  • This Sweet Potato Mochi Pancakes/ Hotteok (호떡) brings together some of our favorite Asian recipes. Japanese Mochi and Korean Street Food Hotteok (호떡). Although mochi is a Japanese term, pastries made of glutinous rice is popular and widespread throughout east Asian. But in general terms, mochi type pastries are stretchy and chewy (in a good way) in texture. Hotteok (호떡) is a Korean yeast leavened pancake, traditionally filled with a brown sugar cinnamon.     For the filling:
    ¼ cup roasted cashews, roughly chopped (or preferred nuts)
    2 Tablespoon brown sugar, packed (light or brown)
    1 Tablespoon creamy peanut butter (or other nut butter)
    ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
    Pinch of salt
    For the sweet potato rice cake:
    8 ounce sweet potato, peeled (about a medium size sweet potato)
    1 teaspoon brown sugar, packed (light or dark)
    Pinch of salt
    1 skimp cup glutinous rice flour

    I made it today! It was really easy to make and was simply delicious 👌🏼👨🏻‍🍳 the Mochi was chewy and I loved the nutty filling 🤍 thanks for the recipe. 10/10 would make again.

      Hello! We haven't tried it but it would have a different texture and the ratio would be different because regular potatoes have more starch than sweet potatoes. Thank you!

    i understand that this video was made quite some time ago but i was wondering if i could make it with regular flour? i do not have glutinous rice flower

      Hi! Unfortunately, to make these pancakes mochi, it requires glutinous rice flour, an essential ingredient to create that chewy mochi texture. If you want to use regular all-purpose flour, check out this recipe on our blog: twoplaidaprons.com/hotteok-korean-sweet-pancake/
      Just keep in mind that the texture will be different and also the method will be different than what's shown in this video.

    Is it possible to just boil the sweet potators or they must be steamed?

      You can boil it, you just might lose some sweet potato flavor thats all!

      I boiled mine with the skin on and peeled it afterwards. This way you won't lose the flavour. Hope it helps :)
