linda Lavin. Thank you for the laughs during my childhood years. I can remember watching this show at my grandparents' house during summer vacation from elementary school. Great memories.

Same here, I thought he was actually older, but only in his 40s and 50s when he made the show. Only 60 years old when he died. Mel Sharples was an ass, but he loved his crew and took care of them the best he could. And he didn’t live any better than they did, he lived in an efficiency apartment just paying his bills and had a comfortable place to sleep, nothing else.
Saying goodbye to these shows was actually an emotional experience back 40 years ago! We grew up with these unforgettable characters. TV was awesome back in those days!
RIP Linda Lavin !! Thanks for the memories !! I grew up watching this show in the 70's and it brings back good memories of watching this show as a kid.
Great show and cast from the golden era of sitcoms. Loved watching this show growing up with all the other great American and British classics. Too many comic legends gone, may they all rest in peace.
I'm so glad that Alice had the chance to end on a most heartfelt and special ending. This was a very uniquely enjoyable sitcom that even today is quite hard to match. R.I.P., Linda. 💓
I was 12 when their show ended but I vividly remember watching it on CBS. I grew up in the inner city of Birmingham, Alabama and I’m sure I was the only kid in my hood that watched this religiously. This was a great show and it’s one of the reasons why I was always intrigued by Phoenix.
These shows were such a part of my childhood growing up late 70's. Never thought these shows would end. But, then they all ended and us kids realized that we all had to grow up and move on!

For some reason I didn't remember watching this finall episode until they were exiting the diner. Loved this show watched every Sunday night. Linda Lavin is definately the best TV Mom. She helped me through tough times with my dysfunctional family.

This was a show that was so popular from 1977-1985, but as soon as it went off the air, it was soon forgotten. I loved it. It was based off an unpleasantly realistic 1974 movie beforehand set entirely in New Mexico and Arizona about an unhappy working-class housewife widowed from her husband that dies in an accident on the job and she’s broke and moves west. In the movie, Alice is an ordinary woman just trying to put her life back together as a singer, Tommy is a bored and obnoxious 12 year old, Mel is the owner of a highly successful greasy spoon diner who’s wife died from overwork years before, Flo is a brassy loudmouth, and Vera is an eccentric basket case with a dark sense of humor who’s motorcycle riding father drives her to work and from home.
That and M*A*S*H are the only ones I know that had sitcoms based on movies and were successful. Not an easy feat to turn a dramatic movie into a sitcom. Alice has been shown in reruns over the years on E!, TBS, TNN, IOn, and is currently on LOGO and Antenna TV. In the Alice series pilot, the kid who played Tommy in the movie version (Alfred Lutter) was cast, but after that was recast with Philip McKeon. And Belle was played by Diane Ladd, the original Flo in the movie. Vic Tayback (Mel) was the only one playing the same character in the movie and sitcom.
